With their fearsome talons, acid poo and a penchant for rotting carcasses, the vulture has long been shouldered with associations of death, and dishonour. This taboo often puts them bottom of the list for conservation projects. Conservationist Sacha Dench visits three different vulture species, each with an extraordinary story of persecution and survival. In India, vulture populations collapsed by 99.9%, the sharpest decline of any animal ever recorded. Debbie Pain and Chris Bowden describe the urgent international collaborative effort that brought them back from the very brink of extinction. In South Africa, the White Backed Vulture has become collateral damage in the ongoing war between poachers and game-keepers. Finally, in Guinea-Bissau, vultures are the victim of cultural practices which see their bodies as having magical properties.

A reminder to construction workers to keep looking out for each other on World Suicide Prevention Day.    MATES in Construction's recent survey finds 85% of workers reported good mental health last year, an improvement from previous years.   But also last year, 80 workers died from suspected suicides, a jump from previous years.  Dr Chris Bowden, MATES in Construction's Academic Director, told Kerre Woodham the participants in their study group talked a lot about the bullying, harassment, aggression, and conflict that was common on job sites, as well as the ritual hazing that often comes with being a new member of the community.  But on the plus side, he said, they heard that things are slowly changing in that culture, and people are starting to take safety and mental health and wellbeing a lot more seriously in the workplace.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Towards the end of the 20th Century, vulture populations across South Asia plummeted, with few species loosing up to 99% of their population.  The loss of vulture populations across the subcontinent has led to an ecological collapse and a public health crisis.  As very powerful scavengers, vultures play a critical role in the consumption of carcasses of not only dead wildlife, but also of livestock.  Following the vulture crisis, there was insufficient and inefficient removal of carcasses, providing havens for lesser scavengers, such as smaller rodents and feral dogs. In fact, the vulture crisis has been credited for the explosion of feral dog populations around India.Unlike vultures, which have corrosive digestive fluids to destroy these pathogens, these lesser scavengers become carriers of countless zoonotic diseases. It is no surprise that the 35 million feral dogs have become the primary transmitters of rabbis to communities around India. Moreover, these feral dogs also are destroying wildlife, by attacking prey species, transmitting diseases, such as canine distemper virus and competing with local predators, such as wolves and dholes. In this episode, I speak to Chris Bowden from the Royal Society of the Protection of Birds about the causes of the vulture crises and the broader ecological impact. We also talk about various conservation initiatives in India to tackle the vulture crisis, ranging from creating vulture safe zones and vulture conservation breeding programs around India.  This is a public episode. Life after football. Last year, I wrote down motivational statements on 31 index cards, for each day of the month. On the 26th day of each month, I read a card that says: "Take time to reflect and celebrate." "Reflect on where you are, how far you have come, and where you are going." "Celebrate your success and accomplishments, and celebrate the success and accomplishments of others." That is what we are doing today on this episode of Wisdom In The Room, as I sit down with Wingate great, Chris Bowden. During his career at Wingate, he racked up over 200+ receptions, 3,719 receiving yards, and 35 touchdowns. Throughout his time as a bulldog he earned prestigious awards such as, South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, First Team All-American, and was a Harlon Hill Nominee (Top 8 Finalist). It was a great pleasure to watch Chris play football. On every journey there are ups and downs that mold us into who we are becoming.
