Key Jewish ridings to watch as election results roll in tonight

It's Election Day in Canada. By last count, there are at least 26 Jewish candidates running in the 2025 federal election for all major parties, including the Conservatives (10), Liberals (7), NDP (5), People's Party of Canada (2), Green (2). Despite polls pointing to a Liberal victory, several Jewish candidates are running in ridings deemed too close to call. On today's show, we're zooming into a few of those ridings, to take a better look at what the issues are on the ground. In Mount Royal, incumbent Anthony Housefather has been fending off attacks about his party's perceived anti-Israel stance from new challenger Neil Oberman; in Toronto–St. Paul's, Conservative Don Stewart won a tight by-election less than a year ago, but may lose if the longtime Liberal stronghold returns red. To talk about those ridings and others—including races to watch in Winnipeg, York Centre, Outremont, Davenport, Thornhill, Eglinton-Lawrence, Toronto Centre and elsewhere—we'll hear from two reporters with The CJN. Joel Ceausu is our Montreal correspondent, and Jonathan Rothman has been reporting from Toronto. Both join The CJN Daily for an election-day preview of what are the issues at stake. Related links The CJN's Jonathan Rothman takes the temperature of Jewish voters across Canada ahead of the April 28 federal election. The CJN's Joel Ceausu reports from the riding of Mount Royal where incumbent Anthony Housefather faces off against Neil Oberman for the Conservatives. Lila Sarick reports on York Centre, in The CJN. Phoebe Maltz-Bovy on why she voted Liberal, in The CJN. What's at stake in Winnipeg, in The CJN. Eight years of pushing fossil fuel taxes for climate action, but now, a seismic shift: the Prime Minister announced a suspension of the carbon tax for home heating oil for three years. This handed opposition leader Pierre Poilievre a prime moment to grill him in yesterday's Question Period. The move gives a leg up to one region, namely Atlantic Canada, where 40% of households rely on heating oil. Compare that to Ontario, where only 2% do. Predictably, other provinces like Ontario and Saskatchewan are now voicing their desire for similar exemptions for other fuels like propane and natural gas. Premier Moe said yesterday that if a deal isn't reached to exempt all forms of home heating from the carbon tax before winter hits, "Sask Energy will stop collecting and submitting the carbon tax on natural gas." So how does this play out? If exemptions aren't given, will provinces go rogue? And is this the start of the end for Trudeau's carbon tax? The move will be implemented starting next Fall. According to Ontario's Minister of Health this will make it so that an additional 130,000 mammograms are completed in the province on an annual basis. WHY AN ONTARIO MUNICIPALITY IS CALLING ON OTTAWA TO DO ITS PART TO ADDRESS AUTO THEFT 12:45-1 PM Marissa Lennox  is joined by Jeff Knoll, Oakville Councillor for Ward 5 and chair of the Halton Police Board as well as Bryan Gast, VP, Investigative Services  of Équité Association. The Town of Oakville is calling on Ottawa to crack down on auto theft both locally and at the national level. On Oct 23rd, City Council unanimously voted in favour of endorsing a motion by Ontario's Big City Mayors to call on the feds to put more funding into the CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) for inspections of shipping containers at Canadian ports since that is where organized crime ships out stolen cars to the world. They also want to see Ottawa implement a law that would require auto manufacturers to have anti-theft technologies in all new models of vehicles. The Insurance Bureau of Canada explained that auto theft claims for the region of Halton shot up by 200 per cent between 2018 and 2022. Earlier this month, The Port of Montreal received $150 million in funding from Ottawa to expand a container terminal project. The political, professional, and cultural implications of using cannabinoids remain controversial despite its increased prevalence over the last 20 years. The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine established a working group in November 2020 to review the evidence and knowledge gaps around cannabis use in the perioperative period and develop clinical recommendations for the management of patients using cannabis in this setting.   Authors Shalini Shah, MD, MBA, and Hance Clarke, MD, FRCPC, PhD, joined RAPM Editor-in-Chief Brian Sites, MD, to discuss committee's findings, which were published in the article “ASRA Pain Medicine consensus guidelines on the management of the perioperative patient on cannabis and cannabinoids” in January 2023 (https://rapm.bmj.com/content/48/3/97).   The committee used a Delphi method with > 75% consensus to answer nine clinical questions. The members concluded that all surgical patients should be screened for cannabinoid use prior to surgery, heavy users be counseled on the negative effects on postoperative pain control, and surgery be postponed for patients who present with acute cannabis intoxication. They also advised that pregnant patients be educated on the risks of maternal cannabis on the fetus/neonate.   Dr. Shalini Shah is a professor and vice chair for the department of anesthesiology and director of perioperative services at the University of California at Irvine School of Medicine. She completed her residency in anesthesiology from Cornell University and a combined fellowship in adult and pediatric chronic pain at Harvard Medical School. She is the founder of the Pediatric Pain Program at UC Irvine and has previously served as associate program director for the pain medicine fellowship. Dr. Shah is the recipient of the ASRA Pain Medicine Chronic Pain Research Grant Award in 2017 for her landmark work in onabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX®) use in pediatric migraine pain.   Dr. Hance Clarke is the director of pain services and the pain research unit at the Toronto General Hospital in Toronto, Canada. He is the knowledge translation chair for the University of Toronto Centre for the Study of Pain and an associate professor in the department of anesthesiology and pain medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Clarke has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and has been invited to speak on pain control, cannabis, and the opioid crisis to the House of Commons in Ottawa, Canada, and elsewhere around the world.   *The purpose of this podcast is to educate and to inform. TUNE INTO THE TOWN: FORD GOVERNMENT SETTING UP WORKING GROUP TO DEAL WITH AG REPORT 12:00-12:30 Marissa Lennox is joined by Lisa Raitt, former deputy leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Glenn De Baeremaeker, a former Toronto City Councillor and Deputy Mayor and George Smitherman, former Ontario Liberal MPP for Toronto Centre who also served as a health minister and deputy Premier. Meanwhile, it's Tuesday, and we're kicking things off with our assembly of Recovering Politicians and a lot has happened since we last spoke with them, none more conspicuous than the lingering Greenbelt issue, which doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. The very latest is an announcement by the Ford government to establish a working group to deliver a quote “comprehensive response to the report” – a top priority for the government. But what's the actual deal here? Is this just a sideshow to divert attention from the fact that they're resolutely treading the path toward development – the result is the same. We'll also delve into fresh numbers from Angus Reid: Trudeau's crew is trailing Pierre Poilievre's opposition by a seven-point gap. And we're halfway home in this federal election cycle. So, how much weight should we give this? And what do you think about Pierre Poilievre's new look? Is he beginning to resonate with you personally? CANADA'S INFLATION RATE UP AGAIN 12:30-12:45 pm Marissa Lennox is now joined by Moshe Lander, Senior Lecturer of Economics at Concordia University in Montreal. Let's shift our attention to the economy for a moment. Canada's inflation rate climbed to 3.3 percent come July. It's a drop from the peak of 8.1 percent we saw last summer, but it's a step up from the 2.8 percent just last month. So what's the key takeaway from these numbers? Let's bring in Moshe Lander, Senior Lecturer of Economics at Concordia University in Montreal. SOME TORONTO TENANTS ARE RENT STRIKING 12:45 to 1 pm Marissa Lennox is now joined by Khalil, a resident at Thorncliffe Park Drive and an organizer of Thorncliffe Park Tenants and Adnan Subzwari, Associate with Mills and Mills LLP. Tenants in a Thorncliff Park apartment complex, situated just North of East York in Toronto, have taken a stand by refusing to pay rent. Their protest stems from rental increases of nearly 10 percent over the past two years. The rent strike has been going on for four months now, and is the second in Toronto spurred on by above-guideline rent increases. One of the residents of the three-building apartment complex, who lives there with his family, Khalil Aldroubi, joined us to discuss.

How could one believed to be so evil have his experience in incarceration softened? Why was the reason shrouded in secrecy? Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is undergoing a review of their decision but, as a criminologist tells us, Canadian law does not say we should hold our worst offenders indefinitely in maximum security because they are notorious to us.
