2024 saw a number of high profile criminal and civil cases that all had one thing in common: the victim was a woman. We may have had an increase in media attention with a number of victims in cases waiving their rights to anonymity throughout the past year, but the fact of the matter is the issue of violence against women remains a significantly prevalent problem in Ireland. As the Kohberger defense team moves ahead with their trial preparations in hopes of moving the proceeding out of Latah County, they put together a research project. In that research project, they hired a polling company to survey area residents to ask questions about how much the residents may know about the murders. The company had reached around 400 residents before a concerned citizen recorded one of the survey phone calls and contacted the district attorney's office to complain. Prosecutors say the polling company was asking questions to plant negative opinions of Kohberger in potential jurors' minds in the hopes the calls would serve to prove that local people were prejudiced against Kohberger and that the trial should be moved to another county. We're on a short summer break at the moment and so we're resurfacing some of our favourite and most popular episodes from the last few months. This episode first aired in November 2022 - its a fascinating chat with Frank Greaney, Courts Correspondent with Newstalk and Today FM, and also podcast host, author, and restaurateur! I love Frank's on-air appearances with Matt Cooper and they have been inspiring quite a few Gift Grub sketches recently. When you hear Frank talk about what he does, why he does it and the cases that have made the most impact on him, you'll understand why he is so compelling to listen to. Frank reveals what inspired him to get into the field of crime, it's impact on him and his thoughts on judicial sentencing in Ireland.
