This week, Tommy is joined by actor and singer Jamie Campbell Bower, best known for playing the highly talked about villain Henry, aka Vecna, in the smash-hit Netflix series, Stranger Things. His performance has forever cemented him as being one of the most epic villains in the history of television and film. Jamie is currently in the middle of filming the fifth and final season of the series. You may also know Jamie from captivating audiences as Anthony in Tim Burton's 2007 gothic musical extravaganza, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and co-starring in The Moral Instruments: City of Bones, or from Fantastic Beasts, Twilight, and so many other impressive television and film credits. Today Jamie opens up about his brand new single “Home,” why he was delighted but also terrified to step into the country music space, how he often felt like he didn't belong while growing up and still sometimes feels that today, the fine line between maintaining privacy but also opening up in his music, a sneak peek into what filming the final season of Stranger Things has been like, if his voice ever gets hoarse from playing Vecna, why that voice is sacred to him, his brand new movie dropping June 28th called Horizon, why he wants to glamorize sobriety, the importance of embracing the beautiful moments in life, and how he is still getting used to all of the attention that comes with being on a hit tv show. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My guest this week is Grammy-nominated producer-engineer-scoring mixer Jason LaRocca, who has recorded and mixed music for major motion pictures, games and television. Known for mixing the score of "The Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power" series, Marvel's "Morbius" and more, Jason recently mixed the Grammy-nominated albums "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" and the "God of War: Ragnarok" soundtrack. He has also recorded and mixed for such top recording artists as Jay-Z, CeeLo Green, Fiona Apple, Schoolboy Q and Serj Tankian, of System of a Down. Jason was guest back on podcast #441 a couple of years ago, but I thought I'd have him back to give us an update about what's going on in television, gaming and film mixing. During the interview we spoke about the enormous number of tracks required to record Sweeny Todd, the differences between mixing a Broadway record and a game soundtrack, whether automation or clip gain is faster, his approach to immersive mixing, mixing trends in film and TV, and much more. I spoke with Jason from his studio in Los Angeles.  On the intro I looked at why the vinyl record backlog has decreased, and hit songs that almost didn't make the album.

This week, a Quinta-less Alan and Scott were joined by Lawfare legal fellow Saraphin Dhanani to talk through the week's big national security news, including:“Seoul Authority.” South Korea and the United States recommitted themselves to their close security relationship this past week, including through a state dinner and a new Washington Declaration that confirms that the United States will respond to any nuclear attack on South Korea with overwhelming force. What drove this public showing? And what impact will it have on the nuclear threat posed by North Korea?“The Uncanny X-Date.” The debate over raising the debt ceiling took on new urgency this week, when Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced that the United States might meet the ‘X-Date' at which it defaults on its obligations as soon as June 1. Yet there are few signs of a compromise, as House Republicans have dug in on a proposal that demands deep spending cuts while the Biden administration continues to push for a clean raise. Where will this debate lead?“Washington Contentious.” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan gave remarks at our own Brookings Institution this past week, laying out a new approach to international economic policy. What should we make of this new ‘Washington Consensus'?For object lessons, Alan recommended Matthew Continetti's (audio)book on American conservatism, "The Right." Scott decided to shil for his favorite (washable!) shoe brand (for men!), Rothy's. And Saraphin overcame her natural aversion to musicals to endorse the current Broadway run of Stephen Sondheim's classic, "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." Hosted on Acast. XXXIX. As the famed "demon barber of Fleet Street" gets ready to flash his razor and do his deeds once again in a new Broadway production, The Gilded Gentleman goes back in time to the early years of London's Victoria era to look at just how Sweeney Todd and his tale came to be.  Born in the world of the sensational and gruesome stories of the "penny dreadfuls", Sweeney Todd and his story were quite different from what theater audiences know today.  The episode features a very special treat - an interview with Sarah Rice who created the role of Johanna, Sweeney Todd's daughter in the original 1979 Broadway production of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street".  Sarah shares what it was like to get the role, how she went about creating the character, and most of all, what it was like to work with extraordinary colleagues such as Angela Lansbury, Len Cariou, and of course Stephen Sondheim and Hal Prince themselves.  In the interview, Sarah shares the most important lessons she learned from Stephen Sondheim and Angela Lansbury in particular.
