It poured out with a pitch black veil, slapped a boozy bourbon nose, smashed an ultra sweet, sticky, nutty & vanilla booze filled finish. It clocked in with a 11.1% ABV. We finally made it to the last installment of the series on barrel aged brews! We've previously asked brewers from two local breweries (Junkyard Brewing and Drekker Brewing) 10 questions we thought our audience might want to know about what barrel aging a beer is all about. In this LAST CALL edition, we stick with the traditional LC formula and get a little tipsy with Mick Klein and cousin Torry while asking the brewers off the wall hits such as "How do you get such a high ABV% if it doesn't come from the barrel", and "What's a yeast cake", to "How does barrel temp affect the beer", and "what future barrel projects do you have coming"? We sample and review Great Divide Brewing's Wood Werks Barrel Series #3 brown rye ale, Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck's 2013 Trignac XII, and 3 Floyds Brewing's Pillar of Beasts barrel aged salted caramel barleywine. Some hefty bois to round out the trifecta, and we hope you enjoy! For more information on our guest Mick Klein and his music, head over to - https://mickklein.com/ and show him some love! This is a heartfelt, emotional tribute to one of the Great Blind Pigs. We really dive deep into our feelings on this one to send off one of our own to a new life. Yeah who are we kidding that’s not our style. Please join us on this episode to send off Hunter in true Blind Pig fashion. We drink some beers from Big Beach Brewery in Alabama where Hunter is off and running to, along with some Florida and local brews. It doesn’t take long for us to sidetrack off onto some great stories and memories. There might even be a quick moment between Miller and Hunter where they become besties. Cheers. Marc and Jordan enjoy some Zombie Dust by 3 Floyds Brewing while discussing their plans for TomHanksGiving and My Chemical Romance's Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge.
Ryan, Dillon, and Evan talk to our friend Dennis about his work at a local, large volume distillery. We learned a lot about the process of distilling and what makes it unique. Dennis also makes wine and home and we compared and contrasted these methods with brewing. We felt it necessary to bring a beer that represents the cross-over with wine such as a Cantillon Vigneronne and a one that brings in the process of barreling with 3 Floyds Brewing '19 Marshmallow Handjee. For those that like the technical aspect of these processes, this one allowed some "nerding" out on the science behind it. We also let Dillon pull a blind beer on us off the Pour Bros tap-wall which was a fun challenge. Cheers everyone from P+P!!
The summer has been keeping us all busy but we are back with an amazing new episode with our friends Michael and Jenna. Jenna hosts her own YouTube channel (ieatallthechips) to showcase her enthusiasm for all things chips. We paired some amazing beers, such as 3 Floyds Brewing's 'Rrari Crochet, Perennial Artisan Ales' Blue Ridge, and Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen's Oude Geuze Golden Blend with some complimentary spuds to highlight each offering. It was an entertaining time sipping great beers, crunching great chips and not to mention a drop in from Bryan, Trey barking, and a broken glass. We also had the privilege of sampling a bottle of Mook Meadery's "The Big Montana", a strawberry vanilla milkshake style mead which was a big hit with the crowd...thanks to DJ!! Tune in to hear from Jenna tell us about her YouTube channel, how she became such a chip enthusiast and if she thinks cheese puffs are chips or not! This was a fun one for sure, cheers from P+P!!!
Sock lending club, red light special, and Gary Indiana. Featuring 3 Floyds Brewing.
Mark, Evan, and Ryan are joined by Andy (and other friends!) to dig in to the Abbott Annual Christmas Share. We start off by a couple of vanilla bombs by 3 Floyds Brewing and Forager Brewery. We are sure to test our palates with a couple of blind tastings but also wreck our palates on one of the more interesting beers of the night. Lots of other big beers from Perennial Artisian Ales, Toppling Goliath Brewery, Side Project Brewing, Cantillon, 3 Fonteinen, J Wakefield Brewing, Funk Factory Geuzeria, and Shared Brewing. No great beer was left untested as we enjoyed this special holiday gathering to share our best beers, cheers!!!

Ep71 is with Barnaby Struve. Former VP of 3 Floyds Brewing now owner of Puppy Mill recordings. He has moved out to Sweden to work in a brewery out there as well. I met Barnaby at Psycho Las Vegas when he came down with Victor from Dimmu Borgir for an interview. I've heard stories of Barnaby for years so I was looking forward to meeting him. After the Dimmu interview we went upstairs to the Orange Amps Suite and cracked open some beer while recording a podcast. I had a fantastic time and I hope you'll enjoy. Cheers! Sara and Nick hung out with Steve (head brewer) from Spoonwood Brewing (Pittsburgh, PA) and enjoyed Selfish Pleasure and Addict For Dramatics (Milkshake IPAs - Mocha and Vanilla respectively) We discuss coffee in beer and the wide variety of styles that can be infused with coffee. Beer #1: The Hanging Garden - Foreign Objects (7.0% IPA) Grapefruit and floral tastes make it an easy drinker for a mid tier IPA. Happy Birthday Sara! - She was mistaken for a high school student this week. Jake went to Trillium this week! He's really excited about Backlash opening soon! (We have no idea when they'll be open but they have killer beers according to Jake) Alex, Nick and Sara had a Saturday funday. They hit Dancing Gnome for Bee Balm, followed by Cinderlands (Lawrenceville, PA) and then Grist House for food and beer. Strange Roots and their sours are discussed. Alex likes their beer, but it's strange that they don't branch out more with their second location. Beer #2: Zombie Dust - 3 Floyds Brewing (6.2% Pale Ale) A very well balanced Pale Ale. Clear and malty but drinks like a west coast style ale. Jake tracked down Galactic Double Daisy Cutter in Boston which launched a conversation about Pale Ales. Shout out to Sean P. of Untappd fame for the pick up of Whole Punch: Tangerine from Hitchhiker this weekend! We hit up Cinderlands for Cosmic Cenote and it was a pickle tasting Milkshake IPA. We discuss the evolution of beer and the trends that occur including but not limited to the West Coast IPA and Milkshake IPA. Alex discusses the Hazy craze and the balance in the beer industry. We ask the important question about what is the next big trend? Hitchhiker is a great brewery and we would love for you to check them out! Great beer and great staff. Beer #3: Bee Balm - Dancing Gnome (8.5% IPA)Soft and fruity, but still hop forward... duh. Check out our follow up next week! Lots of releases and new cans incoming!
SCOTUS rules against workers. Workers must abide by forced arbitration clauses. Welcome to the privatization of our court system. Justice Neil “Elections-have-consequences” Gorsuch wrote for the majority. The ruling has potentially significant implications for #MeToo movement. The highlight of the ruling was Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s blistering dissent. Trump formally announces new gag rule barring family planning clinics that receive federal funding under Title X from providing abortions or referring patients to abortion services. And court challenges are dubious because...say it with me...elections have consequences. On the positive side of the ledger. court rules that Trump can’t block people on Twitter. No troll-free zone for your highness. Last week we learned of Trump’s bromance with Kim Jong Un and their meet-up in the Philippines. Now, North Korea is yanking Donald’s chain, warning of a nuclear showdown and calling Mike Pence a “political dummy.” And this just in this morning...Trump cancels the Philippine summit. There goes the Nobel Peace Prize. We were not recording last Friday when the latest school shooting went down in Santa Fe, Texas. The NRA death cult has been feverishly going through their post-child sacrifice rituals. Guns don’t kill people...guns don’t kill people...guns don’t kill people. A report released earlier this month by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found an unexpected increase in emissions of CFC-11, a chemical banned under the 1987 Montreal Climate Protocol. Scientists say this suggests someone may be secretly manufacturing the pollutant in violation of the international accord. Who wants to bet we’ll find out in the end that Jared Kushner and the Emir of Qatar will be involved in some way. Huge news out of Georgia. Stacey Abrams becomes the first African American woman to ever win a major party nomination for governor. Not only that, she won her primary running against a centrist Democrat - Stacey Evans who ran on the typical corporate Democrat line of shifting to the right. A former executive of Frisco Hospice in Texas admitted to overdosing patients to “hasten their deaths” so the company could rake in the bucks. The $60 million scheme with Nova Health Services owner Bradley and Amy Harris made patients “go bye-bye” when the company could no longer profit. Also in Texas, Texas Lt governor Dan Patrick thinks that banning doors on school buildings will stop mass shooters. He clarifies his statements later saying that guns don’t kill people, video games and movies kill people. NFL bans taking a knee during the national anthem, because freedom. And in other sports news, City of Milwaukee releases video showing rookie NBA player getting tased for parking in a handicapped spot. PA legislators want their nothing burgers medium rare with a side of per diems. #PAHouse not expected to vote on much on this rare Thursday session day because @PAHouseGOP caucus can't get enough support on some controversial bills. PA Senate passed the pipeline protest criminalization bill with the happy support of several Democrats. Word has it that the House doesn’t have the energy to take it up. PA Democrats all shaky after DSA wins. Scarnati pushing hard for open primaries in PA now. What’s going on with that? Poor people’s campaign back in the Capitol loud and proud. Several demonstrators arrested for...what...tug-o’-war? Sean was there and got some great pics and vids of the action. In a secret process. Daniel Greenstein, a former director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Postsecondary Success program, was chosen to be the next Chancellor of PASSHE. Everyone is jumping on the positive PR blitz...and that may pan out. But right now there’s few specifics and lots of fawning over Dr. McDreamy...just look at that hair. [he’s a doctor]. Look, Greenstein might turn out to be great...but we’re going to hold off on that until we’ve “done our research” and see some specifics. And, Colleen Bradley readies her writ of certiorari for the U.S. Supreme Court. In today’s Last Call, the Syfy channel cancels The Expanse just when it’s getting good. Amazon may play hero. Does craft beer have a worker problem? A great new piece in Splinter about the issue. Kevin was in Chicago last weekend...which is why we went a little early last week. I got to see an awesome comedy show at Up Comedy Club of Second City in Chicago. The show was an all-women show, #SheThePeople. It was an awesome feminist review. I got to sample some great beer from Revolution Brewing while in Chicago. I had their tasty American IPA, Anti-Hero - Their Flagship IPA. That went nicely with some great grub at Corcoran’s Grill and Pub in Old Town. I also had Yum Yum by 3 Floyds Brewing at Corcoran’s. That was a light session Pale Ale. My favorite, though, was The Defender American Stout by Haymarket Brewing. Brewed with Roasted Barley, Chocolate Malt, Dark Crystal Malt and Oats then hopped and dry-hopped with Cascade, Chinook, and Amarillo. It was nice drinking that on the 10th-floor balcony of Cindy’s rooftop restaurant in the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, overlooking Millennial Park. Philly beer week kicks off from June 1 - 10.
Collaborations o'plenty this episode. We grabbed all of the bottles we could here locally to bring you a collab trifecta. We've got beers from all over the state... or mostly, from the North of the state. To open our show we talk about, Double O Session IPA from Sun King Brewery out of Indianapolis and Revolution Brewing out of Chicago. Session IPA is a very apt description and each brewery was able to maintain their identity in this beer while the marriage of the two brought out a very distinct taste. That beer is promptly and professionally followed by a joint effort from Deviate Brewing and Black Acre Brewing both out of Indiana. This Quadruple IPA is named, Hop Lunacy and for very good reason. This one is a "right of passage" type IPA and probably tastes like nothing you've had before. This episode is finished off with a collaboration between 3 Floyds Brewing and Dark Matter Coffee out of Chicago. The Mastodon Crack The Skye is a very good beer, but this beer caused some argument among the group.Sit back and enjoy what may be our most beer centered beer podcast ever. Be sure to listen, rate, share, and subscribe.
