What is the formula to launching a successful business career? And what does a "successful business career" mean for a military officer who wants to transition? We define this concept more HERE but wanted to share a story of how a Cameron-Brooks alum utilized three strategies to successfully transition with a long-term goal in mind. When we published the Transition Guide "3 Game-Changing Strategies for JMOs Making the Jump to Business", I thought about many of our Alumni who executed these strategies perfectly and are now achieving the personal and professional success they envisioned when leaving the military. They committed to investing in their careers early by getting on board with an industry-leading company that valued their JMO experience and built a track record of success within the first 3 to 5 years. They made tradeoffs such as time to get their MBA, starting in a good location but not the ideal location and avoiding easy assignment for the tough ones that moved their organization forward. I specifically thought of a friend, Notre Dame classmate of mine and Cameron-Brooks Alumnus, Dan Farrell. Dan transitioned from the Army in 1999 to Kraft Foods in Brand Management in Chicago, IL. Despite his family in Florida and South Bend, IN, Dan explored a broad range of options, including winery operations in California, corporate procurement in retail operations in Texas, marketing with Kraft Foods in Chicago, IL and many others. He chose a company that valued his background and provided the foundation for him to launch a career in sales and marketing. Along the way, he earned his MBA at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Business. After 5 years with his track record of success, he moved back to his hometown of South Bend, IN. In fact, he moved into a home on the same block as his parents. I get it when JMOs want the ideal location and best opportunity. I want the same thing for them. However, I get concerned about JMOs who want an engaging and fulfilling career and the ideal location. Prioritizing the ideal location immediately out of the transition could lead to a tradeoff on the quality of the opportunity. If Dan chose to prioritize South Bend immediately, he most likely would have taken a step down in opportunity, changed companies a couple of times in the first 5 years, and continued looking for an ideal career fit. Instead, he prioritized a premier opportunity. By doing so, he now lives in his ideal location, works remotely for a company based out of Nashville and is one of the top 5 people in his company. Dan focused on the 3 Game-Changing Strategies: Build a track record of success. Work for an industry-leading company. Be a part of an organization that values the JMO skillset. By following this formula, much like investing and saving early in personal finance, he is now reaping the rewards later in his career. You can learn more about how he did it in this podcast and his advice to JMOs making the transition today. If you're interested in learning more about why companies hire from Cameron-Brooks, contact us! You can also check out our Transition Guide on "3 Game-Changing Strategies for JMOs Making the Jump to Business" for additional transition tips. Joining me on today's episode of The English Wine Diaries is Dan Farrell-Wright from online wine merchant Wickhams, The Great British Wine Merchant and our sponsor for this series of the podcast. Dan started Wickham's in November 2020, at the height of the pandemic and quickly caught the attention of the wine industry. Within a year, the Newton Abbot-based company had been shortlisted for two Decanter wine awards. The team at Wickhams are hugely passionate about knowing the story behind the wines they sell, a quarter of which come from England and Wales, so they can help encourage their customers to try new varieties from producers they might not have come across before. This year, Wickhams made the finals in two categories at the International Wine Challenge Merchant Awards against heavyweights including Laithwaites and Waitrose and picked up the trophy for Specialist Merchant of the Year for their dedication to English wine. We talk about how Dan first got into wine, why he started the business and why there was no question that Wickhams would specialise in English wine. To keep up to date with all Wickhams' latest news, follow @wickhamwine on Instagram and Facebook and visit wickhamwine.co.uk to see their award-winning range of English wine with free deliver on orders over £40.If you enjoyed the podcast then please leave a rating or review, it helps boost our ratings and makes it easier for other people to find us. What would be if we could each help one another remember the ways in which we matter, the ways in which are are unarguably of value, the ways in which our mere presence is a gift? Perhaps it would help us find some respite from the strong cultural pressures to think of ourselves as incomplete, or faulty, or missing something. Perhaps it would help us give up equating our value with our looks, our circumstances, our difficulty. And maybe it would give us the courage to respond to the world when our response is most called for. This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about how we might give one another the gift of a profound kindness - remembering our goodness - hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Find us on FaceBook to watch live and join in the lively conversation on this episode. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website, and you can also watch and listen on Instagram, YouTube, and as a podcast on Apple, Google and Spotify. Here's our source for this week: As You Have Done for Me If you were here I would put my hand on your heart and hold it there until our breaths became a single tide, hold it there until I could feel the moment when you remember your infinite value. It's so easy to forget we are treasure. So easy to lose track of our own immeasurable worth. The chest rusts shut. We think we are empty. Amazing how easily we are fooled into believing we're paupers. Sometimes it takes another to remind us we have always been not only the treasure but also the key. Though the hinges are a metaphor, the treasure is not. We were made to open, to share our priceless gift, to press our hands to each other's hearts until we all remember. by Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer ahundredfallingveils.com Photo by Dan Farrell on Unsplash
