We honor the life of the late singer-songwriter David Crosby who joined All Of It in 2019 to discuss the documentary, David Crosby: Remember My Name. We talk about his legacy and air clips from the interview.
Marcus Eaton Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Live from Florence Italy, singer/songwriter, easy on the eyes and ears, Marcus Eaton, treated us to a mini concert and great conversation. When David Crosby describes you as, "one of the best young singer-songwriters in America - maybe even the world, brilliant musically, brilliant lyrically, and he just plays guitar like God on a good day,” then invites you to tour, record, and co-write with him, and plays on your album… well, it doesn't get much better than that. And yet, it does. Add to that composing the soundtrack of David Crosby: Remember My Name, and, opening for Bob Dylan, and Dave Matthews, to name two, his own, Versions of The Truth (https://www.marcuseaton.com/music), which Crosby joined him on for some, Invisible Lines, and his new album tentatively titled 'What Is Real' set for release this year. Marcus started us off with my request of his Better Way, reminiscent of Sting, but oh, so Marcus. We talked about his first trip to Italy, accompanying Roy Mcalister, a renowned luthier, who connected Marcus with his protege, Allessio Guarnieriri, who along with Marcus' ideas and suggestions created his signature guitar, a masterpiece, the Guarnieri ME. On it, Marcus treated us to his brand new, Something True, Obvious, some crazy in the best way, slap playing, a bow rendition of The Last of the Mohicans, which went viral on TikTok and closed with a smoldering cover of Sting's Fragile. There were great stories about growing up in Idaho surrounded by a musically gifted family, getting signed, hitting the road, hungry, literally, a near-miss opportunity in late March 2020 to open for huge heroes, derailed by the pandemic, and finding his soul and his feet in Italy, the land of his heritage, surprising at first glance. Marcus is an original, one-of-a-kind, take my breath away athletic guitarist, with an evocative voice, and provocative songs––he's handsome as heck, a gifted fine artist, and well, the whole package is pretty spectacular. I encourage you to Spotify the hell outta him. I call him "Football." If I had to guess his occupation, well… I've not seen too many singer/songwriters who look quite like this, nor have I heard any who sound like this. Marcus is as easy on the ears, mind, heart & soul as he is on the eyes. SCORE! 9 Months 9 Resolutions – Covid Continues At the beginning of this year, I committed to making 12 resolutions – one per month- rather than one big, ominous resolution for the whole year. So far, so good. I have been slowly checking little things off my big list, even when a global pandemic called Coronavirus reared its ugly head earlier this year. But that’s not the story. This month I was looking for something inspirational…something comforting in this time of unknowing. I found it in the form of 60’s music! I watched some incredible documentaries that made me feel great. These films feature music that helped me forget about Coronavirus -albeit temporarily. The list is endless… Once Were Brothers (Robbie Robertson and The Band), The Last Waltz (directed by Martin Scorsese and hailed as one of the greatest documentary concert films ever), David Crosby: Remember My Name, Echo in the Canyon ( a documentary about the ‘California sound’ featuring The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas and Papas) just to name a few. I asked myself why I was suddenly craving this genre of music. It was….comforting. The lyrics, the music, the collaboration, the comradery – the ‘hippiness’ of it all. It seemed like a simpler time. A kinder and gentler moment in history. But was it really? The Vietnam War, The Civil Rights protests, the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, the Cuban Missile Crisis, etc. etc. It wasn’t a kinder and gentler time, at all. If anything, it was uglier and more violent. Perhaps, underneath the trampled protest signs, bullets and bloodshed were the seeds of peace, love, forgiveness and creativity. Catalysts at the crossroads of folk and rock. If they could create then, we can certainly create now. As Bob Dylan once said, “Behind every beautiful thing, there’s some kind of pain.” These are definitely challenging times. Many of us feel helpless. Some of us will write, sing, dance or even tell jokes! Because, that’s what we do. That’s how we cope. At the very least, it will comfort us in the minute and, who knows? We just might create something beautiful. Rock on. Be safe. xo
The son of a musician and songwriter, A.J. Eaton grew up in rural Idaho but has worked as a television and film director in Los Angeles for the last 20 years. His 2019 documentary David Crosby: Remember My Name (produced by Cameron Crowe, Greg Mariotti, and Michele Farinola). From its premiere at Sundance and subsequent theatrical release, the film garnered positive reviews with a 98% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and won multiple awards, including Best Music Documentary at the Boulder International Film Festival, as well as a Grammy Nomination for Best Music Film. What you will learn: How growing up in a musical family influenced him creatively. How he learned about filmmaking in a state that has no film school (Idaho). Why he was appointed by the Governor of Idaho to help encourage filmmakers to shoot movies in that state. How jobs he took as an aspiring filmmaker helped him hone his skills as an editor, producer, and director. How he turned his idea to interview David Crosby on film, with no funding and no backing from a studio, into a fully-realized documentary, produced by world-renowned, iconic filmmaker Cameron Crowe. What it was like to attend the Sundance Film Festival with David Crosby. What it was like to work with Cameron Crowe and how Cameron’s unique interview techniques resulted in profoundly touching disclosures and revelations by Crosby. The unique challenges presented by the documentary filmmaking process. It just doesn’t get much better than this. Marcus Eaton, who David Crosby said is, “… a really brilliant writer. Brilliant musically. Brilliant lyrically. And he just plays guitar like God on a good day." Having borne witness, I say, Amen. Marcus, who composed the score of the recently released, critically acclaimed doc, David Crosby: Remember My Name, and has recorded, toured and written with David, as well as opened for Dylan - that would be Bob, Dave Mathews, Jewel, Train, played with Seal and Flea to name but some––is gifted beyond my description. After seeing him at a stupendous Jeff Young gig, and now hearing and watching him play quite a bit here, he’s quickly become one of my favorite guitarists. The rest of the package, singer/songwriter/artist/human/fashionista is right up there with it. And, he makes one fine cup of joe. Thus, my… frenetic exuberance. Yes, let’s blame that. Ears, eyes, heart, soul, mind blown, in the best possible ways. Marcus shares his story, growing up in a gifted family in Idaho, his father, Steve Eaton, a successful hit maker for The Carpenters and many others, operatic grandparents, and filmmaker brother, AJ Eaton, who when introduced to Crosby, so impressed him, he invited him to chronicle his story. Introduced by a mutual friend and hitting it off immediately, Marcus and David’s work together soon began with Crosby gifting Marcus with a Roy McAllister acoustic guitar, leading to Marcus Eaton signature edition. With a style and sound reminiscent of Ed Sheehan and Sting, Marcus leans in and does an amazing cover of Fragile on his upcoming EP, Invisible Lines, soon to be available in amazingly packaged vinyl. Marcus treats us to a taste of it, opens the show with Better Way, from his Versions of The Truth, his most requested tune, Fiona, Handed Down, which he gifted to the Peregrine Fund, a non-profit which conserves threatened and endangered birds of prey, a passion of his, dating back to his childhood obsession with Falcons, and bits of numerous other musical tastes and treats. His strumming, picking, percussing––astounding. There’s talk of his musical obsessions (Victor Wooten for one), touring tales, his love of Italy… Guarnieri guitars, finding an exact locale in Venice in time to finish a painting years ago begun… it’s a show packed with passion, playing, and wonder. I loved every second. Marcus’s music is easily accessed here: https://www.marcuseaton.com/music Marcus can next be seen Live at Women Who Write, on Tuesday, Oct 29th, at 11 am PT. In LA… come!
