This week we're talking with Navy veteran John Barile about how he went from Navy Sea Air Rescue Swimmer to becoming a highly successful business owner. After the military Barile took a dive into business ownership when he opened an EverLine Coatings and Services franchise, which does parking lot line striping and pavement maintenance in the San Diego area. As veterans always have a story or two, Barile shared some great sea stories from his time as a Navy rescue swimmer. Including one involving a burly, bearded Navy Sailor with a huge dip who delivered one of the greatest recruitment pitches of all time! Barile described that while the pavement and line striping industry is a lesser-known business category, it's one of many skilled trade businesses that are booming. He also offered a closer look at EverLine Coatings and Services, and how the recent growth of San Diego's restaurant scene, has resulted in massive growth for his business. And he shared why veterans looking for higher income and job security should consider trade franchises like EverLine, which help owners paint a portrait of true business success. In our weekly vocations segment, Morning Light introduces you to Fr. Larry Barile from the Diocese of Norwich, CT. Fr. Larry is a late vocation to the priesthood, having been a husband, father and respiratory therapist for almost 30 years before joining the seminary! Tune in and listen to his unique story that proves how the Lord can write straight with crooked lines.
Hillary Barile isn't sure what she'd call herself first: a farmer or a maltster. In reality, she's both, working as a fifth generation farmer at Rabbit Hill Farms & Malthouse in Shiloh, New Jersey. There, she and members of her family produce barley and other crops, as well as run a small-scale malthouse that supplies ingredients for breweries and distilleries. And, as president of the Craft Maltsters Guild Board of Directors, she works to educate and grow the craft malt community across North America and beyond. So why, and how, did she make the jump from farming pottoes to investing in the agriculture and future of craft malt? It started with homebrewing, of course, with aspirations of opening a brewery to diversify and solidify her farm's finances. But, as she explains in this episode, the business plan never got that far. As for what's next, she says the breweries prioritizing local craft malt can tell unique stories that still reach the hearts of drinkers, giving them a small, but sufficient shield against difficult economic forces. We also discuss the many definitions of the word “sustainable,” and the efforts she's making to ensure generations to come will still have the opportunity to nurture the land her family has cultivated.
Feeling anxious lately? I don't know about you…but my mental health went down the toilet in 2020. I've always been anxious by nature but since turning 40 - which was followed closely by the pandemic - I've had to make my mental health more of a priority and I know I'm not alone: according to the world health organization, global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by a whopping 25% in the first year of the pandemic. So, um, maybe we should talk about it? It's so hard to tease out which feelings are totally normal and expected given the current state of our world and which are a signal that something more serious is going on. And, what to do about it. First things first: I've gotta say it, TALK TO YOUR DOC…but I also know that when something goes wrong, so many of us turn to the internet for answers. And it's the wild west out there, with all manner of opinions on what is causing our anxiety…and what to do about it. If you've ever seen a post on regulating your nervous system, activating your vagus nerve and eating to beat anxiety…you might want to listen to this episode. I'm speaking with Dr Nicole Lippman-Barile PhD, clinical psychologist, to talk about anxiety through the lens of wellness. I started following her a while back because she's very good at calling BS on all the things wellness gets wrong about mental health. And there is some pretty shady advice being doled out on the internet about the role of diet and anxiety, the gut brain connection and the microbiome…you name it, so I wanted to ask Dr Nicole to set the record straight about some common myths as well as evidence-based strategies for improving your mental health. About Nicole Lippman-Barile PhD: Dr. Nicole Barile is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the intensive outpatient treatment of anxiety and mood disorders. She is extensively trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and utilizes elements of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Eastern philosophy. On this episode we chat about: The difference between a feeling of anxiety and an anxiety disorder Whether there's been an increase of anxiety disorder in the general population or not What we actually know about the gut-brain connection Is there any good evidence that diet CAN cure a diagnosed anxiety disorder? The difference between gut-derived serotonin and brain-derived serotonin. How the pandemic made Nicole realize she had to un-learn the nutrition misinformation she was taught in school What the RECENT research really says about seed oils and inflammation Why individual differences need to be considered when applying mental health or nutrition solutions: If something works for an influencer, does that mean it'll work for you? The role of therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Therapy in the effective treatment of anxiety Do lifestyle changes like exercise, mindfulness, and social support aid therapy in the treatment of mental illness symptoms? A solution that ISN'T talked about a lot online: how to problem solve what may be causing your anxiety … and approach the things you've been avoiding Support the Pod! In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Dr. Nicole Lippman-Barile, PhD, a licensed clinical psychologist, about the connection between dietary patterns and mental health. Dr. Nicole discusses what the research states about the connection between nutrition and mental health and highlights the differences between the claims we see on social media and what the literature actually supports. Dr. Nicole discusses foods and nutrients that have evidence of bettering our mental health, as well as make it worse, in addition to highlighting the multitude of factors that play a role in the connection between nutrition and mental health. You may not know that I grew up a punk rock kid in the late 80's but that's a fact. My hair transitioned through lots of colors, my Doc Martens were original and my weekends full of hardcore shows at small venues near and far. What I learned in those formative years, as part of that scene, shaped much of my core identity and values that live through me still. Today's guest similarly came of age in mosh pits along the eastern seaboard from Washington D.C to Boston, taking the pole position for women and becoming a matriarch within the fan culture. Author, award winning teacher and punk rock maven Nancy Barile grew up promoting all ages hard core shows in Philly on Sunday afternoons before it was a thing…she's actually why it's a thing so you can thank her directly for that. Having spent the past 28 years teaching English Language Arts to public school children outside of Boston, Nancy is here to share with you the most important life lessons the world of punk taught her and teach you how you can apply them to your own life-even if the music isn't for you ;) Her book “'I'm Not Holding Your Coat: My Bruises and All Memoirs of Punk Rock Rebellion” chronicles her experience as a woman at the leading edge of a musical and social movement full of (young)men. Tony grew up in a regular all-American household and lived a pretty average childhood, but he never could've anticipated the life he now lives. He started his entrepreneurial journey as a child offering swim lessons in his area. Today, he runs a huge bankruptcy law firm with 4 branches across the US. Being an entrepreneur was never in the books. In fact, his father worked for GE for 45 years.“The only thing I knew growing up was my dad who went to work for 45 years at General Electric. And most of those 45 years were not good. I remember surviving layoffs and surviving friends getting laid off - that's what I knew.”While his story might seem like an average American tale, Tony reveals a significant personal adversity that he overcame in 2022. Links: Episode page (with more links) Subscribe to Premium Introduction Depression is a common disorder and is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Depression results from a complex interaction of social, psychological, and biological factors. Diet has been one area that has been suggested in playing a role; from potential for exacerbating symptoms to being a treatment. And while some associations have been noted, many claims far exceed what (little) evidence exists. Online it is common to see people claiming certain diets can treat depression or that certain foods will improve outcomes. However, does the evidence match such claims? In trials that have been published on diet-depression, there has been considerable media attention and fanfare around some results. For example, the SMILES trial published out of Australia. However, some have raised considerable concerns about the interpretation of such findings. In this episode, clinical psychologist Dr. Nicole Lippman-Barile is on the podcast to discuss what we currently know about diet and depression, what issues exist with current studies, and why many nutrition-mental health studies are being incorrently interpreted.
Our guest is Dr. Nicole Lipman Barile, PhD, Clinical Psychologist and Nutrition Therapy Practitioner with over 10 years of experience working with patients. She specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and uses her incredible social media platform ‘Feed Your Mental' to disperse evidence-based information on mental health. What we most love about her is her stance against the exhausting amount of pseudoscience in our shared field of neuroscience and psychology. Not only does she break down the latest evidence into palatable information, but she also points out why some influencers are inclined to share misinformation on social media, and what we can do to identify and avoid them. In this episode, we speak about the role of diet in depression, her work with OCD patients and how to navigate through social media while avoiding pseudoscience. This week's episode is a replay of Episode 117: How Kristina Barile Went From MIT Rocket Scientist to Living Off The Land In Panama. On this week's episode, I interview the incredible Kristina Barile on her journey from a Harvard and MIT-grad rocket scientist to living in a mud home in Panama, teaching holistic, nutritional Ayurveda and freelance writing. In last week's episode, we talked all about how unnatural our lives have become and the effects it is having on our lives. Kristina and her husband recognized this deep restlessness in corporate America and decided to embark on a journey to find a better way. Her journey opened her up to a wide array of experiences: traveling 30 hours up to Mount Kailash in the Himalayan Mountains, to living in India for 5 months to focus on meditation and self-awareness, to finally building a sustainable mud home in Panama. Kristina's story is still evolving but her unwavering desire to ground herself and live an authentic life will keep her moving forward.
