They delve into Partlin's latest film, "God and Country," exploring its thematic focus on the intersection of faith and politics, particularly Christian nationalism's impact on American democracy and faith itself. The discussion covers Partlin's career trajectory, his approach to documentary filmmaking, and the motivations behind "God and Country," offering insights into the complex dynamics of political and religious identities in the United States. The conversation also touches on the challenges and responsibilities of addressing such a polarizing topic, aiming to foster a deeper understanding among viewers and encourage critical reflection on the roles of faith and nationalism in shaping public discourse and policy.Guest Bio:Dan Partland is a veteran Documentary Producer and Director for Film & Television. His work includes several landmark Nonfiction Films and Series of the past two decades. He has twice won the Emmy for Best Nonfiction Series and been twice nominated, Nonfiction Producer of the Year, by the Producers Guild of America.Partland cut his teeth in film, apprenticing with cinema verité pioneer Albert Maysles before launching his own New York based indie film collective, OTHER PICTURES (OPIX), where he produced numerous independent features, both scripted and documentary. While at OPIX, Partland partnered with first-time director Todd Solondz to produce Solondz' debut feature WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, which went on to win the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and become a cult classic. Next Partland collaborated with first time director Aiyana Elliott on, THE BALLAD OF RAMBLIN' JACK; an intimate and personal portrait of her legendary father and the experience of growing up a folk singer's daughter. Here at Cinema60 we've embraced the endless task of putting a pin in the entirety of Sixties cinema. However, one area where we have been remiss in our duties is documentaries – a genre that truly came into its own during this decade. Films like Robert Drew's Primary and Jean Rouch & Edgar Morin's Chronicle of a Summer began to break from the popular “voice of God” expository mode, giving way to a greater variety of non-fiction documentary filmmaking techniques. By the end of the decade, the narrated newsreel style was relegated primarily to television, and movie theaters were home to the newer forms. In this episode, Cinema60 looks at documentaries in 1969 – examining just how far the genre had progressed in ten years. Using Bill Nichols landmark text Representing Reality (1991) as a guide for describing what documentary looked like at the time, Bart and Jenna delve into the wealth of styles the genre had splintered into and take a look at some of the most exceptional documentaries ever made. The following films are discussed:• A Married Couple (1969) Directed by Allan King Starring Billy Edwards, Antoinette Edwards, Bogart Edwards• Salesman (1969) Directed by Albert Maysles, David Maysles & Charlotte Zwerin Starring Paul Brennan, Charles McDevitt, James Baker• In The Year of the Pig (1969) Directed by Emile de Antonio Starring Lyndon B. Senetchut Men Ab Nehti, best known as Sen M. Floyd, is a Brooklyn-born photographer/ cinematographer. Having picked up a small point-shoot camera in his early teen years as a means of creative expression, Senetchut transformed a hobby into a lifelong passion. Heavily influenced by New York City's diverse culture, Sen's raw approach towards his photography gives his work—motion and still —an organic characteristic. When he was fifteen Sen's work was featured in museum galleries such as the Studio Museum of Harlem, and the Jewish Museum. He began his study of storytelling through photography at the Tisch School of the Arts. Later, Sen studied documentary filmmaking under the guidance of Albert Maysles at the Maysles Institute and Cinema. He continued his quest for expanded cinematography skills at the Film Connection Institute, and later for portraiture at the New York Institute of Photography. In this episode Sen and I discuss How being raised by health conscious and spiritually aware parents impacted his upbringingFinding a balance between working with both cinematography and stillsBeing a documentarian of the current New York Hip-Hop scene and how Hip-Hop has influenced all of his workThe importance of legacy + longevityMMA as a spiritual practice and disciplineDaily visualization + meditation practicesMentorshipAdvice for photographers regarding workflow + subject connectionAnd the definition of Sen's name, his influences, and future worksPlease follow Sen on Instagram and check out all Sen's amazing work via his website here:www.senmfloyd.comhttps://www.instagram.com/sen.floyd/--Please subscribe and leave a short review if you've enjoyed this podcast; this support will really help us grow our platform immensely. Cryptsy, MtGox etc hacked. Everything going to zero, only self custody BTC felt safe ⁃ Started with £200-300 ($500) and didn't put any more fiat in other than one investment in 2020 (that went to zero) ⁃ Got shilled QuarkCoin by Bill Still on cryptsy and accidentally sold the top. Got a DM from Jebus911 about another coin that went 70x ⁃ Up significantly in BTC early but down in USD in bear market. Lost a lot of BTC on things like BTCBuilder ⁃ Sold Cryptsy listings via API for months while at uni for free multiples before the alpha got leaked ⁃ Saw BTC as the solution following the financial crisis and levels of corruption and incompetenceMtGox ⁃ Gox was the main exchange and allegedly had a bot to buy back BTC that had been lost ⁃ Constant buy pressure caused the price to run ⁃ Unsure what the outcome would have been on the state of the market if it hadn't happened ⁃ Some friends got completely wiped by Gox ⁃ Psychologically put a lot of people off BTC having to consider the cost of buying the BTC they had lostTrading & Making It ⁃ Wouldn't consider ever having been a full time trader ⁃ It was more of a hobby or side hustle. Decisions mostly based on instinct and prior cycle behaviour ⁃ It's become much harder to call cycle bottoms and tops ⁃ People create narratives to rationalise things it's easier to learn from your own mistakes with time looking back ⁃ Above average at most things when actually trying, except League of Legends ⁃ Deep down believed he would eventually be a millionaire. Without crypto this would still have happened from acquisitions/startups ⁃ Opens you to being more risk tolerant in other areas of life e.g. taking stock vs salary ⁃ Easier to have conviction when you don't sit through large drawdowns and can gauge risk. “HODL is for poor people” unless disciplined you'll let your gains evaporate and might become a forced seller at the bottom ⁃ Tries to estimate probability of it being over on every dip. Wants to sell as close to the top as possible, can buy back higher if wrong. Won't work if you do this on every dipSupercycle ⁃ Idea of a Supercycle described by Su in earlier episode is probably right ⁃ If crypto becomes integrated into society and BTC becomes the store of value then it's the only thing that makes sense ⁃ Thinks it's not the right time for it to happen, integration is tertiary ⁃ If crypto disappears now how many lives are actually impacted ⁃ Unless you run …say a crypto podcast? (pls sir my family) ⁃ Maybe it is now but maybe it needs another boom/bust first before it reaches that level ⁃ Top 10/20 assets on CoinGecko right now – are we really ready for a supercycle??ETH ⁃ ETH DAO hack, ETC fork, ICOs put off. Didn't buy more ETH because conviction was low with all of this. Still held original ETH but could have rotated into buying much more ⁃ Instead of focusing on ponzification it's best to focus on change in products available e.g. genuine use case like lending on chain being built ⁃ Building blocks add value to the ecosystem because they enable future building blocks. OG DeFi protocols and things like MetaMask responsible for leading that changeFounding Lido & ETH 2.0 ⁃ Co-founded Lido but says Konstantin and Vasily are the real brains behind everything along with the core teams. Fought to not call it dPool. (Fought with Ledger to not have UpOnly called TokenTalk) ⁃ When PoS was created there was no real concept of DeFi ⁃ Staking Ethereum is just a better form of wrapped Ethereum and risk free yield is the bottom brick of DeFi ⁃ Thinks merge will be Q2/Q3 or later. Beacon chains have been live for a whole ⁃ People will think it's bullish but $35B on the beacon chain will become unlocked too⁃ Wider ETH community attitude to scaling is bad in level of acknowledgement it's atrociously bad right now. Optimistic roll ups have felt like a disappointment so far and ZK aren't EVM compatible yet ⁃ Misaligned incentives between people who got rich holding ETH and the usability of the network ⁃ Equally sceptical of alternative L1s. Fragmented liquidity and most will fail to sustain ecosystems without incentives ⁃ Easier to trust that ETH will be around in future vs a coin flip on some other L1s. Max 5% survive and likely still struggle. Maybe new L1s just keep getting funded forever?Identifying the Meta ⁃ Used to be buying things before it got listed on exchange, playing on APIs ⁃ Moved to buying when it listed on smaller exchanges before it hit the bigger exchanges ⁃ Shifted again to how to get coins before they hit any exchange and people would monitor BitcoinTalk and cloud mining was popular ⁃ 2017 was ICO meta trying to get in before main token sale ⁃ 2020 was DeFi farming ⁃ 2021 was BTC -> ETH -> DeFi complacency -> meme coins -> NFTs -> L1s and OHM forks ⁃ What's next? There is no crystal ball, you can guess the narrative that makes sense or watch what's happening and being aggressive when you spot it ⁃ Short term playing the meta it doesn't have to make sense a lot of the time it's just a game of chicken anyway. Narrative just needs PMF ⁃ People assume they're already late rather than factoring in if the narrative really takes off ⁃ Narrative can drive both supply and demand and people underestimate how it can get out of hand ⁃ Figuring out the meta game is the most important thing and how to make money in crypto. Avoid things like YouTube they're good at content marketing not crypto ⁃ Have to avoid maximalism and accept these trades and rotationsBear Market Predictions ⁃ Metaverse and GameFi have crazy valuations but a couple with war chests that will enable them to keep building in a bear market ⁃ Main goal can possibly become preserving the treasury vs delivering ⁃ Meme coins all to zero ⁃ Anything with a constant token emission requirement all to zero ⁃ Regulations could cause decentralised in name only projects to disappear ⁃ Young hungry teams will keep building ⁃ 60% of people who made life changing money this cycle will lose it allWorking in Crypto & DAOs ⁃ Shift recently between keeping a normal job alongside crypto to now. It's become much more mainstream and more risk effective to now join a crypto project or protocol. In crypto it can be better to be an early employer vs founder which is quite different to traditional tech ⁃ DAO currently a type of regulatory arbitrage which operates worse but can have a token. There are examples of very good and very bad DAOs ⁃ Best DAOs won't be the ones people like in a bull market, maybe even those with concentrated ownership like 15 addresses vs retail owners getting angry at teams over token economics ⁃ DAOs will demand a new type of VC. More contributor type VC involvement e.g. what Paradigm and Delphi are moving towardsFinding a Crew ⁃ Early days had a TG group called 27 club to talk about the markets and probably wouldn't have made it in crypto without it. 70/80% of the members did not make it in crypto ⁃ Most people who make it have a group like this to share alpha. Essential to have people in your life who are all inMaximalism ⁃ Picking a group and hating an opposing group is historically quite common for humans ⁃ BTC and ETH maxi people are very similar people that would be friends irl but project hatred at each other online instead ⁃ BTC maximalism used to be people speculate on new things while quietly all knowing that BTC was the only thing really worthwhile but could experiment to see if there was value elsewhere ⁃ Fees similarly now except it's expanded beyond just BTC to a small number of other coins ⁃ Maximalism now has changed similarly to political influencers and become inflammatory and toxic ⁃ See it a lot now in BTC and ETH with the same talking points, it's counterproductive⁃ Staying open minded is only positive for you as a person within this space. On a long enough timeline all maximalists are wrong at some pointFuture Prediction ⁃ Most probable future is maybe a KYC country chain with DeFi, but without governance tokens, with the base currency being a CBDCRisk Management Pyramid Changes ⁃ Reason it's wrong is that if you take a 5% entry in something risky that performed really well, by constantly taking off the position to keep it at 5% you'd ruin your upside ⁃ Pyramid makes sense as an entry tool and rebalancing once the trade actually ends makes more sense ⁃ There'll be an updated version coming soonFinal Alpha ⁃ “Tyranny is the deliberate removal of nuance” – Albert Maysles ⁃ Be wary of anyone intentionally removing or ignoring nuance from a conversation as often they have an agenda ⁃ Being a structured critical thinker is probably the most important thing going into 2022 and the following decadeNotes by Kevin and LukeMusic by GiovanniPickle

Nikita Gale speaks with Alexander Provan about Tina Turner, Phil Spector, and the prospect of being heard without being controlled. Gale tells the story of the genre-busting song that Turner and Spector, the infamous producer, recorded in 1966, “River Deep—Mountain High”: a commercial failure but a creative breakthrough for Turner, who had previously been defined as an R&B singer and dominated by her abusive husband and bandmate, Ike Turner. Gale, an artist who has often engaged with Turner's music and biography, talks about the song as a symbol for how the music industry determines whose voices are amplified and whose are silenced. She observes that the segregation of cities in midcentury America was echoed on the airwaves, and the definition of audiences via racial and demographic categories has been upheld by record labels, Spotify, and the Grammys.Nikita Gale is an artist who lives in Los Angeles. In addition to co-hosting Medium Rotation, Gale has worked with Triple Canopy on a residency at the Hammer Museum and a related series of performances and publications. Gale's recent and upcoming projects include exhibitions at the California African American Museum (Los Angeles) and LAX Art (Los Angeles), a commissioned performance at MoMA PS1 (New York City), and the record and book INFINITE RESOURCES (Aventures, 2021).In this episode, Gale draws on her essay “Little Girls,” published by Triple Canopy last year, which describes “River Deep—Mountain High” as the zenith of Spector's “wall of sound” technique—and as “the sound of being together—or of being packed together, forced together.” (A reading of Gale's essay by Kaneza Schaal is available as a bonus episode.) Gale connects Turner's effort to transcend the role of R&B singer, Spector's desire to defy genre, and her own frustration as a teenager in Atlanta with radio stations that played rap for Black listeners and alt-rock for white ones. With Provan, she speaks about the production and reception of “River Deep—Mountain High” as part of the trajectory from “race records” in the 1920s to “urban contemporary” in the 1970s to the ongoing subsumption of most genres by pop music. In order of appearance, the music and other recordings played on this episode are: Tina Turner performing in Gimme Shelter (Maysles Films, 1970), directed by David Maysles, Albert Maysles, and Charlotte Zwerin; Tracy Chapman, “Fast Car,” Tracy Chapman (Elektra, 1988); Tyler, the Creator speaking to the press after winning Best Rap Album at the Grammy Awards, 2020; outtakes from the recording of “River Deep—Mountain High,” from Ike & Tina Turner, What You See Is What You Get (Big Fro, 2018); the Ronettes, “Walking in the Rain” (Philles, 1964); Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats (a.k.a. Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm), “Rocket 88” (Chess, 1951); Tina Turner interviewed on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” May 31, 1984; Phil Spector inducting Ike & Tina Turner into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, 1991; interview with Phil Spector from All You Need Is Love: The Story of Popular Music (London Weekend Television, 1977), directed by Tony Palmer; Brian Gibson, dir., What's Love Got to Do with It (Touchstone Pictures, 1993).Medium Rotation is produced by Alexander Provan with Andrew Leland, and edited by Provan with Matt Frassica. OLYMPIA is a sublimely intimate fly-on-the-wall verité documentary that tells a poignant story of a woman finding her own voice on her own terms to assert a gigantic creative force into the world. Rebelling against her suspicious Greek mother to assert her strong sexual drive, fighting the feeling she was “too ethnic” in Boston, and starting her own theatre company in New Jersey instead of waiting for the phone to ring, Olympia Dukakis models how to live life with blazing courage. Throughout an engrossing story that seamlessly blends past and present, she opens her heart and exposes her truest self to Harry Mavromichalis' unobtrusive camera. The raw honesty with which Olympia leads us into the core of herself is what makes this film luminary. As fellow actors with whom she has shared the limelight Laura Linney, Diane Ladd, Whoopi Goldberg, and Armistead Maupin all testify, Olympia is “totally open and crazy”, which is what turns out to be the marker of her absolute sanity. OLYMPIA's intimate portrait of a working class professional, a scholar actor of intuitive power, and a woman beloved around the world, culminates on the steps of the Dukakis' humble ancestral home in Lesbos, Greece. Through her brutal honesty and sincerity, Olympia compels us to confront our own shortcomings and differences by letting go, and move forward with defiant conviction. Director Harry Mavromichalis takes a page from the Albert Maysles' school of fly-on-the-wall verité documentary storytelling leaving the viewer with an appreciation of an artist becoming her own woman, on her own terms, primed to share her creative insights with the world. It's Britney babe! Britney Spears , who typically posts somewhat blurry, highly edited or cryptic pictures, upped her Instagram game on Wednesday, April 8. The 39-year-old pop singer, who was the subject of Framing Britney Spears , posted a new video to show off a few of her favorite fashion looks, which went way beyond her oft-worn peasant blouse . And damn – not only were her transitions top notch, but the star proved she's got some serious style! “ I found my cat suit … No luck finding my mask but at least I found my body !!!! Stay joyful my friends and do what makes you happy by darn it !!!! God bless ,” the “Circus” singer captioned the post, which she shared with her 29.2 million followers. In the high-quality clip, which was played to the beat of Pharell's “Happy,” Spears rocks a total of 4 different looks ranging from downright sexy and scandalous to classic ‘90s. For her first outfit, Spears slipped into an itty-bitty green mini skirt, white turtleneck and leather jacket with fur trimming. She accessorized the look with white high socks and rhinestone-embellished boots. If you ask Us , the next look was hands-down the star of the show. The “Toxic” vocalist, who shares sons Sean Preston and Jayden James with ex-husband Kevin Federline, slipped into a very sexy leotard, or as she calls it, a “catsuit.” Dressed in the skin-tight and see-through number, Spears gave viewers a little “meow” before swiping the camera up to her next look, which was by far the most tried and true Britney Spears ensemble we've ever seen. Wearing little low-rise white shorts and cropped peasant style blouse that showed off her taught tummy, the star did a catwalk down her balcony. She quickly tossed to her next and final look, a pink floral mini with puff sleeves. Like most of Spears' Instagram posts, the video blew up, attracting more than 900,000 likes and 18,000 comments in under 24 hours. Both the Britney Army and those active in the #FreeBritney movement made sure to call out how the post was a departure from her typically less-produced posts. From Publisher: Us Weekly 20 years before #FreeBritney, a revealing Britney Spears doc The first time director Judy Hoffman goes in for a superstar close-up of Britney Spears in the rarely circulated 2002 documentary “Stages: Three Days in Mexico,” the performer is soldiering through yet another photo scrum in what was, already, a long, wearying line of press “events,” this time in a Mexico City Four Seasons banquet hall. Bright, cold red, white and blue illumination from Pepsi's sponsor signage provides the background, while a wall of flashbulbs lights up the foreground. Spears, then 20 and at the end of a grueling world tour, smiles and holds it, just as filmmaker Hoffman, who teaches film studies at the University of Chicago, and her legendary cinematographer, documentary pioneer Albert Maysles, hold the shot just long enough for a question to form in the viewer's mind: How long has this hard-working, indelible pop export, this culturally necessary boy-band antidote, held that smile, exactly? A minute? An entire world tour?

It's obviously not just the film industry that's having trouble during the pandemic; the music industry's working bands have found their main revenue stream of touring currently not an option for this last year. Here we discuss:- these two Bay Area concert docs of the late '60s;- Janis Joplin and Otis Redding's iconic performances in the former;- the snuff film aspects of the latter;- the forced-mythologized bookending of both;- their cameramen directors D.A. Pennebaker and the Maysles Bros;- and other contributors such as Shelter's co-director and -editor Charlotte Zwerin.Also:- How Sun June literally started out in an editing room;- what their working band entails now with members across multiple cities;- rock critic Robert Christgau's clear-eyed essay “Anatomy of a Love Festival”;- what Albert Maysles told me when I interviewed him in 2000;- how wildly different the industry was financially between now and 1967;- and what techniques these docs can have for a modern band making their own videos and controlling their own image.Colwell, along with being lead singer and keyboard player for Sun June, works in the film industry and has edited features and docs, including Also Starring Austin, about the city's history on film. Salisbury, Sun June's guitarist, also worked in the film industry on films such as Knight of Cups, Song to Song, and the doc Becoming Leslie. For this episode Carol is in conversation with award-winning director José Padilha. Jose is a critically-acclaimed filmmaker for both his nonfiction and fiction (Narcos, Elite Squad) work. His feature doc directing debut Bus 174 chronicles the hijacking of a public bus in Rio de Janeiro on 12th June 2000. With real-time media footage we follow the events of a young and armed man taking the eleven other passengers hostage. At the same time José explores the societal factors that contributed to the young man's homelessness and alienation. José and Carol will discuss the impact that Bus 174 had on his career - and how filmmakers such as Albert Maysles and Jonathan Demme supported him along the way. You can watch this Peabody-winning doc on Kanopy. They also discuss José's choice for inspirational documentary: Leon Gast's Academy Award- winning When We Were Kings. The film chronicles the famous 1974 heavyweight championship, baptised ‘The Rumble In The Jungle', between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali. Watch When We Were Kings on BBC iPlayer. Finally, Carol and José revisit the film through which they met: Secrets of the Tribe (2010), which Carol produced and José directed. The BBC Storyville film was eight years in the making, had its world premiere at Sundance, and was bought by HBO. Through the stories of Yanomami anthropologists Napoleon Chagnon and Jacques Lizot, the film casts doubt on the entire science of anthropology. Ronnie Schneider is best known for being the business presence at the center of pivotal 1960s events including the Altamont Free Concert, the dissolution of The Beatles and the reorganization of their business arm, Apple Corps. Schneider managed the early US tours of The Rolling Stones while simultaneously dealing with the financial affairs of some of the biggest names in rock n' roll history including the Stones, The Beatles, Neil Sedaka, Sam Cooke, Nancy Wilson, Bobby Vinton, Herman’s Hermits and the Shirelles.Acting on behalf of The Rolling Stones, Schneider hired the Maysles Brothers to film The Rolling Stones' Madison Square Garden Concert for promotional purposes. This led to filming the free outdoor concert The Rolling Stones gave at the Altamont Raceway Park in Northern California in early December 1969 which became the film Gimme Shelter for which Schneider was credited as Executive Producer. This acclaimed concert documentary horrified participants and viewers alike. Capturing the scene of a man (Meredith Hunter) brutally stabbed to death by the Hells Angels, it remains one of the most successful concert films ever made. Schneider also appears in several key scenes in the movie, negotiating the choice of location for the concert, attempting to get adequate security for the show, and notably, escaping by helicopter with The Rolling Stones as the scene spun out of control.Ronnie wrote about his rock n' roll  days in his autobiography "Out of Our Heads with Proof of Truth: The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Me". Learn more about Lyte

This film chronicles an aspect of the legendary Muhammad Ali that doesn't get discussed too much...the times he got his ass beat. It happens to the best of us, and even Ali had to lose eventually. But the guy who beat him, Larry Holmes, defended his title a record 16 times over the years and yet the average person likely doesn't know who he is. Much less that the guy is a fantastic singer who is as down-to-earth as a heavy-weight champ can be. Seriously, Larry Holmes likes to sing. Come sing with us. Bet you can't last 10 rounds. 5 Ways to Nurture Your Doc LifeThere are many ways that we documentary filmmakers take care of ourselves, or perhaps maybe more aptly put, do not take care of ourselves. And with the long hours, sometimes limited budgets, sometimes other day jobs, family life, you name it.. it's no wonder that we doc lifers sometimes tend to neglect our emotional and physical well being.   Which is why I'm here to give you a little primer to help steer you back to the path of emotional, physical, and creative success in your own doc life.   Podcast ConversationDocumentary filmmaker (and big proponent of meditation!), Rebecca Dreyfus joined me in our shared Conversation. Dreyfus has been working in documentary for 20 years, since her first feature, Bye-Bye Babushka first came on the scene and was quickly noticed by documentary legend, Albert Maysles, who would then go on to be lead camera in Dreyfus' critically-acclaimed follow-up, Stolen.  A mentorship would soon blossom from this collaboration.   Dreyfus' current documentary film, http://onmeditation.com/ (On Meditation), takes a look at the age-old practice of meditation as told through the eyes of established names who attribute the practice to much of their personal and professional success.   Topics Discussedthe value of true persistence as a documentary filmmaker the importance of a mentor and how to go about finding one key advice for first-time documentary filmmakers what part the practice of meditation plays in the creative process   Related Resources° Watch the trailer for Rebecca Dreyfus' https://vimeo.com/ondemand/onmeditation (On Meditation) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1_g5F_mp14   ° Trailer for the acclaimed documentary film http://stolenthefilm.com/ (Stolen ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG0-st-5H6E   #DocLifer of the Week As mentioned in our #DocLifer Community Question of the Week, check out the trailer for fellow #DocLifer, Jaime's current documentary project, http://www.mahjongmovie.com/ (Masters of Mahjong) https://vimeo.com/220673394   Sponsors & Thank You'shttp://freemusicarchive.org/ (Free Music Archive) – Special Thank You to recording artist, http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Dlay/ (Dlay) who supplied the song Whatever for this week's episode of TDL. Albert Maysles was an important member of our extended Film Society family. "Grey Gardens" premiered at the 13th New York Film Festival in 1975 and IRIS had its world premiere here at the 52nd NYFF last year. The film follows Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even in Iris' dotage, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. I hans film får man se sannningen! Men inget hände.

Here's The Thing with Alec Baldwin

Alec talks with director Joe Berlinger about his latest film for HBO Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory -- the third film in a series of documentaries about a crime that took place 18 years ago in rural Arkansas. Berlinger says, “We made these three movies as acts of advocacy” – which is not his usual style as a long-time documentary filmmaker. “I believe the audience should be treated like a jury. You give them the information, you weigh both sides, and you let them come to their own conclusion.” These films were different, acknowledges Berlinger: “We clearly have a point of view that there is a huge injustice.” Early in his career, Berlinger worked for famed documentarians David and Albert Maysles. He says the Maysles brothers taught him about “The act of faith about making a film about real life as it's unfolding.” Berlinger is known for his documentary work, has dabbled in features, but says he'd “love another opportunity to do a feature at some point, but, you know, I'm just used to being the author of my own work, being totally in control.” Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com
