In this episode of Crime at Bedtime, we uncover the terrifying story of Robert Pickton—a pig farmer turned serial killer responsible for one of Canada's darkest chapters. For years, women disappeared from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside without a trace. What police eventually discovered on Pickton's farm would shock the nation and haunt investigators forever. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Today, it's off to the farmlands of British Columbia to discuss one of Canada's most notorious serial killers. From his tough upbringing to the pigsty way he lived his life, Robert Pickton grew up an outcast, but became power hungry after earning some money and discovering his enjoyment in mistreating sex workers. His behaviors escalated, as they often do, and soon Pickton was murdering these women, dismantling their bodies, and hiding them on his farm. Today, we'll tell the story. We chat about some interesting stories including Bill C-293 and the fear around that, Calgary putting signs up on How to Rake a Leaf Pile and Jump in it, The homeless encampment busted for Crimes, the election in BC, and funding from our tax dollars to insane things like researching gender in rock music, and new mask mandates in Toronto. We also read a listener email about incineration of garbage for energy and we go over some details regarding a facility in Canada, UCP may be refining Carbon Dioxide, the Edmonton infill 15 minute city project, Calgary Ctrain accident and mob to reach the shuttle buses, and Darren's crazy Ctrain story from many years ago. In the second half we get into Fentanyl being produced in Canada and exported out while we let tear rists in and get through the USA border, the vaccine study on Care Homes, the SIDS VAERS study with overt 2600 infant deaths, hate crimes in Canada with Death to Israel, Canada and USA, Ingersoll Lockwood hidden messages and Pickton scribble and the guy who woke up after OD while they were about to remove his organs. Psychologist Rolio May said, “Hate is not the opposite of love. Apathy is.” Over the course of the last three episodes, we've discussed how apathy paved the way for a horrific criminal to wreak havoc on the women of Vancouver. Willie Pickton was only allowed to continue his crimes, to rack up the number of bodies he did, because the government and the police didn't do their jobs, were apathetic to the cries for help coming from the downtown eastside. Today, we have finally reached the conclusion to this chilling story. Justice will finally be served, but just a little too late for too many women. Once an avalanche starts, there's nothing that can be done to stop it. You can prevent them, you can prepare for them, but by the time you start to hear the ice cracking, it's almost always too late. The case of Willie Pickton feels a little bit like an avalanche. For the past two episodes, the people in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside have been hearing ominous creaks, trying hard to determine what the cause is. Unfortunately for dozens of women, help wouldn't come in time. When we last left off, Willie Pickton was just starting his reign of terror over the women of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Nancy Clark was missing, along with several other women, whose disappearances would never be solved. The Pickton farm was quickly becoming a criminal headquarters, thanks to Dave Pickton's infatuation with the Hell's Angels gang. The Vancouver Police didn't care. The missing women were sex workers and addicts, and therefore, less worthy of effort. The horror of this story is not only the monstrous actions of Willie Pickton, but also the apathy of the same people that were supposed to protect and serve. In his book, Encyclopedia of Murder and Violent Crime, Eric Hickey wrote about a type of victim that he called, “the Less Dead”. These are people that are seen by the media or law enforcement as having less value than others. Usually sex workers, drug addicts, houseless people, and sexual or racial minorities. The case we're discussing today is about dozens of these types of victims. Women whose disappearances were ignored or were straight up covered up because they happened to be addicts or sex workers. One police officer told a woman's terrified family that the series of missing women were “just junkies and hookers. Don't waste our time.” These were human beings. With friends and families, hopes, dreams, stories, lives. The fact that the authorities ignored their disappearances for so long is one of the worst miscarriages of justice that we've seen in our decades of true crime study. This killer roamed the streets of Vancouver, like a shark swimming among a school of fish, unchecked and under the radar, taking almost 50 lives before anyone stopped him. Sources:Cameron, Stevie. Send Kris and Rob a Text Message.Between 1978 and 2001, the bustling streets of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside in British Columbia, Canada, masked a sinister secret. Over these years, at least 65 women vanished, seemingly swallowed by the night, leaving a trail of heartache and mystery. The authorities often turned a blind eye, attributing these disappearances to the women's involvement in drug addiction and the sex trade. But beneath the surface lurked a horror beyond imagination. In the mid 90s, Robert Pickton turned an old slaughter house on a pig farm into a dance club among other things. But when local women started going missing, it was soon revealed what meat was actually being processed on this farm. SUBSCRIBE TO SHAKEN AND DISTURBED ON YOUTUBE! Robert Pickton /// Part 1 /// 768 Part 1 of 2 www.TrueCrimeGarage.com This week we tell the tale of Robert Pickton, Canada's most infamous serial killer. Robert Pickton was a pig farmer turned serial killer who hit it big with the sale of a large portion of the family farm. Instead of using his riches for good, he hosted drug and alcohol fueled parties on his disgusting farm at a place called “The Piggie Palace.” Around this same time women started to disappear from a seedy area of Vancouver, known as “The Low Track.” It took the police longer than it should have to learn that they had a problem, a big one. Some mysteries remain with this case. No one is certain how many people Pickton killed. It also would seem like he must have had some help along the way. Who else is responsible? Anton Bueckert aka Crow Qu'appelle of Nevermore Media and Mike Kiernan stepdad to missing person found deceased Chelsea Poorman join us for a gruesome chat about murders in BC, cover up's by RCMP, the ongoing missing indigenous women and a deep cut into the Pickton Pig Farm case. We get into the Pickton story, especially since he was recently killed in jail just before day parole, the DNA from the case, Anton's Substack series - Canadian Nightmare, and the case of Mike's missing daughter and how he thought that was completely mishandled by the cops. We talk about the book "That Lonely Section of Hell". Was Pickton a fall guy for the Hells Angels or worse? Why did the cops not seem to investigate Chelsea's disappearance? Are there any hero's in this story? What was Piggies Palace and how can one of the brothers still be working for the city? What was the time frame for this whole case? How did Michael find evidence left over at the scene at the mansion in Shaughnessy? In the second half it get's worse if that is even possible. We talk about how this is still going on, how new highs are being hit in BC, or do they even know really how many women are missing? What about the 200,000 articles of evidence, and the 20 murders that he was not charged for? Why do they really wanna get rid of evidence and why was the VPD cockblocked by the RCMP? Is this racism? Why is this still going on? Was the 2010 Olympics a cover to cleanse the perception of Vancouver and area? What about the additional 80 victims? What was happening with the bodies? Is the pig meat contaminated with human meat? What was it about Trudeau from Anton's previous Substacks? Is this whole thing connected with wider global human trafficking problem? Welcome, my heathens welcome. Today, we're diving into the murky depths of one of Canada's most infamous cases. But before we unmask the monster, you know we need to set the scene. So, close your eyes, but not if you're driving, but picture it: Vancouver, British Columbia, late 1990s to early 2000s. A city renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the majestic Coast Mountains. It's a place where you can sip artisanal coffee while watching the rain drizzle softly on cobblestone streets; and the absolutely perfect backdrop for a tale as dark as this one. Now, let's zoom in a bit. Vancouver's Downtown Eastside – an area famous for its vibrant culture and infamous for its rampant poverty, addiction, and crime. Here, the streets are lined with a mix of historic buildings and the soul of those society often forgets. It's a place where hope and despair walk hand in hand. Our story, however, takes us just a bit further – to the rural suburb of Port Coquitlam. Ah, Port Coquitlam, where the air is thick with the smell of manure, and the local pig farmer, Robert Pickton, is more concerned with what's buried in his backyard than with hosting barn dances. Rolling green fields, quaint farmhouses, and a certain pig farm that, in hindsight, had more skeletons in its closet than an overworked Halloween store. But it wasn't just any pig farm. This was the infamous Pickton property, a sprawling 17-acre lot that seemed like any other – until you dug a little deeper. Literally.

Robert Pickton, one of Canada's most notorious serial killers, has died following an assault in prison, authorities announced on Friday. Pickton, 74, was attacked on May 19 at the Port-Cartier Institution in Quebec and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The Correctional Service of Canada confirmed Pickton's death in a statement, noting, “We are mindful that this offender's case has had a devastating impact on communities in British Columbia and across the country, including Indigenous peoples, victims, and their families. Our thoughts are with them.” Pickton, also known as "Willie," was convicted in 2007 of six counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the maximum parole ineligibility period of 25 years. His crimes involved luring female victims to his pig farm during a crime spree in the late 1990s and early 2000s near Vancouver. The case gained international attention due to the gruesome nature of his actions and the high number of victims. The remains or DNA of 33 women were discovered on Pickton's farm, and he once boasted to an undercover officer about killing a total of 49 women. During his trial, a witness testified that Pickton described how he strangled his victims and fed their remains to his pigs. Health officials even issued a tainted meat advisory, warning neighbors who might have bought pork from Pickton's farm that it could contain human remains. Cynthia Cardinal, whose sister Georgina Papin was among Pickton's victims, expressed relief at the news of his death. “This is gonna bring healing for, I won't say all families, I'll just say most of the families,” she said. “I'm like — wow, finally. I can actually move on and heal and I can put this behind me.” The police investigation into the Pickton farm began more than 22 years ago in the Vancouver suburb of Port Coquitlam. It turned into a years-long probe into the disappearances of dozens of women, many of whom were sex workers or drug addicts marginalized by society. Vancouver police faced criticism for not taking the missing persons cases seriously due to the victims' backgrounds. A 51-year-old inmate is currently in custody for the assault on Pickton, according to police spokesman Hugues Beaulieu. The Correctional Service of Canada has launched an investigation into the attack. “The investigation will examine all of the facts and circumstances surrounding the assault, including whether policies and protocols were followed,” the service stated. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc also commented on the incident, stating, “Earlier today, I was made aware of the death of an inmate at Port-Cartier Institution. At this time, my thoughts are with the families of the victims of this individual's heinous crimes.” Pickton's confirmed victims included Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, Andrea Joesbury, Brenda Ann Wolfe, Georgina Papin, and Marnie Frey. The tragic legacy of his crimes continues to impact the families and communities affected. British Columbia Supreme Court Justice James Williams, during Pickton's sentencing, described the case as one that “properly warrants the maximum period of parole ineligibility available to the court.” The conclusion of Pickton's life in prison marks the end of a dark chapter in Canadian criminal history, but the pain and memories of his actions remain with those who lost loved ones. Video with Subtitles. The Crimes of Robert Pickton" is a chilling podcast series hosted by Marc, delving into one of the most monstrous cases in criminal history. Marc grapples with the horror evoked by Robert Pickton's atrocities, from his slaughter of animals on his farm to his predatory targeting of vulnerable women. The podcast highlights systemic failures that allowed Pickton's reign of terror to persist for over two decades, despite numerous red flags and missed opportunities by the justice system. The narrative also explores recent developments, including controversy over the disposal of evidence from Pickton's farm, sparking opposition from victims' families and advocates for women's rights. The debate over preserving this evidence underscores the ongoing quest for justice and accountability. DNA evidence tied to Pickton's farm reveals a mass burial ground for human remains, with around eighty unidentified DNA profiles detected, including those of 33 women. The discovery of male DNA on evidence and remains raises questions about potential accomplices and adds complexity to the investigation. Marc reflects on visiting the Pickton farm and participating in a candlelight vigil with victims' families, emphasizing the stark reality of the case and the ongoing fight for justice. Despite Pickton's sentencing to life in prison in 2007, the families continue to face challenges in their quest for closure and accountability. Throughout the podcast, Marc aims to provide a clear breakdown of the events while respecting the profound impact on the victims' families and listeners, offering a narrative with discretion and sensitivity. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darkminddetective/message

n February 5, 2002, the arrest of Robert Pickton marked a pivotal moment in the investigation into the disappearances of numerous women in British Columbia, Canada. Constable Nathan Wells of the RCMP's Coquitlam Detachment played a crucial role in obtaining a search warrant after receiving information about Pickton's possession of an illegal firearm, specifically a Mac 10 FULL AUTO handgun. Prompted by a former truck driver for the Pickton family who disclosed the presence of illegal firearms on the property, law enforcement swiftly moved to secure a search warrant. The subsequent raid on Pickton's pig farm on February 5 revealed not only several illegal and unregistered firearms but also disturbing evidence linking missing women to the property. During the search, investigators uncovered women's clothing, shoes, jewelry, and even personal items like an asthma inhaler prescribed to Sereena Abotsway, one of the missing women. The discovery of Mona Wilson's blood in a motorhome further escalated the severity of the situation. Pickton was re-arrested on February 22, 2002, and initially charged with two counts of murder. However, as the investigation progressed, a staggering total of 26 murder charges were eventually laid against him. While in custody at the Surrey jail, Pickton unknowingly shared a cell with an undercover RCMP officer. Believing the officer to be another detainee, Pickton made chilling admissions, confessing to the murders of 49 women and expressing a desire to make it 50. Simultaneously, the Pickton pig farm transformed into the largest crime scene in Canadian history, with extensive forensic efforts undertaken to recover evidence. This included the collection of 200,000 DNA samples and the meticulous sifting through 383,000 cubic yards of soil in search of human remains, amounting to a staggering cost of nearly $70 million. Additionally, incriminating videotapes emerged, featuring conversations with Pickton's acquaintances. Scott Chubb, a friend of Pickton, recounted Pickton suggesting a method to kill a female heroin addict by injecting her with windshield washer fluid. Another tape revealed Pickton allegedly discussing his modus operandi for murdering sex workers, involving handcuffing, strangling, bleeding, and gutting them before feeding their remains to pigs. These tapes provided further damning evidence against Pickton, shedding light on the extent of his depravity and callousness. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darkminddetective/message

True Crime Podcast 2024 - REAL Police Interrogations, 911 Calls, True Police Stories and True Crime
Robert Willy Pickton "The Pig Farm Killer" Serial Killer The Pig Farmer Killer — He Killed 49 Women and Fed Them to Pigs Only to get caught trying to make his tally an “even 50” Robert William Pickton, aka “Willy” was a quiet Canadian man who grew up in a family of pig farmers. His family had been in the business of pig farming for three generations but by the time Pickton and his siblings inherited the pig farm, they'd only raise a few pigs on the farm and sell them to friends and neighbors. They, in fact, sold parts of the inherited land for large sums of money, not having much intention of continuing the family business. However, it wasn't pig farming that made Willy rather infamous in Canada and the rest of the world. He is known to have murdered as many as 49 women, having been arrested due to his admitted “sloppiness” in trying to make his tally an “even 50” or the “big five-O.” A Contradicting Tale of Quiet Nature and Rave Parties Willy was described by most of his friends as a pretty “quiet and simple guy” who didn't really have any visible devious habits that would draw much attention. He wasn't known to be much of a drinker, or didn't really do any substance abuse, nor was he ever known to be too violent. After neglecting the original pig farming business inherited from their parents, Willy and his siblings registered a non-profit charity by the name of “The Piggy Palace Good Times Society” with the Canadian government in 1996. They claimed to “organize, co-ordinate, manage and operate special events, functions, dances, shows, and exhibitions on behalf of service organizations, sports organizations, and other worthy groups”. What these not-for-profit events eventually ended up being were a series of rave parties where members of music bands and other partygoers would come and engage in substance abuse and also engage with many sex workers. The events were quite large and attracted as many as 2,000 people. After some complaints about the nature of activities held under the name of the charity, and some ruckus created at a New Year's Eve party in 1998, police intervened and banned any future parties at the pig farm, and also stripped the non-profit status of the society in the following year for lack of sufficient financial statements. The Murders & The Discovery In March 1997, Willy was first charged for the attempted murder of a sex worker called Wendy, who had been stabbed several times following an argument at the farm. Wendy had managed to grab the weapon off Willy, stabbed him back, and escaped despite being handcuffed by him. Pickton received treatment at a nearby hotel and was also later released on bail. The charges were dismissed in January of 1998. It was later that year that the injunction was brought to the farm and the charity to host any events and parties. One of the workers at the farm, Bill Hiscox, noted that many of the women that visited the farm eventually went missing and reported his suspicions to the local police. In February of 2002, when the police visited the farm with a search warrant, they found multiple items belonging to the missing women. Willy and his brother David Pickton were arrested on charges of owning illegal weapons. While they were later released, police maintained surveillance on the brothers. On further investigation, police suspected Willy of a series of murders of the various missing women, and over the course of the year, Willy was charged for a total of fifteen first-degree murders. Over the next three years, by October of 2005, the tally of the first-degree murder charges had gone up to a staggering twenty-seven. Excavations at the farm continued for over a whole year, and cost about $70mn — making it one of the most expensive investigations in Canada's history. The excavations revealed cut skulls, broken jaws, and other bodily remains of multiple women including the DNA of as many as 33 different women.

Robert Willy Pickton "The Pig Farm Killer" Serial KillerThe Pig Farmer — He Killed 49 Women and Fed Them to Pigs Only to get caught trying to make his tally an “even 50”Robert William Pickton, aka “Willy” waKiller s a quiet Canadian man who grew up in a family of pig farmers. He is known to have murdered as many as 49 women, having been arrested due to his admitted “sloppiness” in trying to make his tally an “even 50” or the “big five-O.”A Contradicting Tale of Quiet Nature and Rave PartiesWilly was described by most of his friends as a pretty “quiet and simple guy” who didn't really have any visible devious habits that would draw much attention. The Murders & The DiscoveryIn March 1997, Willy was first charged for the attempted murder of a sex worker called Wendy, who had been stabbed several times following an argument at the farm.Wendy had managed to grab the weapon off Willy, stabbed him back, and escaped despite being handcuffed by him. is a chilling true crime story that delves into the mysterious discovery that occurred in Mission, B.C., in 1995. In the heart of this small town, near a swamp, a local woodworker named Bill Wilson stumbled upon a severed skull with a vertebra still attached. Little did he know that this macabre finding would kickstart a harrowing tale that would captivate the local community and reach far beyond. The podcast and social media description could go something like this: "Welcome to 'Lost and Found: The Story of Jane Doe's Severed Skull,' a gripping true crime podcast that takes you on a journey into the heart of a chilling enigma buried in time. In February 1995, Bill Wilson, a local woodworker in Mission, B.C., made a grim discovery near a swamp—a severed skull with a vertebra still attached. This discovery marked the beginning of a story that would send shockwaves through our community. Join us as we uncover the mysterious circumstances surrounding Jane Doe, a Caucasian/Indigenous female aged 20 to 40, who likely met her fate between 1985 and 1995. Her missing teeth hinted at possible dentures, and the gruesome detail that her skull was cut in half with a power saw only deepens the mystery. But that's not all. This story takes a dark turn when it's revealed that Jane Doe's bones were connected to a sinister place: Robert Pickton's pig farm in Port Coquitlam. This notorious serial killer, also known as 'Willy' Pickton, was convicted of the murders of several women in Vancouver, making him one of Canada's most prolific serial killers. Explore the global quest for answers as Jane Doe's DNA profile and composite drawings were shared with Interpol and its 188 member countries. Discover the shocking connections between her and other victims, like Marnie Frey, Georgina Faith Papin, Brenda Ann Wolfe, Andrea Joesbury, Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, and many more. As we delve into this harrowing tale, we'll also examine the unsettling questions that arise. Did Robert Pickton act alone, or could there have been others involved? The complexity of the crimes, the duration of his activities, and the manipulation tactics used raise intriguing possibilities.
Ret. Police Officer Dan Jones and I discuss the disturbing trend of dehumanizing Indigenous women in Canada. The most recent case in point: the refusal of the Manitoba premiere to search for the remains of Marcedes Myran and Morgan Harris. This episode may be triggering for some as we discuss murder, violence, sexual abuse, policing, homelessness, sex workers, and the Pickton murders.

This week we will be releasing the entire Patreon Willy Pickton series to bring awarness in this MMIW crisis. May 5th is National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls. We hope you enjoy the extended episode. At least 65 women disappeared from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside between 1978 and 2001. A man known as Willie Pickton owned and operated a pig farm in nearby Port Coquitlam during this time. He was eventually charged with the murder of 26 women however he claimed the number was closer to 50. This monster was convinced on 6 charges and sentenced to life in prison. While in prison Willie wrote a manuscript that was later sent to a publisher who titled the book “Pickton In his own words”. Willie's farm became the largest crime scene Canada has ever seen, and led to the largest serial killer investigation in the history of the country. During this investigation the public became aware of a larger issue that has been plaguing Canada; The issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. A government inquiry later concluded that “blatant failures” by police was a large factor. Including prejudice against sex workers, sex trade, the homeless, and racism against indigenous women led to a massive tragedy. Please don't forget to check out our new merch store at https://indigenoustales.threadless.com/ Merch store- https://indigenoustales.threadless.com/Email us at info@behillnetwork.com Also check out our Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/indigenous_tales/And our TikTok -https://www.tiktok.com/@indigenous_talesAmanda Bland Dallas area Bakeryinstagram - https://www.instagram.com/cupidsweetsbakes/Cupid Sweets- https://www.facebook.com/cupidsweets

Dear listeners, there are quite a bit of minutia regarding the interrogation of Robert Pickton after his arrest. To be honest with you, it is a bit tedious. Suffice to say that the detectives, mainly detective Don Adam, used all the technniques in the book to get Pickton to talk. It was not easy. The police were impressed with Pickton's ability to go hours upon hours without food, water or going to the toilet. He just sat relaxed in his chair and never really answered the questions and statements put towards him. This went on for over eleven hours. During this time, Pickton went far in insinuating that he was responsible for several murders, but he never flat out admitted to it. As stated in earlier episodes, Pickton was not stupid.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. The smell was ripe with decomposing food, dirt and mold. They got to the back of the trailer where there wasn't even a proper bed. Only some sleeping bags and plastic tarp on the floor. Robert Pickton gave Sandra four $20 bills and the pair got naked. Sandra got on all fours and Pickton had sex with her for 5 minutes before ejaculating inside the condom she had made him put on. Afterwards she asked to used the toilet, which he allowed. Once locked inside the toilet, she immediately tried to shoot up more drugs to get rid of the feeling of disgust she felt after having had sex with the foul smelling, dirty and severely ugly man who called himself Willie. This time, however, she was unable to find a suitable vein and couldn't get high. Annoyed she emerged after about ten minutes and asked to use the telephone. As she was bending over the phone, dialling Stu in order to inform him that she was on the way back with money, she sensed Pickton looming right behind her.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast.
