It brings us a lot of joy to continue to shine a light on the amazing craft beer scene in Australia here on the pod, and the latest returning Aussie legend is Mirek from The Mill. First appearing on the podcast back in 2018, Mirek joined Cee to catch up on what's been happening for the last 5 years, the growth of the beer scene in Collingwood (a suburb of Melbourne where The Mill is based), their move into a production facility, how their brewpub has developed and the importance of their food partner, why it's key for them to deliver beer that everyone can enjoy, the state of the Aussie beer scene, a deep dive into both the Australian and New Zealand hop growing world, and their barrel program. Mirek crushed their Solana West Coast Pilsner and Haze NEIPA, while Cee cracked open a bottle of their 2018 variant of The Great Russian, a Starward barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout. This was a gem - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
Whenever the pod comes full circle, it's a beautiful thing. We first had Brendo on the pod back in Episode #29 of the original series when he ran The Public Brewery in Melbourne, Australia. When we reached out to get Dereck of Bad Shepherd back on, we were stoked to learn that Brendo had joined the team. Dereck and Brendan hung out with Cee to chat about landing their Double Choc Hazelnut Brown Ale in the LCBO in Ontario, how the Aussie beer scene has grown over the years and comparisons with Canada, they broke down the voluntary administration process that the business recently went through, how Aussie consumer brands are commoditizing and how it relates to beer, and whether there will ever be a Bad Shepherd in Canada. They got into the Double Choc Hazelnut Brown Ale, of course, and two versions of their Alkonost Russian Imperial Stout - one from 2019 (Cee) and one from 2021 (Dereck and Brendo). This was a banger, cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
For this episode of Brewstilled, I'll be recapping Apple TV's For All Mankind Episode 3 Season 4. In this episode we pick up where we left off from episode 2. We saw further developments with Margo's storyline in the Soviet Union. With the Soviet Union facing a coup, how will this change the dynamics on Happy Valley? We saw further storyline developments with Ed as he may have found a love interest with a Soviet colleague. Aledia and Kelly venture into the business world while Miles finds a new way to get money on Mars. It's all here on Brewstilled with a Russian Imperial Stout from North Coast Brewery as the beer pairing.
Bell's Brewery 35th Anniversary Expedition Stout Reserve is a Russian Imperial Stout by style. Expedition Stout is the longest brewed Imperial Stout in the US. First brewed in 1989 to be robust enough to hold up to time and travel, we couldn't think of a better beer to honor for our 35th Anniversary. This craft beer is 11.5% ABV. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell and taste.
Flying Buffalo BA German Chocolate Cake Griffin Claw Brewing is a Russian imperial Stout by style. How does one make a German Chocolate Cake? First you brew a big Russian Imperial Stout and age it for 9 months in bourbon barrels. That gives you a solid base to add the special ingredients, rich German chocolate, Tahitian vanilla, toasted coconut, and lactose milk sugar. The result is a rich, liquid cake of German style with boozy vanilla notes up front, profound chocolate throughout and a decadent sweet cessation to devour in bliss. This craft beer is 12% ABV. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.
This week I was down in Delaware, Ohio hanging with Frank Barickman who is the owner and head brewer at Restoration Brew Works. Frank and I discussed the brewery's opening in 2015, and how they survived through 2020. We also talked a lot about how breweries need to evolve in 2023 to remain successful. During the interview we drank some very tasty beers including a Pilsner featuring a new aged lager yeast that helps it finish out fast like an Ale while still maintaining a traditional lager taste. We also drank an award-winning Irish Red that they often use as a gateway beer for non-craft beer drinkers to convert them. At the end we drank a delicious Russian Imperial Stout from 2021. Beer Selection: · Sulky – German Pilsner 5.4 % · Stewart Red – Irish Red 5.9% · Cosmic Juice – American IPA 6.7% · Silverback – Russian Imperial Stout 11.5% · Eclipse Black Lager – Schwarzbier 5% You can find Restoration Brew Works on the web at https://restorationbrewworx.com/ and you can also see them on FB @rbwrx and IG at @rbworx. In this week's episode of the Craft Parenting Podcast, we go back in time to the golden age of beer and we talk about the road to prohibition in Cincinnati. This conversation was guided by a book called "Cincinnati Beer" by Michael D. Morgan, specifically the 13th chapter which is called "Why Somebody Had to Make a Law Against It". The release of this episode represents our triumphant return to Thursday night podcasting after more than a one month hiatus. For a variety of reasons, one of them predictable (Thanksgiving), one of them planned well in advance (medical procedure), and one of them an unfortunate reality in our world today (Keith had Covid), we had an extended break during the most wonderful beverage time of the year. Fortunately everyone is now healthy and so far the only lingering effects seem to be centered on Keith's olfactory system. While we wait for his sense of smell to continue its slow journey back to normal we will be relying on Andrew's sensory perceptions even more than we usually do for the foreseeable future. During a recent trip to our neighborhood Tap and Bottle, Keith found a different variation of an old favorite imperial stout and that is what we will be sharing with you this week. For this show we will be trying the Old Rasputin Barrel Aged Russian Imperial stout. They have two versions, one aged in bourbon barrels and one aged in rye whiskey barrels and the latter is the one that we will be trying. Prior to 2010 these were made in limited quantities that were only available locally in California. Fortunately for us they have increased production which allows for a broader yet still limited distribution. What did we think? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch. If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@gmail.com.

To recognize the improbable 400th episode of this show, we take it all the way back to the beginning - with a little added age. We revisit the same five local breweries from “Episode 1 - Chicago Stouts” - but this time, there are barrels involved. We take stock of all that has changed along the way and share a few memories from listeners. But there's also our Top 3 arcade cabinets, shameless Trader Joe's plugs, some babka truths, stout luge races, and a little old-fashioned Ryan rage over unwieldy beer prices. I'd buy that for a dollar. Please accept our apologies for this being delayed a week. One of us was in Disney World and forgot to set this episode up to release. This week we discuss the seasonality of beer as we taste a beer not usually consumed in the summer in a Russian Imperial Stout. This happens to be a favorite of one of the dads as we taste North Coast's Old Rasputin. As always we talk about interesting beers from the last week, some good stories, and at least one dad joke. Thank y'all so much for listening.

Left Hand Brewing Wake Up Dead Nitro is a Russian Imperial Stout by style. Super smooth trifecta of cocoa, dried fruit, & licorice flavors. To make Wake Up Dead mega-smooth, we snuck in nitrogen. This beast of a black beer emerges into a smooth companion with velvety chocolate cake aromas and the perfect trifecta of cocoa, dried fruit and licorice. Don't let the initial sweetness fool you; this beer will tumble around your taste buds before collapsing down the back of your throat with hops and some serious ABV. Next up in our short series of interviews with brewers from Boise ID, is Sean Pletcher from Clairvoyant Brewing. Our chum and co-host for these shows is beer aficionado Mark Naski, who sent us the beer samples. Clairvoyant is a great neighborhood local, and our sample is a vanilla Russian Imperial Stout that challenges the 10.2 ABV and drinks much lighter. Sean shows us the taproom and brewery in a whirlwind 360 tour, and we chat about what's drinking on tap. Cheers!
Serendipity! Kismet! Fate! Chance! Like minds! Whatever the reason, or lack thereof, this was a very special cast. The gents has the very special pleasure of welcoming celebrated author Bud Smith to the cast for this one. Author of the novel "Teenager," memoir "Work" and short story collection "Double Bird," Bud is a humorous and very real voice in American literature. He weighs in on Mikhail Bulgakov's masterpiece "The Master and Margarita," as well as Murder City Devils' "In Name and Blood" while Nick M. knocks back North Coast brewing co's "Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout." And all before noon. This is a fun one and we are so very thankful for Bud's good taste in reading The Master and Margarita and singing its praises a week or so before recording so we could invite him on the show with us. A grand time was had by all. Enjoy and thank you for listening!

In this episode Wrey, Shannon & Josh in the background flow in and out of beer and board games, specifically Star Wars X-Wing from Fantasy Flight Games and the 3 Hobbit-themed beers from Central City Brewing. The Smaug Stout: Smaug Stout (9.5% alc./vol) is styled after a classic Russian Imperial Stout, but with a subtle hint of Habanero chilies to remind you of the fire and danger awaiting Bilbo and to the Company of Dwarves in their journey to The Lonely Mountain. Pronounced notes of coffee and chocolate balanced with Northwest Hops and a touch of heat produce an exceptional imperial stout, a worthy reward for your hard-fought journey. The Gollum Precious Pils: With flavors as smooth and crafty as Gollum himself, the Gollum Pilsner (5% alc./vol) is brewed in the classic Bavarian tradition, using only the finest two-row barley, and hops from the Hallertau region of Germany. This light and golden Pilsner has a distinct hop aroma and flavour, with a dry, crisp finish.Like the One Ring which Gollum has spent his life pursuing, the “precious” pils, if your quest leads you to it, may not extend your life, but it may make your journey a little more enjoyable! The Bolg Belgian Tripel: An Orc chieftain who ruled for 150 years, Bolg seems like the kind who would drink his grog of choice and no one would tell him otherwise; however, this flavorful strong BelgianTripel(8% alc./vol) may be too refined for this otherwise gruesome character.
