Christine Short and Zach Warring cover retailer earnings. Christine thinks the “cautious consumer” is one of retail's biggest headwinds as 2Q shows beats despite tariffs. She notes that value is leading, expecting lower-priced namesake brands like Abercrombie (ANF) or Urban Outfitters (URBN) to see strength there. Zach has a Strong Buy rating on ANF, but has a Sell rating on Kohl's (KSS) over valuation. He also likes TJX (TJX), which is “obviously gaining market share,” and Ross Stores (ROST).======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Urban Outfitters released their earnings report for the last quarter on May 21, 2024. On the earnings call, CEO Richard Hayne shared with investors that the new senior team has started implementing significant operational changes in the North American market. These adjustments include enhancing the brand's read and react processes to leverage their speed-to-market capabilities, reducing prices in various categories such as women's accessories and home goods, and revamping their marketing strategy with increased and more targeted investments in social media. Reflecting on the digital growth, Hayne noted: "We said we were having a positive digital growth on consumers, new consumers to the brand, which felt like a momentum forward from our Q1 execution. So that, us getting back our customer, Katie is what it's all about."Under Hayne's leadership, the Q1 2025 report reveals an impressive performance, with an 8% growth in total sales, setting a new record of $1.2 billion for the first quarter. Four out of the five key brands—Anthropologie, Free People, FP Movement, and Nuuly—have achieved double-digit revenue growth, with three of them posting record operating income.Brand-Specific Achievements- Anthropologie: This brand has shown a 10% retail segment comparable store sales (comp) growth, contributing to an 11% total revenue increase.- Free People: Demonstrating robust growth, Free People has produced a 17% retail segment comp gain, while its sub-brand FP Movement has achieved an impressive 25% retail segment comp growth. - Nuuly: The Nuuly segment has experienced a tremendous 56% increase in subscribers, crossing the milestone of 244,000 active subscribers.Challenges with the Urban Outfitters BrandDespite the overall positive performance, the Urban Outfitters brand has faced a 14% decline in retail segment comp. To counter these challenges, a new leadership team has been introduced in North America, focusing on revising operations, pricing, and marketing strategies. Initial signs indicate a slight improvement in performance metrics for Urban Outfitters in North America.Strengthening Customer Health Hayne noted that the customer base across the brands remains strong, with good job security and rising incomes outpacing inflation. This has led to more considered purchases, which is a sign of healthier and more sustainable consumer sentiment.Strategic Initiatives and Future Projections1. Focus on Revamping the Urban Outfitters Brand:- The primary strategy revolves around restoring profitability by eliminating slow-moving inventory, particularly in women's and men's apparel, adjusting pricing architecture, and enhancing marketing efforts. The company expects gradual improvements in comp sales throughout the year, with a significant focus on the back-to-school and holiday seasons.2. Revenue and Margin Growth: - For Q2, Urban Outfitters anticipates mid-single-digit growth in total company sales, driven by low single-digit retail segment comp growth and continued robust expansion of the Nuuly segment. Despite expected markdowns at Urban Outfitters, overall gross margins for the fiscal year are projected to increase by approximately 50-100 basis points, supported by better initial product margins at Anthropologie and Free People and improved inventory management.3. Efficient Inventory Management and SG&A Alignment:- The company's strategy emphasizes maintaining optimal inventory levels and improving inventory turns. Expected growth in selling, general, and administrative expenses (SG&A) will align more closely with sales growth in the latter half of the year.4. Expansion through New Store Openings:- The fiscal year '25 plans include opening 57 new stores while closing 21, with significant growth being driven by FP Movement, Free People, and Anthropologie. 5. Nuuly Subscription Service Growth:- Nuuly has added over 50,000 new subscribers in the last quarter, bringing the total to over 244,000 active subscribers. The segment is anticipated to be profitable on a full-year basis, further driving significant growth. This is a public episode. Sometimes, it's the most fun to chop it up with friends. And when your friends include legendary sushi chefs and top DJs, all the better. This week we brought to Happy Half Hour Chris Cantore, a former voice across San Diego's radio airwaves, and his long-time buddy, North County sushi chef Tyler Mars. Troy goes way back with the duo, having been both a music and food journalist during his career. The pair just launched Needlefish, an omakase and record-spinning pop-up that they plan to take around San Diego, and hope to one day make a brick-and-mortar location. In fact, they held their first event for SDM staff just a few weeks ago to rave reviews. The idea is simple: fresh fish and good tunes, vinyl-only. Cantore says he likes to bring back the classics, like 90's hip-hop, punk, and stoner rock like Queens of the Stone Age. Tyler pairs that with his own sliced fish creations, served on warm vinegared rice and usually in combination with other condiments and ingredients you haven't experienced eating sushi before (think thin-sliced prime rib eye and chimichurri, for a non-fish example). Though Needlefish is new, the duo's idea is not. They both wanted to open up a spot together 25 years ago. But they were scared, and life happened. So did kids, and marriages, and careers, and the transitions of said careers, and Mars' eventual cancer diagnosis. The latter came in 2021 but Mars is now in remission. “It's really because of what happened to Tyler that we finally had the courage to pull the trigger on this,” Cantore says. “We realized that life is short, and you don't know how much time you have left. You have to do what you love to do, and this is what we love to do.” Stay tuned to our pages to find out more about where these guys will be popping up and when. Follow them on @needlefishco on Instagram for the latest updates. We also chat other food news around town including our Best Restaurants issue! Mission Hills' jewel Wolf in the Woods took home the top prize of Best Restaurant, while North County brunch temple Atelier Manna won Best New Restaurant. Check out all the other critics' and readers' picks here. Basic Pizza is also closing its doors, which opened in 2006, when Petco Park was just two years old. It's moving to the other side of the park, though, so fret not (and, also, it's the same owner as all the URBN restaurants with similar menus). And, finally, beloved LA Japanese chain Katsuya is coming to UTC with Katsuya Ko, which offers more of an izakaya-style menu geared towards younger consumers.

Urban Outfitters's Q4 2023 earnings call, unedited
In the recent Earnings Call held on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024, Urban Outfitters offered an in-depth look into the company's performance. CEO Richard Hayne shared insights, stating: "I'm optimistic about their prospects for this year, we believe each of these brands can continue to post healthy comps, albeit at a somewhat lower rate than last year." The company reported confirmed growth in various sectors, including total sales, gross profit, operating income, and earnings. The Nuuly segment, in particular, demonstrated notable revenue strength. Brands like Anthropologie, Free People, FP Movement, and Nuuly reported positive performances, providing evidence of the efficacy of strategic changes. This includes updates to product assortments and selling environments, which supported double-digit sales growth and record revenue. These results substantially contributed to the overall improvement of Urban Outfitters. While the company experienced progress in certain areas, the Earnings Call also highlighted potential difficulties. The Urban Outfitters brand in North America and Europe reported negative comparative sales, resulting from excess inventory and increased markdowns. On this matter, CEO Richard Hayne stated, “[We believe] each of these brands can continue to post healthy comps, albeit at a somewhat lower rate than last year." To mitigate these impacts, the company plans to introduce new leadership and augment inventory control measures, providing a blueprint for improved comparative sales. Regarding future plans, Urban Outfitters' executives outlined their intention to revitalize the brand in North America through a comprehensive brand review. Furthermore, they aim to expand their retail presence with new stores for the successful brands while committing to the growth of the Nuuly rental business. Their strategy also includes a commitment to share buyback, presenting a balanced approach that combines both diversification and expansion. In summary, the Earnings Call expressed a company acknowledged with its challenges while simultaneously implementing strategies to navigate them. As stated during the call, there is financial growth and a future investment plan in place. However, it should be noted that the success of these efforts ultimately hinges on their execution. With new leadership and a focus on brand revitalization and expansion, Urban Outfitters appears poised for additional growth while managing current challenges. Nonetheless, it is crucial that the company makes prudent decisions moving forward, considering existing market conditions. Urban Outfitters, Inc. recently shared its earnings report, and during the earnings call, CEO Richard A. Hayne outlined the firm's three main strategic priorities. These are: curating a diverse range of products from well-known and emerging brands, escalating the appeal of their self-created products, and strengthening ties with customers in response to their unique location-based preferences. These goals provide valuable insights into the company's future direction. We will discuss four main points that were highlighted during the call: Urban Outfitters showed a robust overall performance. Notably, three of their major brands - Free People, FP Movement, and Anthropologie presented impressive results throughout the third quarter, as noted during the earnings call. The earnings report demonstrated Urban Outfitters' sustained financial strength. The company enjoyed a healthy 9% sales growth in the third quarter, and their gross profit rate improved by over 500 basis points while total operating income saw a staggering 90% increase. The company's positive results could be attributed to several initiatives, services, and products as discussed in the earnings call. For instance, Nuuly, their rental subscription business, not only turned its first ever quarterly profit but also showed a significant rise in revenue. This trend was also observed with the Free People and FP Movement brands, both of which set new records for sales and profits in Q3. Urban Outfitters expressed its intention to invest significantly to further boost performance. Part of their plans is to augment the product offerings and marketing for the Urban Outfitters brand. This move will involve curating a thoughtful variety of products from both national and emerging brands, enhancing the importance of their internally created brand products, and deepening customer engagement by leveraging various marketing platforms. As acknowledged in the earnings call, the appointment of a President for the Urban Outfitters brand is a strategic move that is anticipated to play a pivotal role in the company's forward journey.

San Francisco's Union Square will soon have another empty storefront.Anthropologie, a retailer chain that specializes in women's clothing and accessories, is closing its location at 880 Market St. on May 13, according to the Anthropologie website. The 880 Market St. location has been a staple of the Union Square retail space, and originally opened there more than two decades ago. Spokespeople for Anthropologie and its parent company, URBN, did not respond to repeated requests for comment from SFGATE.Anthropologie joins a long list of retailers that have left Union Square and downtown San Francisco in recent years. That list includes luxury goods stores like CB2 and the RealReal, as well as chains like Gap, Uniqlo and DSW. In March, Whole Foods announced that it, too, was closing its downtown San Francisco location, which a spokesperson blamed on safety issues for employees. (The spokesperson did not elaborate on those concerns when contacted for more information by SFGATE.)Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople
Today's episode is a case study of leadership, a commitment to customers and other stakeholders – including the environment – and how a modern, learning organization created not just a new business, but the leading business in its category. In less than five years, URBN Brands' Nuuly has gone from a concept to the leading company in the clothing rental subscription business, surpassing Rent the Runway in terms of the number of subscribers. Nuuly's Kim Gallagher shares the story of how URBN identified a new business opportunity through customer insights that leveraged its core competencies – including its enlightened leadership team and the broader, supportive organization – and the not purely incidental benefit of a clothing business with more social responsibility in terms of sustainability. It's an inspiring lesson that the power of customer-led innovation, a willingness to take risks (especially amid the COVID pandemic) and a leadership team that empowers a learning organization can do great things that benefit all stakeholders in a pretty short period of time. Hosted by Phil Rubin. Show Notes: 1) URBN Brands 2) Nuuly 3) Kim Gallagher
Matt Kaness has an extensive retail background with a heavy focus on e-commerce, having worked as the CEO of Modcloth and, for eight years, URBN's chief strategy officer. Since late last year, he's zeroed in on retail's booming resale sector, as CEO of the new online marketplace GoodwillFinds. “We're a technology venture,” Kansas said on the latest Glossy Podcast, explaining GoodwillFinds' business model. The company's tech focus includes building out proprietary tools “for sellers to be able to list [products] quickly, for customer acquisition and retention, and for [partner] Goodwill [store owners], in support of their packing, shipping and outbound logistics.” What drove Kaness's interest in running GoodwillFinds was, in part, timing. “Coming out of Covid, the Gen-Z consumer has said that there's no stigma on secondhand,” he said. “That, coupled with a lot of advancements in technology, has allowed resale to scale profitably.” GoodwillFinds, itself, has also impressively scaled. According to Kaness, the marketplace is currently attracting value-driven and trend-driven shoppers, with sustainability-driven shoppers being a target demographic. Since its launch, it's built up an email database of 250,000 subscribers, plus it's en route to offering 1 million products on its e-commerce site by the end of the year. It has 20 full-time employees, with 20-30 more set to come on board by the end of 2023.
Women's health needs are not a-one-size-fits-all, so why should your vitamins be? Doctors recommend pregnant women take prenatal vitamins, but what should perimenopausal women take or post menopausal? No matter where you are in your reproductive cycle, Alex Taylor, the co-founder and co-CEO of women's wellness brand Perelel, set forth to solve those supplemental needs. Alex became a self-proclaimed wellness buff after navigating her own thyroid diagnosis, and she's no stranger to products with a purpose after years working in the fashion and wellness space. She first grew intimately aware of the lack of transparency and education available in the prenatal-vitamin market when she was pregnant with her first child. That led her to begin customizing a prenatal regimen for herself. Searching for a solution, she launched Perelel: the first/only OB-GYN founded vitamin brand that meets you wherever you are on your journey as a mom. Perelel is pioneering a new standard for supporting women with vitamins for every stage of their reproductive life cycle. Previously, Alex served as president and executive editor-in-chief for Clique Media; maintained roles at Vogue, Rogers & Cowan, L'Oréal, Google and URBN's Free People; and has been recognized on Forbes 30 Under 30. Alex is a graduate of USC, with a dual-degree in journalism and creative writing. She resides in Los Angeles with her husband, two children, and her goldendoodle. This is our episode #4 in our ‘Life After Anthro' series. Guest Elaine Strawbridge is a passionate creative and leader with a 20+ year career in retail. Growing up in the greater Chicagoland area, she was immersed in sports and her emerging love for the arts. At Columbia College, Elaine earned a Liberal Arts Degree with focus on sculpture – working primarily with metal & wood. After graduation, she learned to weld and continued to dig deeper into her passion for working with mixed materials. During college, Elaine worked for The Gap and found the retail environment exciting, ever-changing and always challenging. This was the start of her journey into visual merchandising and window display, allowing her to apply her creative passion in a career. In 1999, Elaine was hired at Anthropologie/URBN Inc, where she would advance over the next 17 years. During her time with Anthro, she moved to California and built her life in LA. In 2010 Elaine started B.E. Woodcraft, a small jewelry line, creating handmade wooden heart necklaces and sold them at Anthro and BHLDN. In 2016 she left URBN to pursue a new challenge as a consultant in the marketing world. Once out of visual merchandising/display, her passion shifted focus onto team leadership and development – and her creative mind took on challenges that are “people” focused. From 2016-2021 Elaine co-created and built a global brand advocacy and training program – spanning 11 countries with over 450 staff. Currently, Elaine is freelance consulting and developing a few new businesses which will launch in 2022 (ssshh, they are not ready to formally announce yet).
