Nikita Gale speaks with Alexander Provan about Tina Turner, Phil Spector, and the prospect of being heard without being controlled. Gale tells the story of the genre-busting song that Turner and Spector, the infamous producer, recorded in 1966, “River Deep—Mountain High”: a commercial failure but a creative breakthrough for Turner, who had previously been defined as an R&B singer and dominated by her abusive husband and bandmate, Ike Turner. Gale, an artist who has often engaged with Turner's music and biography, talks about the song as a symbol for how the music industry determines whose voices are amplified and whose are silenced. She observes that the segregation of cities in midcentury America was echoed on the airwaves, and the definition of audiences via racial and demographic categories has been upheld by record labels, Spotify, and the Grammys.Nikita Gale is an artist who lives in Los Angeles. In addition to co-hosting Medium Rotation, Gale has worked with Triple Canopy on a residency at the Hammer Museum and a related series of performances and publications. Gale's recent and upcoming projects include exhibitions at the California African American Museum (Los Angeles) and LAX Art (Los Angeles), a commissioned performance at MoMA PS1 (New York City), and the record and book INFINITE RESOURCES (Aventures, 2021).In this episode, Gale draws on her essay “Little Girls,” published by Triple Canopy last year, which describes “River Deep—Mountain High” as the zenith of Spector's “wall of sound” technique—and as “the sound of being together—or of being packed together, forced together.” (A reading of Gale's essay by Kaneza Schaal is available as a bonus episode.) Gale connects Turner's effort to transcend the role of R&B singer, Spector's desire to defy genre, and her own frustration as a teenager in Atlanta with radio stations that played rap for Black listeners and alt-rock for white ones. With Provan, she speaks about the production and reception of “River Deep—Mountain High” as part of the trajectory from “race records” in the 1920s to “urban contemporary” in the 1970s to the ongoing subsumption of most genres by pop music. In order of appearance, the music and other recordings played on this episode are: Tina Turner performing in Gimme Shelter (Maysles Films, 1970), directed by David Maysles, Albert Maysles, and Charlotte Zwerin; Tracy Chapman, “Fast Car,” Tracy Chapman (Elektra, 1988); Tyler, the Creator speaking to the press after winning Best Rap Album at the Grammy Awards, 2020; outtakes from the recording of “River Deep—Mountain High,” from Ike & Tina Turner, What You See Is What You Get (Big Fro, 2018); the Ronettes, “Walking in the Rain” (Philles, 1964); Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats (a.k.a. Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm), “Rocket 88” (Chess, 1951); Tina Turner interviewed on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” May 31, 1984; Phil Spector inducting Ike & Tina Turner into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, 1991; interview with Phil Spector from All You Need Is Love: The Story of Popular Music (London Weekend Television, 1977), directed by Tony Palmer; Brian Gibson, dir., What's Love Got to Do with It (Touchstone Pictures, 1993).Medium Rotation is produced by Alexander Provan with Andrew Leland, and edited by Provan with Matt Frassica. Tashi Wada composed the theme music. Matt Mehlan acted as audio engineer and contributed additional music.Medium Rotation is made possible through generous contributions from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Nicholas Harteau. It's obviously not just the film industry that's having trouble during the pandemic; the music industry's working bands have found their main revenue stream of touring currently not an option for this last year. On this episode is Laura Colwell and Stephen Salisbury of the Austin, TX band Sun June, who, between their dreamy “regret pop” and self-directed videos, have a foot in both industries. Here we discuss:- these two Bay Area concert docs of the late '60s;- Janis Joplin and Otis Redding's iconic performances in the former;- the snuff film aspects of the latter;- the forced-mythologized bookending of both;- their cameramen directors D.A. Pennebaker and the Maysles Bros;- and other contributors such as Shelter's co-director and -editor Charlotte Zwerin.Also:- How Sun June literally started out in an editing room;- what their working band entails now with members across multiple cities;- rock critic Robert Christgau's clear-eyed essay “Anatomy of a Love Festival”;- what Albert Maysles told me when I interviewed him in 2000;- how wildly different the industry was financially between now and 1967;- and what techniques these docs can have for a modern band making their own videos and controlling their own image.Colwell, along with being lead singer and keyboard player for Sun June, works in the film industry and has edited features and docs, including Also Starring Austin, about the city's history on film. Salisbury, Sun June's guitarist, also worked in the film industry on films such as Knight of Cups, Song to Song, and the doc Becoming Leslie. He is currently in the graduate program studying microbiology at the University of North Carolina. They both also write songs for the band.Sun June's sophomore album, Somewhere, was just released via Run For Cover and Keeled Scales. You can find out more at the band's website, such as where to stream live performances and, when bands can do so again, tour dates. Checking out their videos page is also highly recommended, too.Monterey Pop and Gimme Shelter are both, respectively, streaming on HBO Max and both, respectively, physically on the Criterion Collection.

After that, we jump forward to Michael Mann's Heat, a stylish and captivating crime drama featuring the first onscreen collaboration between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, and which has maintained its legacy as one of the best films of its kind.  Please allow us to introduce ourselves....we're a podcast...of wealth (of information and opinions) and taste....maybe.   Episode 62 of See Hear Podcast is ready for your earholes. Tim, Sticky (Fingers) and Maurice delve into the documentary about disaster that was The Rolling Stones' free concert at Altamont Speedway on December 6, 1969. The Stones were finishing up their first American tour in 3 years....hugely successful artistically coming after two of the greatest albums in their back catalogue, Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed.   The tour infamously ended in tragedy when a San Franciscan chapter of the Hells Angels were hired by the Stones to provide security for the payment of $500 worth of beer. From 2019, this does not look to be world's best business practice....needless to say, things didn't go well. Members of the audience (and Marty Ballin of Jefferson Airplane) were beaten by the Angels, they had contempt for the band they were supposedly guarding, and by day's end, Meredith Hunter, a concert goer was pronounced dead after being stabbed by a member of the Angels.   David and Albert Mayles and Charlotte Zwerin were looking to make a bog standard documentary about the Stones' US tour of 1969....instead, their cameras captured events that many have said kicked the idealism of the 1960s to the curb.   We discuss the way the drama of the film is presented, other films featuring the Rolling Stones as subject matter, the image of the band as opposed to the reality, and whether they learned anything as a result. Who was complicit in Meredith's murder? Be aware some of the subject matter may be a little distressing.   You can download the show by searching for See Hear podcast on iTunes, Spotify or Stitcher or you can download from http://seehear.podbean.com …..or whatever podcast app you favour.   If you dig what we do, could you please rate us at iTunes or even better, spread the word that the show exists on social media or at your next barbecue, gig, or marathon run so more folks can tune in.   Please join our friendly Facebook group at  http://www.facebook.com/groups/seehearpodcast   You can send us emails at seehearpodcast@gmail.com to suggest films you'd like us to discuss, give us your thoughts on what we do or anything else music-film related.
