Episode 39 | Deconstruction, and Why It's Not Something to Be Scared Of

Woman Being

The Woman Beings sit down to discuss the topic of "deconstruction" in depth, and share their own personal journeys of deconstruction. In much of the Christian world, there's not much room for asking questions, doubt, or uncertainty about one's faith. For most Christians, deconstruction is almost synonymous with leaving the faith. They share their own questions, how the journey can be lonely, the importance of having a trustworthy community to process with, and how to keep close to Jesus in the process. I first met Christa and her husband Luke (episodes 9 and 10) at a fearless intimacy workshop in Colorado only a few weeks after they resurrected their marriage. It was also around this time when they led their first marriage intensive to much approbation from attendees. This is one of Christa's many gifts to the world: turning her weaknesses and pain into strengths and offerings. Christa now leads several hundred women in her online teaching (currently iteration known as The Woman's Circle), and many more in her in-person workshops. Her success as a mentor comes as no surprise. She has been a tour de force in virtually all she has endeavoured, including writing music and books, touring as a musician, podcasting, and perhaps most important of all, motherhood. The dialogue from Christa in this episode flows smoothly, candidly, and with great depth. She sees the world in ways that many do not and draws from her observations profound wisdom. Currently she is undergoing a deconstruction of self, a ‘falling apart' as she calls it, and we explore what that looks like and means to her. We talk about conscious parenting, taking full ownership of her post in life, and loving herself right where she is. Christa uses all these life experiences plus her studies of energy medicine and movement to lead woman in personal transformation. Christa toured as a musician for over a decade with artists like The Jonas Brothers and Michael W. Smith. Her songs have sold millions of copies and have been recorded by the likes of American Idol winner Jordin Sparks. In 2012 and 2013, she had her first #1 hit as a songwriter when Passion's version of One Thing Remains topped the radio charts. Every day Christa releases content that spans the globe, providing resources for those broken by the traumas of life, teaching practical steps to inner healing and giving support and encouragement for the journey. She has been impacted by more than her fair share of trauma: childhood sexual abuse, eating disorders, addictions, rejection, betrayal, depression, and the loss of her infant daughter. Her most popular works are her 2 books, God Loves Ugly and Heart Made Whole, while her podcast Head to Heart remains one of my favourites for its raw heart-centred power. Christa does not shy away from tough questions. In this episode, as in all content she produces, she is courageously transparent, wise, and deeply inspirational. I hope you find her generosity and experience useful. Enjoy this episode of Salish Wolf with Christa Black Gifford. On paper, Christa Black Gifford’s resume appears quite impressive by the world’s standards. Touring as a musician for over a decade with artists like The Jonas Brothers and Michael W. Smith, her songs have sold millions of copies, recorded by American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, Kim Walker-Smith of Jesus Culture, Bethel Music, Kari Jobe, and Michael W. Smith. In 2012 and 2013, she had her first #1 hit as a songwriter when Passions version of One Thing Remains topped the radio charts. Christa has shared the Women of Faith Revolve Tour platform with speakers like Christine Caine and Lisa Bevere, releasing two books, Heart Made Whole and God Loves Ugly, and her articles have been featured in the ‘Best Of’ section on The Huffington Post. But what she does and how she does it mean nothing without understanding why. Christa has experienced agonizing levels of pain. And she believes that no one should ever experience pain alone. Early sexual trauma and the aftermath that come with it, eating disorders, substance abuse, rejection, betrayal, depression, and losing her infant daughter, Christa’s heart has been smashed repeatedly by the normal punches of life. But after years of dealing with heart-pain incorrectly (by trying to hide it, numb it, quote scripture at it, or ignore it), she discovered that pain doesn’t go away with time, religion, striving, or denial. All inner pain must be faced, embraced, and surrendered into an experience with Love. Every day, Christa releases content that spans the globe, providing resources for those broken by the traumas of life, teaching practical steps towards inner healing and giving support and encouragement for the journey. Her most popular works are her two books. The first, entitled God Loves Ugly (and the correlating study guide), were written specifically for those who can’t seem to see past their past, struggling with self-hatred, insecurity, and the destructive behaviors that come with it. Her newest work Heart Made Whole (hitting #1 on two categories on Amazon), was written after the death of her daughter Goldie. Christa chronicled her own journey out of the hell of death, teaching the broken hearted how to take their unhealed pain, dive into their hearts, find God in the midst of brokenness, and see pain transform into greatest strength. In today's episode I sit down with Christa as we discuss:  Being brave, leaving everything behind to follow your dreams and calling. Embracing and loving your true feminine self. The power of your feminine nature and how to experience wholeness and authentic love as a woman. Healing and processing pain with God and finding strength on the other side of trauma. (Christa discusses the loss of her daughter Goldie and her ongoing healing process)  Emotional health body, soul and spirit.  Waking up, thinking for our ourselves, and developing our sense of self as a christian woman.  Becoming like Christ through the cyclical nature of being a woman.  You can follow Christa here on instagram @christablackgifford and @the.whole.woman   Join the Make Your Passion Pay You Community here https://www.facebook.com/groups/makeyourpassionpayyou/ PASSIONISTA PODCAST SHOW NOTES: lindseynadler.com/podcast

I have Christa Black Gifford with me on this episode of Thriving Beyond Belief, and I could not be more thrilled! Christa is an author, wife, and mother who shows true vulnerability in all areas of her life. On this episode, we talk through trauma, performance, loss, reconciliation, hope, and who God is in the midst of all of those things. Going through trauma at an early age, Christa discusses constant coping from that as she grew up. She tried to find identity in what she could control, and how that manifested itself in her life. We talk about pain and how our natural inclination is to avoid pain at all costs. We have confused God's peace with being comfortable. We discuss wounds and the roots of our pasts that affect our actions. But we talk about how God's goodness is not that we have an easy life, but rather it is that our lives are reconciled to Him. Christa talks about walking through some difficult life issues and how she has shifted her thinking from "this is happening to me" to "this is happening for me". It is that shift to see every story can be used and redeemed by the Lord. We discuss what trauma even does to us physically and when you come face-to-face with the trials in your life, it leads to healing. It was amazing to hear Christa speak of the hope of Jesus in her life. How He has revealed Himself to her in several ways. She discusses those methods of seeing Christ and restoring herself back to His purpose. I hope you take a listen to this woman's amazing journey, and how God is redeeming all of us.

Christa Black Gifford joined me as my guest for Happy Hour #106. Christa is a dynamic worldwide speaker, worship leader and bestselling songwriter. She is a popular blogger, writes for The Huffington Post, and was the keynote for Women of Faith’s Revolve Tour. Her life goal is to provide resources for those broken by the pain of life, leading them into wholeness of heart and intimacy with Jesus.  She’s married to the love of her life, Lucas Gifford. They live in Nashville, with their son, Moses Grae Lionheart, a daughter in heaven, Luca Gold, and their newest addition, daughter, Birdie James. Christa and Lucas are expecting their fourth child in November. In today's show, Christa and I chat about everything she has going on - from songwriting for a movie to growing another baby to moving houses. She shares how she and her husband endured a difficult season losing a child. I interviewed Christa last month for the Influence Network where she shares more about that experience. If you are interested in hearing more about their loss, you can check that out here. But in today's conversation, she shares about the powerful moment about how the final verse of one of my favorite worship songs, One Thing Remains, became even more true in the moments after her daughter's passing. Christa also tells about a hilarious experience while touring with the Jonas Brothers, which she talks about like it's totally normal...like who doesn't tour with the Jonas Brothers? I'll let you hear it straight from her, but it involves a crazy fan and a 6th floor hotel room. That's all I am going to say. {You can listen to the showHERE. While Christa’s effortless singing and accomplished violin and songwriting abilities have attracted critical acclaim, she is much more than just a musician. Her passion for speaking and writing have inspired thousands to find freedom from addictions, eating disorders, shame, and self-hatred. Christa began her songwriting career during one of the most difficult times in her life. In a desert treatment facility for eating disorders, she admitted herself for forty days and picked up an old guitar, writing songs that helped cope with the pain of her addictions. Songwriting for personal therapy led to writing for others, and her songs—including the multi-platinum-selling songs God Loves Ugly and Was I The Only One recorded by American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, Deep In Love With Whenever Christa Black looked in the mirror, she was waging a war with herself. Her hatred of her face and body drove her, as a young woman, into frantic overachievement, addiction, and an eating disorder that landed her in rehab. A preacher's kid, she'd grown up imagining God as a "thou shalt not" tyrant. It was only when she miraculously discovered God's unconditional love for her--physical imperfections, moral failings, and all--that she finally began to accept herself. As she tells her story, Christa shares the tools she uses to combat the self-rejection that harms so many people's lives. In this raw testimony, Christa Black takes women on a step-by-step journey of faith and positive belief to reveal that if God loves ugly, then we can too.   You and Help Is On The Way by Grammy winning artist Michael W. Smith,  One Thing Remains by Kristian Stanfill of Passion, Unstoppable Love and The King Is Here by Kim Walker-Smith, and Forever by Kari Jobe—have inspired listeners to explore places of their heart they might have fought to ignore. Christa’s book God Loves Ugly chronicles her personal journey out of destructive cycles into a life of freedom. Unashamedly transparent, she describes her painful struggle to find personal peace from the monsters of insecurity, self-hatred, sexual abuse, depression, and eating disorders. She takes the reader on a journey of self-discovery, exposing the negative thoughts, feelings, and emotions that can lead to paths of bondage. Her conversational style and light-hearted storytelling will leave you laughing at her mistakes, challenged by her teaching, and crying with her pain, inviting the reader into practical steps towards healing and freedom.
