Welcome back to The Business of Wellness! This week, host Jaclyn London, RD, sits down with renowned New York City-based cardiologist, internal medicine and concierge medicine physician, Dr. Erica Jones, MD, for an in-depth, behind-the-scenes, honest conversation about obesity medications and the alarming rise in the rate of cancer diagnoses among young adults. Why GLP-1's, why now? Dr. Jones explains the cardiovascular benefits that make GLP-1 medications a desirable tool in modern medical practic; the benefits vs. risks of taking these medications for weight-loss and management; the ideal population who will benefit from taking GLP-1's; how these medications are altering patients' food tastes and eating patterns, and how permanent they are; the most common (and uncommon) side effects of GLP-1 medications, their severity, and Dr. Jones' tips for predicting & understanding patient tolerance. Then, we get into the long-term considerations for use of GLP-1's, including a critical discussion on the rapid & widespread adoption of GLP-1's, long-term risks of using these medications (what we know and what we don't know yet…), and the need for comprehensive evaluation and medical nutrition therapy. We also dive into the media coverage about obesity medications: How is the celebrity endorsement of GLP-1's impacting everyday patients? Dr. Jones shares her perspective on that, and in what ways the media portrayal of GLP-1's has influenced interest and/or the cultural discourse about weight-loss. Jaclyn shares her perspective on the efficacy of Medical Nutrition therapy as a part of the clinical picture for patients adopting GLP-1's as an intervention for obesity, and they conclude on this topic by sharing considerations for long-term use– including what the packaging insert says vs. what's happening in real life physicians' offices. Next, Jaclyn & Dr. Jones dive into the concerning data from the American Cancer Society about the rising rates of cancer diagnosis in young people; Princess Catherine of Wales' cancer diagnosis at the age of 42; the contributing factors that may be playing a role in this concerning statistic; new modalities for screening; lifestyle related risk factors for specific types of cancers; new & emerging technologies for cancer treatment; balancing what's new and available to us as screening tools with creating & cultivating feelings overwhelm, anxiety & fear; the pros and cons of full-body MRI screenings, and Dr. Jones' most effective strategies for determining what interventions are right for most. Tune in for a comprehensive and enlightening episode that discusses a medical practitioner's real-life experience with prescribing GLP-1 medications and all of the myriad complexities & questions that accompany this treatment modality, plus a thoughtful discussion on the emerging cancer trends affecting younger adults today. In 2015, Erica Jones' daughter, Whitney Brown, was killed in a drive-by shooting. Who did it remains unknown. Brown's case is among the 1,000-plus from 2014 to 2023 that still haven't been solved, according to a joint investigation by St. Louis Public Radio, APM Reports and the Marshall Project. Jones talks about how grief has changed her family, and why she is still seeking answers — and justice. She also discusses Voice of the Voiceless STL, a nonprofit support group she founded to help fellow St. Louisans who have lost loved ones to gun violence.

Women lifting up other women in the construction industry is critical to our efforts to be a more inclusive industry. As part of my journey of making new construction industry friends in Kansas City I met the amazing Erica Jones, Vice President of MMC Corporation and Founder of On The Rise. This incredible program elevates women in the construction industry during a half-day workshop. Erica is a wonderful example of someone who beyond leading marketing for a $1.2 billion company also steps up as a volunteer to lead change in our industry. Erica joined the Greatness Podcast to share many examples of how to support the success of women and minorities, intentionally, in our industry; and also shares her success in building the marketing team for MMC as the organization grew from $300 million to their current size. Her advice to women - be advocates for other women, lift women up, be a mentor, pay it forward. Let's embrace that we bring different things to the table - it makes every organization better.
Americans' New Year's resolutions list, but many aren't confident they can turn their money situation around. Especially as credit card interest rates soar past twenty percent and Americans across the country rake up historically high amounts of debt, many aren't sure where to begin. On The Rundown, personal finance expert George Kamel breaks down why so many Americans are facing extreme amounts of debt and what steps they should take to regain control of their finances. 2023 had some dismal moments. Every year does. But on the FOX News Rundown, we're always looking for some positive stories to tell, and today, we revisit our interview with the President of the Mississippi Association of Educators, Erica Jones. Mississippi students had some of the lowest test scores in the country. But over several years, Jones helped her state turn things around pretty dramatically. Jones told us her inspiring story and what other states could learn from Mississippi. Plus, commentary from FOX's Will Cain. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

America's students struggled during the pandemic, as shown by school test scores dropping to record lows nationwide. However, U.S. schools had been struggling even before school closures. For example, in 2013, Mississippi was ranked as the second-worst state for low-income student reading scores. Educators in the state decided to take matters into their own hands, and by 2022, Mississippi saw its rank rise to #2. Teacher and president of the Mississippi Association of Educators, Erica Jones, joins the Rundown to discuss how she and teachers in her state used phonics to revolutionize the old ways schools taught reading, how improved reading skills among students have led to better performances in all subjects, and how other educators and teachers can apply the strategies they're using in Mississippi to see similar positive results. The United States military is facing a major recruitment issue. As multiple reports have surfaced showing enlistment numbers growing stagnant, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth says it is unlikely that they will meet this year's projection of 65,000 new recruits. In an effort to offset this trend, both the Air Force and the Army are marketing the armed forces to legal immigrants, advertising it as a way to fast-track their citizenship. Retired Army Lieutenant General and Director of the Center for National Defense, Tom Spoehr, joins the podcast to talk about why nearly 70 percent of Americans are ineligible to serve, how the military is pursuing new recruiting tactics, and the correlation between the declining service numbers and the dwindling veteran population. Plus, commentary from host of OutKick's Tomi Lahren is Fearless, Tomi Lahren. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On an airplane, an oxygen mask descends in front of you. What do you do? As we all know, the first rule is to put on your own oxygen mask before you assist anyone else. Only when we first help ourselves can we effectively help others.Just like that analogy, it is very important that we take some time away from the noise, to unplug, get away, and take care of ourselves. The challenge is not to be perfect — it is to be whole. Jane Fonda I have the privilege of having a heart-to-heart chat with three beautiful ladies as we tackle the subject of Self-Care. ~Nikki Nye, who is a wife, mother, believer, and the owner of Nicki Nye Cakes.~Erica Jones who is also a wife, mother, and the owner of Gem Esthetics.~Caressa Wilson, who is my daughter, wife, mother, and owner of Beau's Customs. We will discuss why it's important to unplug from the world. The importance of Self Care. What does self-care look like?Don't you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 1 Cor. 3:16You can watch the live recording on Facebook @I Am Claudine Hicks

This special episode held on Thursday, August. 13, 2020, highlighted National Black Women's Equal Pay Day and featured guests Dr. Wilma Mosley Clopton, filmmaker; Dr. Safiya Omari, City of Jackson, MS Chief of Staff; Mrs. Geraldine Bender, AFT-MS; Dr. Akemi Stout, president of the Jackson Federation of Teachers; Erica Jones, MS Association of Educators president. MS-BWR's efforts coincide with a national push to encourage conversations about key issues impacting Black women in the United States. Along with MS-BWR's signature events in Mississippi, various organizations across the country are hosting their own unique events in their respective states to bring awareness to the cause. Mississippi is the only state in the U.S. without an Equal Pay Law. "The pay gap for black women in Mississippi is extreme: 56 cents to the dollar. The typical Black woman must work until August 2020 to be paid what the typical White man was paid at the end of December 2018. Over a 40-year career, the average black woman in Mississippi will lose $849,480 to the wage gap. As a result, Mississippi has the highest poverty rate in the country for women overall (20 percent, compared to 12.4 percent nationally)." Our goal with Black Women's Equal Pay Day is to educate the public and empower black women with additional information about these challenges and what they mean for our families. We also want to provide insight into some of the ways we can address them, including critical policy changes, more civic engagement, coordinating our efforts and holding our leaders more accountable for improving our state and nation for everyone. MS-BWR address critical issues related to the pay gap in Mississippi and provided some possible solutions in a 2019 report Women Driving Change: A Pathway to a Better Mississippi that was co authored with the National Women's Law Center. Other key statistics from the report include: For Black women who live at the intersection of race and sex biases, the poverty rate in Mississippi (36.2 percent) is nearly three times the rate for white women (13.3 percent). Mississippi families headed by single mothers face the worst poverty rate in the state and one of the highest poverty rates in the country (49.6 percent, compared to 34 percent nationally.) These barriers are not only holding women back; they are holding back Mississippi families, businesses, and the entire state economy. But it doesn't have to be that way. For example, if women in Mississippi received equal pay with comparable men, the poverty for working women would be cut by more than half, the poverty rate among children with working mothers would be reduced by one-third, and the Mississippi economy would have added $4.15 billion in wage and salary income (equivalent to 3.9 percent of 2016 GDP) to its economy.
Long-term care facilities face outbreak risks as state battles the worst period of community transmission. Then, additional unemployment benefits made possible through the CARES Act have expired. We examine what it means for Mississippi's recipients.Plus, education professionals continue to navigate the ever-changing challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.Segment 1:Health experts say there have been astounding outbreaks of the Coronavirus in Mississippi's long term care facilities. LTCs, which include nursing homes, care for Mississippians who are the most at risk for COVID-19. In May, the health department tested every resident and worker in these facilities. The early results were promising - with the number of outbreaks shrinking below 75. But now, the virus is once again threatening the state's most at-risk population. Mississippi has over 170 facilities with outbreaks of the virus - after reaching a record high of 203 outbreaks last week. Tony Hamrick, President of the Mississippi Healthcare Association, shares more on the recent rise of outbreaks with our Kobee Vance.Segment 2:Mississippians collecting unemployment benefits will have to begin providing work searchesaccording to the state department of employment security. More than 430,000 Mississippians have filed for unemployment benefits over the past three months.Executive Director Jackie Turner says the governor's executive order, which waived job searches because of the coronavirus pandemic is about to expire. Eddie McCurdy of Ridgeland wants to work. He says he was laid off in March at a theatre, brought back to work last month and then laid off again. The 26-year old tells our Desare Frazier the federal supplement has helped during difficult times.Segment 3:When the calendar turns to August, it usually means students and teachers are priming for the return to school. But, in the environment of a lingering pandemic, the questions of how and if students go to school is ever-changing. Governor Tate Reeves, who has been advocating for in-person learning, acknowledges school leaders are in a tough spot. So far, one school district has returned to on-campus learning. In Corinth, teachers and students returned to the classroom last Tuesday. By Friday, the district was reporting it's first positive case of COVID-19. Erica Jones is with the Mississippi Association of Educators. She tells our Ashley Norwood education professionals are facing a number of challenges during this pandemic See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Part 2 - Erica’s astrology work is titled Real Imaginal which is a project about “revitalizing the human relationship to the planetary archetype of Neptune”, which she writes is a “process of re-enchantment, defined in part by the attempt to regain a sense of belonging in a living, aware cosmos.” If you visit her website at realimaginal.com, you can take a pretty deep dive with her on what it means to be re-enchanted, and as you’ll find out in this episode, Erica is a really deep perceiver and thinker. This conversation opened me up to new ways of thinking about one of my biggest planetary companions, Pluto :) and as a very Plutonic person myself that was also healing, to understand from a new angle why I’ve felt and perceived so *intensely* my whole life and why that has put me on a personal development path and driven my interest in the esoteric. Now as an astrologer practicing Pluto-centered astrology I spend so much time with Pluto that this conversation had a way of supercharging me and I trust will also be soul food for thought for you as well. This episode is very astrological in nature but also very accessible to anyone interested in psychology and archetype, which is how we enter this conversation, as we speak to what the psychological underworld is. After we laid out some psychological foundations for our discussion we dialogued about Pluto, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune and how these archetypes differ when expressed at different octaves of themselves - i.e. the higher expressions of all these planets when healing and "wholing" work has occurred (which we also discuss what that is and how we do it).Connect with Erica on Instagram @realimaginalastrologyConnect with me on instagram @sabrinamonarchRead the weekly astrology forecasts at www.monarchastrology.comMusic by Danny Lampton of The Light & The Weight See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dear Spinning Circle - Thank you for listening in to Wool n' Spinning Radio this month! I am really excited about this episode because we are being joined by Erica Jones of Weavolution. Erica has been instrumental in my own new weaving journey, offering knowledge and kindness throughout my early learning process. We first got talking when she helped me understand the differences between 'harness' and 'shaft' looms, how to refer to them and got me really thinking about weaving in general. On this episode, we talk about weaving with our handspun and Erica helps to dispel some myths that have become common in weaving today. We talk about rigid heddle weaving and why one might move to a table or floor loom. We discuss some of the differences between commercial weaving yarns and handspun - at one point, we get into quite a technical conversation about sett. If you aren't sure what we mean, please know we will be having more of these conversations in coming months in the community.Erica mentions the resource that is Sara Lamb's blog and website, which can be found here. Join astrologer Erica Jones and systemic family constellations facilitator Kirsten Love Lauzon for Conversation Two of Healing Earth in the Real Imaginal. NOTE Kirsten would like make a clarifying addendum to Part 2:In this episode, I say that the prefrontal cortex "is what separates us from non-human animals"--and that statement doesn't feel resonant with my core truth, so I want to clarify my belief. My sense is that the PFC connects us more than it separates us, for example, social intelligence is thought to depend on the PFC, but mammals without frontal lobe functioning, like dolphins, still show social behaviors so other structures in the brain must also be involved, or provide similar functioning in different species. In short, I would like to recognize that much of consciousness and the brain remain a mystery, especially when it comes to the lived experiences of other beings! In this series of conversations, we explore the topic of relational neuroscience—which is essentially the study of the impact and effect of other people’s presence on our nervous systems, well-being and development. With the work of international speaker and facilitator Sarah Peyton as our launch pad, we focus in on healing from personal and collective trauma and also explore the interconnection of other topics such as astrology, modern consciousness studies and systemic/family constellations.
