She's a scientist who unravels the complex food web that supports everything alive in the water-from microscopic plankton to the big fish we love to catch. What makes Rebecca even cooler? She's also an avid angler and hunter. Living in tiny Alberton, Montana (population around 400), just a stone's throw from Missoula - where A River Runs Through It was filmed - she has a deep understanding of the intricate connections between algae, plankton, insects, and the walleye, bass, trout and whitefish at the top of the food chain. Episode 101 Rebekah Barsotti Case Update We originally covered the case of 33 year old Rebekah Barsotti back in episode 46 of Missing Persons. Rebekah, along with her dog Cerberus, disappeared in the area of Clark Fork River near Alberton, Montana in July, 2021. She had been going through a divorce, and her family believed that she may have been the victim of foul play. When Cerberus's remains were found days later 10 miles downstream, but Rebekah's were not, it only fueled concerns that Rebekah wasn't an accidental drowning victim; despite that being the theory of the police investigating the case. Finally on May 17, 2022, fisherman discovered Rebekah's remains on the bank of the Clark Fork River, almost a year after Rebekah went missing. In the minds of Rebekah's family, the discovery only served to re-ask old questions, and it brought a host of new ones. Police consider the case closed, but Rebekah's family believe that there is more than meets the eye. In this episode, we update listeners on the case, and try to figure out; what happened to Rebekah Barsotti.

It's a story that rocked the nation. On the 2nd of May 2018, the Pink Ladies (an organisation for Missing Children in South Africa) issued a kidnapped child alert after it was alleged that a domestic worker took a Baby named Eden, tied on her back with a light blue blanket, for a walk… and did not return to the family home in Brackendowns, Alberton. The nation watched with heartbreak as the minutes, turned into hours and then turned into days. South Africa had become invested in a story where everyone was waiting for some good news. And 4 days later that good news came. Baby Eden had been reunited with his family, and his story had restored hope in so many South Africans. Baby Eden's mom, Bronwyn Laird joined the Good Things Guy in studio to chat a little bit about their story. "We've seen miracles happen and prayers answered. We cannot allow what 6 individuals, 5 of whom we have never even met - what they chose to do - to affect how we see the world, how we evaluate relationships going forward or how we live our lives. Hate just isn't in our vocabulary. Hate changes nothing but love changes everything. Love wins." Their story is tragic, and what happened to them is harrowing but it is their story going forward that is so incredibly inspiring. Listen to the full interview here.
Freight train derailments in the U.S. have come under increasing scrutiny since a train carrying hazardous materials derailed and burned in East Palestine, Ohio, in early February. Montana is no stranger to freight train derailments. In 1996, a train derailed near Alberton and released chlorine. Some residents still live with health problems from chemical exposure. And, just this past Sunday, April 2, a freight train derailed near Paradise, spilling thousands of beers into the Clark Fork River. With me today is Joshua Murdock, a reporter at the Missoulian. He reports on outdoor recreation, natural resources and the environment. He was at the site of Sunday's derailment and is reporting on the incident. He's also spent hours interviewing Missoula author Ron Scholl, a leading expert on chemical spills from train derailments who says that Alberton holds lessons for East Palestine. Josh has also reported on how hazardous materials transported by train are largely kept secret from the public, including from the communities they pass through.
