Both Andy and Chris bring valuable insights from their extensive experience, emphasizing the significance of understanding the retail environment and the challenges faced by employees in stores. They underscore the idea that success in the retail sector hinges on empathizing with the team, listening to their experiences, and recognizing the integral role of the people within the organization. One central theme that emerges is the importance of agility and adaptability. Both guests acknowledge the rapidly changing landscape of the retail industry and advocate for being responsive to customer needs and market trends. They highlight the need for flexible strategies that can evolve with the business. Andy and Chris argue for the incorporation of innovation throughout the company, as opposed to isolating it within a separate department. They suggest that fostering a culture where innovation is part of everyone's role, alongside embracing risk-taking and learning from failure, can lead to successful, continuous innovation. Moreover, the discussion highlights the power of leveraging the wealth of knowledge and experience within the organization. Chris shares examples of how some of the most innovative ideas at Urban Outfitters originated from employees working on the front lines. These individuals, with their deep understanding of the business's daily operations, were best positioned to identify areas for improvement and innovation. By involving employees from various departments and actively listening to their insights, companies can harness the creative potential of their workforce and drive meaningful change. In conclusion, the conversation underscores the vital role of employees and team collaboration in shaping a company's strategies and success within the ever-evolving retail landscape. It highlights the need for a dynamic and adaptive approach to meet customer demands and adapt to changing industry trends while maintaining a strong focus on the people who drive the business forward.

If your reputation or the reputation of your business gets trashed online, it can have a lasting impact. But there are things that you can do today to limit the impact of negative online statements about you and some of them are easier than you might expect. Our guest today is Chris Silver Smith. Chris is the CEO of Argent Media, a marketing agency focused heavily on reputation management where Chris helps people clean up their reputations in search engines. Chris has also served as an expert witness in defamation lawsuits in state and federal court. In his long time column at Search Engine Land, he has advocated for reputation victims. Show Notes: [1:00] - Chris started his career in internet marketing and designing. He also worked for Verizon for many years and eventually made his way into researching and developing SEO (search engine optimization). [2:28] - After working for Verizon, he moved on to working for SEO companies and became intrigued by reputation management which was predicted to be fast-growing. [3:37] - Reputation management is compelling to Chris because of the personal stories that get involved with it. [4:20] - Reputation management could mean helping companies whose CEOs may have made a social media mistake or even smaller companies who have negative reviews. [5:48] - Chris shares a story about a CEO who was accused of many things by an escort and truly had not done the things he was accused of. [6:50] - Sometimes the bad reputation is because of actual unwise decisions that people have made. [7:35] - Chris says that his most memorable personal case was a porn revenge situation who was a trafficking victim. Chris wound up working as an expert witness for free. [9:30] - The woman did eventually get away from her harasser and he followed through with his threats of ruining her reputation. But she won the lawsuit and felt that her negative reputation was completely created by her harasser. [10:40] - There are more common reputation management cases that Chris has seen several times, such as college or high school students getting in trouble with the police. [11:21] - When I say reputation management, usually that means something bad appears when you google someone’s name. [12:33] - Chris has dealt many times with fake mugshot sites that post mugshots and charge a fee for people to take them down. [13:45] - After Google de-optimized these mugshot sites, it is easier to take these posts down with Chris’s help. [15:39] - There’s so much out there and it is so easy to defame people on the internet. [17:11] - Chris references the story of the sex trafficking victim to answer how some of these reputation management victims don’t care about the money. They really want their reputation cleared and prove that the accusations are false. [20:10] - People who have had their reputation damaged or attacked often have a really severe emotional response to it and are referred to counseling. [21:20] - People are surprised at how easy it is for their reputation to suddenly become tarnished. [22:24] - It is important to know the difference between your public persona and a private one and curate what you put up publicly. Maintaining this can come in handy when your reputation is attacked. [23:34] - Chris shares a story about a competitor who purchased the domain name for his new business and how he was able to amicably solve the problem. [26:04] - A strong online presence is a good idea. You should have a personal website and periodically Google your name. [26:50] - Chris recommends using Tumblr, Flickr, and YouTube under your name that could help create an online presence that would show up in the search results. [28:31] - Even informal stuff is great for basic SEO. Use your name as often as you can. [29:00] - It may feel like you’re overhyping yourself, but that’s optimization. Search engines work off text. [30:02] - Facebook is great because you can have a personal page for friends and family but can simultaneously have a business page. [31:47] - Chris shares many examples of common mistakes people make when video and audio is being recorded. [32:50] - Remember that every single thing you do publicly now is likely to be recorded and can be uploaded either on purpose or accidentally. [33:10] - Chris shares a story of employees who were connected to a man who ran a cult. They disclosed it and moved on. [35:02] - Chris’s wife’s name is Karen and now there are many memes and negativity surrounding the name. [36:51] - There are quite a few businesses out there that accidentally get sucked into the news because of their names when they really have no connection. Chris calls this name collision. [38:39] - There is a cost with fixing a damaged reputation and sometimes it is less costly to change names and move on. [39:47] - Chris has worked cases with restaurant chains that has actually resulted in some policy change within the companies. [42:32] - It is better to get ahead of the curve if you can. [43:40] - It is good to go ahead and claim your name for a personal webpage and on social media in case you ever need it. Prepare and protect your reputation upfront instead of fixing it later on. Canadians are camping on the couch like everyone else during the pandemic. Working from home is the new reality, like it is around the world. That's one reason we're seeing a dramatic acceleration in Canadian enterprises turning to the cloud. This acceleration comes on top of 30% year-over-year growth that we've been witnessing for the past five years. Canadians have seen the difference that the cloud contact center solutions can deliver to their businesses. And they realize that if you can't communicate with customers the way that they prefer to be communicated with, you're really going to struggle in the market. On a recent episode of That’s Genius!, I sat down with Chris Silver, Five 9's vice president for Canada, who shared his thoughts about: What's driving Canadian enterprises to adopt cloud technology How the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting Canadians' transition to the cloud What the post-pandemic trends will look like in the Canadian marketplace Listen to this and all our other That’s Genius! episodes with Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or our website.
In April’s episode of Discourse!, Chris Cotter, Chris Silver and Susannah Finver place the current global situation relating to coronavirus front and centre in their discussion.
Retail is a combination of online, mobile, and in-person experiences, but they aren't discrete channels anymore – they are all pieces of the customer experience, and every customer engages with brands through a unique combination of these experiences. A big challenge for retailers, then, is facilitating the seamless journey through this channel-less world. So, in this episode, we sit down with Chris Silver, Director of Global Retail Strategy and International for URBN, which includes the brands Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People, to learn about the technology and experiences that keep customers engaged. Beyond the Noise with David Jamieson is a weekly podcast with CommonSpace journalist David Jamieson, where he gets behind the 24/7 outrage-driven social media news circus and gets to heart of issues, trying to find the substance behind the headlines. THIS week, Jamieson is joined by Chris Silver, Scottish writer who is working with DesmogUK to produce a survey of Scottish attitudes to climate change and 'Just Transition' - the idea that the move to sustainable economy and society must not hurt ordinary people. Among other things they discuss: - 1:14 What is a 'Just Transition' and how does it relate to Scotland's economy and society? - 8:27 Many Scots are rightly annoyed that the discovery of natural resources in Scotland wasn't used to the people's benefit - but is this the norm for energy production and use under capitalism? - 21:40 Why Grangemouth and Jim Ratcliff represent the power of the energy industry over Scotland. - 28:30 What do the 'Yellow Vests' movement in France tell us about the nature of class conflict under the pressure of climate crisis?
Chris Silver was diagnosed with melanoma in July 2016 when a couple of irregular skin bumps brought him into his doctor's office. He underwent surgery to remove the bumps. When Chris woke up, his doctor informed him that he had melanoma and he had already made an appointment for him to see Dr. Beth Buchbinder, a melanoma specialist at Dana-Farber.Chris began treatment at Dana-Farber with a new class of drugs called checkpoint inhibitors or immunotherapy agents – a type of treatment that activate the body's immune system to attack the cancer. Immunotherapy is helping many cancer patients, but especially those patients with melanoma, to achieve durable remissions that even 5 years ago were not possible. Much of the research that led to the development of these lifesaving drugs were done by scientists at Dana-Farber. In December, Chris' wife Melissa was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, Melissa's cancer was caught early and today she is cancer free. Chris is doing well himself aside for some from some fatigue. Chris is back to work and when he's not on the job or fighting cancer, he enjoys camping, kayaking, and hiking.Dr. Buchbinder can talk about how Dana-Farber is leading the way in immunotherapy agents, called checkpoint inhibitors, which take the breaks off the body's immune system so that it can recognize and fight the cancer. Immunotherapy is exactly the type of groundbreaking therapy that Dana-Farber works to advance, and which has produced dramatic remissions in patients that had previously untreatable disease.

World affairs are getting so scary, so baffling, that people are grasping for historical parallels. Is it the 1930s all over again? The cataclysmic 1970s or Thatcher / Reagan 1980s? Where are the parallels to tumultuous votes that result in the UK choosing to leave Europe, or – gulp! – President-elect Trump? This week’s podcast host Maurice Smith put those questions and more to guest commentators Zara Kitson of the Scottish Greens, and our regular contributor Chris Silver. Both “millennials” and Yes voters in the Scottish referendum, they consider what it all means at local and Scottish level. What do people want? If communities feel excluded, what attracts them to future political solutions. Have the SNP got the answers, or is it much more complicated than that? The result offers a refreshing insight into what is going on in Scottish politics, and where it might be leading.
Eric Joyce, once one of the rising stars of an ascendant Labour Party, could be a man haunted by his own failings and his remarkable fall from grace and departure from politics after a serious of drink related incidents. Eric Joyce , a former Army officer and MP for Falkirk West for 15 years, has been rebuilding his life after a long-expected exit from parliament last year. His time of reflection, and the Brexit vote, has led to a developing support for an independent Scotland. The former MP visited the Newsnet studios to meet podcast host Derek Bateman for a free ranging discussion of Brexit and Scottish independence, covering issues such as the future structure of the military, the role of Scotland as a continuing EU member, and the “new norm” that favours independence over other constitutional solutions. He points out: “I literally do not know any of my friends who don’t think that Scotland should be looking very seriously at independence, and most of them are Labour people. People in England are thinking why should Scotland want to go along with a Brexit under the Tories, when they could stay in Europe?” He believes an independence referendum must happen before Theresa May presents a fait accompli to the electorate in 2020. Joyce described Labour in Scotland as “headless chickens” and believes leader Kezia Dugdale has taken on the job too soon. Independence for Scotland. We are certainly talking about it, but is anybody doing any proper planning about how Scotland gets there? Robin McAlpine, head of the independence leaning think-tank Common Weal, is challenging the constituent parts of the Yes campaign to think carefully about how it lifts support for independence into the majority, He doesn’t believe that UK Brexit vote is enough to convince enough Scots to back a breakaway, even though a clear majority backed remaining in the European Union. He has produced a book, Determination, setting out his argument for a thoroughly thought-out and meaningful campaign for Scottish independence. Here he discussed his ideas with podcast host Derek Bateman. What follows is a fascinating discussion. “We cannot keep saying to people the same things as last time, and expect a different result,” argues Robin. “The people who will win the next referendum will look pretty much like the people who voted Yes last time around.” Robin argues that defeat in 2014 has not been followed by a proper political “autopsy”, because of the massive growth of the SNP and the fact that Scotland hurtled quickly into the 2015 UK and 2016 election campaigns. Where next for the Scottish media? And what exactly is it anyway? We invited a group of people from the industry into the studio to discuss the type of media Scotland needs, and what is being done to achieve it. We chose a recent book – Christopher Silver’s Demanding Democracy: The Case for a Scottish Media* – as the basis for an informed discussion about Scotland’s traditional, “mainstream”, media and its newer digital counterparts. Our guests Angela Haggerty, Kevin McKenna and Christopher Silver himself joined journalist and producer Maurice Smith in a conversation that travelled all the way from life in traditional and digital newsrooms to the Daily Mail, Leveson Inquiry and the Wee Ginger Dug. Our group are all media practitioners in various guises. Angela is editor of Common Space and a Sunday Herald columnist, and Kevin is a regular contributor to The Herald, Observer and The National. Combined with Christopher’s writing experience and Maurice’s career in newspapers and broadcasting, the group’s experience spans decades of journalism in Scotland – decades that have witnessed massive change in politics and the media. The main thrust of Demanding Democracy is that Scotland needs a stronger media that is more appropriate to the needs of modern society. It covers the relative decline of the newspaper industry, the growth of digital for both mainstream and “new” media, and different models including Scandinavia, where larger media are obliged to effectively cross-subsidise smaller concerns. Our group examines the current media landscape, how it may develop and what should happen next, including the BBC, new media and existing newspapers. It’s a fascinating listen, so click on the audio file above, or download from your usual sources. * Demanding Democracy; Christopher Silver; See www.word-power.co.uk Newsnet.scot podcasts are professionally made to enhance your listening experience. The murder of Labour MP Jo Cox last Thursday has raised many issues relating to the tone of political debate and the role of politicians in society. This week’s podcast – recorded shortly after the event and the initial public reaction – considers the fall-out from the shocking turn of events during a campaign that has been notable for its vicious exchanges in the media and out on the campaign trail. Two of Newsnet’s regular commentators – blogger James Kelly of ScotGoesPop and writer Christopher Silver – joined Newsnet Radio podcast host Derek Bateman in the wake of the Cox murder and before the appearance in court of the man arrested soon afterwards by West Yorkshire police. Newsnet Radio podcasts continue thanks to your subscriptions. If you can support them, and our news analysis service, please subscribe whatever you can afford.
So everybody lost and everybody won, as is usually claimed in the aftermath of every poll. Our team of experts gathered at the Newsnet Radio studio after very little sleep to share their views of winners, losers, uppers and downers with host Derek Bateman. The big loser, of course was Labour. Under leader Kezia Dugdale, the party slumped to third place in the polls. The SNP won an unprecedented third term, but leader Nicola Sturgeon was narrowly denied an overall majority, which means her administration will have to do deals with other parties to get key decisions approved at Holyrood over the coming five years. The Greens progressed, although not as far as they had hoped, as all those SNP second votes piled up, not only to their benefit but also that of the Tories, who shocked most observers by reaching a clear second place. What does it all mean for the governance of Scotland, for each party and even for the UK? Scottish politics continues to deliver surprises and it really does seem to soon to say what any of this means for the cause of Scottish independence. Thanks to everyone who contributed to supporting our election campaign coverage, and especially the podcasts. We are delighted to confirm that we will be able to carry on the programme beyond the Scottish election campaign, and on to the European referendum on June 23. By day, Chris Silver works for a Jewish task force trying to raise awareness about civic inequalities facing Israel’s Arab citizens. But he dedicates his free time to Jews in an Arab land, with his blog, Jewish Morocco. Silver created the blog in 2008, while traveling in Morocco, as a way of sharing the stories, photographs, and other artifacts he was collecting to document what Jewish life there had been like in its heyday. Along the way, he developed a particular interest in the country’s Jewish musicians and singers—characters who were beloved by Moroccans of all backgrounds, and to whom he gives ample space on his blog. Silver joins Vox Tablet host Sara Ivry to talk about some of the unique voices he’s discovered, what happened to Jewish Moroccan singers once they left the country in the 1950s and ’60s, and where he gets his missionary zeal (hint: It has to do with Bob Dylan; Mama Cass; Bill Cosby; and Chris’s dad, Roy)....
