In today’s episode, Suzanne Tabert from the Cedar Mountain Herb School goes in depth on one of the northwest’s most ubiquitous trees, the Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)! She covers harvesting, preparations, parts used, and there’s even some story-telling. Enjoy! A message from Suzanne: When I started teaching herbal workshops and programs more than 30 years ago, I was simply overwhelmed. I was incredibly excited, of course, but I had so many questions. Am I doing this right? Am I really ready to be teaching others? How do I make sure I'm making a positive impact on my students? There wasn't anyone near to mentor me. I was on my own. In my decades in this industry, I've amassed a huge amount of knowledge not only about herbalism, but about teaching, building a business, bringing in students who are as passionate about plants as I am, and so much more. I taught myself how to teach, and lots of mistakes were made. Through all the trial-and-error, I came out on the other side an excellent herbalist, teacher, and business owner. However, I always wished I had had someone to show me the way. Now that I've made it to where I am today, I have made it my mission to help others with their own journeys. I, like many of you, have found my calling in spreading my passion for plants and herbs to others! And I am ready to help you do the same. If you feel the pull to craft your own herbal workshops and programs and build a successful herb school, this is your time to do it! I have put together the be-all-end-all of training programs this year to take you every step of the way through that process. So, what are you waiting for?  Program size is very limited. Registering through HerbRally gets you a $200 discount! How cool is that?! She has been teaching herbal medicine for 30 years, with plans to continue throughout her lifetime. Thanks for listening! Host Brian Quain sits with Max Dunn and Jung Kim of the ARIA Award winning Australian band Gang of Youths on this episode of Sharing Cans With Bands. Quain goes to Portland, OR with cans of beer from Hidden Springs, Green Bench, and Ellipsis and opens them with the boys at the famous Portland venue, the Doug Fir. Of course we find out how they met, how they formed and what it's like being in a band. Tons of laughs while we talk about the differences of Australia to the United States. But as the beers pour, we get deep into David Le'aupepe's music, how the boys cope with David's mental health in the past, and how open and honest their latest album, "Go Farther In Lightness" is to how David lives with his mental health. Gang of Youths have never held back in storytelling and awareness with mental health and suicide, and this episode is the same. We appreciate everyone who made this episode happen, and we know, if you haven't already, you will be listening to Gang of Youths. "Go Farther in Lightness" was Quain's TOP ALBUM of 2017, and still hails it as one of the most important albums in the last decade. Hey people! It’s summer! Time to hit some shows. And to help you get your calendar arranged, this week we're cranking up the volume on some of the best bands we met in studio sessions this year who happen to have shows in the area, plus a super fancy, exclusive concert premiere. You can find videos of all these performances at www.opb.org/stateofwonder.Iconic Supergroup case/lang/veirs Teams UpNeko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs finished three years of work on a lush, soulful new record and played their entire album, “case/lang/veirs,” in an exclusive opbmusic session. If you do nothing else today, go enjoy the video. You can also catch the trio live at the Oregon Zoo in Portland on July 2 and at the Les Schwab Ampitheater in Bend on July 5.M. Ward Sings to His Baby (and opbmusic)
The latest release from M. Ward, "More Rain," might sound like a Portland soundtrack, but it belies its name with sunny sounds of doo-wop and golden era AM radio sensibilities. The artist came by the OPB studios to play a few songs with a power backing band (REM’s Scott McCoy, Mike Coykendall, and Alialujah Choir’s Adam Selzer and Alia Farah), who he insists he did not find on Craigslist. Watch the videos, and see Ward at Revolution Hall on July 16 and 17.Joseph Heats Up On Late NightIt’s shaping up to be a great summer for the band Joseph, as the sister trio (Allison, Meegan, and Natalie Closner) blew it up this week on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," performing their new single "White Flag." We had the pleasure of talking with the sisters in a cozy acoustic session last year. The trio grew up on a small farm in Estacada. Currently, they are on tour for their new album, “I’m Alone, No You’re Not.” They'll be at Pickathon in Happy Valley, Oregon, August 5-7 and will circle back to Eugene in September. The Soul-Hop of Dirty RevivalDirty Revival brought their seven piece band down to the OPB studios to play some funky, energetic tracks off their 2015 self-titled album. The group sat down with host April Baer to talk touring, song reworks, and the social consciousness that permeates their music. You can watch videos of their performance here, and catch them live at the Doug Fir on June 25, Bend's Deschutes Brewery on June 27, and Portland's Columbia Park Annex for a Summer Free For All show on July 12.Blind Pilot Sails Back into Harbor with a New AlbumBlind Pilot’s 2008 debut album, “3 Rounds and a Sound,” made national headlines after they took the album on tour, by bike, riding down the west coast with their instruments in tow. We caught up with the band’s founders Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski last summer in Astoria for a special performance with classical cello star Sergey Antonov. Their new album, “And Then Like Lions,” is set to be released on Aug. 12. Catch the band live at the Liberty Theatre in Astoria on August 19 or see them in Portland and Eugene in October.1939 Ensemble Soar With Instrumental Power
Jose Medeles and David Coniglio built the sonic equivalent of a sweet ‘67 Camaro when they got together to play drums and vibraphones. The two artists came in for an opbmusic session to talk about where they’re headed. See them live at the PDX Pop Now Festival, alongside a roster of stellar local acts, July 22-24.

My self proclaimed hiatus seems to have been declared in haste. Admittedly this has much to do with the matter of my being recently relieved of my scholastic concerns and let loose in those green pastures of leisure time. And like all things leisurely, such as strolls, it is a constitutional, a blam on the jaded nerves and jangled devices of self defense. Not to put too fine a point on it this is a bit of a mix up more leaning to the classics as would befit a peace of mind. Enough blather - oh but one thing, before I continue - be sure to take a tab and catch up on your folk's eye candy by checking out the adventures of Quasi. Still un-inspired? Catch the 1967 video for Pierre Henry's Psyché Rock. Astounding enough that it's machine evolution predates Kurzweil and more effective because of it.One last video, sure how about the entire 1929 movie from Communist Russia Man with Movie Camera. Your grandfather's jaw presumably dropped during the raw 'documenting the world as it is' scene.Alright enough of that. Lets listen to some music.Hombres - Let it Out (let it all hang out) Mark Prindle sums it up better than I ever could.buyCreaky Boards - BrooklynThis is, for me, right now, a definitive track. It is also very good and catchy too. They haven't made a big move in the world yet but they seem to have the chops for the pop indie boards and I for one highly anticipate watching their development. buyVampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa KwassaThe Paul Simon afro beat inflected swing in this piece is adds the force necessary to get the song shaking a steady rhythm. I can only wish that I had played it sooner.Les Problemes - Je ne Vois RienThis French 60's psych song roughly translates as "I don't See Anything" - included here for the furious francophilia each of us have at heart. I don't have much information of these guys but apparently they got involved with the french peace lovers in the '60s and acquired the ire of the conservative types on the matter of the war. buyOlympic Runners - Just Funkin` Around My soul funk submission for the month (by contractual obligation) is this stand out freak out jazzed up track by the overlooked and underheard UK band.buyThe Stranglers - Golden BrownIt's the most up tempo song about heroin - Merry Christmas! buyNew Pornographers - Myriad HarbourAnother modern miracle of catchy tunes about NYC. What luck! I like to think that in a perfect world these guys would crush the pearly stylings of the Doug Firin one awesome sonic histrionic session to kick off their careers and me shaking a busted fist and bloody maw at the front of the audience.
