Jason Redmon, proprietor of the iconic Hub City Diner at 1412 S. College Road in Lafayette, joins Discover Lafayette to celebrate Hub City Diner's longevity and popularity, as well as his support of Lafayette Travel and Eat Lafayette, a yearlong celebration of Lafayette's locally owned restaurants. Hub City Diner's ambiance is akin to the famous tv show, "Cheers," where everyone knows your name. It is a real '"Hub" of activity in Lafayette, where locals meet, greet, and share their lives while enjoying their favorite comfort foods. The diner was established originally as Stansbury's Café in 1965, in the early days of the Oil Center, the commercial neighborhood that surrounds Hub City Diner. Thereafter, Lafayette restaurateur Charlie Goodson, Chef Pat Mould and advertising executive and local foodie George Graham, opened Hub City Diner in the space. Their intial concept was a 1950s diner, but with more of a Louisiana twist. Jimmy Guidry, who has years of food and bar experience throughout Lafayette, purchased the restaurant in 1998. Jason is 46 years old and has worked at Hub City Diner for more than half of his life. This is only the 4th job he has held in his life. A Bunkie native, his first job was working for his uncle on his sweet potato farm in Evergreen where he "caught the skips," making sure that the sweet potato roots were properly placed in the ground. Jason recalls his uncle saying to him, "You hot boy? You got to get hot with it!!" Jason still thinks about the lessons he learned from his uncle about having true grit and has maintained that strong work ethic to this day. "You've got to have grit and push through to get to the other side." Jason worked at McDonald's and Subway in Bunkie before he moved to Lafayette in the late 1998 to study Hospitality Managment at USL. His boss at Bunkie's Subway, Al Mahfouz, encouraged him to call upon the Hub City Diner manager at the time, Danny Fontenot, who hired Jason to serve as host and waiter. Jason first met Jimmy Guidry a few months after he started working at Hub City Diner, and the two became fast friends and colleagues. "People think that Jimmy Guidry and I are father and son. We have a synergistic relationship. We're not related by blood, but I guess we are now related through all of our time together. He's been a tremendous mentor and I'm very fortunate to have him in my life. I've been blessed with two dads. Jimmy told me, "If there is anything you've learned from me, I hope it is to be generous," Jason Redmon shared. And Jason did learn from Jimmy, still putting community first when he is asked to support local causes. He asks before he gives, "Will this help our community?" On January 1, 2022, Jason Redmon, Hub City Diner's longtime manager, took over ownership from Jimmy Guidry. The ambiance in the diner remains the same, with vinyl booths and chairs, checkered floors, nostalgic photos on the wall, and even a ceramic Pelican that's dressed like Elvis. Hub City Diner offers All-American comfort food, where there is something on the menu for everyone; people of all ages enjoy the diner's fare, from tiny tots enjoying meals offered in paper containers resembling classic cars to adults enjoying Mimosa's for $5 anytime of day. There is truly something for everyone who walks in and is greeted kindly. Meatloaf, salads, and eggs rule the offerings, while there are also specials on weekends which include smoked salmon, avocado toast, and fried green tomato spinach florentine meals. The hamburger steak is the most popular item on the menu. The feeling of community at Hub City Diner is palpable, as its staff cordially welcomes first-time visitors along with long-time regulars who frequent the diner after church in the early morning hours each weekday or who are always seen sitting in their favorite booth each weekend. With a staff that experiences very little turnover,

We stand proudly on the altar of physical media, but some people take it to some truly different levels...On this episode we jump into a tribute to an iconic video store that had it's story evolve into something you couldn't even imagine. On Blu-Ray and on demand platforms now, it's time for "Kim's Video'.Physical media reigns supreme in Kim's Video, an elegiac tribute to the iconic video store in New York City that inspired a generation of cinephiles before it mysteriously closed its doors and sent its legendary film archive to a small and slightly dubious Sicilian village for “safekeeping.” But what starts as an homage to cinema quickly becomes a rescue mission to ensure the eternal preservation of the beloved video collection. It's an ode to that obsession to be able to have that piece of cinema history in your hand, and this story of cinema itself becomes cinema in a way that has to be seen to be truly believed. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with directors David Redmon and Ashley Saban to talk about the origins of wanting to tell this story, it's subsequent evolution and so very much more....

MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Nov 3rd Publish Date: Nov 2nd Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Friday, November 3rd and Happy 73rd Birthday to boxer Larry Holmes ***LARRY HOLMES*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia Georgia Journalist Jim Wooten Dies at 78 Mableton Mayor says 'Highly Likely' Citizens Will See Higher Natural Gas Prices MUST Ministries Opens Thrift Store in East Cobb All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Georgia Journalist Jim Wooten Dies at 78 Renowned Georgia journalist Jim Wooten passed away at the age of 78. He had a long and impactful career, serving as an editor and conservative columnist at the Atlanta Journal and later at the Journal-Constitution. Wooten was known as the "voice of conservatives" at AJC and was actively involved in the GOP, offering his time and mentorship to young leaders. In addition to his journalism career, he served in the Georgia Army National Guard, retiring as a colonel. Later in life, he and his wife, Ann, restored an historic home and received an award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. A memorial service is scheduled for November 11. STORY 2: Mableton Mayor: 'Highly Likely' Citizens Will See Higher Natural Gas Prices The Mableton City Council is considering a 30-year contract with Austell Gas System, which could raise natural gas prices for residents. The contract is one of several franchise fee agreements being considered by Mableton with utility companies. The city collects franchise fees from utilities for using government rights-of-ways, and they are a significant source of revenue for the city. In this contract, Mableton would collect 3% of Austell Gas System's sales receipts, and the company is likely to pass that fee on to customers. The fees, though they may lead to higher utility costs, are necessary for a city that doesn't levy property taxes and require revenue to operate. STORY 3: MUST Ministries Opens Thrift Store in East Cobb MUST Ministries CEO Ike Reighard inaugurated the new MUST Marketplace thrift store in East Cobb. The thrift store was previously located in Marietta and has now moved to a 7,000-square-foot space in the Sandy Plains Village shopping center. The store offers various items, including clothing, books, kitchenware, Christmas decor, sports gear, and furniture. The revenue generated from the thrift store will be reinvested in MUST's programs to support those in need. The store's affordability makes it accessible to clients and helps expand MUST's presence in East Cobb, allowing people to learn more about MUST Ministries and its mission. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – ELON – DAYCO STORY 4: 'Something for everybody': New Barnes & Noble Opens at Avenue East Cobb Barnes & Noble has opened a new 15,000-square-foot store in Avenue East Cobb, featuring a brighter and more community-focused design. Bestselling author Mary Kay Andrews was present for the store's grand opening, where she held a meet-and-greet and book signing. Barnes & Noble's rebranding aims to tailor each store to the local community's preferences. The store brought in 89 pallets of 75,000 pounds of books, creating a model for other locations with a wide selection of titles. The bookstore emphasizes its "New and Noteworthy Fiction" section to entice customers as they enter the store, offering a curated shopping experience. STORY 5: Six Flags to Unveil America's First Coaster Of Its Kind Saturday Six Flags Over Georgia is set to introduce the "KID FLASH Cosmic Coaster," the first of its kind in America. This roller coaster features a "P'Sghetti Bowl twin-tracked" style, with twin tracks crossing over and under each other during the ride. Passengers will experience a comic book-themed adventure with LED lighting displays involving the heroes and villains of Gotham City. The ride is suitable for all ages with a 36-inch height requirement, and it allows riders to race others on the opposite side. The coaster opens to pass holders on Saturday and the general public on Sunday. We'll be back in a moment Break: DRAKE – INGLES 5 – THE MARKET STORY 6: Former Chief Scientist at GA Tech Research Institute Led Scheme to Defraud Tech, CIA James G. Maloney, the former chief scientist at the Georgia Tech Research Institute, has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison for conspiring to defraud Georgia Tech and the CIA. He, along with two other scientists, conspired to charge personal expenses to a Georgia Tech credit card, engaged in outside consulting activity, and covered up their actions. Maloney, James J. Acree, and James D. Fraley III worked on projects funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, intelligence agencies, and private companies. Between 2007 and 2013, they used their positions to charge hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal expenses. Maloney was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison and ordered to pay over $1.9 million in restitution. STORY 7: Richardson Ally Files Paperwork to Run For Cobb Commission Kevin Redmon, an ally of Democratic Cobb Commissioner Jerica Richardson, has filed paperwork to run for Richardson's seat on the Board of Commissioners. Redmon, who serves as the east Cobb liaison on Richardson's community cabinet, plans to run as a Democrat in District 2 in 2024. On his campaign website, he lists priorities like increased engagement, intentional budget planning, infrastructure modernization, smart planning for residential growth, and supporting local businesses. Every Veterans Day, Jeremy Redmon thinks about his father, Donald Lee Redmon — an Air Force veteran who survived more than 300 combat missions over Southeast Asia, but who took his own life when Jeremy was 14. This year, Redmon traveled back to Hanoi with a group of former prisoners of war, many of whom had flown the same missions as his dad. Jeremy asked these veterans questions he was never able to ask his own father, about how they'd healed from the war and lived rewarding lives thereafter. In this episode, guest host Jennie Rothenberg Gritz speaks with Redmon about the complexities of the Vietnam War, as well as his own experiences as a reporter in Iraq. Then, Vietnamese American author Mai Elliott discusses her family's experiences in North and South Vietnam, and how her feelings about the conflict changed throughout the 1960s. Read Jeremy Redmon's Smithsonian story “Fifty Years After Their Release, Former Vietnam POWs Journey Back to Hanoi” here. The world of presenting has changed. Have you noticed? There's often a camera in front of your face instead of live, three-dimensional audiences. How do you assure you are engaging and effective in the virtual space? Hint: Put your camera an arm's distance away and speak as if to one person. For more than 20 years, Marsha Redmon has taught executives and others how to have a more powerful presence when they speak. During the pandemic, she became the go-to expert, teaching professionals how to fix their virtual presence, encouraging them to speak with confidence and engagement–to win clients, have impact and own their niche. It has been so fun being here with Marsha Redmon. And I love thinking about how we experiment with virtual teams and how we get people. We treat the people in our meetings virtually, and how you give them a voice by pairing them with others.I think that's a great thing to experiment with. To create some equity and to get their ideas into a room. I think it's so easy to marginalize them because they're in technology. They don't get their ideas spoken, so they have to have their ideas told by others. It's a cool thing to try. I'd love to challenge you to amplify virtual team members' voices in meetings.Love the show? Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Devin: I'm 34 years old, never been on birth control but started it 3 years ago per a dermatologist advising this was the only way to combat cystic hormonal acne. I didn't want to be on it, but low and behold..it works. I've tried weening myself off of it 3 times and the breakouts are unbearable, so I inevitably go back on it. I saw my PCP last month and asked if there was anything else I could try, to which she advised there was not, but that on the bright side “menopause shouldn't be too far away so [I] won't have to stay on birth control forever”. I know there's a root cause here somewhere, I just don't know where to start. I don't understand how the hormones in birth control kill the inflammation, and how nothing else will help? I had never had thyroid issues until about a year after I started using it - and now I'm taking active steps to heal my body. So, where can I start with finding the root cause here? And will I be able to find it while I'm taking the hormonal birth control or will I need to stop taking it before doing any testing? Or do I really have to stay on birth control until I hit menopause? Please help! Erin: Sinus question: my allergist said I have calcification from dried mucus in my sinuses and the only way to get it out is the “roto-rooter” surgery where they put you under and clean all the sinuses out. Seems like there has to be another way to get it out...any ideas or suggestions? Thanks! Holli: My 15 year old son was diagnosed with EoE eosinophils of the esophagus. We can't afford lab testing. What do you recommend after the 7 day detox? Gary: Hi Dr. Cabral, I had a question regarding testicular pain due to pelvic floor dysfunction. I am currently working with a PT to resolve this. The pelvic floor issues have also contributed to chronic constipation and leaky gut. Until my pelvic floor issues are resolved, what do you think I could do to lessen pain? (ice and cold showers on the area tend to work) Thank you! Gary Gary: Hi Dr. Cabral, I have burning tongue issues that have been greatly lessened by taking B-12. (have tried both methylcobalamin and adenosyl hydroxy with similar results). It is now non-existent most of the time but randomly comes on at points during the day. All spices and even salt aggravate it, so I avoid those. Redmon's REAL salt is the only salt the doesn't both it. I have gut issues I'm working to resolve (chronic constipation, leaky gut, etc), which is probably why I have a B-12 deficiency. Any advise other than B-12 to fix the burning tongue or is simply once the gut is fixed it will be fixed? Thank you! Pamela: Hi Dr Cabral! I really enjoy your podcast and appreciate all the knowledge you share! My question is about oxalates. My diet is mostly plant based and recent tests have come back showing high oxalates. Is there a protocol that would help to decrease the oxalates? This week on the High Wire Woman podcast, Rosanna Berardi is letting listeners know the tips and tricks to looking good on Zoom. Her guest is Marsha Redmon, a communications expert and CEO of LexTrack Directories Software. Marsha works with lawyers and executives on communication, business development training, and marketing. In this week's episode, Marsha shares her story, and insights for High Wire Women on improving their virtual presence. You'll hear Rosanna and Marsha talk about: The most important thing about virtual presence and communication is that you need to be good at it, Marsha claims. She firmly believes that the workplace will never go back to being 100% in-person, so it's necessary for people to master their skills in virtual communication going forward. Looking into the camera makes your audience feel like they're having a one-on-one conversation with you, which builds your relationship with them. Overhead lighting is ideal - underhead lighting casts shadows around your face and makes you look old. Furthermore, it's better to have light shining toward your face rather than behind you; the latter shrouds your face in darkness, and your audience will be unable to read your expressions. Sometimes, you don't have a lot of options when it comes to places to have a virtual call in. In these cases, it's best to try to minimize your audience's view of your background as much as possible. You can also try unconventional places like a closet. Virtual backgrounds are, more often than not, more distracting than a messy one. Great lighting and a clean background are the most necessary components for a professional virtual presence. Know Your Contracts! Learn Now From An Attorney! Welcome to episode 20 of The Multifamily Millionaire: Real Income From Real Estate with Jason Lee. This week Jason welcomes Rebecca Larson and they discuss exactly why it is so important to have a real estate attorney be apart of your real estate transactions, even in the state of California. Rebecca Larson is a California Real Estate Attorney with a strong background in advanced real estate transactions leveraging her experience as the former owner of a title and settlement company. She is also an attorney in California, graduating from the New England School Of Law. Prior to joining the California Bar in 2019, Attorney Larson was a partner at Redmon, Peyton, & Braswell LLP in Alexandria, Virginia. She and two of her partners owned RPB Title and she was a title insurance producer in Virginia. Rebecca Larson is the owner and principal attorney of Your Home Legal, APC, where she assists clients with resolving real estate disputes, managing risk, and preventing future liability. She is licensed to practice in California, D.C., and Virginia. Here is what to expect on this week's show: How Rebecca ended up becoming involved in both real estate and law. The differences in working within the legal and real estate worlds between Virginia and California. The implications of buyers and sellers being the only ones involved in a contract that usually don't have attorneys (in California). The difference between mediation and arbitration, and why you need to understand what choosing one over the other means for you when conflict arises. Parts of a real estate contract that buyers and sellers often run into trouble with due to a lack of legal knowledge. Why an attorney is necessary in a transaction even if everything is running perfectly smoothly. A story when Rebecca was able to save the day, and a boat load of money, for a client she was working with. Why you need to focus on documenting everything during a transaction. The biggest mistake that Rebecca made that ended up being a blessing in the end. In Part 3 of Into America's Black History Month series, Harlem on My Mind, Trymaine Lee spotlights the influence of Jessie Redmon Fauset. Langston Hughes called her one of the midwives of the Harlem Renaissance, but few today remember her name.As literary editor for NAACP's The Crisis magazine, Fauset fostered the careers of many notable writers of the time: poets Countee Cullen and Gwendolyn Bennet, novelist Nella Larsen, writer Claude McCay. Fauset was the first person to publish Langston Hughes, when The Crisis printed the poem The Negro Speaks of Rivers. Fauset was also a writer, penning essays and poems. She went on to write four novels, including There is Confusion (1924). Her focus on bourgeois characters and women's ambition shaped the conversation about Black identity in Harlem at the time.Dr. Julia S. Charles, professor of English at Auburn University, sheds light on the full scope of Fauset's work, including her complicated relationship with Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois and other notable Black thinkers. Author Morgan Jerkins describes how Fauset's legacy has inspired her own work as a writer, editor, and resident of today's Harlem.Special thanks to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.Thoughts?
