This episode of Big Blend Radio’s “Music Monday” Show features singer-songwriter Deborah Crooks from the California band Bay Station. Hear about some of the songs and stories from their new EP “Beyond the Safe & Sound.” Named for the historic train station in Alameda, California, near where its core members live, Bay Station organically came together in 2013 after Deborah Crooks and Kwame Copeland began co-writing after years making music as solo artists. They soon brought in fellow Alamedan Steve Waters on lead guitar and vocals. As they did on their previous three releases, Your Own Reaction (2014 under their former name, KCDC), Go Out and Make Some (2016) and Other Desert Cities (2018), they called on Ben Bernstein and Mike Stevens to round out the rhythm section. Bay Station continues to blend elements of folk, rock, blues and Americana on their fourth recorded collection. Originally planning to head to the east coast to record with Stevens in his Connecticut studio, the band pivoted after the pandemic hit, staying local, and playing weekly porch concerts for their neighbors. Motivated by current events, they began writing new songs and shelving others that no longer seemed relevant to the project.  In mid-summer, they started recording tracks at home, sending digital files to Bernstein and Stevens to complete their parts. Out on all digital platforms, “Beyond the Safe & Sound” reflects on a year like no other.

Thomas Sadoski, Thomas Mazziotti and Face2face host David Peck talk about The Mimic, socio-paths, loss, the old school, mental health issues, rapid fire dialogue, and why you need to keep ringing the bell.TrailerFind out more about the film here.Synopsis:Based on a true story, this clever, intriguing, and hyperbolic comedy follows the main character - the Narrator (Thomas Sadoski) who is befriended by his young new neighbor 'the Kid’ (Jake Robinson), after he joins the local newspaper team. Obsessed with the idea that the Kid may be a sociopath, the Narrator goes to extreme lengths to uncover the truth about him and his wife, a woman he ultimately begins to fancy.Between long walks down the street, a twisted dinner date, and a car drive gone terribly wrong, the Narrator gets closer and closer to the truth about the Kid. But the truth, as he finds, is anything but what he expected. "Sociopaths have been portrayed as a shady bunch up until now. Inspired by true events, this confrontational comedy explores the uncharted territory of the lighter side of a sociopath,” says Mazziotti. “I applaud Gravitas Ventures introducing audiences to an alternate character dynamic which has yet to be portrayed under comedic scrutiny on screen, yet he lives among us all.”About Thomas and Thomas:Thomas Sadoski will next star in the upcoming CBS series Tommy, which stars Edie Falco as the first female chief of police for Los Angeles. Equal parts political, procedural, and family drama, Tommy comes from Paul Attanasio, the creator of Bull and Homicide: Life on the Street. On the big screen, he was most recently featured alongside Shirley MacLaine and Amanda Seyfried in The Last Word, directed by Mark Pellington, and reprised his role as Jimmy in John Wick: Chapter Two, starring Keanu Reeves. He will next star in the independent comedy The Mimic, which also stars Jake Robinson, Gina Gershon and Jessica Walter, and will soon begin production opposite Lucy Liu in the romance drama, The Last Weekend in May, for director Matthew Lillard.A veteran of the stage, Sadoski most recently starred in the Public Theater production of the new Suzan-Lori Parks play, White Noise, directed by Oskar Eustis with Daveed Diggs. Over the course of his stage career, he has starred in and earned raves for his performances in a wide variety of Broadway and off-Broadway productions. His most recent New York stage appearance was opposite Amanda Seyfried in the off-Broadway production of Neil LaBute’s The Way We Get By. His previous collaboration with LaBute on reasons to be pretty earned Sadoski a nomination for a Tony Award in the Leading Actor Category, as well as Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Award nominations. Sadoski’s other Broadway credits include Other Desert Cities for which he won an Obie Award, The House of Blue Leaves with Ben Stiller and Edie Falco, and Reckless, his Broadway debut opposite Mary-Louise Parker.Off-Broadway credits include Sam Mendes’s Bridge Project productions of As You Like It and The Tempest, Becky Shaw for which he won a Lucille Lortel Award, This is Our Youth with Mark Ruffalo, the world premiere of Elizabeth Merriweather’s The Mistakes Madeline Made, Gemini, Stay, Where We’re Born, Jump/Cut, All This Intimacy, and The General From America.Sadoski’s film credits include the critically-acclaimed film I Smile Back with Sarah Silverman and Josh Charles, the award-winning John Marc Vallee film Wild with Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, John Wick with Keanu Reeves, Take Care with Leslie Bibb, and many others. In addition to his role as Don Keefer on HBO’s Golden Globe-nominated Aaron Sorkin series The Newsroom and the hit CBS comedy Life in Pieces, his television credits include the NBC mini-series, The Slap, a recurring role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and guest starring roles on and Ugly Betty, Law & Order: Criminal Intent. A graduate of Circle in the Square Theater School in New York City, Sadoski has worked extensively to help develop new theatrical works at New Dramatists, The Lark, The Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center and the Sundance Institute. In his free time, he works closely with the organizations INARA and War Child, which work to support children affected by war. Sadoski resides in Los Angeles.Thomas Mazziotti started in television production at WPIX in New York before graduating both from college and into filmmaking at the same time. He attended the International Film and Television Workshops in Maine, as well as, Laguna Beach, CA.His first effort, The Beep, a 20-minute short film about a killer answering machine received theatrical distribution in N.Y. and L.A. due to a Fast Track article in New York magazine. This attention enabled him to option a play by Neil Bell performed at Playwrights Horizons in N.Y. and bring Sidney Lumet's producer on board to oversee the project. Undertow opened theatrically in N.Y. and garnished much attention due to its controversial subject matter of a young policeman entrapping a gay congressman on videotape. It stars Peter Dobson from Last Exit to Brooklyn.Tom then turned his attention to comedy and optioned a Canadian short story by Peter Sellers. Charlie Hoboken opened theatrically in N.Y. and stars Jennifer Esposito, Amanda Peet, Austin Pendleton, and Tovah Feldshuh. It tells the story of a fast-talking insurance salesman that makes ends meet by being a part-time hit man. The Mimic is Tom's third feature and first original screenplay. The Ojai Playwrights Conference, which takes over two weeks in August, is one the foremost cultural occasions in the country. Typically, the OPC selects eight plays for intensive workshops with experienced dramaturges, theater directors and producers, culminating in stage reads for the public in highly anticipated shows. Sadly, this year the in-person OPC was another victim of the pandemic. But Robert Egan, for 20 years the OPC's artistic director - along with the rest of the staff and board - was not deterred. Instead of moving past this fraught era, they went straight at it, with a lineup of 15 plays from a mix of first-time selections and established playwrights like Luis Alfaro, Jon Robin Baitz and Aziza Barnes. The new OPC Foundry Project will collaborate with eight playwrights developing seven new works, which will form the core of next year's conference. We talk with Egan about the central role the OPC has developed in the creation of new works for the theater, including a number of works that went straight from Ojai to Broadway, including "The Motherf**cker with the Hat," by Stephen Aidly Guirgus and "Other Desert Cities," by Robby Baitz, which was the longest running non-musical in Broadway history. Egan also talks about growing up tough in the Washington, D.C. area, where he made the school's Hall of Fame for two areas - football and theater - and where a brutal beatdown led to a memorable encounter with a police officer that changed the trajectory of his life. We did not talk about the infield fly rule, whether Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was an overrated general, or Boccacio's "Decameron." You can, however, learn more about the OPC's bold new initiatives at ojaiplays.org.

It is better, they say, to give than to receive. That must be why so many groups gather so often to give so many awards to so many people for their efforts in so many different art forms connected to so many different award-worthy fields of endeavor. Though most people in show business are buzzing about the upcoming Emmy awards, about 75 people gathered together on Monday, July 13, to watch the offbeat, quirky annual distribution of certificates known to local theater people as The Sonoma County Stage One Theatre Arts Awards, otherwise known as The SOTAs. Now in its seventh year, the stated purpose of the SOTAs is to honor theater artists and theater productions taking place in Sonoma County. The SOTAs have earned a fair share of criticism over the years for awarding the lion’s share of their honors to shows that, how do I say this delicately, are sometimes conspicuously less deserving of the word “excellence” than shows that were either minimally mentioned or not nominated at all - Main Stage West’s exceptionally strong "Other Desert Cities" is one example from this year’s list of howlingly embarrassing omissions. To the organization’s credit, under the direction of president Lito Briano, clear efforts have been made to make the distribution of awards more balanced and fair, and to do that more in the future, companies who feel they deserve more attention will have to step forward and work harder to get their own fans and followers to join as voting members. With the San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critics Circle having stepped up in the last few years to finally notice the work being done by some (but not enough) Sonoma County theaters, the SOTAs will have to step up their game even more to retain any semblance of relevance and credibility in the future. I say this with all hope that the SOTAs will do just that, because many of the smaller community theater companies and student productions honored by the SOTA’s certainly deserve some recognition, so vital are they as an engine of training and community good will throughout the theater scene. With all of that said, allow me to offer my congratulations for the twelve awards taken home by Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse, which donated it’s G.K. Hardt theater for the awards ceremony. Amongst those 6th Street artists honored were Best Director Bronwen Shears for her work on "The Beauty Queen of Leenane," actors Lennie Dean and Danielle Innocenti Beem for their performances in ‘Beauty Queen’ (that would be Lennie) and "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (that would be Beem), actor Mike Pavone for "Clybourne Park," and actor Dallas Munger for "The Glass Menagerie," that last one also winning awards for best scenic and sound design, and tying for Best Overall Production with "Phantom of the Opera," performed by Santa Rosa Junior College. ‘Phantom’ was the second-biggest winner of the night, also taking awards for Best Vocal Performance for a Male and Female - that would be Ezra Hernandez and Megan Fleishman - and other awards, including best costume and best makeup design. Mary Gannon Graham won the Best Actress award for her amazing work in Main Stage West’s "Mother Jones in Heaven," coincidentally now playing again in an encore run of the show featuring music by Si Kahn. And Raven Players won for best stage props for the prop-dependent drama "In the Next Room: or, the Vibrator Play," and yes, you may feel free to make jokes about the props needed for a play of that name. Congratulations to all the winners, and even those who did not walk off with a certificate, because the truth is, when there is this much good theater going on in a community of this size, everyone is a winner, especially the audience. I’m David Templeton, Second Row Center, for KRCB.

It’s awards season, and everyone’s talking about who got nominated and who didn’t. And no, I’m not talking about the Oscars. Last week, the San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critics Circle announced the nominees for its upcoming 29th annual awards ceremony, to be held Monday March 9, at the Victoria Theater in San Francisco. After decades of neglect from the Circle, which simply has had a majority of writers working and watching shows in the City, the East Bay and South Bay, the poor North Bay, and especially Sonoma County, has recently been enjoying a gradual shift in attention from the Circle, of which I am a member. Last year, there were actually a fair number of wins for a few surprised actors, directors and stage artists from North of the Golden Gate. With this year’s announcements though, it’s as if some sort of theatrical earthquake has hit the area, changing the geography so much that even Main Stage West, in far-from-the-Bridge Sebastopol got a number of well-deserved nominations. The reason for the change? It’s a mix of factors, one being simply that more North Bay theater critics have joined the circle of late, at the same time that the ranks of the circle have been declining due to attrition and other factors. So the odds once stacked impenetrably against Sonoma County theater artists are, for the time being, somewhat in our favor. There are, in fact, too many local names to mention all of them here, though I will point out a few highlights, and let you look for yourselves, if you find yourself curious. I’ll give the link to the Critics Circle web site in just a minute. Focusing primarily on Sonoma County, congratulations are due to Petaluma’s Cinnabar Theater, snapping up 22 nominations, including a Best Director nod for Sheri Lee Miller, for last year’s spectacular "Of Mice and Men," which also got nominations for Samson Hood for best Principle actor in a play, who played Lennie in the production also nominated for best show and best ensemble. Cinnabar was also awarded several nominations for its production of "The Marriage of Figaro," and for "Fiddler on the Roof," the latter snapping up a nomination for best principle actress for Elly Lichenstein and Best principle actor for Stephen Walsh. Nineteen nominations were awarded to Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse including several for choreography in a musical - congrats to Stacie Ariaga and Joseph Favalora for their work on "Grease" and "Victor/Victoria," both for Stacie, and "Thoroughly Modern Milly," that one for Joe. 6th Street also several got nominations for acting, including a much-deserved nomination for Abbey Lee, stealing every scene and dazzling audience with her hilarious strip-tease seduction in "Victor Victoria," and Larry Williams, doing the same thing, sort of, with exhausting-to-watch energy in the comedy "Boing Boing." Other acting nominations include one for Trevor Hoffman who played Kinicki in 6th Street’s production of "Grease." Other companies honored are Spreckels Performing Arts Center, with a whopping 25 nominations, including acting nods for members of "The Book Of Matthew Liebowits," "Annie Get Your Gun," "Oliver!," and "Bell, Book and Candle," and "Scrooge the Musical". Then there’s Main Stage West, with fourteen nominations, including one for Mary Gannon Graham for her work in "Mother Jones in Heaven," directing nods for Sheri Lee Miller for "T.I.C. Trenchcoat in Common" and Beth Craven for "Yankee Tavern," and acting nominations for Sheri Lee Miller (a good year for her) for her work in "Other Desert Cities," which also got nominations for Sharia Pierce. Whew! These names are just the tip of the iceberg. To read them for yourself, and get info on how you can attend and cheer on our local heroes, go to the website at SFBATCC.ORG, those being, of course, the initials of the San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critics Circle. Opinions expressed are those of the reviewer, not those of Peoria Public Radio or the Live Theatre League. Sometimes, I am astounded by the talent on Peoria area stages, and “Other Desert Cities” -- currently playing at Corn Stock Winter Playhouse -- is an excellent example. The cast is outstanding, and the play moves along to a riveting climax. Paul Gordon is to be commended for assembling an all star cast and directing with such finesse. Psychologists tell us that keeping secrets within a family can result in misunderstanding and faulty family dynamics, and this play illustrates that nicely. The play opens on Christmas Eve, 2004 in Palm Springs, California, with the Wyeth family coming in from a tennis match. All seems happy and light, but as secrets unfold we start to see the

Elizabeth Marvel talks about whether being "a bad kid" has influenced her more daring stage performances, and discusses the challenges of remaining alienated from her on stage family in Jon Robin Baitz's "Other Desert Cities" while she grows ever closer to her castmates. She also discusses how she was drawn to theatre after a small town upbringing, including the moment when she knew she had to act; the influence of her Juilliard mentor, the late Michael Langham, both on her craft and her career; how she managed to get jobs at Canada's Stratford Festival, The Guthrie and A.R.T in her first year out of school; what it was like to switch between Mark Ravenhill's "Shopping and Fucking" and Wendy Wasserstein's "An American Daughter" in the same year; why she is so drawn to work with director Ivo van Hove on such classic plays as "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "The Little Foxes", and how that work has expanded her range as an actor; how her pregnancy informed her performance as a lizard in Edward Albee's "Seascape"; what it was like to work with playwright and director Woody Allen; how violence has been a recurring theme in her performances, including Michael Weller's "50 Words"; and how she handled the decidedly mixed response from audiences to Caryl Churchill's "Top Girls". Original air date - March 2, 2011.

Stockard Channing discusses her work in Jon Robin Baitz's new play "Other Desert Cities", acknowledging the ambiguity of the character for the audience and explaining whether she has defined her character's secret motivations with certainty. She also talks about her years breaking into theatre at Harvard, alongside other students like John Lithgow and Tommy Lee Jones, and her subsequent work around Boston before coming to New York and getting her increasingly bigger break in the Broadway musical "Two Gentlemen of Verona", which also began her association with John Guare; her years in Los Angeles, including a film gig she did simply because she needed money, namely "Grease"; her return to the stage in successive productions of "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg" at Williamstown, Long Wharf, Roundabout and finally Broadway; being given the opportunity to choose between playing Bunny and Bananas in the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of "The House of Blue Leaves"; how it felt, as a native Upper East Side New Yorker, playing an Upper East Side New Yorker in "Six Degrees of Separation", and how her performance had to change when she acted in the film version; whether she knew how divided response would be to Guare's "Four Baboons Adoring the Sun"; why she wasn't daunted about stepping into the shoes of Rosemary Harris or Katharine Hepburn for "The Lion in Winter" in 1999 -- and what about doing the show did give her pause; what it was like to do "Pal Joey", her first musical in over two decades (having previously followed Liza Minnelli into "The Rink"); and how she approached the role of Lady Bracknell in "The Importance of Being Earnest" for a production at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, Ireland last year. Original air date - February 2, 2011.
