Episode 83: Goodnight, Mary Magdalene first aired in June 2020 and features three poems by Vasiliki Katsarou, a poet and publisher. This time last year, Vasiliki published a new short collection of poetry Three Sea Stones with Solitude Hill Press. It's a great time to revisit Vasiliki's work. Dear Slushies, join the PBQ crew (which includes a freshly-tenured Jason Schneiderman) for a pre-pandemic recording of our discussion of 3 poems by the wonderful Vasiliki Katsarou's work. Be sure to read the poems on the page below as you listen. They'll require your eyes and ears– and “a decoder ring.” The team has a grand old time explicating these artful poems. The muses are sprung and singing in us as we read and decide on this submission. Katsarou's poems teach us to read them without projecting too much of ourselves and our current preoccupations onto them. We're reminded to pay attention to what's happening on the page. But synchronicities abound! Before we know it we're ricocheting off of the poems' images and noting the wonderful convergences the poems trigger – we hear traces of Wallace Stevens “Idea of Order of Key West” or Auden's Musee de Beaux Arts. (But first we check in with each other, cracking each other up in a pre-pandemic moment of serious lightness. We're heard that “Science” shows Arts & Humanities majors make major money in the long run. Kathy reports that “the data on success” shows that participation in Nativity Plays is a marker for career success. Samantha confesses she played Mary Magdalene in a Nativity Play. Marion might have been a Magi. And many of us were reindeer.. Also, Donkeys do better than sheep over time (which may or may not have been claimed on “Wait, wait… don't tell me!”). Editing a Lit Mag shouldn't be this much fun, Slushies. Listen through to the discussion of the 3rd poem's deep magic and craft. And listen to our editors' cats chime in). Addison Davis, Jason Schneiderman, Samantha Neugebauer, Kathleen Volk Miller, Marion Wrenn, and Joe Zang Vasiliki Katsarou grew up Greek American in Jack Kerouac's hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts. She has also lived in Paris, France, and Harvard, Mass. She is the author of a full-length poetry collection, Memento Tsunami, and co-editor of two contemporary poetry anthologies: Eating Her Wedding Dress: A Collection of Clothing Poems and Dark as a Hazel Eye: Coffee & Chocolate Poems. She holds an MFA from Boston University and an AB in comparative literature from Harvard University. She read her poetry at the 2014 Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival, and is a Teaching Artist at Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, New Jersey. Her poems have been published widely and internationally, including in NOON: Journal of the Short Poem (Japan), Corbel Stone Press' Contemporary Poetry Series (U.K.), Regime Journal (Australia), as well as in Poetry Daily, Tiferet: A Journal of Spiritual Literature, Wild River Review, wicked alice, Literary Mama, La Vague Journal, Otoliths, and Contemporary American Voices. She wrote and directed an award-winning 35mm short film, Fruitlands 1843, about a Transcendentalist utopian community in Massachusetts. Mary Haddow with the story of an unusual Nativity Play.
WATCH THE 2020 SALT HOUSE NATIVITY! Our theme of RISKING ADVENT invites us to stick our necks out and risk a bit of vulnerability during this season of waiting. For the final Sunday of Advent, we risk joy. Especially in this prolonged season of pandemic, joy seems elusive, and not worth the risk! But how does the story of God invite us into joy - especially now?
Hear a retelling of the Christmas Story at this Family Holiday Service and a presentation of the Nativity Play.
The nativity play has traditionally been a highlight of the Christmas. A video originally filmed in 1996 of one particular village church nativity has been viewed over two million times but for all the wrong reasons. Today's Martha Kearney spoke to the star of the video, Ellie Sergeant, who played Angel Number 3 and gained attention for her loud singing during the performance. Comedian and writer Fiona Frawley joins us to talk about the rite of passage for many Irish schoolchildren, The Nativity Play. Not Alan though, his school was run by lax Catholics who didn't bother with nativities. We talked about the plot, the theme, the characters of the nativity but also jumped off into a wider talk about growing up in a Catholic school system in a decreasingly Catholic society. That's right, we Juvenaliaed it. Fiona is @FionaFrawl. She's very funny, you should follow her. Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Sarah is @griffski. Her books are in all good bookshops. Thank you to Dee McDonnell for our artwork. We have a Patreon! You can get bonus episodes including our fortnightly show Started/Finished where we talk about the pop culture we started and finished in the previous two weeks. We also have some free lil bits of merch. It's patreon.com/juvenalia This episode was edited and produced by Alan Juvenalia is a Tall Tales podcast. Thank you Cassie.

After a much needed (though unwanted!) week off, the elves are back, and they're once again journeying across the pond to cover the 2009, Holiday-Comedy film, Nativity! There's plenty of love for this movie to go around this week - how could there not be when it stars Martin Freeman? - and there are laughs-a-plenty as the hosts talk about their favorite parts and scenes! Also discussed: plenty of listener feedback and their ideas for what they would do if they were put in charge of making the 2020 John Lewis commercial! So settle in, blast that air-conditioning, enjoy this festive episode, and celebrate the fact that we are officially only nineteen-weeks from Christmas!

The live "Good Times" was really fun. This 5-year old used the wrong finger in her Nativity play. What's up with the guy who stole $500 worth of shrimp? Candy cane Tootsie Pops. The highest-paid You Tube star. Pet etiquette. Paris Hilton stole "That's Hot" from her sister. The Oscars could go host-less again. Kate Beckinsale has some interesting advice. Back in 2012, a students from WIT teamed up with Beat 102-103 to produce a Nativity Play. To say this is a non-traditional version of the story would be an understatement. It's chock full of "interpretations" of hits from 2012 and some bizarre impressions. If you're looking for a laugh, your search is over

The one and only Jilly Cooper recently revealed her top tips for hosting a Christmas party. Naturally, they are fabulous. Zoe and Anna dissect Jilly’s hosting rules and throw in a few of their own. Bowl food, aggressive cornichon offerings and yellow food are all on the menu. The conversation turns to another festive staple: the school nativity play. Anna goes method in her portrayal of the donkey, Zoe has stage fright as Lady Macbeth and an inflatable sex toy makes an unwelcome appearance.
In the latest episode of GPK Radio I cover quite a bit of ground around a number of issues: Firstly, I open the debate/discussion around the culture in the school workplace around bullying and discuss how what happens in schools with pupils in regard to bullying can be quite different when it is staff that the institution has to deal with. Secondly, I have a look at the Christmas rush and all that can entail at this time of the year for teachers and that even small things like the finish of a Nativity Play can be a major landmark as we near the end of term. I also talk about using this time of year to review where we personally are at regarding our own delivery of lessons and educational experiences for the children in our classes and as to how we can and should seek to INSPIRE LEARNING as opposed to covering content. Schools have to be willing to make difficult decisions around some of the children that I engage with because quite simply what they have been doing to date has obviously not been effective in bringing about positive changes, in this episode that may also be applicable to they way in which SLT/School Managers/Principals deal with their staff during the course of a school year. Indeed the great Albert Einstein is broadly credited with exclaiming “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”. With Christmas just around the corner, we concentrate on children; a Nativity Play written, directed and acted by the children from the Presentation Primary School in Listowel, how the older children at St Declan's secondary school in Cabra show the true spirit of the season by helping senior citizens in their area.
