The Identity Trap: Why High-Performing Men Lose Themselves (And How to Find Your Way Back)

Most high-performing men have built their identity around their career. And without even realising it, that career has taken over their nervous system, their presence, and who they actually are. In this episode, I share one of the most powerful conversations I have had with a client — a two-year journey of rebuilding identity after years of high-pressure, high-stress survival mode. This one goes deep. Inside this episode: •How your career quietly takes over your identity and rewires your nervous system •Why being in survival mode 24/7 makes it impossible to be present at home •The moment I realised I was chasing a guarantee that life was never going to give me •The Jimmy Carr quote that reframes everything: it's not the pursuit of happiness — it's the happiness of the pursuit •Why most men do not actually know what happiness means for them •How to identify the keywords that genuinely make you feel fulfilled — not just successful •The identity shift that instantly removed my pressure: "I'm not a high-performing coach. I'm a full-time family man who runs a lifestyle business." •Why building your life around your career puts you in a well-paid rat trap •A simple morning challenge that trains your nervous system to switch off survival mode You are the guarantee. Not the business. Not the income. Not the next milestone. The work starts on the inside. If you are ready to reset your identity and start building a life that actually fits, join the 5 Day Mission Reset here:   https://consulting.boardmanjames.com/5daymissionresetdetails Let's get to work.

Heather Gates—strategist, facilitator, host of the Stand in the & podcast, and devoted lover of humans—joins me for a rich, imaginal conversation about alignment, paradox, and what it really looks like to live in service to human flourishing without burning yourself to the ground in the process. We explore how metaphor, somatics, and parts work can help us befriend the many versions of ourselves over a lifetime — what Heather beautifully calls "the kaleidoscope of butterflies" — and how to keep watering the orchid of our lives when we're deep in the not-yet. In this episode, we explore: Honoring sensitivity, big feelings, and "too muchness" through somatics and parts work (IFS) instead of shaming or suppressing them Why we often don't realize we're out of alignment until we finally say yes to what we've been longing to do and feel it "click." Actually flourishing vs. performing flourishing — building a life that feels alive in the body, not just impressive on paper Softening as a spiritual and somatic practice: moving from inner ass-kicking to self-regard, gentleness, and open-handedness Why we need at least one person who can meet us in the "I can't tell which end is up" moments — and what becomes possible when we find them This one is for anyone navigating transition, living between stories, or trying to honor their purpose without abandoning their body. Have you ever wondered why intimacy feels harder than it should? Why desire feels distant, or why being fully present in your body during sex feels just out of reach — even when everything else in your life seems fine? Most women in midlife assume it is hormones. And sometimes it is. But sometimes the story runs deeper, back through experiences the body absorbed and quietly held onto.In this episode of Pleasure in the Pause, Gabriella sits down with licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, and AASECT certified sex therapist Brooke Bralove for one of the most important conversations this show has ever had. They go deep into what trauma actually is, how it lives in the nervous system, and how it shapes desire, arousal, and the ability to feel safe in intimacy in ways most women never connect. They also explore a remarkable and fast-working therapy called Accelerated Resolution Therapy, or ART, and how it is helping women finally feel present and safe in their bodies again. This is a tender topic. If anything in this episode stirs something up for you, please give yourself permission to pause and take whatever space you need.Brooke Bralove is a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, and AASECT certified sex therapist with over 20 years in private practice. She specializes in trauma, sexual health, and emotional healing, helping individuals and couples move through anxiety, trauma, and relationship challenges so they can feel more connected, confident, and fully themselves. A trained Accelerated Resolution Therapy practitioner and sought after speaker, Brooke is known for her warmth, her insight, and her gift for making complex emotional and neurological processes feel accessible and real. She practices in Bethesda, Maryland just outside Washington DC. Key InsightsTrauma is broader than most women realize. The body holds onto experiences long after the mind has moved on.Low libido is not always hormonal. Accelerated Resolution Therapy works fast. You are more than your past sexual experiences. This conversation is for every woman who has ever wondered why pleasure feels so far away — and never thought to look at her history for the answer. The body is not broken. It is protecting itself the only way it knows how. And with the right support, it can learn that it is safe to open again. If you're seeking to reclaim your pleasure and vitality, join Gabriella at www.pleasureinthepause.com for this enlightening journey into the heart of female pleasure and empowerment.CONNECT WITH BROOKE BRALOVE:LinkedInInstagramWebsiteCONNECT WITH GABRIELLA ESPINOSA:InstagramLinkedInWork with Gabriella! Full episodes on YouTube. The information shared on Pleasure in the Pause is for educational and informational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice. In 1990, 55% of American adults reported having sex weekly. By 2024 that number had fallen to just 37%, and among adults aged 18–29, the share reporting no sex at all in the past year has doubled, from 12% to 24%. We are in the middle of a sex recession. And most of us have no idea why, or what to do about it. In this special episode of Good Is In The Details (recorded live at Podapalooza, a one-day podcast matching event) host Gwendolyn Dolske sits down with Xanet Pailet: nationally recognized sexuality educator and coach, somatic sexologist, and bestselling author of Living an Orgasmic Life: Heal Yourself and Awaken Your Pleasure, a former NYC healthcare lawyer who lived in a sexless marriage for over two decades before experiencing her own sexual healing and dedicating her career to helping others do the same. It's philosophy of intimacy, and genuinely useful psychology all in one conversation. What we explore in this episode: What's actually driving the sex recession, from smartphones and "bedtime procrastination" to the collapse of in-person socializing (young adults in 2024 spend less than half as much time with friends as they did in 2010) and what it means for our relationships. Why inadequate sex education and overexposure to pornography are creating unrealistic expectations and disconnecting people from genuine intimacy, and what healthy sexual education actually looks like. How bad early sexual experiences create lasting somatic patterns that shut people down, and what it takes to heal them. The common thread running through every healthy, intimate long-term relationship, and why most couples never talk about it. How to get unstuck in a long-term relationship that has lost its spark: practical, evidence-based, and compassionate strategies from a coach who has helped hundreds of couples. Why sexual expression is inseparable from emotional needs, and what happens to both partners when those needs go unaddressed for years. Whether you're in a long-term relationship that's lost its spark, navigating your own relationship with desire and intimacy, or simply trying to understand why an entire generation seems to be opting out of sex, this episode will give you a new framework for thinking about one of the most fundamental human experiences. About the format: This episode was recorded at Podapalooza — a live podcast matching event where hosts and guests connect in real time, no pre-research, no prepared talking points. What you hear is a genuinely spontaneous conversation. Sometimes the most honest episodes are the unplanned ones. Guest: Xanet Pailet: nationally recognized sexuality educator and coach, bestselling author of Living an Orgasmic Life, certified Somatica Sex and Intimacy Coach, Somatic Sexologist, Holistic Pelvic Care Practitioner, Tantra Educator, and Somatic Experiencing Trauma practitioner. Faculty at 1440 Multiversity, Ecstatic Living Institute, and the Somatica Institute. Based in Asheville, North Carolina. Are you trading your long-term peace and eternal future for a short-term pleasure? Discover how one small choice can lead to life's biggest regrets and how you can reclaim your spiritual inheritance today. Why Men Are Drifting... and How to Find Your Way Back - Episode 119

Grit Meets Growth

Today's conversation starts with a simple question: What are we talking about? And it turns into something bigger—something we've been seeing everywhere. Men who feel stuck. Men who feel adrift. Men running on autopilot and wondering, Now what? Guys who know deep down there's more in them, even if they don't know how to get to it. And here's the thing… the women in their lives see it too. In this episode, we dig into why so many men are wrestling with drift, discipline, identity, and disconnection—and why something like Built For More seems to hit a nerve every time it comes up. If you're a man who knows you were built for something deeper, or someone who loves a man who's fighting through this season, this conversation is going to land.5 Key TakeawaysMost men aren't broken… but they are disconnected. They're stuck, adrift, or running on autopilot—doing what's expected, not what's aligned. That disconnection shows up in relationships, work, fatherhood, discipline, and identity. Men carry silent burdens until they explode. Guys bury stress, shame, fear, and failure deep—until it erupts and wrecks their world. Having a place to speak the truth out loud, without judgment, changes everything. Brotherhood accelerates growth. When a man finally raises his hand and says, “That's me,” and another guy says, “Me too,” everything shifts. Accountability, encouragement, and honesty build strength faster than motivation ever will. Identity needs to be reclaimed—not outsourced. Men have spent generations defining themselves by their job, income, or output. Real identity is rooted in who you are, not what you produce. Until that truth lands, everything else feels unstable. You get one dash—write it with intention. Your life sits between two dates, and you decide what that middle line says. Clarity, confidence, peace, strength, purpose… those aren't accidents. They come from ownership, action, and refusing to drift another year. One truth: Most men know exactly where they're struggling… they're just waiting for permission to say it out loud.

Do you ever feel like your parenting is completely off track from where you want it to be? You promise yourself you won't yell, then find yourself yelling at your kids before breakfast. You intend to be patient and present, but end up getting distracted by your phone, or snapping at your child. This disconnect between your parenting intentions and reality can leave you feeling guilty, ashamed, and afraid that you're passing on intergenerational trauma despite your best efforts. In this episode, we reveal the origins of our harsh inner critic and how cultural expectations set parents up for struggle. You'll discover practical reparenting techniques, step-by-step self-compassion exercises, and how recognizing your emotional triggers can transform your parenting journey. This isn't about perfect parenting - it's about healing your own childhood wounds through a process called reparenting, so you can break intergenerational patterns and build the connection with your child you've always wanted. Questions This Episode Will AnswerHow can I identify and manage my emotional triggers in parenting?Emotional triggers often originate from unhealed childhood experiences. Notice when you have outsized reactions to your child's behavior—these point to areas needing healing. The episode offers a self-compassion exercise to help you treat yourself with the same kindness that you treat others. Creating space between trigger and reaction allows you to respond intentionally rather than reactively. How does my inner critic affect my ability to parent effectively?Your inner critic—which is often a voice of your parent/caregiver—triggers shame spirals that make it harder to parent effectively. It damages your relationship with yourself and teaches your children to develop their own harsh inner critics. Through reparenting, you can recognize this voice isn't truly yours, but one you absorbed from your environment. Learning to quiet this voice creates space for authentic connection with your child and breaks intergenerational trauma patterns. What is reparenting and how can it help my relationship with my child?Reparenting is giving yourself what your parents couldn't provide during your childhood. It involves a five-step process: becoming aware of your patterns, accepting them without judgment, validating your childhood experiences, reframing your beliefs, and taking action to reinforce new patterns. When you heal your own emotional wounds through reparenting, you become more capable of meeting your child's needs without being triggered. How do I break intergenerational trauma patterns in my parenting?Breaking intergenerational trauma starts with awareness of the patterns you inherited. Practice self-compassion exercises when triggered rather than self-criticism. Use the reparenting process to heal your own childhood wounds. Find supportive community to help you recognize when old patterns emerge. Each time you respond differently to your child than your parents did to you, you're disrupting the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Can self-compassion exercises really help when I'm triggered with my kids?Yes, self-compassion exercises are powerful tools for managing parenting triggers. Dr. Susan Pollak's three-step self-compassion exercise can create the mental space needed to respond differently: acknowledge the difficulty ("This is hard"), remember your common humanity ("Other parents struggle with this too"), and offer yourself...

We also discuss how meditation can be part of your day and not an addition to your day.  As always -this conversation with Jacqui is one of my favorites, she is always opening my eyes and heart to new teachings and I am forever grateful. Her words really are medicine. I hope you enjoy this. Here is my interview with Jacqui Deflorio.  Takeaways : Meditation is vital. Actually, it's a vital necessity. If you can breathe, you can meditate The meditative state is our intrinsic nature. If your relationship with yourself is not the priority then all other relationships will wane in comparison. By not knowing ourselves as intimately as we are meant to we never actually touch our essence and thereby we're only half living. Like Yoga, meditation is an inner size, not an exercise. A committed daily practice of 5- 10 min a day of meditation is going to hone the skill or build the muscle necessary for that presence of mind and that presence of being in order to know what our purpose is. Your breath is always with you, and your breath is a tool to drop into the self, slow down the moment. Know your passion. know your purpose. If you can see the path out in front of you, it's not your path. Your path is the one directly under your feet. You can't do it all: How to work inside your zone of genius and let go of everything else Do you feel like you're in a constant juggling act in your business? When you're an entrepreneur, things are bound to be busy – and sure, feeling overwhelmed at times is something to be expected.  But if you feel like you always have a million plates spinning in the air, then it's high time you start focusing on the things inside your zone of genius, and let go of all the other tasks that someone else can do for you. Passing the torch to an employee, a contractor or a VA can be really difficult, and I know this from personal experience. For ten full years, I insisted on editing my own videos. I thought that because I knew exactly what edits I wanted to make, I could do it quicker than anyone else could. Sure, I was ok at editing videos -- but it sure as heck was not the best use of my time.  And when I finally hired someone to do this for me, I found that with a little training and investment on the front end, they were able to do it much more efficiently than I could – leaving me time to work on the things in my business that not only turn the needle, but light me up. In this episode, I share what it means to work inside your zone of genius, why that's important, and how to get back to it if you get lost.  This is a great listen for any business owner who feels like they are literally doing it all -- so pop in your earpods and tune in. Here's a glance at this episode... [04:33] If you've ever felt overwhelmed in your business, I would suggest making a conscious effort to work more in your zone of genius. [05:11] Working in your zone of genius is doing the things that you are most proficient in. The work is fulfilling, because it makes you feel good. [06:02] An example of this for me is being on stage. I'm nervous at first, but at the end I feel energized and grounded.  [07:34] If there are things that make you feel low energy or have a really low vibe, these may be the things that you might need to find some help with. You should also hire someone if they can do the same thing in half the time. [08:29] An example of this is when I used to edit all of my own course videos. Editing videos isn't in my zone of genius. I was making excuses, because I was scared. [11:35] Prioritizing your zone of genius comes down to getting clear on what the important areas of your business are. For me, it's launching my digital courses, my membership, and my podcast. [13:50] When you plan for the next year, sit down and journal and really discover where your zone of genius is. Check in every season and ask where my zone of genius is now. [15:19] Superwoman syndrome is where you feel like you need to do everything and don't want to slow down and take the time to teach. [15:49] A good leader refuses to spend time on tasks that aren't in their zone of genius. They find the right people to support them and take the time to onboard and teach them. [16:23] Take out your journal and jot down some areas where you're operating in your zone of genius and where you're operating outside of your zone of genius. DM me @AmyPorterfield.
