Doctor What? Doctor Where? Stories of Rural Medicine in Victoria
Many rural doctors feel uneasy about the medico-legal aspect of their job when they're an intern. But while it is natural to feel uneasy, there is plenty of support available from senior doctors, nurses and administration staff. While the media often focuses on ‘suspicious' deaths, relating to homicide, that only makes up less than 2% of all the casework that's carried out by forensic doctors. Indeed ‘suspiciousness' is not even a criteria for reporting. So what is?In this episode hear from:Dr David Ranson - Adjunct Professor in the Department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University.Dr Mau Wee - Head of Service at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine.Medico-legal, is not about blame, rather it's about understanding how the death occurred and whether any systems need improving. This episode features advice on how to seek out help if you are writing your first death certificate and how to ‘keep it simple' when filling one out. Understanding when to report to the coroner is also discussed, along with what happens if you are required to prepare documentation for a coronial inquest.—For more information about the study and training opportunities across regional Victoria, head to the Monash Rural Health website. The North West Victoria and Gippsland Regional Training Hubs have commissioned this podcast to help medical students and junior doctors learn more about training and practising medicine in regional Australia. In this Bell Work Talk, we talk about Forensic Nursing in Switzerland. History, current situation and an outlook into the future. - Hints on how to implement Forensic Nursing - The importance of Networking to implement Forensic Nursing - Obstacles in implementing a new nursing specification - Get an overview how Forensic Nursing is developing in Switzerland or other European countries My name is Dominice, I am 40 years old and I work as a Forensic Nurse since two years at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Zurich. Since April we have a project at the Canton of Zurich where hospital emergency room staff can call us Forensic Nurses when they have people affected by sexual or domestic violence. We Forensic Nurses go out into the hospitals to document injuries, do DNA-swabs and talk with the people affected about next steps that can be done, mostly connect them to victim counselors. In Europe there is the “Istanbul Convention” who needs to be realized by the countries who signed the Convention. Goal of the convention is, to bring better support for victims of domestic or sexual violence. Switzerland has developed an Action Plan to implement the goals of the Istanbul Convention over the next few years. Forensic Nurses are or can be part of the plan. Forensic Nursing itself is relatively new in Switzerland and there are not a lot of possibilities to work as a FN in Switzerland at the moment. But we are working on it. Government Cover Ups & Conspiracy Theories Still a Thing? -------------------------------------------- 9 Huge Government Conspiracies That Actually Happened We all know the conspiracy theories — the government's plan for 9/11, the second gunman who shot JFK, the evolution of the elite from a race of blood-drinking, shape-shifting lizards. But the people who spread these ideas usually can't prove them. As the years pass, however, secrets surface. Government documents become declassified. We now have evidence of certain elaborate government schemes right here in the US of A. The US Department of the Treasury poisoned alcohol during Prohibition — and people died. The 18th Amendment, which took effect in January 1920, banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol — but not consumption. Despite the government's efforts, alcoholism actually skyrocketed during the era. To keep up with America's thirst, bootleggers not only created their own alcohol but also stole industrial versions, rendered undrinkable by the inclusion of certain chemicals (namely methyl alcohol). Liquor syndicates then employed chemists to "re-nature" the alcohol once again, making it safe for consumption, according to Deborah Blum, author of "The Poisoner's Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York." The US Public Health Service lied about treating black men with syphilis for more than 40 years. In 1932, the Public Health Service collaborated with the Tuskegee Institute to record the history of syphilis in the black male community, hoping to justify a treatment program. Called the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male, the study initially included 600 black men — 399 with the disease and 201 without. While the men were told they would receive treatment, however, the researchers never provided adequate treatment for the disease. Even when penicillin became the preferred and available treatment for syphilis, researchers kept their subjects in the dark. Although originally planned to last only six months, the experiment continued for 40 years. Finally, in 1972, an Associated Press article prompted public outrage and a subsequent investigation. A government advisory panel deemed the study "ethically irresponsible" and research ended almost immediately. As a result, the government settled a class-action lawsuit out of court in 1974 for $10 million and lifetime health benefits for all participants, the last of whom died in 2004. Parts of the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, which led to US intervention in Vietnam, never happened. Talk of Tonkin's status as a "false flag" for US involvement in the Vietnam War has permeated public discourse almost since the time of the attacks, especially after the government admitted that the second incident may have involved false radar images. Talk of Tonkin's status as a "false flag" for US involvement in the Vietnam War has permeated public discourse almost since the time of the attacks, especially after the government admitted that the second incident may have involved false radar images. But after resisting comment for decades, the National Security Agency finally declassified documents in 2005, admitting the incident on August 4 never happened at all. NEW, PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN SPECIES OF 1,000-YEAR-OLD HUMANOIDS RECENTLY DISCOVERED IN PERU, TO BE PRESENTED TO THE MEDIA BY UNIQUE TEAM OF SCIENTISTS, UFOLOGISTS AND AWARD-WINNING INVESTIGATIVE FILMMAKERS DURING LOS ANGELES PRESS CONFERENCE TO BE LIVE STREAMED AROUND THE WORLD Los Angeles, March 12, 2024 – In January 2024, two award-winning, Los Angeles-based investigative filmmakers, Serena DC and Michael Mazzola, took a trip together down to Mexico City to prove that the “alien mummies” which had been presented by iconic Mexican Investigator Jaime Maussan in Mexico City on September 13, 2023, before the Mexican Congress were, indeed fakes. Much to their surprise, DC and Mazzola discovered that the bodies Mr. Maussan had presented there that day were, in fact, A NEW SPECIES OF HUMANOID PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN TO SCIENCE! Following Mr. Maussan's presentation on 9/13/23 in Mexico City, Peruvian officials went to great lengths to discredit his “bodies” by conflating them with “other bodies” – dolls, in fact -- which had been created by an artist. Then claiming that Mr. Maussan presented “dolls” at his event, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture succeeded in generating a massive amount of negative media attention around the world, discrediting both the legitimacy of Mr. Maussan's “bodies” and Mr. Maussan, himself. Today, at a Global Press Conference at The Mondrian Hotel on Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood, CA, Serena DC and Michael Mazzola were joined by Mr. Jaime Maussan, inventor Adam Michael Curry, Peruvian Journalist Jois Mantilla, Dr. José de Jesús Zalce Benítez, Dr. Roger Zuñiga, Dr. Ricardo Manuel Anicama Pardo, Manuel Natividad Cruz Torres, Dr Juan Jose Rodriguez Lazo, Dr. Edgar Martin Hernandez, Dr. David Ruiz, and Dr. Rafael Arcangel Berrocal Ramos who collectively refuted the claims of “fake alien bodies.” This unique Team presented to the Media and to the World that Mr. Maussan's original two bodies, along with an additional five bodies discovered recently in a cave in Peru, HAVE BEEN SCIENTIFICALLY VERIFIED TO BE A PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN SPECIES OF HUMANOIDS LIVING ON EARTH, 1,000 YEARS AGO. During the Press Conference, the Team live streamed scientists from four locations in Mexico and Peru who demonstrated in real time scientific analyses and live body scans of these never-seen-before bodies. Some of these bodies are even believed to contain some ancient technology, for which Metallurgical Expert and Engineer Dr Manuel Torres provided expert testimony. “This is a once in a lifetime press event, where reporters will be the first people on Earth to see these incredible beings and judge for themselves if they were once living creatures or ‘fakes.' After we present the mind-blowing forensic evidence behind these creatures, the true origins of these mysterious creatures will be open for discussion,” said DC and Mazzola. Regarding the September 2023 revelation of “alien mummies,” acclaimed Astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson, on February 29, 2024, during an interview with 60 Minutes' Lesley Stahl, said, “We have to at least bring out the evidence. They did that in Mexico. That was an important first step – you present the evidence, then you send samples of it to other labs to verify or falsify your claims. That's how science works.” “We went down to Mexico to prove that these now infamous ‘alien mummies' were nothing but a fraud,” Serena DC and Michael Mazzola said. “But we immediately became aware that Peruvian officials and the media were pushing this as a fraud, not Jaime Maussan and not these scientists. Our press conference today is being presented to address all of the lies and misinformation about this topic that have been reported, around the world, since last September. Our goal is to hopefully set the record straight. These bodies are a significant archeological find – they are either an extinct, unknown species or the result of various genetic experiments from 1000 years ago, or something else we haven't considered. But they aren't dolls. And how could early humans have performed those genetic experiments 1000 years ago?” DC and Mazzola continue, “We have teamed up with a group of brilliant scientists, all of whom have been on the same quest as us – to discover the true origins of this new species. At today's press conference, our team of decorated scientists and forensics experts will be unveiling these ancient bodies, some of which stand about 4-feet tall. One of these scientists is Dr Jose Zlace, who has pointed out that “these tridactyl bodies correspond to biological and organic beings, with a harmonious and functional anatomical structure without traces of alteration or manipulation, being completely authentic, the DNA results corroborate their authenticity and at the same time demonstrate their differentiation to any Known species in Darwin's Taxonomy." Therefore, for Dr. Zalce we are faced with extraordinary bodies that could represent a paradigm shift in what is known and described by science as we currently know it. Dr Zlace states: "We need to protect these bodies from their natural degradation in order to preserve them and further deepen their study and understanding by the world's scientific community. These bodies of 3 different species are something extraordinary that must be treated with the necessary respect and objectivity so that humanity understands that we are facing something that could completely change our own conception and understanding as human beings.” ABOUT THE BODIES: The bodies of several unidentified species recently discovered in a remote cave in South America have just been analyzed by American scientists who are ready to come forward with their shocking findings. The bodies, which have been carbon dated to be around 1,000 years old, have had extensive scans and DNA testing done to them. The results of these tests have revealed these facts: ** The bodies appear to be the result of highly sophisticated genetic experiments that were not possible to be performed by early humans in 1000 AD. ** Mysterious DNA: Analysis indicates that 30% of their genetic material remains unidentified, presenting a profound mystery about their existence and origin.** Unique Physiological Traits: Exhibiting tridactyl hands and feet, alongside atypical anthropometric features – these beings challenge the very framework of biological evolution. Scientists are convinced that they have discovered a brand-new species of beings who were sentient, intelligent and who walked the Earth 1,000 years ago. However, there is no record of these creatures in the history books, leaving the scientific community with more questions than answers. It's cold. You've had a long day as an industrial water treatment professional battling scale, corrosion, unwanted microbiological activity, and inefficiencies. You're tired. You just want to go home, kick your feet up, relax, and get warm. You forget to take your test kit out of the car. You wake up in the morning, drive to the next industrial water system, open up your test kit, and it is FROZEN SOLID! What do you do? Do you run around in circles? Do you sit the test kit as closely to a boiler as you dare to thaw it out? Do you dunk it in hot water? The first thing you should do is learn your lesson and never let your test kit freeze again. Ever. I'll admit, I learned this lesson the hard way. Next, I consulted with a trusty test-kit manufacturing expert, and his suggestion was to allow it to thaw at room temperature. He said do NOT artificially heat it, even in hot water. Most reagents are likely to recover. To be safe, you should compare your test results to new reagents or another rep's results. Personally, I found my iodide/iodate titration solution used in the sulfite test was never the same after it froze and gave me low readings. You could also just replace all your reagents, but I understand that could get expensive. Another thing to consider when a test kit freezes is the impact upon testing equipment such as the pH probe, which may have cracked or broken as its internal solution froze and expanded. Plus, plunging a cold pH probe into a warm solution may induce cracking as well. 2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! In Mexico, 111,000 people are classified as disappeared and the country's morgues hold 52,000 unidentified corpses, bones and remains. The country is going through a crisis in forensic medicine fuelled by a lack of personnel, technology and political will – but also by significant corruption. Families of the disappeared have formed themselves into collectives and are trying to locate mass graves. But because their work is rarely followed up by forensic experts, justice remains elusive. Over the last 15 years, the country has been rocked by violence, and last year 28 people disappeared every day on average. Yet Mexico still doesn't have a national genetic database that allows experts to identify bodies efficiently. Our correspondents report.
For over a century, 19th century criminal history has been dominated by a single name. With his murders so violent, his acts so senseless, his victims so vulnerable and his legacy so profound, Jack the Ripper is as synonymous with Victorian London as the Queen herself. But whilst Jack was busy ripping, there was another series of murders being carried out that were equally as gruesome, executed by a killer equally as mysterious and whose story shared all the same traits of the Ripper, though despite it all, it is a story that has forever remained in the shadow of Jack, whose reign of terror consumed everything in its path, relegating all other mysteries to the back pages, for well over a hundred years. What the FUCK is going on in Columbus County, North Carolina? Courtney Deborah Heater was a beautiful, young, and vibrant woman who decided to give love a chance, and move from her home in Illinois, to Nakina, North Carolina, to be with her boyfriend Julian Fipps. Courtney thought she was being welcomed into a loving, and God-fearing family. What Courtney didn't know was she was about to be thrown into an unhealthy family dynamic, with a lengthy arrest history between both Julian and his father Anthony, and Julian's substance use challenges. After being brutally attacked by Julian in the street, and the attack being reported by neighbors, Courtney was admitted to the E.R. in September of 2019. According to Columbus County, the neighbors were not interviewed, and there is no incident report, nor was Julian ever charged. Why weren't the neighbors interviewed? Why was Julian never charged? Why is there no record of a report according to Columbus County? On February 2nd, 2020, Julian Fipps makes a confusing series of 911 calls, alleging that Courtney is aspirating, but insisting she never did drugs. Her body was found cold, and in a state of lividity, indicating she was obviously deceased for some time - yet Columbus County Sheriff's Office told EMS that they found a pulse, contradicting what they stated in the investigation report (she had no pulse). Courtney's body was found in a BEATEN state, with the autopsy noting dozens of contusions, blunt force trauma to the head, a mysterious mark that resembles a tire on her ankle, fractured ribs, and many other injuries. Yet the cause of death was ruled as an overdose, with no manner of death listed. There is no listed route of administration, and no drugs or paraphernalia were found on scene. Julian changed his story several times, and in one document it is recorded that Courtney began to throw up at midnight, yet the first 911 call isn't placed until 3:24. WHAT HAPPENED TO COURTNEY HEATER? WHY WAS THE STATE OF HER BODY NOT INVESTIGATED? In this episode I dive into the Fipps family, and their close ties with Columbus County Sheriff Jody Greene, who recently resigned after his blatant racism came to light. Yet, somehow, Jody Greene was recently re-elected as sheriff, and is set to return to office in December. Listen to the episode to learn more about the absolute SHIT SHOW that is Columbus County, North Carolina. Get angry, listeners. We need to stop this bullshit. Join us for a discussion of the transformation of Egypt's courts in a system of authoritarian presidential rule under Sisi, with US backing. *Arabic interpretation of this event is available here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1En5CdxJO7RaMr6Hezi19MFKrUgivR3a9/view?usp=sharing* The modern Egyptian judiciary was established in the middle of the 19th century and is one of the oldest in the Middle East. Throughout the 20th century and the first decade of this century, it enjoyed a large degree of independence from the executive branch of government. Since the coup of July 2013, led by then-head of the armed forces and current President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, the Egyptian state has gradually turned the judiciary into a subservient extension of presidential power to eradicate all opposition and critical voices from the public sphere. In this forum, experts on Egyptian legal history, human rights, and international law will discuss these attacks on the judiciary in Egypt, the complicity of the US and other Western governments, and the role of global solidarity in supporting victims of the military dictatorship in Egypt. Speakers: Khaled Fahmy is Sultan Qaboos Professor of Modern Arabic Studies in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge. His research interests lie in the social and cultural history of nineteenth-century Egypt, with special emphasis on the social history of the army, medicine and the law. His most recent book, In Quest of Justice: Islamic Law and Forensic Medicine in Modern Egypt, won the Peter Gonville Stein Book Award from the American Society for Legal History in 2019. Nancy Okail is President and CEO of the Center for International Policy in Washington, DC. She is a leading scholar, policy analyst, and advocate with more than 20 years of experience working on issues of human rights, democracy, and security in the Middle East and North Africa. In her subsequent role as Director of Freedom House's Egypt program, Okail was one of the 43 nongovernmental organization workers convicted and sentenced to prison in a widely publicized 2012 case for allegedly using foreign funds to foment unrest in Egypt. She was then exonerated by court ruling in December of 2018. Richard A. Falk is Albert G. Milbank Professor of International Law and Practice, Emeritus at Princeton University and Distinguished Visiting Professor in Global & International Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of The Nation and The Progressive, and Chair of the Board of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. During 1999–2000, Falk worked on the Independent International Commission on Kosovo. He blogs at Global Justice in the 21st Century. Yasmin Omar (moderator) is a human rights lawyer. She specializes in international law, UN mechanisms, and global sanctions. She practiced law in Egypt for ten years, defending victims of human rights violations, before moving to the United States after being targeted for her work. Omar is a member of the Steering Committee of the US Committee to End Political Repression in Egypt and the UN and regional mechanism officer at the Committee for Justice.
