Luka Garza at the University of Iowa was a First Team All-American, the John R. Wooden National Player of the Year in 2021, and was arguably one of the best college basketball players of all time. The 6'10 center is now in the NBA playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, but realized there was still an opportunity to maximize his efforts in college through blockchain technology. While Luka just missed the NIL era, he knew it was coming and started Luka Garza NFT Group, which had the goal in mind for athletes to monetize their NIL with any institutional involvement. https://lnkd.in/g-3BBXtb While he's put the project aside (for now), the reemergence of stable coins with the ETHDenver in full swing prompts the discussion... what's it going to take for Web3 to achieve mainstream adoption, including the sports world? It's time to meet our 5th #Web3 #NFT guest on STIMY!Mai Akiyoshi is a Silicon Valley engineer from Japan who has had a rather unconventional route littered with what one might conventionally consider to be “failures”.And it all began… with Mai applying for a sales position at a Japanese company. The company decided unilaterally that they would train her up as a software engineer instead and it proved to be really difficult. She was consistently at the bottom of her cohort, but still made it through the training and… got into the most technically demanding department of the company, where she was treated like an alien!Mai then got into a startup by accident - applying for a position she had no prior qualifications in, and even tried to rescind her application! That position eventually led her to the States, where she met Ben Yu (her co-founder & partner) through Nuseir of Nasdaily/Nas Academy and where her Web3 journey began. Now, Mai is the CEO and co-founder of Curious Addys, a Web3 startup building the best educational platform and community for newcomers to Web3 while celebrating ADHD. Why NFTs are a scame outside of the context of the creator economy...  Yes there are haters and those that throw stones at the NFT industry without doing their research but we have to be honest with ourselves and understand where that hate and bad experience is coming from.   I know for many of us who love this NFT community we want to do what we can to reach mass adoption and we want to drag our friends and family into the space.  But I don't think we can or should do that.   What we can do, is focus on sharing our experiences with the goal of shifting others perspectives of this space.   The best way to do that IMHO is to ask the question:  Where in the digital world do you feel the concept of "rising tide lifts all ships" exists today? If you don't believe that does exist we must ask others do you want to be a part of a community that is filled with your people and as that community becomes more successful and the value provide increases so does your value as a supporter?   I believe NFTs can feel like a scam without the context of the Creator Economy which if done correctly creates an environment that truly provides... Cyber Security Inside

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 24, 2022 22:35

In this episode of Cyber Security Inside What That Means, Camille continues her conversation on non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with Mic Bowman, Senior Principal Engineer at Intel. This second part of the conversation covers: - Why NFTs exist and some thoughts on why we are creating scarcity in the digital world. -  Where NFTs might be headed, such as in the direction of patents and software. -  How NFTs could allow people who collect data to get that information to people who need the data. -  How privacy and ethics play a role in NFTs and the passing of digital data. ...and more. Don't miss it!   The views and opinions expressed are those of the guests and author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Intel Corporation. Here are some key takeaways: -  One way an NFT could work is that you build a model that you can use as a plug in or something in your own software. And someone else can use it in their software, but they don't own the NFT so they can't see how the software is built. It gives us new ways to define what ownership is. -  It could be possible to code an NFT such that you don't only own the art, but also the copyright. It becomes a licensed art piece. Some have discussed using NFTs in patents. -  Right now there are copyright laws in simple media. But as we extend the idea of NFTs into patents and other industries, we don't know what ownership of the NFTs actually conveys. There will need to be some serious legal discussions, and it isn't well-defined yet. -  We currently have sensors collecting all kinds of data that would be useful to people. But getting that data to an open market of people who might find it valuable is really difficult and not cost effective right now. If we can connect the data makers with those who want the data in an open market, we can collect and publish things we couldn't have before. An example of this is an existing vineyard who already collects soil data and climate data for optimizing growing now has a way to get that information to someone wanting to start a new field. -  YouTube is a good analogy for NFTs. YouTube gives someone who knows something or can do something well an opportunity to monetize that skill through advertisements or subscriptions. Right now, when data is collected, there is no way to monetize that or get value on that information. If there were, like NFTs, we might see people collecting and sharing more information. Of course, one danger of this is ensuring that the data is being used appropriately, which is still very much an open question. -  How do you protect the asset that goes along with NFTs? Let's say I have a model that I have trained using machine learning and confidential information. When I give you the right to use the model, I don't give you the right to see the data that went into training it. But how do I stop you from copying this asset and selling it independently? -  We know how to trade NFTs, but what we aren't great at yet is updating the NFT as we trade physical things. Syncing those two things is difficult unless you build it that way from the beginning. -  Partial ownership of NFTs is interesting. You can't own part of an image, like a slice of pixels, but if you are purchasing it for investment and resale, partial ownership makes a lot of sense.  -  Why create digital scarcity when anything digital can be reproduced? Why is scarcity valuable? It makes things collectible. The whole point is that we can own something that nobody else does, and defining the value of owning that thing. You can own a digital print of a Monet, but it isn't the original Monet. And for somebody, it is worth the money to own that collectible.   Some interesting quotes from today's episode: “There was one company that was talking about taking all of their patents, creating NFTs for the patents, and ownership of the NFT would convey certain rights to use the intellectual property that was part of the patent.” - Mic Bowman on where NFTs might be headed   “The asset is a separate thing out there, the picture. I may try to resell the picture, even though the NFT doesn't necessarily give me the rights to do that. And honestly that distinction between the two and sort of these open market may be the biggest barrier in extending NFTs out into new assets.” - Mic Bowman   “In some sense this is the most exciting and most speculative kind of aspect and usage for NFTs is can we really start to monetize data?” - Mic Bowman   “It's terrifying, actually. The biggest barrier for me on the technical side is how do we make it possible to do this monetization of data and preserve the appropriate use of that data?” - Mic Bowman on needing also pay attention to ethics and privacy when talking about NFTs   “Are there ways that we can protect the intellectual property and those assets to create digital scarcity and to protect the assets more rigidly than we currently have?” - Mic Bowman   “The digital print may look just as good on my wall, but it's not a Monet. It's not the original Monet. The print on my wall is worth $25 bucks. The Monet, the painting Waterfront just sold at Christie's for what, $60 million or some ridiculously high number. It's worth that much to somebody. Is it worth it because they are a collector? Is it worth it because they value seeing the paintbrush strokes on the Monet? I don't know.” - Mic Bowman

What do web development, Twitch, VR, and blockchain all have in common? More than you might think. After years as a game developer, Ship Shape's longest-tenured employee Rob Cary was bound to put those unlikely virtual dots together and today he's here to share a few original insights.  After meeting Robbie Wagner in an elementary school play as a couple of accountants, their lives continued to overlap. From a choice in college to a knack for web development, making sweet beats, and ultimately, their careers, an intro to Rob may sound identical to an intro to Robbie. But unlike Robbie Wagner, Rob Cary has years of VR experience under his belt. Not to mention, some interesting ideas about the future of our virtual metaverse.  In this episode, Robbie, Chuck, and Rob discuss the wonders of WebStorm and IntelliJ, what on earth decentralized gaming is, how VR has transformed the gaming world, and the mostly unknown link between Twitch and web development.  Key Takeaways [00:28] - Introduction to Rob. [01:27] - A whiskey review.  [06:57] - Rob, Robbie, or both?  [13:05] - Rob's technical background and the state of decentralized gaming. [16:12] - A game of Stumped. [24:50] - What Rob likes about WebStorm and IntelliJ. [30:16] - A conversation about the VR universe, how it's transformed, and where we're headed.   [39:10] - Why NFTs are everywhere.  [43:20] - Rob's hobbies outside of gaming and websites.  Quotes [26:35] - “VS Code is one of the few examples I've seen of an IDE that's really universally been adopted really quickly.” ~ @r0bc4ry [34:50] - “Some of the things you can do on VR, you could just never do in a traditional game. In Episode 7 of Probably Nothing TZ (@TZhongg) and Alexis (@alexisohanian) chat with Betty (@betty_nft), co-founder and “Horde Mother” of Deadfellaz NFT collection. Deadfellaz is an NFT project consisting of 10,000 “undead NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain.” In this episode, Betty shares how she assessed the risk of launching an NFT project, how we can continue to break down barriers in web3, and why building an anonymous team is the future.- Links and References Mentioned in This Episode - Boiz (@BOIZ_COLLECTION) Boss Beauties (@BossBeautiesNFT) CryptoStacys (@cryptostacys) clevergirls (@CleverGirlsNFT) raptorcity (@raptorcitynft) Goosebumps Galactic Agency (@GSA_nft) Boring Bananas (@BoringBananasCo) Crypto Covens (@crypto_coven) Cool Cats (@coolcatsnft) - Timestamps -1:35: Betty's superhero origin story8:13: Why is Betty “anonymous”?12:02: How can we continue to take down barriers for marginalized communities in web3?14:26: Betty's Favorite women based artists/projects18:00: Why NFTs are the way that the average person can be an early-stage investor24:10: How does Betty manage her time?27:23: Betty's advice for future NFT projects34:44: What is it like to work with an anonymous team?39:21: What's your desert island NFT?- Mentions - Psych (@psych_nft) Lirona (@iamlirona) Priyanka (@priyankap_patel) Amy Woodward (@amy__woodward) fatbaby (@NftFat) India (@indiaweston) Leon Lee (@leoneeart) - Highlights -*How Betty got into NFT's*When Betty first heard about NFTs, she got excited but was scared to engage  Like many people, Betty spent time absorbing and learning as much as she could about the space. Her “professional” work was in the corporate creative productive industry so she understood the art side of NFTs right away. Betty's husband, Psych, was the one who jumped right into NFTs and after seeing all of the projects the Psych was working on, Betty was hooked. “I was like, I mean, we've worked in creative production together on a corporate level for really amazing brands for years, so the production side of it is something that we do anyway. And having been involved in the communities and things I was like, let's just do our own (NFT).”“The idea for Deadfellaz just came really organically. We love horror, and we had been discussing like the fascination with zombies across pop culture and how it brings so many people together and I think that people love spooky stuff.”*Why Deadfellaz had to succeed*Betty and Pysch's backs were against the wall“And it was like, you know, we either throw ourselves into this and it works or it doesn't work and so though that was like the fire, obviously, we have three children, it had to work. And the more we just sat down, it was like, it is going to be amazing.” NFTs give anyone a chance to make a name for themselves, no matter what situation they find themselves in. Even though the “real world” was slowly falling apart around Betty and her family between the Australia fires and COVID, they found their community online and have built an amazing project around it. *Anonymity and Pseudonyms may be the future* Betty considers herself semi doxxed. She has always been called Betty by all of her friends, but it is technically not her legal name. She chose to be anonymous because she wanted to separate her corporate persona from her online one as some corporate clients can be confused between the two. But what most people don't realize is the safety of building a brand behind a pseudonym. Betty and Psych have 3 kids. as they moved into a space where there is a potential of a lot of money, they wanted to protect their family as much as possible. “It's like the second identity, this alter ego that they can't have their colleagues or clients knowing about. And I'm seeing this happen more and more as people want to spend more time in web3.” And on top of all of this, anonymity allows the ability to eliminate (or strengthen) potential biases and take down barriers that are prevalent in web2. Examples of these potential barriers are women entering male-dominated industries, the BIPOC community, LGBTQ+, etc. Betty is one of the thought leaders in this space and wants to make sure that the same issues in web2 don't make it into web3. “We all have that responsibility, it shouldn't just be me and a handful of other women and gender diverse people and people of color and indigenous people fighting for themselves, it needs to be everyone.”*Investing in NFTs is like early-stage investing*Alexis: “I look at these projects, and it's the vibes of the creators. It's their intention, their thoughtfulness, certainly the art and the thoughtfulness of the product. But then it's the community and who here has the sort of minimum viable community to do something that I think will be special in 10 years, not in two months, or 10 hours, but a decade?” If you want to be an accredited investor in private markets, currently you have to either have a gross income exceeding $200,000 in each of the two most recent years or joint income with a spouse or partner exceeding $300,000 for those years. This law creates barriers that don't allow most individuals to participate in private investing. But NFTs break these barriers down because like for Deadfellaz, all you needed to get involved in the project was .025ETH and hit mint before it sold out. *Building a team in web3* As of recording, the Deadfellaz team was at 26 members including 3D artists, copywriters, project managers, narrative designers, Decentraland developers, and more. Most of this team is anonymous and Betty believes that she may never even see some of her mods even though she's worked extremely close with them since the beginning of the project. “The trust is there from the work that people have produced and the validation of their association with other people, like our Decentraland team, we've never met them. We've never seen them.” But how do you pay anonymous people? Betty has the information for about 70% of the people on her team, but the rest are just usernames and wallets. Most teams and corporations aren't ready to embrace certain aspects of web3 culture like paying anonymous people, but this may be one of the key reasons for Deadfellaz success... with fewer barriers comes better talent that allows Betty and her team to build better and faster than other projects. “I think that leaning into those web3 quirks, part of what's gonna bring longevity for our projects because we really trust in the world that we're building in. We're not building a web2 brand, and slapping a web3 label on it like we are intrinsically web3.”*Betty's goals for Deadfellaz in 5 years?* Betty wants Deadfellaz's original holders to be empowered and have their lives changed. Deadfellaz will become a household name that is cemented in pop culture. “Sometimes I wake up and I'm like, “am I dreaming? What's going on?” You know, I check my Twitter, DMs, and emails. And it's just, it's craziness to me what's going on, but it's real life. It's happening. So yeah, just along for the ride.”“I'm going to keep pushing as hard as I can because I think that really special things will happen if we do.”*If you were stranded on an island what NFT would you bring?* Since Betty is bringing herself, she will be bringing her Deadfellaz pfp by default and choose to bring Psych's Deadfellaz pfp with her for company. But she did consider bringing her cool cat. “Oh my god. I love my Cool Cat too. I was actually just looking at cool cats before like, I need to buy another Cool Cat”

In today's episode, Tommy talks with Reagan Cook, Tax and Accounting specialist for crypto and digital assets at TaxBit. Digital assets have grown in popularity and momentum in today's world, with Bitcoin and Ethereum being the most popular cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrency is the new economic norm. It offers a new financial system that is decentralized. Although it can be used to buy goods, crypto has so much more potential than just being another form of currency. Tommy talks with Reagan about digital assets, the top cryptocurrencies used in the digital market today, and how crypto works in the virtual world. Key Takeaways [02:35] - What are digital assets? [07:05] - How are cryptocurrencies protected against money laundering or other crime? [09:36] - What is blockchain technology? [12:58] - How digital wallets work. [14:05] - The top cryptocurrencies on the digital market. [17:21] - What NFTs are and how they work. [21:53] - Why NFTs are becoming a hit in the digital asset space. [28:46] - The concept of the metaverse. Quotes [02:37] - "Cryptocurrency is one of the most common forms of digital assets. Think of it as a token that you can purchase on specific exchanges and pay for other goods and services with." - Reagan Cook [09:37] - "Let's think of blockchain as a completely digital ledger. Let's think of computers across the entire globe constantly recording. Every time there's a transaction, a unique ID on that blockchain network is generated, which means that every transaction that occurs is correct and uniquely identified and stored on this blockchain network." - Reagan Cook [15:20] - "The digital asset space, in general, what makes it unique is that it is demand-driven. Right now, these cryptocurrencies are extremely volatile and the demand is driven on the actual application of that cryptocurrency." - Reagan Cook [17:47] - "NFT stands for non-fungible token. It represents images that we're seeing online that are selling for millions of dollars. NFT is not just a picture. It is anything from the virtual world, virtual clothing, photos, and music. This is all being monetized through the use of cryptocurrency." - Reagan Cook Links  Reagan Cook on LinkedIn TaxBit Bitcoin Ethereum OpenSea Discord Tim Tebow The Sims Ralph Lauren Zepeto Markets Daily Crypto Roundup Podcast Coinbase Bytes Connect with our hosts Mammoth Tommy on LinkedIn Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts Learn more about Mammoth Scientific's Health & Tech Fund 1 When you move beyond the point of making sure your retirement goals are on track, your investment opportunities are wider than just publicly traded funds. Kent Dodds spends much of his professional life helping emerging developers learn. Earlier this year, as he began refreshing a stack of educational resources, Kent realized that simply switching to Remix eliminated most of the problems he was teaching his students to avoid or solve. Not long after he fell in love with the framework, Kent landed a job at Remix.  Now the Director of Developer Experience, Dodds educates and troubleshoots. From eliminating loading and error states, easy adoption, and the mutations API, Dodds' passion for Remix is abundantly obvious. He credits the success of Remix to its premium user experience and believes wholeheartedly that (almost) everything is simpler without JavaScript.  In this episode, Robbie, Chuck, and Kent discuss the standalone features of Remix, a new stack on the Remix block, avoiding JavaScript, and why Kent can't code without Tailwind.  Key Takeaways [01:51] - An eggnog review.  [06:20] - Kent's journey to Remix.  [09:13] - What makes Remix unique. [13:13] - Remix's true niche.  [16:51] - Remix vs. Astro vs. Qwik. [21:21] - What you can't do with Remix.  [22:14] - Why working around JavaScript is the way to go. [26:15] - More ways that Remix improves the user experience.  [27:44] - The beauty of Tailwind.  [36:56] - Remix's mutations API.  [41:51] - Kent and Tesla.  [50:25] - What Kent likes outside of coding and clean energy. [53:51] - Why NFTs are a scam.  Quotes [09:57] - “Right now [Remix] is all server-rendered. And we do that because we feel like that provides the best user experience. It objectively provides the best user experience. It's way better to just see your stuff than to see spinners while you're waiting for your stuff. So if you can just make it so fast that you don't need spinners, then that's a better user experience.” ~ @kentcdodds [15:40] - “I haven't yet found a use-case for building on the web that Remix isn't really well-suited for. It doesn't have a bunch of abstractions useful for someone who's going to build a game, but neither does any other framework like Remix. It sure has a lot of useful things for you if you want to build an excellent user experience on the web.” ~ @kentcdodds [22:30] - “I feel like with Remix, we've found another way to make things faster without having to make all these trade-offs on different architectures with having to completely change the framework that you're using.” ~ @kentcdodds Links Kent C. The information on this podcast & website is for general information only; it should not be taken as constituting professional advice from the website owner. Please seek expert financial advice before making an investment.According to a recent article in The Economist, crypto currencies and other digital assets are worth over $2 trillion dollars. To put that into perspective, the global gold market is estimated to be worth $10tr. The value of transactions that one of the most popular crypto platforms, Ethereum, reached $2.5trn in Q2 this year, around the same sum as Visa Card processes. And there is a new explosive trend that is adding even more to the value of the market – Non Fungible Tokens – or NFT's –An NFT is a digital asset that represents a real-world object like a piece of art or music. They are bought and sold online and stored on blockchain platforms. NFTs are like physical collector's items, only digital. So instead of getting an actual oil painting to hang on the wall, the buyer gets a digital file instead. NFTs are gaining traction because they are a great way to buy and sell digital artwork. For example, in March this year auction house Christie's sold a jpg from digital artist Beeple for $69m – the third largest sum paid for a piece of art produced by a living artist. In June this year, another auction house, Sotherby's sold a crypto punk for $11.7m. This is a pixelated image of a punk that was given away free of charge as part of an experiment on the Ethereum blockchain in 2017. This is an image you can locate on google images and right click on your mouse and save the same image to your computer The largest NFT marketplace, Open Sea, has seen an explosion is sales with over $3.4bn in August 2021 (compared to $6.2m the previous August).      There are some amazing numbers on the value of digital assets, and the growth is exceptional. So what's going on why are we seeing this massive growth and adoption? Why NFTs matter (ownership can be easily identified; rights established, assets traded etc)Why does the art world (& media) love NFTs? Recurring royalty structures for NFTsWhy will brands like Taco Bell use NFTs? (Loyalty schemes)How will sectors like gaming be transformed by NFTs?How do I buy and sell NFTs? (Tim's suggestions; Opensea, Metamask)Is DeFi a replacement of traditional banking? So what are NFT's – in plain English? and why are they so important?in practical terms who will use NFT's ? NFTs are the cool new thing in the art world at the moment, and we can probably all agree that they are here to stay. My guest is very enthusiastic about them, yet prudent. Yuri Cataldo is Co-Founder and General Partner of Athenian Venture Capital and Co-Author of the blockchain book “Be Left Behind”. But before he got into all of this, Yuri was first classically trained in theatre as a set & costume designer. He worked on Broadway and later became an entrepreneur, starting multiple ventures. He became involved with cryptocurrency when a business he worked with started accepting it as payment, and then became an expert in that field when he wrote a book on the topic. In this episode, Yuri explains at length what NFTs are (and aren't) with clear explanations and examples. Conversation Highlights: What NFTs are and are not. Why NFTs are both amazing and garbage. Why artists should learn more about NFTs. What the pros and cons of NFTs are PLUS: Don't forget the taxes!
