In this episode, we dive deep into the unsettling and complex case of William Beggs, infamously known as the Limbs in the Loch killer. We explore his seemingly normal life, marked by political involvement and a visit to Downing Street, juxtaposed with a dark pattern of escalating violence. The episode begins with Beggs's childhood in Northern Ireland, where he was raised in a right-wing political environment, contrasting sharply with his education at a Quaker school emphasizing peace and tolerance. We discuss his early confrontations with the Ulster Volunteer Force and his subsequent move to England, where he joined the Federation of Conservative Students but soon displayed violent behaviors targeting men in gay clubs. The murder of Barry Oldham in 1987 marks a significant turning point, leading to Beggs's brief imprisonment and subsequent relocation to Scotland. Here, his violent tendencies escalated, culminating in the horrific 1999 murder of Barry Wallace, whose severed head was found on a beach in Troon, and body parts in Loch Lomond. Despite overwhelming forensic evidence, Beggs maintained his innocence and continued to fight the legal system from prison, even attempting to form a civil partnership with another inmate convicted of sex offenses. This episode provides a thorough examination of Beggs's life, his crimes, and their ongoing impact, highlighting the challenges of the justice system and the enduring pain for victims' families. We reflect on the disturbing realities of human nature and the quest for justice, leaving listeners with thought-provoking questions about Beggs's motivations and actions.00:00 Introduction to the Case00:44 Beggs' Early Life and Political Involvement01:49 Emergence of Violence and First Murder03:41 Legal Battles and Relocation to Scotland06:26 The Limbs in the Loch Murder09:53 Beggs' Life in Prison and Ongoing Legal Battles11:45 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Hosted on Acast. This is a live recording of a conversation at The Barrel House, Kendal as part of Kendal Mountain Festival on Saturday 23rd November 2024. Finlay Wild talks to The Selkies (Suzy Connor, Lizzie Goodfellow, Heloise Le Clanche and Cat Riaz) about their journey to the finish line of the 2024 Scottish Islands Peaks Race (SIPR), as the first all-female team to compete in 19 years. The SIPR is a gruelling sailing and running race involving sailing between - and running up peaks - on Mull, Jura and Arran in a non stop race from Oban to Troon, held in May each year. The fifth member of the team was sailor Kirsteen Woods. The team first had to find each other and a boat to even get to the start line. Muir Anderson lent his boat Dipper, and after a significant amount of work to make her race ready, the team were ready to compete. Navigating what is traditionally a male dominated race, they finished in a little under 68 hours in a close run race with the chasing boat. It was a pleasure to meet the team and hear their recollections of the journey - complete with anecdotes about purgatorial rowing, 7am champagne, and terrible singing! And if anyone has a spare yacht for 2025... See the team in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVsgGC0mtBU If you want to buy me a cuppa to help support the podcast, thank you and please do at: https://ko-fi.com/finlaywild

Smylie Kaufman and Charlie Hulme look back at a highly entertaining week at Royal Troon which saw wild weather, a challenging course setup, and Xander Schauffele hoisting the Claret Jug as the winner of the 152nd Open Championship. Andy and Brendan are soaring into the weekend after watching an awesome day of golf at The Open, where the wind came up again and brutalized some of the best players in the world. They angrily shout down anyone moaning about the draw creating a disparity. Then they get into the conditions that ejected Rory, Bryson, Tiger, and many more. They outline some of the older vets on the board while praising the work of Shane Lowry and especially Justin Rose. Scottie and Rahm are given their flowers, too. There's a brief Tiger chat -- what is he at this point and how should we cover him? A fresh new slate of games within the game are set up for the weekend, bringing the golf's biggest superstar, Marcel Siem, into the fray. They close with a few thoughts on some big name cut missers.
Smylie Kaufman and Charlie Hulme recap day two at the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon, where Smylie is on-site broadcasting the major for NBC Sports. Friday's cut resulted in some shocking names missing the weekend - Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Viktor Hovland, and Bryson DeChambeau, among others - and SK explains why that was the case given the conditions at Troon. Smylie was the walker assigned to Shane Lowry's group and goes through his bizarre playing of the 11th hole resulting in double bogey, in addition to the two birdies he made coming down the stretch to take the lead. We could not make it through the episode without discussing Smylie's attire in the booth - he donned a traditional Scottish kilt to close Friday's coverage window, and explains how that went down.
Who will cement 2024 as their year? Scottie? Rory? Bryson? Xander? Tiger? Collin? Another? Troon will be windy, rainy, and present many opportunities for disaster. Rory changed his phone number; London is cool; a UK Barstool Classic may be in the future; Jonesy is getting married; Tiger looks good. Plus questions From The Gallery, Closest To The Pin, and the Daily Dozen. You can find every episode of this show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube. Andy and Brendan are buzzing after a bountiful first day at the Open at Royal Troon. They begin with the first tee time of the day, which offered its own stimulant in place of coffee in the form of Todd Hamilton's electric swing. This leads to a running Hamilton facts segment, some Dan Bradbury woe, Dan Brown praise, and Ernie apologia. They also discuss Shane Lowry, JT, and some of the other leaders on what was a very tough day at Troon, especially early. There are some ample course notes about the winds and the challenge it presented with a few specific holes that rang out during the marathon watch. There is a games-within-the-game checkin, and a few new creations, and best and worst surprises from day one, which put a certain Aussie in the crosshairs. They cover the disappointing days of Rory and Bryson and assess if they are completely out of it for the weekend. Just-A-Guy gets an evaluation after, who could have guessed, an up-and-down day. They close with some thoughts on coverage and a few awards from round one.

Brendan is joined by the inimitable Geoff Shackelford for this Wednesday episode of the Shotgun Start, and they begin by pondering whether Andy has achieved “America's guest” status. Then they quickly transition to the upcoming “links season” in pro golf with Geoff's impending trip to Scotland and with The Open and the Scottish Open fast approaching. There's a chat on the current issues with the Scottish, where Troon falls in the Open rota and what really works for it as a venue, and some favorite memories from walking the grounds at the 2016 edition there. Then they have a lengthy chat about the R&A announcing a successor to Martin Slumbers, what it says about the direction of pro golf, Slumbers's tenure, and what that new job must confront right away. They then bounce back to the last major at Pinehurst for some Shackelford thoughts on how the course played and a few spots that could be fixed ahead of the next U.S. Open, which is already coming up soon. They close with a few thoughts on Scottie Scheffler's season which dovetails into some big Open storylines and the prime contenders, namely Rory McIlroy.
Junteemf shooting, Troon would do it again, Chris Tyson's secret accounts, F1nn5ter's smug, and Rekieta's secret document.
