Bodybuilders are perfectionists. They're fastidious on internet forums, economical in their IRL conversations, and at the gym they wear ‘No excuses' singlets. As kids they may have been the ones insisting on only eating orange food, or completing a Rubik's Cube in 15 seconds. This episode, we're looking at shredding, the art of getting jacked – be that for bodybuilding, gymfluencer photo shoots, athletes who need to drop a weight class, actors who need to look buff, or just because.Jenny recounts her lead up to competing in bodybuilding (a once-only venture), when she transformed into a human Cadbury's Curly-Wurly and brought home gold and bronze medals, but at a cost to her health. This is a rare fish-out-of-water insight into the surreal world of bodybuilding, part sport, part spectacle, which comes laden with risks and rewards. What draws people to it? Who excels at it? What gets spoken of and what doesn't? And more pressingly, what did Frank think about the dramatically changing body of his girlfriend? Our guests this week are Paul Jayilian, Jenny's trainer and a world champion, who goes deep into the alchemy of ‘peak week'. Also, Jenny's posing coach, Nat Kitney, who aims to be a soft place to land for her clients, in a sport that's all about being hard on yourself.LINKSPaul Jayilian's Empire FitnessPosing Coach Nat KitneySpirit Levels on InstagramSpirit Levels on TikTokGet our free newsletter! This episode was mixed by Ally Kallis. "Your first job is not necessarily what you're going to do for the rest of your life. Just think about what you would enjoy, rather than stressing that you've committed to a career for 50 years." Ella Jones is Junior Brand Manager at Mondelez International, the multinational company which boasts the likes of Cadbury, Oreo, Ritz, and Green and Black's in its portfolio. She's only been in the role a few years, but her story could prove inspirational for anyone receiving exam results this summer, and starting to consider where their career might be heading. Ella studied English Literature at the University of Exeter and wasn't entirely sure what she would do after. In this episode of the Career Conversations podcast series, she reveals the unconventional approach she took to hunting for a job and ended up at Mondelez. She says she looked at the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers list and thumbed through, highlighting companies that she though looked interesting. When she came across Mondelez, she says she thought to herself "I know that I'm passionate about chocolate", so she took a look online to see what jobs were available. She ended up on the company's graduate scheme, which lasts three years and covered finance, sales, and marketing. "It gave me exposure to a real breadth of roles," she says. "I would definitely recommend doing a graduate scheme." Ella says the scheme was a great way to set her up for the world of work, including basic things like booking a meeting room or having an end of year review - small experiences that can give you confidence in the workplace. Listen to the full episode to find out what it's like to work at Mondelez, how Ella has managed to overcome bouts of imposter syndrome in the past, and she tells just about the nicest Curly Wurly story you're ever likely to hear. Ella Jonas, Junior Brand Manager, Mondelez International Ella is from Winchester in Hampshire, but now lives in London. She studied English Literature at Exeter University. She applied to Mondelez, an international FMCG company which owns Cadbury, Oreo, Green & Black's, Toblerone, Philadelphia and lots more. She did three years on the Sales and Marketing graduate scheme. That scheme saw her cover revenue planning, a type of internal finance, working on Christmas biscuits, Freddo marketing, sales, managing Christmas and Easter in Co-Op. She is now back in marketing, but the scheme was a great opportunity to experience multiple functions and enhance her skillset.

Mondelēz [mohn-dah-LEEZ], the parent company of confectionery brand Cadbury, has decided to reduce the calories of some of its chocolate bars. The company announced that it will be cutting calories from childhood favorites Fudge, Curly Wurly, and Chomp bars in coming months. After the change, all three chocolate bars will have fewer than 100 calories. The move follows the company's decision last year to cut the calories of its Mini Fingers and Animals. Mondelēz executive Louise Stigant said the company made the decision in order to help tackle obesity among children in the country. According to Mondelēz, there will be no changes in the ingredients of the chocolate bars. The company explained that only the size will change, but they have yet to confirm by how much. Currently, Curly Wurly bars weigh 26 grams and contain 118 calories, Fudge bars weigh 25.5 grams and have 114 calories, and Chomp bars weigh 23.5 grams and contain 110 calories. Both individual chocolate bars and those sold in multipacks will have reduced calories. The company will also revamp the packaging design to highlight the change in calorie count. According to Stigant, Mondelēz feels strongly about its pledge to tackle childhood obesity. She believes that the new campaign can help parents more easily control calories when giving treats to their children.

It seems like a good thing to have a strategy for keeping sane. For that strategy to be wild swimming feels counter intuitive. Especially when so many non swimmers’ response to us is ‘you must be mad!’ In this week’s episode, my guest Miriam talks about how wild swimming helped her overcome anxiety. Which is odd when we also explore the sense of dread and conflict we get as we prepare to head out to do a wild swim, especially in winter. How can something that creates such inner conflict be good for us? I can relate to all of this. At the moment I am in the grip of the worst bout of anxiety I can remember experiencing. Getting into near freezing water gives me a therapeutic sense of taking a huge breath in and letting it go, and with it releasing all the tension I’m carrying around. If only for a short while. I need it. It’s saving me. Miriam then expands on how she uses this to deal with other challenges in her life. I’ve never really thought about harnessing the inner strength and determination I have when it comes to fighting the inner conflict which I will not let get in the way of me swimming. To then apply this to other situations that scare me and make me doubt myself is genius. Like Miriam says, “you know you can get into 4 degree water in awful weather – I’m sure you can do those other things in your life that you fear – they are probably easier in many ways.” She’s right. So my challenge for this week is to bring my inner wild swimmer into the rest of my life – when I’m fronting a big event at work this week; when I’m dealing with conflict in a relationship; when I’m driving in horrendous weather on roads I don’t know. Anyone who recognises any of this should consider getting in touch to be a future guest. We can now record interviews over the internet so no matter where you are in the world, you can get involved and share your own reasons for swimming and what it means to you.
