In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Peter Beinart speaks with Dr. Lara Jirmanus and Professor Atalia Omer about the Harvard University's two new reports, one on Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian bias and the other on antisemitism and anti-Israel bias. They discuss the quality of the reports, how the antisemitism report erases Jews who are critical of Israel, and what the potential impact is for a report on Islamophobia, anti-Arab and Anti-Palestinian bigotry.  For more, see the two Harvard reports: Combating Anti-Muslim, Anti-Arab, and Anti-Palestinian Bias" and "Combating Antisemitism and Anti-Israeli Bias."  Dr. Lara Jirmanus is a family physician and a Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School. Lara has been involved in grassroots organizing, advocacy and research for many years, addressing worker and immigrant rights in the US, infectious diseases in Brazil and the impact of conflict and displacement in the Middle East. Her research focuses on religion, violence, and peacebuilding as well as theories and methods in the study of religion and Palestine/Israel. Atalia  earned her PhD in religion, ethics, and politics from the Committee on the Study of Religion at Harvard University and she was, until recently, a senior fellow at Harvard Divinity School's Religion and Public Life's Religion, Conflict, and Peace Initiative. Atalia is also on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Middle East Peace. She recently published "I'm an Israeli professor. Why is my work in Harvard's antisemitism report?" The speed of weight loss, rather than the GLP-1 itself, is often the primary driver of muscle mass reduction. Many individuals on GLP-1s aim to eventually discontinue the medication, making long-term lifestyle planning a crucial part of the treatment.Stopping GLP-1s abruptly can trigger rebound weight gain due to the body's natural metabolic response.AI's role in healthcare should be focused on enhancing human care delivery, not replacing the crucial empathetic connection. The future of healthcare will include advanced primary care that addresses the gaps between traditional doctor visits.Resources:Connect with and follow Dr. Carolyn Jasik on LinkedIn.Discover more about Omada Health on LinkedIn and their website.

Welcome to the 165th episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. Andi-Jean Miro (@aestheticsbyandi).  We return to celebrity dentist Dr. Andi this week to discuss some controversial practices in cosmetic dentistry. Is the rising popularity of over-the-counter dental procedures good or bad? What's the real cost of patients getting their teeth done overseas, attracted by the lower sticker price? How do we manage unrealistic expectations of patients coming from social media platforms where people have “perfect” teeth? Dr. Andi has seen it all, and wants anyone considering cosmetic dentistry to know what's possible and what's too good to be true. You won't want to miss this opportunity to educate yourself and pass on Andi's wisdom to your patients. New parent sleep and mental health can be such a tricky topic, with so many blanket statements thrown around. In this episode I'm joined by Dr. Emma Basch, licensed clinical psychologist, for a wide-ranging and nuanced conversation about postpartum mental health.A few of the many things we discussed include:Most people struggle with the transition to parenthood, and what some signs are that you should seek some additional support.Protecting a parent's sleep through mental health struggles is complex and nuanced, and we don't need to put baby and parent needs in opposition to each other.Sleep and mental health have a bidirectional relationship and we need to look at that relationship from both sides.Informed decision making is key, and there is no one right way to do anything in parenting. There is so much information overload affecting how we figure out our values. This conversation was hard to sum up, and also so wonderful to have. I hope you enjoy listening to it. I'd love to hear what stands out to you.About EmmaDr. Emma Basch is a licensed clinical psychologist based in Washington, DC. Haiti's crisis of gang violence and political dysfunction has been spiraling out of control. The number of reported homicides more than doubled last year to almost 4,800, and kidnappings soared to almost 2,500 cases. Sexual violence is rampant, and 313,000 Haitians have fled their homes. In recent weeks, the crisis has reached new heights. While de facto Prime Minister Ariel Henry was out of the country, the gangs took advantage and rampaged across the capital, Port-au-Prince. According to the United Nations, since the start of the year, the gangs have killed over 1,100 people and injured nearly 700 others. As the gangs roam freely, the United States and Caribbean countries – in a bloc called CARICOM – are trying to mediate a solution. The result thus far – though still unfolding – is that Henry has agreed to resign as soon as a transitional council of possibly 9 members is formed and an interim prime minister is chosen. But many questions remain about how that council and the interim prime minister will be appointed, which segments of Haitian society will be represented on it, and how a potential Kenyan-led international policing mission might go forward.Where does Haiti go from here?Joining the show to discuss the security situation in Haiti, and how policymakers in the region and around the world are addressing it, are Rosy Auguste Ducéna and Beatrice Lindstrom. Rosy is a human rights lawyer and Program Manager for the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (RNDDH) in Haiti and has testified before the U.S. Congress. Today, I am diving deep into the multifaceted world of beauty – an intensely personal and profoundly public topic. The beauty landscape has undergone a seismic shift from societal perceptions to self-reflection in the age of social media and video calls. In a world where self-scrutiny is constant, have we become more conscious of our own uniqueness? Are we conditioned to view ourselves through an augmented lens, even in reality? Today, we will unpack these questions and try to gain insights into the complex interplay of beauty, technology, and societal norms.   My guest, Dr. John Mesa, MD, answers some of these questions. He is a Colombian plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic plastic surgery for the face, neck, and breasts. He is known as the “king of buccal fat removal” within the plastic surgery community. Sigh, See, Start: How to Be the Parent Your Child Needs in a World That Won't Stop Pushing―A Science-Based Method in Three Simple Steps by Alison Escalante https://amzn.to/49vJ7EP In a perfectionistic parenting culture that tells you that you are never enough no matter how much you do for your kids, this unique approach empowers you with a simple parenting technique to gain confidence, remain grounded, and connect positively with your children. Dr. Alison Escalante is a board-certified pediatrician with more than two decades of experience who has spent the last ten years exploring ways to equip parents to meet their children's needs. She has experienced first-hand the culture of criticism and anxiety that drains parental joy and leaves parents feeling bad about what they should or should not be doing with and for their children. She calls this the parenting “ShouldStorm,” and this book is her invitation to escape that cycle and be the parent your child needs. In this game-changing parenting book, Dr. Escalante outlines her 3-step science-based approach to escaping the ShouldStorm and embracing should-free mindful parenting. Going into detail about each step, she clearly explains how to implement this approach in everyday situations where parents may feel overwhelmed and shares real results from parents and children who use the technique: SIGH: In moments of parental overwhelm, take a breath all the way into your belly. Imagine it's a sigh of relief. Sighs help you stop and center yourself instead of reacting to the "should" in your head. SEE: Notice what's going on. See your child. Are they happy? Are they close to tears? Are their fists balled in anger? START: Then, and only then, start listening, and start thinking about what an appropriate reaction would be. Do they need a hug? Some space? Something else? In the vein of Good Inside, this book offers a simple approach and practical, proven strategies any parent can use. It also explores parenting culture and why it has become more and more intense over recent decades. For anyone who wants a proven toolkit for resisting a parenting culture that shames them when they can't meet unrealistic expectations, Sigh, See, Start is your new go-to tool for joyful parenting.About the author Dr. Alison Escalante is a board-certified pediatrician with more than two decades of experience who has spent the last ten years exploring ways to equip parents to meet their children's needs.
