As you may have heard, there are changes coming to your blue bin starting in January, and if you're confused about what that means when you put the bin out on the curb in 2025, you're not alone. You probably want to know what's going on, and how you should react, so due to popular demand, this podcast will ask all the questions about blue box changes you wanted to know, and some of the ones you didn't. Guelph has a history of making history when it comes to the blue box: We were one of the first cities to get one, and we were one of the first cities to make the transition to three streams of waste, and we were one of the first to make the transition to the new bin system. What's next is the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, which is moving the responsibility of collecting recyclables to the producers of those materials. Starting on January 1, 2025, Waste Management Corporation of Canada (WM) will be collecting residential recycling and providing related customer service in Guelph. As you will hear today, you probably won't notice a lot of change to start, but 2025 will be a transition year for not only who collects your blue bin, but what you will be able to put inside it and who else might now get service as WM takes over for the City of Guelph. To understand all this, we're joined by Cameron Walsh, the Division Manager of Solid Waste at the City of Guelph, who will tell you what happens on January 2 when you put your recyclables out on the curb. He will also talk about the process the City has been undertaking to facilitate these changes, what will happen over the course of 2025, the ongoing review of collection downtown, and the impacts on the City's fiscal bottom line. Also, what will the future of waste collection in Guelph look like after 2025? So let's dig into the blue box on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can learn more about the changes coming to the collection of recyclables next year at guelph.ca/waste, where you can also find links to the Solid Waste Master Plan, and other info. Also, if you have any questions, send emails directly to waste [at] guelph.ca. Post-military career in manufacturing: Find out what it’s like (E198)

Welcome back! This is the second installment in our Career Field series podcasts. In our first episode (Episode 192), we featured three Cameron-Brooks alumni who explained their careers within the Engineering Management Career field. In this episode, we invited two of our alumni who launched their careers within Manufacturing. After listening to them, you'll have a better understanding where a post-military career in manufacturing can take your career. Michael Warwick is a former Army Infantry/AG officer. He attended the August 2017 Career Conference and started his career at Oldcastle Building Envelope, which creates glass products for commercial and residential buildings. He spent 5 years at that company, becoming the Plant Manager of his facility before being promoted to General Manager, covering Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. In that role, he managed all aspects of the business, from production to sales and business development functions. This allowed him to pull different levers to positively affect the profit and loss (P&L) of the overall business. In 2023, he moved to American Bath Group (ABG), a company that produces a myriad of different products that are installed in bathrooms. As a Division Manager, he manages and oversees two different companies within ABG, Swan and Florestone. In this role, he oversees both lines of business, from production, distribution, branding and marketing to new product development. Brandon Slocum is a former Army Armor officer. He attended the January 2018 Career Conference. He launched his career at Pactiv Evergreen. In the first few years of his career, he watched Pactiv move from a privately held to a publicly traded company. He started as an Operations Unit Manager, managing different teams and lines of product production. From there, he spent some time as an Operations Talent Manager on the Training and Development team, where he traveled to different Pactiv facilities throughout the country to standardize practices across the companies. For the last 4+ years, he's served as a Plant Manager in two different locations. He started as the Plant Manager in their Chicago facility, leading 275 team members in making packaging material for different high-volume restaurants. Currently, he is leading the Temple, TX facility, leading 550 team members, managing the entire South/Southwest of consumer products for Hefty and Reynolds, as well as products for Costco, Walmart, and Sam's Clubs. In this episode, Michael and Brandon answer three key questions: what exactly is manufacturing? What are the common misconceptions people have about starting a career in manufacturing? What are the key competencies that someone must possess to lead a successful post-military career in manufacturing? I think you'll find Michael and Brandon's experiences encouraging and exciting. The interesting thing is when both of these leaders attended the Cameron-Brooks Career Conference, they interviewed with around 10-12 different companies within different industries and across different career fields, including manufacturing. In doing so, they were able to assess different opportunities to find the best opportunity among many. When Michael chose Oldcastle and Brandon chose Pactiv, they made a decision that launched their career with the best fit, and they've never looked back. If you are interested in doing that type of career search, reach out to me directly. ANDY CROWE ● BILL YATES ● NICK WALKER ● DAVID GIBSON NICK WALKER: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. It's a chance for us to get together every couple of weeks and have a conversation about what matters to you as a professional project manager. We'll cover subjects such as project management certification, doing the job of project management, and get inside the brains of some of the leaders in the industry and hear their stories. I'm your host, Nick Walker. And with me are our resident experts, Andy Crowe and Bill Yates. They are project managers who mentor other project managers and those working toward that title. Andy and Bill, a lot to look forward to today. Andy, we've had some amazing guests lately. ANDY CROWE: We really have. And I think today's going to continue that trend, Nick. We're excited to have Dave Gibson in the studio. NICK WALKER: Well, let's get right to our guest. I know we've got a lot to cover. David Gibson is the Vice President and Division Manager of McKean Defense Group in Washington, D.C. He guides, mentors, coaches, and develops program managers. His experience includes strategic planning, customer engagement, and business development, and much more. Among other projects, he was the program manager for the Pentagon's MRAP, M-R-A-P, the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected military vehicle. David, welcome to Manage This. DAVID GIBSON: Thank you. I'm glad to be here. NICK WALKER: We really are anxious to talk with you about this program that you were involved in. And even though it's been a while, it's such an involved program. It was a major part of your life; wasn't it. DAVID GIBSON: It was. It was a wonderful seven years. It was a hard seven years. But it was very rewarding, probably the highlight of a career. NICK WALKER: It's nice to see that you've come out on the other side intact. DAVID GIBSON: Thank you, thank you. NICK WALKER: So David, what was your role in this project, your specific portion? DAVID GIBSON: Yeah, so on a program like this, you know, obviously the government has the lead role; right? And the government, it's an inherently governmental contract. They're managing it. But I was on a team that was sort of a staff augmentation. There's areas we can help; there's areas where we can't help. You know, we can't commit the government to dollars. You know, so while I'm talking about the program today from an overall perspective, my role was on the contractor side, in support of the government's efforts. And when I started initially on the program, I was a project officer. I came up through the ranks. I became the deputy program manager and then eventually the program manager. I sat in the program manager, on the contractor side, seat for about five years of the seven. Or actually it was a little bit less than that. It was probably closer to four. And then on the government side, you know, the first government program manager was a gentleman named Paul Mann. Second one was Dave Hansen. And Dave and I came into the program manager, respective program manager positions about the same time. He was a couple months after I was. Such a rewarding experience to work with Dave. Dave was a huge inspiration to me. And, you know, we've continued to keep in touch. We're off doing our own things now. He's managing another Marine Corps program. I'm back working with the Navy at McKean Defense. And it's – but, you know, it's mutually supportive. NICK WALKER: Tell us a little bit about how this all started. Give us a little background. DAVID GIBSON: Okay. So if you remember back in 2006, that timeframe, U.S. forces were in Iraq and Afghanistan. And we would see on the nightly news the Humvees that were being destroyed by IEDs, and the service members that were dying or being disfigured because of it. BILL YATES: And, Dave, what's an IED? Just explain that. DAVID GIBSON: An IED is an improvised explosive device. ...

Whisper Camel-Means shares her expertise on the pressing need to protect US wildlife ecosystems, now imperiled at an alarming rate. She offers an Indigenous perspective on the human-induced threats to our living relatives, from habitat loss to climate change. Tune in to learn how we can restore habitats, ensure the survival of endangered species, and honor the profound connection between Indigenous peoples and nature. As of February 2023, the Center for Biological Diversity stated that 40% of U.S. wildlife and ecosystems are imperiled. A new report on the status of U.S. wildlife conservation revealed that 40% of animals, 34% of plants and 40% of ecosystems nationwide are at risk. Indigenous peoples have always understood our interdependence with Nature, with flora and fauna and our rightful place as a mere part of the whole, living ecosystem. Our discussion today is on Indigenous Stewardship with Whisper Camel-Means, wildlife biologist and enrolled member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation [https://csktribes.org/] in Western Montana. In short order, Western society has decimated much of life on this planet. Conservation scientist David Wilcove estimates that there are 14,000 to 35,000 endangered species of flora and fauna in the United States alone; or roughly 7 to 18 percent of U.S. flora and fauna. Today wildlife on Turtle Island face multiple threats including: habitat loss, climate change, disease, pollution, invasive species and exploitation, the majority of which is human-induced. How might we change our behaviors to create healthy, balanced ecosystems in which all our living relatives can thrive and prosper in their sacred and unique ways? What do we owe to the Deer, the Elk, the Moose, the Black Bear, the Grizzly Bear, Otter, Wolverine, Bat, Turtle, Bison, Peregrine Falcon, Bighorn Sheep, Trumpeter Swan and the Gray Wolf to name only a precious few? How can we help restore the habitats and species who face extinction and ensure their presence for future generations? Mike Pompei grew up in a big Italian family just outside of Buffalo NY. His family was very musical and it seemed to rub off on Mike, who currently plays wineries and breweries throughout Sacramento. At the age of 12, just as his generation of pop music was becoming a priority, the Pompei family moved to the sunny enviorns of Sacramento, California. Following in his older brother's footsteps, Mike eventually went on to work at Tower Records Watt Avenue where Ken Sockolov was the Store Manager. Alternating between working at Tower Records locations and Tower Posters, Mike found his niche. Running the Tower Posters store on the 3rd floor of the Westwood (L.A.) location, Mike received a call one day from Dick Harris, the Division Manager for Posters. Told to “shut it all down” and ship the posters product back to Sacramento, Mike wasn't told what his future was. It was then that Westwood Store Manager Chris Hopson told Mike to stay and work with him. When Chris Hopson left Westwood to start up Tower Advertising in Sacramento he took Pompei with him, where Mike worked for 18 years. On this episode Mike Pompei tells us the various roles he assumed in Tower Advertising, the stress of meeting deadlines, dealing with newspapers and radio stations, his travels visiting stores and media markets, meeting face to face with record label brass at NARM and a hilarous enccounter with a member of Aerosmith at one of the Tower Annual Conferences.

Hello friends! City of Austin Music and Entertainment Division Manager, Erica Shamaly is my guest for episode 1269! The ATX Music and Entertainment Division is the only one of it's kind in the world and Erica is here to tell us all about it. If you live in Austin, you've been reading about "The Live Music Event Fund Program" offering $5K-$10K grants to Austin professional musicians, bands, and independent promoters to fund awarded projects. The deadline is May 16th, so you'll want to start looking into it now. Go to atxmusic.org for more information on how to apply and to find out more about Austin's music and entertainment division. Erica and I have a great conversation about the educational components of "The Live Music Event Fund Program", the role of the music office in the city and the programs they offer, adapting the changing music industry and economy, Austin's unique music business infrastructure and much more. I learned a lot from Erica. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Rehearse at Space ATX! If you feel so inclined. Venmo: www.venmo.com/John-Goudie-1  Paypal: paypal.me/johnnygoudie
