This fascinating conversation focuses on the deeper dimensions of providing services to people with intellectual disabilities. Andrew speaks with David Swain, the CEO of Endeavour Foundation, a provider of support services and employment to people living with disabilities in Queensland, Australia. David talks about caring in action, recognizing the inherent worth of the people being served, with a focus on making impact rather than making money. At the same time, David talks about the need to speak the language of business when running a large organization. He leads us into the intersection of purpose-driven action and leadership, the key things that allow him to create a greater impact organizationally and individually. David also talks about the need to focus on and measure the being level at work, not just the doing. He serves as a wonderful inspiration for those of us trying to make a greater impact with our work in the world.

It was the Caribbean vacation Shelley Tyre had been looking forward to - sunning, sailing and scuba diving with her husband and friends in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. In March 1999, the vacation finally came. They had lots of fun activities planned but at the top of the list was plenty of SCUBA diving as it was a passion of theirs.  On the fateful last dive, at a site called Twin Tugs, something went horribly and mysteriously wrong. Shelley was dead and the Tortola police wanted to talk to her husband, David Swain. “What's the worst that can happen? We only have one life, you have to go for things...” David Swain David Swain is no stranger to making big changes and taking the “leap.” He shares his story with us during this insightful conversation, giving us a look inside the origins of his own drive and his ability to thoughtfully navigate change throughout his life and career. From Small Town to Big Business, How David Swain Moves Through Change to Live a Life of No Regrets How did a psychology and economics major become one of the early employees at Facebook and their Head of Technology Communications? How did David Swain decide to leave this position at one of the hottest companies in Silicone Valley to help grow another start up, now one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, as the Global Head of Communications? You would think Dave would have settled at this point, so you can understand why I was eager to ask Dave what fueled him, to at the peak of his career, leave, and make what was his biggest leap yet, becoming an entrepreneur as the CEO and Co Founder of Prokit. Wouldn't we all love to cultivate the ability to know ourselves so well, that we trust our process and the feelings we're experiencing, when we're faced with a big life or career change? I know I would love to have this clarity and I was hungry to learn all about Dave's process and his suggestions for listeners. Here's some of what we cover during today's episode: How Dave's youth impacted his outlook on life Having conversations with people and not going it alone. How to learn what makes you tick. Understanding your strengths.and how to maximize them. Visualizing the type of career that's a great fit for you. How to change your outlook if you're in a career rut. The rationale on “enjoying the grind.” The mindset of ‘having no regrets'. I took so much wisdom from this conversation and left very energized! David has so much practical insight to share from his many life and career experiences. I truly hope that you leave this podcast motivated to take agency over decisions you may be struggling with by implementing some of the techniques Dave suggests throughout. Please share this episode with anyone you know who may need help navigating life and career changes (don't we all!?). I'm pretty excited about today's guest.  The best thing about podcasting is I get to learn even more about a person's story, even when they are a friend!  I first met David Swain when we connected over Prokit.  Prokit celebrates adventurers and the athletic experience, whether you're just getting started or breaking world records. The platform is designed to help cut through the noise, learn from the best, and find the community you need to reach your potential. David Swain is the co-founder of Prokit along with Angela Zaeh.  The idea first popped in his head in 2013 when he signed up for his first cyclocross race. Just like all of us when we start new things, David wondered how to train, what gear to use, where to race, what to eat, what events his friends are doing and the idea of Prokit was born.  But David is so much more than the founder of Prokit. His experience in communication and team building is unparalleled.   David's story is interesting and a wild ride- from driving cross-country to San Francisco, to traveling the world, and eventually landing at FB in 2008, he has had a lot of diverse experiences.  He's written speeches for Mark Zuckerberg, fought massive international communications fires, and launched the Like button to the world.  And in 2013, David joined the leadership team at Instagram and worked on everything that went into building the company, the brand, and the approach to growing it internationally.  He had a team of 23 people in nine countries and did everything from meeting with Pope Francis to navigating how Instagram created its internal culture, goal setting, and more.  You can imagine the challenges of working in such an intense environment as we all have experienced the birth and growth of Instagram! In this podcast, we talked about communication strategies as individuals, in teams and relationships, the power of a whiteboard, the importance of diversity when building a team.  We talked about how to give and receive feedback, how meditation has been a gamechanger for David, the difference between meaning and happiness and so much more. Individuals living with mental health diagnoses are often marginalized by society, and stigmatization and discrimination may form a barrier to their recovery and social integration. There are a lot of strategies to help combat the stigma associated with mental illness, including sharing information about mental illness; talking openly about mental health; using person-first, non-discriminatory language; and showing compassion. One of the most important strategies is to empower the individual with the behavioral health diagnosis to share their personal story and journey. In this interview, we’ll hear from one such individual, David, as he shares his personal journey from being diagnosed with bipolar disorder to recovery with Dr. Suresh Sureddi and Ms. Cathy Judd. Suzy Barile - Undaunted Heart: The True Story Of A Southern Belle & A Yankee General Undaunted Heart: The True Story Of A Southern Belle & A Yankee General When a brigade of General Sherman's victorious army marched into Chapel Hill the day after Easter 1865, the Civil War had just ended and President Abraham Lincoln had been assassinated. Citizens of the picturesque North Carolina college town had endured years of hardship and sacrifice, and now the Union army was patrolling its streets. One of Sherman's young generals paid a visit to the stately home of David Swain, president of the University of North Carolina and a former governor of the state, to inform him that the town was now under Union occupation. Against this unlikely backdrop began a passionate and controversial love story still vivid in town lore. When President Swain's daughter Ella met the Union general, life for these two young people who had spent the war on opposite sides was forever altered. General Smith Atkins of Illinois abhorred slavery and greatly admired Abraham Lincoln. Spirited young Ella Swain had been raised in a slave-owning family and had spent the war years gathering supplies to send to Confederate soldiers. But, as a close friend of the Swain's wrote, when Atkins met Ella, the two "changed eyes at first sight and a wooing followed." The reaction of the Swains and fellow North Carolinians to this North-South love affair was swift and often unforgiving. In Undaunted Heart: The True Story of a Southern Belle and a Yankee General, author Suzy Barile, a great-great-granddaughter of Ella Swain and Smith Atkins, tells their story, separating facts from the elaborate embellishments the famous courtship and marriage have taken on over the generations. Interwoven throughout Undaunted Heart are excerpts from Ella's never-before-published letters to her parents that reveal a loving marriage that transcended differences and scandal.
