Todd Haug & Chris Boggess of 3 Floyds Brewing & I have a conversation about how they coped with 2020, their 1st brews, how they got into the world of Craft Beer, the soundtrack of their youth, their 1st shows, the 1st Metal Brewery, the surge of new Metal themed breweries, Collaborating with bands, Dark Lord Day & their hangover cures. Throughout this chat, Todd was drinking Dark Matter Coffee's "Vanilla Suburbs", Chris was drinking Devils Backbone Brewing Company's Lager & I was enjoying Beauregard Brasserie Distillerie‘s “Impériale Macadam”! This Imperial Stout was brewed with Macadamia Nuts & Madagascar Vanilla & was aged in Bourbon barrels. It poured out with a pitch black veil, slapped a boozy bourbon nose, smashed an ultra sweet, sticky, nutty & vanilla booze filled finish. It clocked in with a 11.1% ABV. For Memorial Day we thank all the service men and women that have given their lives so we have freedom in this country. We also break down Warren and Stryker's experience at Dark Lord Day 2019.
No taglines allowed. Michael gives a brag upon a lager, but Jeremy brings the cake (?), recalling his experience at Dark Lord Day. He casually mentions a few sweet brews he had and reveals the varient he nabbed. We then move into the final installment of Watch the Thrones, a segment Michael forgot all about. Bidding an old friend farewell, we move onto the FDR, where we have the third brew in our 2nd Spring Sampler Series. We nod to the jabronis, talk about Dyer, then recall party Thursdays of yore... all while enjoying a brew. Something about a ghost.Beer in this episode: Stone Ghost Hammer IPACheers!
Lots of fun stuff here with Evan, Ryan, and Kyle talking first about the now defunct Valiant Brewing Co. and their Russian mega stout, Marshmallow Quantarium. Seemed like a successful brewery but closed its doors and left a big wake behind it with this white whale which delivered a big vanilla bomb of a stout with a fullness and sweetness like many of the best out there. So why do some good breweries fail? We also discuss the reasons collaboration can build a brewery. Shout outs to New Glarus Brewing and keeping it nostalgic when we travel to Wisconsin, the soon to open Hop Station in Mishawaka, IN, and Mook Meadery, whom we still are looking for samples from. Ryan also touches on his brief trip up to this years Dark Lord Day at Three Floyds Brewery in Munster, IN. Cheers from P+P!!
The That's So Region panel talks about the Region craft beer holiday of Dark Lord Day, how Steak 'n Shake finds itself in sudden financial peril, if 41,000 pounds of amber honey is too much to spill onto the Borman Expressway and whether the Game of Thrones series finale was metal enough. Tune in to find out if there's any mention of Grindhouse Cafe's bourbon barrel-aged iced coffee. To hear more That's So Region podcasts, subscribe on iTunes or SoundCloud. Follow Joseph S. This week's episode featured artist is Chicago's own Dan Grzeca (Jet-sah). Learn about his storied career of making unique gig posters for some of the greatest musicians and bands in the country. Through his love of music and his hometown he started doing posters for 3 Floyd's legendary beer and their annual celebration of Dark Lord Day. Each story is an adventure that leads us to his current project of creating mini pieces of art for the labels at Hop Butcher. An easy going and insightful guy, Dan was a pleasure to speak with and someone we look forward to meeting in 3-D in the future. You don't want to miss this one.
Cheers! This week Kyle and Matthew sit down with Jarrod Bruner and Carlos Huizar to talk about the cause of and solution to all of life’s problems: beer. This week's guest is an artist and commercial screenprinter here in Chicago. We’ve worked with him numerous times through GBH making posters and hosting workshop events. He’s well-known but depending on how you discovered his work, you know him for very different reasons. Myself, I knew him as the guy who did the Dark Lord Day posters, and Apocalypse Cow from Three Floyds. For others, he’s an artist working with bands like the Alabama Shakes. And most recently he took his first gig with a brewery making illustrations for the new cans coming out of Chicago’s Hop Butcher for the World. He’s also a small business entrepreneur, a dad of two great kids, and he works to balance all that with his creative ambitions, which are so similar to my own. So it was a great conversation, and I’m glad to share it with you all.
In Ep. 19, Michael is first joined by BIllie Clifton. Originally an herb farmer, Clifton began growing hops with the intent to eventually open a brewery in the Shenandoah Rivery Valley in Virginia. After, Nick Floyd discusses the history of Three Floyds, Dark Lord Day, and gives his picks for the most underrated Indiana breweries. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/building-breweries-a-beer-podcast/support

Another Dark Lord Day approaches, so we review a vertical of 3 Floyds’ signature special release with a little help from the Chicago Tribune’s beer columnist Josh Noel. Should you ever age a Dark Lord? Is it really just a decent beer? Are the variants worth it? The answers will probably not shock you. But we do our best to contribute to the conversation by talking about the changes to the fest itself, this year’s variants, and 3 Floyds’ place in local beer culture. There’s also some Goose Island talk, thoughts on the next era of beer, Josh’s day of karmic realignment, and the most Indiana story ever. Jud Jud. Three Floyds Brewing has a cult-like following for its lineup of beers — but none of its brews commands a more rabid fan base than its Dark Lord Russian imperial stout. Released one day a year at the Munster, Indiana brewery, it's become a holiday for craft beer fans around the nation. Over the Barrel cohosts Ben Meyerson, Charles Berman and Rich Bird went out to the annual event, and talked a bit about the beer, and the madness of the event. Over the Barrel is a beer podcast from Sun-Times Media Local, focusing on beer, craft breweries and other interesting alcohol-related news in the Chicago area.
