Every few months, I like to put together an all-covers edition of the show. As I’ve stated before, I have a folder all set up to toss in whatever tracks I want to later air. This edition came a little bit sooner than usual due to a couple of fabulous tribute records. The first release I wanted to highlight is the brand new An International Tribute To The Muffs, which features 26 fabulous covers of Kim Shattuck tunes. Proceeds from this release goes to the Team Shattuck Foundation of Kim´s Sister, Kristen Shattuck. The other great tribute record is Drunk Dial Fakes, Vol. 2. This ingenious set features “real” bands covering songs that were written for fictional TV and film bands. How can you not love covers from The Rutles, CHiPs, and That Thing You Do? As for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”, I’ve got a twofer for you this week. I recently discovered a couple of fabulous Undertones tribute records, and Teenage Hits – A Tribute To The Undertones features two wonderful remakes. And like always, I must again plead with y’all for more versions of “Teenage Kicks”. If you are a musician, or have any contact with artists that could record their own take […]

The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in 1986, in Boston, Massachusetts. Until 2013, the band consisted of Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriter), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, vocals) and David Lovering (drums). They disbanded acrimoniously in 1993 but reunited in 2004. After Deal left in 2013, the Pixies hired Kim Shattuck as a touring bassist; she was replaced that year by Paz Lenchantin, who became a permanent member in 2016. The Pixies are associated with the 1990s alternative rock boom, and draws on elements including punk rock and surf rock. Their music is known for dynamic 'loud-quiet-loud' shifts and song structures. Francis is the Pixies' primary songwriter; his often surreal lyrics cover offbeat subjects such as extraterrestrials, incest, and biblical violence. The band achieved modest popularity in the US but was more successful in Europe. Their jarring pop sound influenced acts such as Nirvana, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. In this episode a playlist of songs created by the Pixies and published in a popular music streaming platform (that shall remain unnamed) between December 2017 and July 2019. Lineup: Blue Öyster Cult, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dick Dale, Jimi Hendrix, T. Rex, Teenage Fanclub, ACDC, Baxter Dury, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Sugar, The Cure, Eels, The Clash, The Psychedelic Furs, Alabama Shakes, Andrew Norman, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Gil Rose, Ty Segall, Surf Friends, David Bowie, Mose Allison, Throwing Muses, Hüsker Dü, Peter, Paul and Mary, Thelonious Monk, Explosions In The Sky, The Beatles, Buzzcocks, The Fall, Weezer, Moondog, Suicide, Nico

After being friends for decades, former members of The Muffs, The Pandoras, and The Friggs, Kim Shattuck, Melanie Vammen, and Palmyra Delran, finally decided it was time to start their own band together. Kim and Melanie first played together in The Pandoras and went on to form The Muffs, meeting The Friggs' Palmyra on a Pandoras tour. The uber-talented trio is now known as The Coolies—a female-fronted super group backed by decades of rock stardom, who are using their platform to combat ALS.The Coolies dropped their self-titled debut EP in the summer on 2019 and have donated 100% of the proceeds from record sales to support research for the ALS Association. Living in different cities, the six-track EP was recorded at both West and East Coast studios and mixed by Grammy Award-winner Geoff Sanoff. From the very first track, “Uh Oh!,” bubbling down to “Yeah I Don't Know,” The Coolies dabbles in fizzy pop, punk, and pure rock, an essence that's perfectly captured by its psychedelic 3-D vinyl cover.Support the show

The legendary Muffs bass player, along with singer/guitarist Kim Shattuck and drummer Roy McDonald, blasted out their infectious, melodic brand of punk rock from 1990 until Kim’s passing in 2019. Cresting at the top of the Indie rock wave, they counted the Ramones, Elvis Costello, and Ronnie Spector among their fans and picked up a platinum record for their hit recording of “Kids In America.” With the reissue of 2004’s “Really Really Happy” along with Kim’s demos for that record soon to be released, Ronnie finds kindred spirits in the Troubled Men as they gather for a meeting of the minds. Topics include a camera ticket, the Iguanas/Kevin Gordon tour, a middle seat, RIP Kevin O’Day, 911 calls, dropping the masks, a record store, meeting Alex Chilton, the Pandoras in Houston, moving to L.A., starting a new band, the Coconut Teaser, a punk rock teacher, backup dancers, the ’90s sound, Green Day, Korla Pandit, the Plaster Casters, a new release, Kim’s legacy, Willie Aron, Susan Cowsill, rock’n’roll college, a New Orleans connection, “Pam and Tommy,” Tony Rugolo, guest relapses, and much more. The Muffs with Ronnie Barnett in conversation with David Eastaugh The band started as a collaboration between guitarists Kim Shattuck and Melanie Vammen, both former members of the 1980s all-female hard rock group, The Pandoras. The Muffs started performing and recording after the addition of bassist Ronnie Barnett and drummer Criss Crass. The Muffs released their initial 7" EPs and singles – "New Love" and "Guilty" (1991), and "I Need You" (1992) – on the West Coast independent labels Sub Pop and Sympathy for the Record Industry.[3] Based on the public and critical response to these early releases, the band was signed to Warner Bros. Records.[3] They established a reputation for "straightforward pop punk". In the words of musician and critic Scott Miller, the Muffs had "an uncommon flair for simple, catchy melodies" which, he noted approvingly, were always delivered in "Kim Shattuck's almost comically sneering adolescent rasp".
Flashback episode from the '00s (A Pop Diary), this is an interview with Kim Shattuck of The Muffs. Kim was one of the finest songwriters ever, and an incredible performer. Her albums with The Muffs, The Coolies, and The Beards will resonate forever. In this episode, we talk about her process and her creative beliefs. From Wikipedia: She was the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the American punk rock band the Muffs, which formed in 1991. From 1985 to 1990, Shattuck was a member of The Pandoras. In 2001, she was a singer, guitarist, and songwriter for The Beards, a side project composed of Shattuck, Lisa Marr, and Sherri Solinger. In 2013, she served briefly as the bass player for The Pixies.
This week is the anniversary of Kim Shattuck's death so Ronnie Barnett is back! New tunage from Kurt Baker as well. Check it out! So Cool!

Soraya & Jeff speak to The Muffs' Ronnie Barnett about the history of the band, their new album NO HOLIDAY, and how they recorded the album while Kim Shattuck was dealing with the symptoms of ALS.
It should be no surprise to anyone that the latest album by The Muffs, No Holiday, is the feature record of this month’s new release episode. Even without the tragic death of leader Kim Shattuck, this episode was bound to feature a handful of tracks from this release. But there was definitely no doubt after tearfully reading bandmate Roy McDonald’s story on Shattuck’s last months in the LA Times, and her desire to finish what is ultimately the band’s final record. It’s truly remarkable that this record even was finished, let alone as great as it is. This episode also features great new tracks by the likes of Jeffrey Lewis, Mikal Cronin, Guided By Voices, Mark Lanegan, and so many more. There’s also a plethora of email submissions by up and coming acts such as Uncle, Reverse, Taking On Water, Teenage Bubblegums, and Tio Rico. Of course, there’s brand new Rum Bar releases by The Dirty Trucker’s Tom Baker and The Speedways. After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy!

Tonight’s new release show is the broadcast that was planned for last week. In fact, it’s the exact set of songs that were put together before the shocking news about Kim Shattuck caused me to quickly put together a tribute to the fabulous Muffs leader. So this month’s new release show includes a lengthy set of Americana-ish veterans (Charlie Parr, Pernice Brothers, The Figgs, Wilco), Suicide-esque atmospheric punks (Atom, Rocket 808), female rockers (Baby Shakes, Paranoyds, Sweet Knives), covers (Dirty Nil, The Pretty Flowers, Das Clamps), and lots of good ol’ rock and roll from new and veteran artists. I also talk a little bit about the great show I saw earlier this week. The Cowboys made a stop at Total Drag Records, and as I’m known to do at these types of shows I purchased their entire discography. Or at least what they had with them. Great band and a fun show. After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy!

Kim Shattuck was special. Hands down one of the best there ever was. She will forever be missed, forever be thought of and of course forever be heard! That voice and that scream will never go away. Kim rules forever! Our hearts go out to Kim's husband, family, friends and bandmates.

When news came out this past Wednesday that Kim Shattuck had passed away after a two year battle with ALS it was immediately clear that the planned “new release” episode for this week needed to be postponed. Kim Shattuck has always been one of my favorites. She had the greatest scream in all of rock and roll, whether it was with The Pandoras, The Muffs, The Beards, or The Coolies. From all accounts she was also one of the good people in rock and roll. A badass for sure, but the nicest badass you could find. Tonight’s show celebrates her entire career, from early recordings as bassist in The Pandoras up to a track from a brand new Muffs album, No Holiday, that Omnivore is releasing in two weeks. There’s also segments dedicated to her work in The Beards and The Coolies, collaborations with other artists, covers of her favorites that she recorded, and a few Muffs songs covered by other artists. After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy!
