60MW Towers always gets positive feedback about the beginning section of the ABC of gaming shows, where the guys chat about their personal lives and are not afraid to open up their feelings to the listeners. With that in mind, here is of another branch in the ABC series: ABC of Fording Ahead (this is the 4th show in this series). In these shows Ben, Chris and Alan (see what they did there, still keeping the host initials despite a slight change in the staff rota for this particular series) chat openly about their lives (both past and present) and how they try and stay positive, despite the inevitable ups and downs of life. Show notes: 1. Don’t feed the trolls; don’t let people live rent-free in your head. We spent a lot of time discussing this. You have the choice to keep reliving conversations or actions of others in your head or you can let it go. When you keep mentally fixated on thoughts that anger or upset you, it’s only hurting YOU! The other person likely has not given it a second thought. They are going about their business, while you spiral into negativity. Let it go! Engaging in conversation, especially on social media, can be fun, but more often than not, it can create irritation. If you find yourself engaged in a conversation going nowhere, abandon it and forget it. Don’t feed the trolls! 2. There’s strong evidence that acts of kindness don’t just make others happy; they make you feel good as well. Even just taking a moment to do someone a small favor or randomly sending a text message can put you in a better frame of mind, breaking you out of negative thinking. If you get into a habit of doing something compassionate for another person every time you’re feeling down, anxious or hopeless, it’ll soon become automatic and your negative periods will last for increasingly shorter times. 3. One of the best ways to train your brain to stay positive is to find something you love to do, such as a sport, hobby or pursuit. Whenever your thoughts are focused on your own personal joy, you’ll strengthen the associated neural pathways in your brain and will find more to be joyful about as a result. 4. “Run a mile a day, read a book a week; Strengthen the mind, strengthen the body.” If you want to be a better positive thinker, take an honest critical look at how you treat your body and identify potential areas for improvement. Diet, exercise and overall fitness plays a huge factor in your overall mental health. It doesn’t have to be anything radical. Start by just moving more, maybe a walk or some basic pushups and get to a point where you are more active today than you have been. Part of your health is also your spiritual health (whether it’s religion, or Gaia, or karma or whatever is in your inner core), you need to have that third leg to keep you upright. 5. Show me your friends and I’ll show you who you are. If you are having a hard time staying positive, see if you have surrounded yourself with a roomful of downers. You tend to act like those you hang around with, so choose your circle carefully. This isn’t to say you abandon those who need you. However, if you are struggling with positivity, it becomes much harder for you to be able to help him or her through their issues. 6. When you lay down at night, take a moment and consciously recall at least three individual things that went well for you that day. These do not need to be big. In fact, it’s more important to remind yourself of the small positives. Maybe you hit all of the traffic lights on the way home. Maybe your dog made you laugh. Perhaps a family member randomly said they loved you. Whatever it is, force yourself to recall those three moments from your day. The more you do this, the more it will become automatic. Soon, you’ll be noticing the really good things happening around you all the time and you won’t ignore them. Once you see you are surrounded by positives, when you are dealing with a negative, it no longer seems overwhelming. What it's all about: I am going to do it. I am going to feed the troll. This is something that happened to me on about a past show a month ago. I was going to wait awhile to do a show on this. However, I just read a Facebook from a friend about someone that they knew doing the same thing to them. I'll explain my situation in some detail as well as let you know what to do and not to do when you are also faced with one. The Spirit Guide of the Week is the Vulture and the Dream Symbol is Tree. The question of the day is again,... do you believe in giants? Much of our history, past and present has given credence to massive human-like beings, but they remain in lore. I'll be the first to admit that I personally didn't ever care much for the bigfoot and cryptozoology side of conspiracy things, as it didn't have much broad spectrum impact, but it being tied into the grander scheme is far more fascinating. On today's episode I'm talking again with Nate Henry of the band Sherwood and the podcast Don't Feed the Trolls. Nate came on last time with some bigfoot information, but after some health issues that put him out of commission for a good while, he now comes with much more important implications that make the theory far more deep and interesting. Will I change my stance on caring about bigfoot? Is bigfoot a demon alien species? And what role do ticks play in all of this and trying to undermine Nate's message and beliefs?  All that and more on today's episode of The System is Down episode 145: 145: Bigfoot, Nephilim, Aliens, and Ticks, w. We be drankin’ and we be chattin’ about our listener mail! We are back with another minisode with YOUR thoughts and stories on a light albeit frustrating subject: INTERNET TROLLS! As a podcast our strategy of ignoring and blocking is highly effective but painfully boring. We solicited stories from listeners about how they deal with internet trolls. With their help we get a bunch of novel options for managing those anonymous under-bridge dwellers. We hear a voicemail from culinary historian Sarah Lohman (http://sarahlohman.com/) who explains her tiers of trolldom and how she responds to each. Cara Nicoletti (https://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/26/realestate/cara-nicolettibutcher-baker-and-author.html) , brooklyn-based triple threat (butcher, baker, and author), shares the ways she cares for herself amidst frequent sexist attacks online. The Wine, Women and Words podcast (https://www.winewomenwordspodcast.com/) and Karina Sahlin from We're Just Here To Help podcast (https://anchor.fm/were-just-here-to-help) both weigh in with their most creative methods of countering trolls. Annie, our favorite listener, wrote in with a deliciously fun spin on responding to the worst people on the internet-- Troll Cakes (http://www.trollcakes.com/) , the bakery/detective agency here that will send a cake to your troll with their comments written on it. One of the hazards of being alive is the fact that we’re never going to please everyone. We’re going to have people that will not like what we do. People are going to criticize whatever it is we’re doing. And in the 21st century, this is nowhere more apparent than in social media. This weeks episode is about how to be your best online. I’m always amazed and saddened by the vitriol and hate that I see online, especially towards women. It’s as if the anonymity of being online, that separation of the digital world, they aren’t talking to a real person. I read comments and the like from others saying things that they would probably never say in person. That social pressure to not be an asshole somehow gets ignored. That distance gives them license to express their most vulgar selves with no repercussions. Compassion So how do we deal with criticism? How do we deal with vitriolic tweets and Facebook trolls? >“When someone criticizes you, they do so because they believe they are right. They can only go by their views, not yours. If their views are wrong, it is they who will suffer the consequences. Keeping this in mind, treat your critics with compassion. When you are tempted to get back at them, remind yourself, ‘They did what seemed to them to be the right thing to do.’” >— Epictetus What Epictetus is reminding us here is that someone else’s opinion is just that - their opinion. It has very little to do with you but says volumes about them. What they are expressing is their view of the world. Often, they don’t have anything to truly criticize other than they don’t like your point of view. They may feel insecure about themselves, and they don’t like the facts presented because it threatens their worldview. I see this a lot in political areas. People often adopt an “us vs. them” mentality where anything that doesn’t come from their “team” is wrong. Often all they can do is threaten or insult the author because they can’t offer up any real counter-arguments. The next thing Epictetus advises us it to have compassion for our critics. And why is that? Why should we be compassionate towards someone that says mean, cruel, vulgar things to us? Because they are the ones that suffer if their views are wrong. The fact that they can be so cruel tells you that they are pretty unhappy people if they can get so easily riled up and jump quickly to insults. The easiest way to do this as well is to simply look at the facts. If all they have to offer is insults, then you can easily dismiss it because there are no facts involved. If they actually have something factual and logical, you should be delighted because then you have something you may able to learn from and improve yourself. Confidence in Yourself >“I have often wondered how it is that every man loves himself more than all the rest of men, but yet sets less value on his own opinion of himself than on the opinion of others.” >— Marcus Aurelius When someone does disagree with us, how do we react? Do we get riled up? Do we dash off an angry tweet to our critics? Why do we feel angry anyway? If we are acting in a way that we are proud of then nothing that someone else says should upset us. Usually, when we act in a way that comes from anger, we are insecure about something. If we are secure in who we are, if we are holding to our values, then others opinions don’t matter. When we get into a flame war with a critic, we are no longer in charge of ourselves. When we let the opinions of others dictate our actions, then we are giving them control of us. If we get mad or get depressed because of the criticism of others, we have given them control over our emotions. We become the victim. Being the Critic So how should we act online, and in real life when giving criticism to others? >“If it is not right, do not do it. If it is not true, do not say it.” >— Marcus Aurelius This simple maxim should be our guide in what we say and do. As Jiminy Cricket once said, “Let your conscience be your guide.” Or put more bluntly from Will Wheaton, “Don’t be a dick.” Most of us know when we’re being an ass and when we’re not living up to our best selves. If we have something honest and helpful to contribute, then do so. If not, it might be best to leave well enough alone. Spending time arguing with online trolls is pretty much a waste of time, and you really don't change anyone’s mind. Usually, you end up getting dragged into a bunch of shit, and each side gets more and more dug in and convinced that they’re on the right side. The world is full of haters. As we spend more time online and less time in person, and as political divisions become wider, I think we’re only going to see upticks in the vitriol. We need to be sure that we don’t get sucked into the vortex of online hate. By taking the time to be compassionate towards our critics thoughtful on our responses to other people and realize that they are coming from a place where they think they are doing what is best, then we could be part of the solution, not the problem. We delve deep into the aspects of true vulnerability and the dangers of creating a facade.Nate Henry: https://twitter.com/NateHenrysaysDon't Feed The Trolls Podcast: http://www.trollspodcast.com/ iTunes link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/dont-feed-the-trolls/id1078770216?mt=2Tyson Motsenbocker episode: https://soundcloud.com/trollspodcast/episode-25-grief-and-loss-with-tyson-motsenbockerSherwood (Nate's Band): http://sherwoodmusic.net/Support the show and mental health charities on our Patreon!Mr. Feels Twitter: https://twitter.com/MrFeelsPodcastLaura: https://www.instagram.com/laurabensonmusic/Tyler: https://www.instagram.com/tylermaymedia/ https://twitter.com/TylerMayMediaFind more resources and listen to other episodes at https://mrfeelspodcast.com/Feel free to email us: mrfeelspodcast@gmail.comMusic by Driftless Pony ClubThanks for listening to Mr. Feels! On this episode, I speak with Matt MacDonald of rock band The Classic Crime, signed to BC Music. Matt and I spoke before The Classic Crime played in Portland, Oregon in celebration of their debut album Albatross, in which they played it in its entirety with original guitarist Justin DuQue. As Matt would later describe, our conversation has a very "fly on the wall" sound, as I mistakenly recorded this with the wrong mic! Yikes! (Don't worry, I'll be more careful next week!) We talk about: - Albatross 10-year tour - What albums meant the most to Matt when he was in high school - Memories while writing and recording Albatross with producer Michael Baskette - What song off Albatross the band hates - (a third) Successful Kickstarter campaign - What future material will look like lyrically Facebook: Facebook.com/TheClassicCrime Support The Classic Crime KICKSTARTER campaign: http://j.mp/tcckickstarter SUBSCRIBE/RATE Matt's podcast "Don't Feed The Trolls": TrollsPodcast.com Support this podcast by leaving a FIVE STAR rating and review on iTunes.
