We're right at the end of hop harvest season, so now's the time to bask in the seasonal glory that is fresh and wet hop beers. We expand our understanding of fresh and wet hop beers on this episode by sifting through the research while drinking five pretty incredible local beers using those straight-from-the-bines hops. Also, we have a little unfulfilled Chekov's Corgi situation; we take some responsibility for getting the Conservatory slide shut down; Ryan's got a metaphor straight from 2005; Craig's writing his new erotica about a Hop Farm; and we explain why Three Floyds is totally normal now. Pigweed and Crowhill drink and review an IPA from Three Floyds, then discuss whether the United States should pay reparations for the evils of slavery. P&C agree that the concept of reparations is sound. When you harm someone, you should try to repair the wrong that's been done. They review some of the arguments for reparations and have sympathy for many of them. The idea is not simply that the ancestors of slave owners should pay the ancestors of slaves, but that the entire system was complicit in slavery, so the entire system should pay. But who should be paid, and how much? What's the limiting principle? Should we also pay Native Americans, or the Chinese, who were abused in the creation of the railroads? Can a group be held responsible for the actions of a group at some time in the past? It's almost impossible to parse it all out and unscramble the mess. Isn't there a statute of limitations?

On the last day of Fishmas, Dustin and Logan watch the Academy Award Winning film, the Shape of Water, and discuss all the issues they have with it. They drink some Founders' Centennial IPA and Three Floyds' Dark Lord while talking about all the confusing horniness of the movie. They also dig into a holiday tradition from the Peruvian Andes that America should absolutely adopt. Thanks again for listening to another batch of fish-based nonsense. The boys will be back in the new year with a slightly new take on the show, but the same ol' brand of chaos. Happy New Year and all hail the Dry Walker!
Brendan & Mike review beers from Three Floyds & Revolution Brewing, talk subscription services, and recommend shows to binge this Winter.
Lazer Snake by Three Floyds is about as awesome as its name implies. Tune in for intense talks about chicken wings.
This week Steve tells a story about using manual focus with live view when it was too dark for his autofocus to work. It was hell. Dustin talks about video lights and we wonder if he's even a photographer anymore. We talk about some Canon, Sony, and Fuji Fast Glass stuff. Also, "They Took Our Jobs!" That's right! We have an in depth and intelligent discussion of the new Skylum software coming out, Luminar AI, that isn't just Steve trying to get Dustin to repeat a line from South Park while Dustin clearly has no idea what Steve is talking about. It's very intelligent. Also, Steve explains Dorian Grey to Dustin, kind of... Beer Talk: Dustin - Some Canned Old-Fashioned thing that doesn't even have actual whisky in it Steve - Elijah Craig and coke and then also a Munsterfest from Three Floyds because it's been a hard few weeks so stop judging me. Q&A: If a photographer hires you to second shoot but never tells you where to be to second shoot, should you just leave and drive to the area to be there on time in case they do give you an address at the last minute? If a former groom gets married a second time wearing the same clothes as when he got married a few years ago while you were shooting his wedding... do you comment and mention that it's the same clothes? Dustin talks about Tenet. Steve talks about I'm Thinking of Ending Things. They're both disappointed. Also, Dustin doesn't understand how acting works. Matt Van Wyk is Brewmaster and Co-Founder at Alesong Brewing & Blending in Eugene, Oregon. He drops some knowledge on what it takes to use barrels as the fifth ingredient in his beers. He goes from science teacher to brewing on the side to award-winning brewer. We talk a lot about family, work ethic and the relationships that sustain us. In a first, we get to talk to one of Matt's #UnsungHospitalityHeroes, Andrew Mason, who was a middle school student of his, then an assistant brewer, now a trusted confidant. Website: alesongbrewing.com Facebook: /alesongbrewing Instagram: @alesongmatt @alesongbrewing Twitter: @alesongmatt @alesongbrewing Where were you born / raised? Wilton, Iowa First job in the industry? When, where, how old? 2001, Glen Ellyn Brewing Company. I was 28. I had been volunteering there for two years, off and on Proudest moment of your career? It has to be the 2006 World Beer Cup awards when I earned silver behind Rodenbach Crand Cru and ahead of Dogfish Head's Festina Lente. I mumbled something unintelligible to both Rudi and Sam. I'm still star struck after 20 years in the industry. Two things most people don't know about you? 1) I have two degrees in teaching and spent 6 years in education. 2) I spent much of my childhood watching Julia Child, Jaques Pepin, and Martin Yan on PBS and I think it affected my eating habits and my brewing philosophy. Food and/or drinks staples in your house? Beer, wine and Bourbon are always available, naturally. Eggs are eaten in mass quantities in my household. Words to live by? "Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life." and "be kind to others" Tell us about one of your #UnsungHospitalityHeroes Andrew Mason, most recently of Solemn Oath Brewing, previously at Three Floyds Brewing and prior to that, my assistant brewer at Flossmoor Station from 2005-2009. Andrew was a student in my Middle School science class and later in a HS Astronomy class. We became close with he and his family when a science fair project went awry in 1997 and it led to me homebrewing with his dad. He contacted me after college looking for a job in the industry and I had an open position. He learned professional brewing with me and that led to him later being the production manager at both Three Floyds and Solemn Oath. Not only is he a great brewer but he's one heck of a grillmaster. His family in the early days, and Andrew now, are known to host 'meat parties'. To me, the Mason's were foodies before it was cool to be a foodie. Matt Founded Alesong Brewing and Blending along with Brian and Doug Coombs in 2016. Alesong is a producer of artisan barrel aged beer and is located in wine country of the Southern Willamette valley of Oregon. Prior to founding Alesong, Matt did stints at Oregon's Oakshire Brewing and several breweries in the Chicagoland area, including Flossmoor Station Brewery where he earned Small Brewpub Brewer of the year at the 2006 at the Great American Beer Fest. When not dabbling with barrels he chases after his wife Jenni and two kids, Nick and Ella in the Mountains and Coastal region of Oregon.

Craft Brew News 020819Canada’s Collective Arts Brewing to Enter Cannabis MarketCanada’s Collective Arts Brewing is venturing into the cannabis sector. The Hamilton, Ontario-based craft brewery, located about 50 miles from the New York border, has established a sister company called Collective Project Limited that will develop and sell cannabis-infused beverages. In a conversation with Brewbound, CEO and co-founder Matt Johnston said the new line of THC- and CBD-infused beverages would be “artisanal” in nature, and could include non-alcoholic beer, as well as cold brew coffee or tea.The company is also planning to make a multi-million dollar investment on dealcoholization equipment, which will be used to produce non-alcoholic beer infused with THC and CBD, Johnston said.Collective Arts joins a growing list of beer manufacturers that have already invested in the cannabis space. Large beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (Tilray), Constellation Brands (Canopy Growth) and Molson Coors (Hexo) have each struck partnerships with Canadian cannabis companies. Other U.S. beer manufacturers, including Flying Dog, and Heineken-owned Lagunitas have experimented or explored the possibility of THC- and CBD-infused beverages. Craft Brew Alliance is also eying the sector.Bell’s Brewery to Cease Beer Shipments to VirginiaVirginia may be for lovers, but it won’t be a place where drinkers can purchase Bell’s beer for much longer.Bell’s Brewery founder Larry Bell notified the company’s seven Virginia wholesalers on Friday that the Michigan craft brewery would cease shipments to the state after filling final orders.Bell told Brewbound. “We are not taking any new orders from them at this point,” “Those were difficult calls to make,” he added. “It feels like the government shutdown. Here’s people that aren’t getting a paycheck because of somebody else’s dispute. But the fact of the matter is, with Virginia law, that if we stay in the market, we could be exposing ourselves to legal risk that could be financially devastating.”Bell declined to explain further, citing ongoing legal proceedings before the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC). However, at the center of his company’s retraction from the state is a dispute over the attempted sale of Bell’s distribution rights to a subsidiary of the Reyes Beverage Group.Bell added that his company’s overall shipments grew 2.7 percent in 2018, driven by distribution expansion and organic growth in the company’s home markets. In 2017, Bell’s ranked as the seventh largest craft brewery in the U.S., producing about 463,808 barrels of beer, according to trade group the Brewers Association.Massachusetts Breweries Strike Strategic PartnershipMassachusetts’ Mercury Brewing and Newburyport Brewing today announced a strategic partnership that will give the latter company access to brewing capacity, via a contract arrangement, as well as various sales, marketing, and administrative resources.Speaking to Brewbound, Rob Martin, owner of Mercury Brewing, which produces beers under the Ipswich Ale Brewery label, confirmed that his company had not taken an ownership stake in Newburyport.Instead, Newburyport worked out an agreement with Mercury Brewing that includes payment for brewing, as well as sales, marketing and administrative services. In the process of partnering up, Newburyport will close its existing production facility as it prepares to downsize brewing operations and open a “destination brewery” outfitted with a small-batch, 7-barrel system.Newburyport currently operates on a 20-barrel brewing system and supplements its in-house production with beer brewed under contract at Isle Brewers Guild in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.Mercury Brewing currently makes beer for about 20 different companies, Martin said, and its facility has the capacity to produce as much as 45,000 barrels annually. The addition of Newburyport’s contract business will take Mercury to roughly 90 percent capacity utilization, Martin said.ZX Ventures Fully Acquires RateBeerZX Ventures, Anheuser-Busch InBev’s venture capital arm, has acquired the remaining portion of beer ratings website RateBeer.com that it did not already own.ZX Venture’s full purchase of RateBeer comes after an initial investment was made in October 2016 and disclosed eight months ago.According to a ZX Ventures spokesperson, RateBeer will continue to “operate as an independent entity,” and its “rating system will remain unchanged.”In a statement, ZX Ventures said its acquisition of RateBeer will lead to the expansion of the brand into “new areas,” such as “an affiliate marketplace pilot program in Australia” and further upgrades to the platform’s user experience. The initial round of investment led to backlash from RateBeer users as well as well-known craft brewers such as Dogfish Head and Karl Strauss, among others, who questioned the unbiased nature of the site and asked for their ratings to be removed..News of the investment also comes a week after RateBeer announced its annual list of the “Top 100 Brewers,” which was topped by Vermont’s Hill Farmstead. The rest of the top 10, in descending order, included Russian River Brewing, Trillium Brewing Company, Cigar City, Tree House Brewing, AleSmith, Toppling Goliath, Three Floyds, New Glarus and Side Project.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. This week, it's a visit to Kuma's Corner (2900 W. Belmont), which is basically Ground Zero for Chicago's 21st century burger Renaissance. My guest is Kuma's Creative Director David Bacso, who came to the podcast armed with two burgers: The Minsk (January, 2018 Burger of the Month) - 10oz Beef Patty (or choice of protein), Pastrami, Swiss Cheese, Sauerkraut, Brown Mustard, Sweet Gherkin. "It's like a Reuben." The Neurosis - Cheddar, Swiss, Caramelized Onions, Sauteed Mushrooms, Horseradish Mayo, Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion And over the course of this Boost Mobile-sponsored episode, we talk about: The Cannibal Corpse burger. I was too late for that one, but I'm dying to try it. The best-selling Kuma's burger? No surprise there. Does anyone remember laughter? The Slayer burger. Anger is a real ingredient. Kuma's was ahead of the curve on craft beer like Lagunitas and Three Floyds. The size of the Kuma's burgers: "I need to work out to lift this burger." It's more metal to have a burger cooked medium rare. If you don't finish your burger, you're "bitching out." Is Kuma's a date restaurant? After eating at Kuma's I want to be left alone my underpants. How Kuma's found the perfect address (666 W. Diversey). David has the perfect gig: "I get to work with some of my idols." The infamous "Ghost" burger, complete with communion wafers. The also-infamous Rod Blagojevich burger. "Where do you find inspiration?" "Weed." Working with big-name bands: "There's a mutual respect which is fucking mind-blowing." Kuma's experience after being showcased on Food Network. Restaurant expansion? Deliberate and mindful? David's favorite Kuma's burger. Hint: He likes the "spicy shit." Impressions from Guy Fieri's visit? Eating the chips is a courtesy.

We bribed yet another guest to meet with us out in public. We have Hutch from The Pint Cycle who donated precious minutes of his life that he's desperately wishes he could get back.We talk Indiana beer and wine, Adam's mom's, and Adam again discusses the ocean. In the vein of repetition, we do once again mention Scarlet Lane. Pete admits their beer he has had recently seems to have greatly improved (to his mind) and he ups his prior rating to a double solid! There is also a mention of Three Floyds and Munster, Indiana. Hutch also requested a special shout-out to The Pint Cycle's pit crew, LoKe Bicycles. The keep his cycle in tip-top shape for touring around Fishers and qualifying for the Olympics. We're looking to recruit a crew to help us pedal The Pint Cycle down the streets of Fishers to be looked upon in envy by those passing by.

This week's guest is an artist and commercial screenprinter here in Chicago. We’ve worked with him numerous times through GBH making posters and hosting workshop events. He’s well-known but depending on how you discovered his work, you know him for very different reasons. Myself, I knew him as the guy who did the Dark Lord Day posters, and Apocalypse Cow from Three Floyds. For others, he’s an artist working with bands like the Alabama Shakes. And most recently he took his first gig with a brewery making illustrations for the new cans coming out of Chicago’s Hop Butcher for the World. He’s also a small business entrepreneur, a dad of two great kids, and he works to balance all that with his creative ambitions, which are so similar to my own. So it was a great conversation, and I’m glad to share it with you all.
Episode #71 where we start off with a few Stone beers from the 20th Anniversary IPAs then switch over to some Three Floyds, Darkness, and MILF. Yeah, that's a heavy night of killer beers! We spend a good amount of time messing with Mike, Dustin, and Wagner and yes we are offensive! Why wouldn't we be? Listen up and you may win a free beer or 2 on our Facebook page this week!
We finally get back into the studio and bring in papa Larry to drink a few beer. Sure our engineer screwed up a bit, but Larry is from New Jersey and he is a NYGiants fan folks! We tackle beers from Three Floyds, Sam Adams, Victory, Platform, Neshaminy Creek, Atwater, and Stone. So tons a great beers and some complete bullshit. Thanks for listening in you beer drinking shits!
Tonight we tackle 9 beers from Three Floyds Brewing and believe me they are worth the hype! Great beers and a couple we gave a bit of hell to. We also talk a bit of RocketFire softball and man are we excited about this season.
In Ep. 19, Michael is first joined by BIllie Clifton. Originally an herb farmer, Clifton began growing hops with the intent to eventually open a brewery in the Shenandoah Rivery Valley in Virginia. After, Nick Floyd discusses the history of Three Floyds, Dark Lord Day, and gives his picks for the most underrated Indiana breweries. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/building-breweries-a-beer-podcast/support
Matt and Paul break out some tasty brews and talk about all things, like the weather, and is a hot dog a sandwich?
Episode 10 of Two Brews Midwest! The first of many milestones to come! Paul Covert returns to the show with some fine brews from Ohio and Michigan. Matt brings a couple Indiana brews to this tenth episode. They also breakout some bonus beer from Vermont!
Everyone loves a sequel! We drink 6 more double imperial pale ales in this episode, reaching new levels of palate destruction and inebriation. We jump in our own Mystery Machine and try to solve the hop secrets in some of these brews, Ryan unleashes a little Three Floyds rage, and Craig reveals to us all that he is, indeed, a God. (Because we’re busy celebrating Chicago Craft Beer Week, this episode was recorded two months ago. Enjoy!)
We give wheat a chance with six different Chicago-area breweries that feature warmer-weather friendly wheat! There are a variety of styles, an enlightening history of wheat, and even some lemon bars made with Off Color’s Troublesome. We also ruminate on the novelty-shirt-friendly question, “What Would Jesus Drink?” (It’s probably Three Floyds.) This episode features music from Chicago’s own Oblivion, because that’s what Ryan wants.
On today's THE FOOD SEEN, Adam Dulye is the chef behind San Francisco bars Monk's Kettle and The Abbot's Cellar. There he serves menus of food & beverage pairings, exalting beer as the drink of choice. Growing up in Kansas City, a place that celebrates burnt ends, Adam's first beer was not a Budweiser, but instead a local Boulevard Wheat. From party balls in culinary school, Guinness for après-ski on the slopes of Aspen, to his hop exposure in Portland OR, beer had yet to have a place at the table. Large mass production of “big beer” watered down the market for craft brews, but it was on top of a mountain in Vale in the middle of winter, while serving a venison dish, and opportunely sipping a Steamworks Brewing Steam Engine Lager, that snowballed everything. This started a series of beer dinners, which lead Adam working with The Great American Beer Festival, the single largest beer event in the country, helping them put together a tasting event at the Farm to Table Pavilion which pairs a chef with a brewery, Logsdon Farmhouse Ales Seizoen Bretta with duck confit cherry macaroons, Three Floyds hoppy beers with cuttlefish pasta. He also coordinates SAVOR an American Craft Beer and Food Experience, an upcoming festival to be held in Washington DC, which highlights beer and food pairings past chocolate with stout and mussels with Belgian wit. Plus, who doesn't need a drink on TAX DAY? This program was sponsored by GreatBrewers.com. “I can't remember a winemaker ever telling me how they make a wine – but I remember every brewer explaining how they make their beer.” [33:00] –Adam Dulye on The Food Seen

Episode 54. I really thought the computer was gonna eat this episode. It would become "the lost episode". People would speak of it in hushed, reverent voices. Now, just regular ol' voices. In this episode, Darion brought us beers he picked up on his road trip to Michigan. We hit Iowa, we hit Indiana, and we hit the beautiful mitten that is Michigan. We talk about the time Darion witnessed a murder. We discover that Connor is a jackass on the road, and Mark is a little bitch. We go through our spam folders. And we have a good beer night courtesy of Three Floyds, New Holland and Big Grove. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/three-beers-later/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast? Welcome back to a couple of friends of the pods...Michael Bruntz and Mike Schaefer. One doesn't talk. One didn't drink that one time. This should be fun. In this episode, we learn what it's like to go on the road with the 247 crew. It involves a portal and alcohol. Bruntz love totchos but hates Ramen seasoning. And Schaefer might've won the lottery (he'll never know). All while drinking beers from Three Floyds and Zipline.
