A strange natural phenomenon sends Jase down a rabbit hole that leads him, Al, and Zach into a deep discussion about truth, love, obedience, and the meaning behind God's commands. Jase revisits an old Bible insight that reframes the Ten Commandments, and the guys connect the teachings of Jesus to creation, the golden calf, modern idols, and the struggle people have with uncomfortable truth, arguing that God's commands were never meant to be empty rules but a path to life. #909 Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/909 Sponsors: Grand Teton, AVC Rig, TroutRoutes There's a whole world of trout food drifting beneath the surface that most anglers never fully notice. Tiny insects, short-lived hatches, and subtle movements quietly control how trout feed and where they hold. In this episode, we dig into trout food — not just what they eat, but why it matters. Because once you start noticing bugs, the river starts making a whole lot more sense. Maggie Heumann from Trout Unlimited joins me to break down aquatic entomology in a way that actually connects to your time on the water.
Watch the full video: https://wetflyswing.com/salmonflyproject Take the Angler Survey: https://salmonflyproject.org/survey/ Support the Salmonfly Project: https://salmonflyproject.org/donate/ In this episode, we dig deep into one of the most important but often misunderstood parts of fly fishing: entomology, or the study of aquatic insects, and how it directly connects to success on the water. James Frakes and Jackson Birrell from the Salmonfly Project break this topic down in a way that makes it approachable, practical, and actually useful for anglers at any level. Instead of overwhelming you with scientific jargon or Latin names, they focus on what matters most: understanding bugs well enough to make better decisions when fish are feeding. Right from the start, the conversation shifts the way you think about "matching the hatch." It's not just about picking the right fly—it's about understanding timing, behavior, and movement. When you start thinking not only like a fish, but also like the bug, everything begins to click. Why Bugs Matter More Than You Think One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that bugs are not just "fish food" they are the foundation of the entire river ecosystem. Aquatic insects: Feed trout and drive feeding behavior Support birds and other wildlife Help clean and maintain healthy rivers Act as early warning signs for water quality In fact, over 70% of freshwater species are insects, which puts into perspective just how important they are. The guys emphasize that it's not just about having a lot of bugs it's about diversity. Different species hatch at different times, creating consistent feeding opportunities for trout throughout the year. Without that diversity, fishing becomes less predictable and often less productive. The Big 3: Mayflies, Stoneflies, and Caddisflies To simplify things, they focus on the three major insect groups every angler should understand: 1. Mayflies These are the classic "dry fly" bugs most anglers think of. They have a unique lifecycle that includes multiple fishable stages: Nymph Emerger Dun (adult) Spinner (final stage) Because mayflies take a long time to emerge and sit in the surface film, trout feed on them gently those classic sipping rises. A key insight: Mayflies are often most vulnerable during emergence, making emerger and cripple patterns incredibly effective. 2. Stoneflies Stoneflies behave very differently. Instead of emerging mid-river, they: Crawl to the banks Hatch out of the water Return to lay eggs by skittering or "splatting" on the surface This creates a completely different feeding response from trout: More aggressive, splashy eats One of the most surprising takeaways: During big hatches like salmonflies, fish may already be completely full from eating nymphs That's why sometimes fish ignore giant dry flies even when bugs are everywhere 3. Caddisflies Caddis are fast, active, and incredibly abundant. Their lifecycle includes: Larva Pupa (fast-rising stage) Adult (moth-like) Unlike mayflies, caddis emerge quickly and don't sit long on the surface. This leads to: Faster, more aggressive trout feeding (the classic "caddis rise") A big takeaway here: Fishing wet flies or pupae is often more effective than dry flies during caddis activity Understanding Behavior Over Identification One of the most important themes in this episode is that you don't need to memorize every bug species. Instead, focus on: What type of bug it is (mayfly, stonefly, caddis) Where it lives (bottom, rocks, banks) How it moves (slow drift vs fast swim vs skitter) When it emerges If you understand those basics, you can: Anticipate feeding behavior instead of reacting to it Hatch Timing and Strategy The episode also dives into how hatches actually happen and how to fish them. Key concepts: Hatches are driven by water temperature and seasonal timing Spinner falls are driven by air temperature Bugs emerge in predictable windows (morning, midday, evening) Some practical strategies: Fish nymphs before the hatch begins Switch to emergers right before activity Match surface patterns only when fish are clearly feeding up top They also highlight how: Cloudy, humid weather often improves mayfly fishing Sunny afternoons can be better for stoneflies Evening and even nighttime can be prime for caddis Real Science Meets Real Fishing What makes this episode stand out is how the Salmonfly Project connects science directly to angling. Their work includes: Studying insect populations Tracking environmental changes Running angler-driven data collection They explain how insects act as "canaries in the coal mine"s howing early signs of river health changes before fish populations decline. This ties into a bigger message: Understanding bugs makes you not just a better angler—but a better steward of the river The Wild Side of Bugs This episode also mixes in some unforgettable (and slightly crazy) insights: Caddis larvae build underwater nets and fight over territory Some stoneflies live underground and show up in people's wells Mayflies have been around longer than dinosaurs Certain bugs can literally "chirp" underwater to compete These moments highlight something important: There's an entire world happening beneath your feet that most anglers never see The Big Takeaway If there's one idea to walk away with, it's this: You don't need to know everything about bugs— you just need to understand enough to predict what's happening. When you: Recognize the type of insect Understand its behavior Match your presentation accordingly You move from guessing… to fishing with purpose. Final Thoughts This conversation is a reminder that fly fishing isn't just about casting or gear it's about awareness. The anglers who consistently find success aren't always using the fanciest flies—they're the ones paying attention to: What's happening in the water What stage the bugs are in How trout are responding And once you start seeing the river through that lens, everything changes.
Insects play a critical role in rivers, lakes, and streams, acting as a vital food source for many animals and maintaining the health of these freshwater ecosystems. A few of these insects include: mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies. The bad news? They are in decline. The good news? There is something we can do about it. This is a new topic for us and one that we are excited to explore.Joining us to dive into the aquatic world are Jackson Birrell and James Frakes, co-founders of the Salmonfly Project, which is based here in Missoula, Montana and aims to conserve stream insects. Jackson is Executive Director of the Salmonfly Project and is a PhD graduate from the University of Montana, where he studied the factors that shape aquatic insect distributions and the causes of salmonfly declines across the Rockies. James is the Salmonfly Project's Chief Operations Officer and also a graduate from the University of Montana where he received his Master's degree in Aquatic Ecology. As an avid fly fisher, he is passionate about continuing his research on insect decline and developing projects to save the hatches he knows and loves.---Photo Credit: Jenny WalkerThank you for listening! Anyone remember the Mayflies USA? I got a promo copy of "Summertown" in 1998 and I fell in love with the album. They went on a massive hiatus but got together to record their latest album "Kickless Kids" set for release in May 2025. When I got a press release about this, I immediately asked if they could come on the show to talk about their career, the new album, and albums (and some songs) important to them.We talk with Matt McMichaels and Adam Price about the new album but also talk about Bob Mould, power pop (and finally embracing that genre tag), Jackson Mississippi, trying to emulate the Replacements (the self sabotage aspect), getting produced by Mitch Easter and Chris Stamey, Keith Richard, Steely Dan, and more.If you're not a fan yet, I think you will be after this.Check out The Mayflies USA at: https://www.facebook.com/themayfliesusaCheck out other episodes at RecordsRevisitedPodcast.com or one all your favorite podcast providers like Apple Podcasts, Castbox, iHeartMedia, and Spotify. A new series begins at the Edinburgh International Book Festival with guests Irvine Welsh and Andrew O'Hagan. Irvine Welsh is best known as the author of Trainspotting. Andrew O'Hagan's Mayflies was recently made into a BBC TV series. The programme was recorded in front of an audience at the Dynamic Earth Centre. Irvine Welsh chooses a lesser known book - Brian by Jeremy Cooper. It's the story of a lonely man's redemption through his love of film. A membership of the BFI (British Film Institute) opens up his world and offers an escape from his humdrum existence working for the housing department of a North London council. By contrast Andrew chooses Robert Louis Stevenson's masterpiece of dual identity - The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Again although it's set in London Andrew recognises the streets of Edinburgh's New Town in the book. Harriett brings the Australian writer Helen Garner's novel The Children's Bach for discussion. It's the story of family breakdown and the ensuing emotional fallout.Produced by Maggie Ayre for BBC Audio BristolPhoto credit: Desiree Adams / Penguin Random House

He is unusual in being a musical theatre writer from a working class background who writes shows and is passionate about helping others understand the genre. He is also fascinating to speak with as I discovered during our recent interview when we talked about his own work, the challenges those without money face trying to make a career in theatre and Gus' views on how long shows should run.Gus Gowland's three produced shows all look at very different situations but they share a common humanity.Pieces of String is about same sex relationships during World War 2 seen through the lens of a family discovering that their father/grandfather/husband had been in love with another man. The music in the show is beautifully layered and melodic which helps the show look at a grand theme from a very human perspective.Check out the wonderful Standing in the Shadows from the show's run at the Colchester Mercury Theatre.Mayflies which was produced at York Theatre Royal looks at what would happen if we slowed down our online dating. Using the life of a mayfly as a metaphor the show explores a couple who only communicate online for two years before meeting. It is also constructed to have a rotating cast so that the audience sees diverse dynamics depending on the age, gender or sexuality of each character. It is a very clever piece that got some great reviews - but also a couple of puzzling critiques which Gus addresses in our interview.Gowland's latest show is Candidates which is being produced by the GSA Conservatoire directed by Julian Woolford. It is based on Much Ado About Nothing but transported to a modern day US High School. The writer describes it as a bit of an homage to High School Musical and Mean Girls and talks about how exciting it is to work with the young talent at GSA.In our interview Gus talks about what he has learnt and how he deals with the frustrations of working in theatre. By sharing his experiences (good and bad) and offering well thought through and eloquent conclusions, Gus Gowland offers an insight into what it takes to be successful in musical theatre and inspires all who want to make it their life. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/503 Presented By: Yellowstone Teton Territory, Jackson Hole Fly Company, Bearvault, Chota Outdoor Gear Phil Rowley joins us today to share his wealth of knowledge on Stillwater, this time zeroing in on the art of fly fishing Henry's Lake. We're gearing up for an exciting event where a lucky winner will snag a trip to this area, along with a handpicked selection of top-tier gear. Our stillwater guru also provides updates on his upcoming adventures, including trips to Argentina in pursuit of giant rainbows and Golden Dorado. Plus, find out the three key factors Phil considers when fishing a new lake. Fly Fishing Henry's Lake with Phil Rowley. 02:50 - Phil Rowley provides an update on his busy schedule, which includes early-year commitments to fly fishing and outdoor shows. He also mentions an upcoming trip to fish giant rainbows in Argentina's Jurassic Lake and a unique opportunity to chase Golden Dorado. 03:37 - Phil hosts trips to Argentina in partnership with Estancia Laguna Verde. The lodge owner also owns Golden Dorado River Cruisers, which operates a luxurious refurbished houseboat for cruising along the Parana River. 11:25 - Phil's initial visit to the Island Park area was for an episode he filmed alongside Bob Jacklin for the New Fly Fisher. They primarily focused on river fishing. However, he did spend one day on Hebgen Lake. 14:00 - Hebgen Lake is known for its abundance of Callibaetis hatches, particularly in August. Unlike many lakes that experience a summer slowdown with trout going deep due to reduced oxygen content, Hebgen Lake, situated at a higher elevation in the West Yellowstone area, offers excellent dry fly fishing opportunities during this month. 17:00 - Callibaetis is one of the few Stillwater-based mayflies out there. It's from the swimming nymph family. Unlike many mayflies, which are not commonly found in lake environments due to the lower oxygen levels, Callibaetis have external gills. 18:15 - Another mayfly you might run into in lakes is the Hexagenia limbata. 22:00 - Phil Rowley provides insights into the contents of his fly box when fishing in the Henry's Lake area. 28:00 - The washing line setup is a multi-fly arrangement where you position the buoyant fly on the point, farthest from the fly line, and then hang one or two flies off independent droppers. Stillwater Giveaway 32:49 - Just a quick shout-out to the giveaway we have going on right now. You can visit wetflyswing.com/giveaway where we're offering a trip and a bunch of gear related to this area. Additionally, we're working on organizing a live event where you can get more information on the topics we're discussing today, and we'll have Phil there to answer questions. Keep an eye on wetflyswing.com/live for more information. Phil Rowley's Fly Patterns 33:00 - Phil highlights a couple of fly patterns for each category. Phil has a pattern called the Holo worm. It is a curved scud hook, and a little red Marabou tail to suggest a wiggling larvae. Another great option is Jerry McBride's "Bionic Worm." This pattern features a fluorescent pink tail, a red body, and a hot orange bead for added visibility. 35:00 - Other flies in the pupal stages are your basic black and red chironomid. 36:00 - Phil's Collaborator pattern's burnt orange coloration with a red butt is designed to mimic the presence of residual hemoglobin in the pupa. Tips When Fishing a New Lake 41:00 - Phil emphasizes the importance of prior research when fishing a new lake. He suggests checking online resources, including Facebook groups, forums, and fishing reports from local fly shops. 3 Things to Look for in a Lake Comfort - Comfort for trout is primarily determined by water temperature and its relation to oxygen content. Phil looks for temperatures between 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Protection - Protection factors give trout confidence to feed. This includes rippled surfaces, algal blooms, and underwater structures like drop-offs, weed beds, points, rocky outcroppings, and sunken islands. Food - Food sources are crucial, and Phil focuses on identifying hatches and where the bugs are most likely to be found. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/503

It's been over 5 years since Dr. Kyba was on the Get A Grip On Lighting podcast. Between then and now, we created Restoring Darkness which is a much more appropriate place for Dr. Kyba to be as his research is on skyglow and artificial light at night. He points out that when lighting up a building to make it an experience, it is no longer an experience when you do it EVERY NIGHT! We bet you've never thought of the dangers of attracting Mayflies to an illuminated bridge. You can take part in his research by joining the Nachtlicht-BüHNE project, or submitting measurements with the Loss of the Night app on an Android or iOS device. Christopher Kyba is a physicist at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and Ruhr University Bochum. He has worked on quantification of artificial light in the outdoor environment for over a decade, using ground, air, and space-based techniques, as well as citizen science. He obtained his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006, and his BSc from the University of Alberta in 2000.

Hey all, We went on an unexpected hiatus last month into this one ( sometimes long Covid forces you to rest ). On a partial schedule at the moment but things should hopefully settle down by Feb. As for today's episode: sometimes Dave and I like to start with the simple to find the ‘complex'—what will give life to your world, story and characters once they're outside of your head. Just a quick note—this conversation was originally featured on Odder Worlds some years ago on older equipment, so the audio quality is a little rough. -J --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/herebetygers/message
This week my guest is award-winning investigative journalist Robert O'Harrow [44:45], who has been with the Washington Post for over 30 years. Last fall he wrote an extensive article on the threats to mayfly populations worldwide and is continuing to research this issue, so I thought it would be interesting to share his findings. Bob is also a lifelong fly fisher who admits he didn't know a lot about the plight of mayflies in the past, so he gives us a great perspective. In the Fly Box this week, we have some great questions and phone calls, including: What is a good net for wade fishing when pursuing multiple species? I recently caught a bunch of large trout in a river but no small ones. Where do the small ones go? Can a "working fly box" apply to non-competition anglers as well? What does Tim Flagler use to cut his thread on his videos? I am a beginning fly fisher and the trout in the larger rivers in my area are difficult to catch. Should I first concentrate on small streams, ponds, or reservoirs? What is the best way to give a fish line when it's running without giving it too much slack? Is it a good idea to put UV resin over my nail knots? How do you determine how deep the water is so you can set the indicator at 1 ½ times the water depth? I keep getting crowded by other anglers on Colorado rivers. Should I try to educate them? I lost a big fish by following it downstream. My buddy says I should have stood my ground and not followed the fish. What do you think? Do you think it's a bad idea to use beard trimmings in my dubbing to imitate hare's ear?
I catch up with Sandy Nelson and talk with him about the fantastic guide he has put together for the hatches on his local river, The Don. I have always felt we owe the fish to try and learn a little more about what they are eating and Sandy's guide is the perfect way to do so without getting overly technical. We talk about what went into it, get some tips along with fly patterns you might find useful.Although the guide is specific to The Don, the hatches are just the same as you'll encounter on your home water. We also talk about rods too. This is a slightly longer version of the podcast as we cover so much ground but I feel sure you will get plenty from it.Click here to see Sandy's fly guideClick here to see Sandy's fly box
This Bonus Episode is a little bit different to the usual. This week, instead of ripping each other to shreds Martin and Gordon share a bit of love reflecting on the proud work that has been received over the festive period with Martin's 'Mayflies' and Gordon's 'Good Morning Britain'. But don't worry, the usual carry on is still in there, including chat around that tie decision by Gordon. Take a listen and listen out for a cheeky guest who may well be appearing in next week's episodes. Make sure you subscribe and leave a 5 star review! The actors talk about their roles in the BBC adaptation of Andrew O'Hagan's novel.
The diversity and complexity of the life in a stream is mind-boggling. But it's also something all of us can see and learn about, kids or adults, whatever our level of knowledge. This story is all about the little creatures of Missoula's Rattlesnake Creek - from stoneflies and mayflies to riffle beetles and midges. This was all from just one wintry day in the field with the Watershed Education Network. What did we find? Listen to this story and find out - and then go outside and start getting to know a stream near you! Let me know what you learn.
Mayflies emerging at the same time and mule deer fawns dropping at the same time are evolutionary strategies that groups have developed to dilute the possibility of being targeted by predators.
Mayflies are the world's oldest winged insect and may have lots to tell scientists about the environment. We talk about mayflies plus cover insect activity in the fall.
