Let's face it. Most rock documentaries suck. But not BORN INNOCENT: THE REDD KROSS STORY. Why? Lots of reasons. There's the great music, of course. And the way it's sweet instead of cloying and self-effacing where it could be self-serving. But mostly? It's the joy of listening to two funny guys telling a good story that's worth hearing. Well, this week we have one of them on the show: Steven McDonald. A true lifer who's been doing it since he was eleven (ELEVEN?!?) — he also happens to be one of the best rock bassists out there (AND an all around swell guy). On this episode we talk to Steven about “Crazy Horses”, Moose lodges, his brother Jeff, misbegotten childhoods, runaways, THE Runaways, Black Flag, Rodney Bingenheimer, taking a beer can in the face for the Melvins, comparing notes with Tommy Stinson, Air Supply's gangster manager, and the I-told-you-so's of life.

Redd Kross, a band overdue for massive appreciation, is having a moment. There's a new page-turner of a memoir, Now You're One of Us, co-written by brother bandmates Jeff and Steven McDonald with Dan Epstein. Their narrative rocks to life in Andrew Reich's new documentary, Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story. The movie, in turn, inspired the 2024 double album Redd Kross, a candy-colored collection of irresistible hooks, massive riffs and sharp reflections, all wrapped in a cover that one brother thought shouldn't be red. Steven McDonald, the younger bass-playing brother, opens up here about what it's been like to work with Jeff (a previous Caropop guest) since the age of 11, his abduction at age 13, his increased songwriting role in Redd Kross, how he juggles his many Redd Kross duties with playing in the Melvins and other bands, what Kurt Cobain said to tick him off and why he takes Redd Kross's commercial struggles personally.

Like it or not, this is the year of Redd Kross! This underappreciated power pop band is coming at you with an assault of good stuff in 2024. They have an incredible new self-titled album, a memoir called Now You're One of Us, and a fantastic new documentary called Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story. Jeff and Steven McDonald started out as pre-teens in the hardcore scene in Southern California, but matured into one of the great, if unsung, bands of the 80s and 90s with albums like 1990's Third Eye and 1993's epic Phaseshifter. As is so often the case, mainstream success never came knocking, but the band has carried on for decades consistently releasing great music. Steven joins us this week with the film's director Andrew Reich to discuss the whole career, being kidnapped at 12 (crazy story), how to deal with success not happening, and tons more. We're beyond excited to screen the first Phoenix showing of Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story. Directed by Andrew Reich, the film tells the story of brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald, who founded Redd Kross as teenagers in the Southern California of the 1970s. Directed by Andrew Reich, this documentary makes the case that RK is the seminal West Coast band of the last half century, a “secret handshake” exchanged between punk, college rock, grunge, glam, power pop, metal, and indie rock fans.Packed with archival footage, interviews with the McDonalds, and thoughts and stories from members of Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, The Bangles, Dinosaur Jr, The Go-Go's, Soundgarden, Black Flag, and many more, the movie shows why people like Thurston Moore called Redd Kross "one of the most important bands in America." Come hang out with us to close out the year of Redd Kross, 2024, which has also seen a brand new self-titled Redd Kross album—you can get your copy from In the Red Records—and Now You're One of Us: The Incredible Story of Redd Kross, a book written with Dan Epstein. Come hang out and eat popcorn with us. GET YOUR TICKETS HERE To get your ready for the show, you're about to hear a talk we taped August 11th at the Valley Bar. It's WASTOIDS chief Sam Means in conversation with both Jeff and Steve—covering not only the band's history, takes on the hardcore scene, and Steve's work with Sam's band, The Format—but also, the saga of Tater Totz, the McDonalds' strange Beatles tribute. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. Redd Kross and Current Melvins' Steven McDonald is a foundational part of LA's punk scene, and a brilliant songwriter and guitar player. Redd Cross's new Double Album, “Self-Titled Album” kicks ass, and Steven was generous enough to give The Jons an early listen. The album soars to heights untold. Held together with harmonies Steven and his brother Jeff McDonald blend together so solidly it allows the band to explore the entire matrix of rock music and yet, remain Redd Cross. The album has many twists and turns, not unlike the twists and literal turns this episode of Two Jons Takes. Like no other episode before it: it contains driver-swaps, spontaneous hitchhiker pickups, and Steven eventually taking the wheel of the FARTVAN(!) and yet it is all held together with a beautiful tapestry of lefts, and no rights. This book is broken up into just three parts: Getting Here, Staying Here, and Higher Power. Some of us came in, came to believe, and stayed. Some of us came in and left. At just 11 years old, Steven and his older brother Jeff began their journey into the Los Angeles music scene, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Black Flag and the whole LA Hardcore fraternity seeing and experiencing things as teenager that most of us would never get the chance to witness. It was their love of all styles of music and rock and roll history which would create the Redd Kross sound and look, that to this day commands much respect amongst both fans and bands alike. And some healthcare workers are using what little emotional labor they have left to advocate in the streets and online for racial justice.  Joining Ira to talk about burnout in the healthcare industry are Steven McDonald, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York, and Kali Cyrus, a psychiatrist and assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Insights From International Doctors On The Frontlines Of The Pandemic   In March, governors Andrew Cuomo in New York and Gavin Newsome in California put out a call for medical professionals to come to their states to help with the COVID-19 crisis. Many of those on the frontlines aren’t just from out of the state, but from out of the country. International medical professionals are estimated to make up a quarter of working doctors in the U.S.   Journalist Max Blau talks about the role of international doctors in the U.S. medical system and how they have been affected during the pandemic. Then international resident physicians Quinn Lougheide and Muhammad Jahanzaib Anwar share stories from aiding COVID-19 patients in Bronx, New York. PG&E Guilty Plea Sets A Precedent For Climate Change Culpability   In 2018, the devastating Camp Fire wildfire swept through northern California, killing 84 people. Utility giant Pacific Gas & Electric, or PG&E, was deemed to be responsible for the spark that caused the fire. This week, the company pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter for the deaths, marking the first case of its kind. The decision sets a precedent for future legal battles over holding companies accountable for climate change, and how that burden should be split.  Vox staff writer Umair Irfan joins Ira to talk about the PG&E case, plus more on why a second round of COVID-19 lockdowns might not work as well as the first shelter in place orders.

Special guests include bond market expert Steven McDonald and dividend investing guru and author Mark Lichtenfield from The Oxford Club; and David Conover, President of Wealth Management at Everbank.  Yes, bonds. stocks and banking on a real estate show.  But for good reason!  We’ve been talking forever about the connection between the bond market and the mortgage market - and the powerful influence the bond market has on interest rates and overall availability of capital.  And not just for real estate investors, but job creators (it's better when tenants have jobs) and consumers (businesses do better when people buy stuff).  So even though he’s not a real estate guy, we really bonded with Steve (sorry, we couldn't help ourselves). Mark talks about the important of investing for income.  Of course, he means stocks that pay dividends, but we like the idea.  Buy an equity that cash flows.  Great concept!  That way if inflation goes up, so does your asset value, and if not, well then you just cash flow, flow, flow your boat merrily down the stream. What about David?  Well, banks are basically warehouses where real estate investors store their extra dollars, including the float on their cash flow.  And it’s a big concern when the Fed is diluting the value of those dollars, so what’s an investor to do?  After all, you can’t deploy all your cash all the time, or you might wake up one day with a major liquidity problem.  David tells us how you can dump dollars, still be liquid and have FDIC insurance. More, we learn how a banking executive looks at the current market and what he thinks the future holds. So listen in on the conversation as we talk bonds, dividends and wealth management with Steve McDonald and David Conover.
