Olivier Tosseri, La Folie d'Annunzio ; L'affaire de Fiume (1919-1920), Éditions Buchet-Chastel, le 24 octobre 2019 à la Libreria Stendhal. Septembre 1919. L'Europe respire à nouveau l'air pur de la paix. Alors que les armes se taisent et que ses frontières sont redessinées par les États-Unis, la France et le Royaume-Uni, en Italie on crie à l'injustice. Un dandy poète soldat, Gabriele D'Annunzio dénonce la «Victoire mutilée» de son pays qui espérait obtenir bien plus de l'effondrement de l'Autriche-Hongrie. Engagé volontaire, le héraut du nationalisme italien est également un héros de guerre par ses actions d'éclat. Il met sa verve, son charisme et sa gloire au service de la cause de Fiume. Ce port de la côte dalmate, peuplé d'Italiens et entouré de Slaves, devient la pierre d'achoppement entre l'Italie et le futur royaume de Yougoslavie. Les grandes puissances refusent de prendre parti et veulent en faire une «ville libre», Gabriele D'Annunzio va la libérer. À la tête d'une poignée de conjurés, de vétérans et de troupes de choc il s'empare de Fiume le 12 septembre 1919. Pas un coup de feu n'a été tiré ni une goutte de sang n'a été versée. C'est le début d'une épopée politique et artistique qui va durer quinze mois. La liste de ceux qui accourent pour y participer ne cesse de s'allonger : futuristes, anarchistes, syndicalistes révolutionnaires, artistes, aventuriers en tout genre. On y parle libération des peuples opprimés et on y vit la libération sexuelle, on pratique le végétarisme et le naturisme en consommant des narcotiques... Le laboratoire du XXe siècle avec ses passions et ses utopies. Sexe, Drogues et Fox Trot. Un viaggio nel tempo lungo un secolo, quello che facciamo oggi a Olympia, un viaggio che collega il presente, con un campionato avvincente che vede Juventus Lazio e Inter in corsa per lo scudetto, al passato, ai giorni in cui cento anni fa nel febbraio 1920, proprio quel triangolino di stoffa tricolore apparve per la prima volta sulle maglie di una squadra di calcio, da cui poi passerà, qualche tempo dopo, su quelle della squadra campione d'Italia Un viaggio che, come avete sentito affonda le radici in quella città chiamata allora dagli italiani Fiume, e che oggi Rjieka, in Croazia. Città che Gabriele D'annunzio, il vate della letteratura italiana, di fatto annette con la forza all'Italia, quasi contro lo stesso volere dei Savoia, trasformandola di fatto tra il settembre 1919 e il dicembre 1920 in una città autonoma sotto il suo controllo diretto controllo, fin quando i legionari dannunziani non vengono cacciati con la forza, in seguito al Trattato di Rapallo che istituisce lo stato libero di Fiume, che dopo varie vicessitudini venne annesso alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale alla Jugoslavia Ebbene, fu proprio in quella Fiume dannunziana che prese vita e forma quel triangolo tricolore, quello scudetto (e oggi capiremo anche l'origine di questo nome) che di lì a poco diventerà il simbolo dei campioni d'italia e degli azzurri di tutti gli sport. In the neat and tidy chronology of the classroom, 1920 is often seen as the end of a period of conflict and the start of an entirely new era. But that, argues the historian Charles Emmerson, is a misreading of history. The Great War might have ended. The Treaty of Versailles might have been signed. But right across Europe the old conflicts continued. In 1920, for instance, there was gorilla war in Ireland, civil war in Russia, a putsch in Germany and there were troops on the Rhineland. ‘The war was not over,’ Emmerson says, ‘it had only fragmented into a million different conflicts and upheavals, cultural and political.’ In this episode Emmerson guides us through the tangled politics of this complex year.
