Why Did I Get Cancer?
116. Take a Chill Pill. Is staying peaceful the key to health?…with Dr. Natalie Greenberg (Re-Release)

Why Did I Get Cancer?

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2025 45:36

Oh Lord, help me to relax and push the pause button. Today's guest, Dr. Natalie Greenberg from The Center for New Medicine, explained how important it is for my health to hit the pause button. She also mentioned that when life gets overwhelming, It's crucial to pause and take a deep breath before reacting to any situation. Her words spoke to me. I tend to be an "over-responder." I might get irritated with someone before I have all the information about a situation. I might wake up upset because of a restless night, and my negative thoughts kick in, telling me how tough the day will be. How could my life be different if, instead of following my default of reacting, I took a minute, slowed down my breathing, pushed the pause button, gathered my thoughts, and then responded INSTEAD of reacting? Nervous System: This would help my body stay in a parasympathetic state (the rest and digest state), so my body wouldn't produce as many stress hormones. This means I'd have lower levels of inflammation and, honestly, better relationships! Immune System: Staying calm supports the immune system and allows your body to produce more "happy hormones," such as serotonin and melatonin, which means you fall asleep faster. The Joy Factor: thinking the best about people means I look for joy everywhere I go. When I see someone wearing a cute outfit or making me a fabulous matcha latte, I PRAISE THEM! The Bible says, to the best of my abilities, be at peace with people at all times. Pro tip: The scripture above says that, to the best of my abilities, sometimes it's impossible to be at peace with some people, and you know what? That's okay, too. The older I get, the more I realize my gift to people is letting them be who they are. ____ Water Filtration: Boroux  I've been looking for a water filter for two years. Okay, maybe I'm a little picky...but my research paid off. I've chosen the Boroux Filter system and am really happy with it. Are you curious about my criteria? Here's what I was looking for in a filter: Removal of heavy metals. The Boroux removes 99.36% of heavy metals. Pharmaceuticals are removed. Because people don't dispose of drugs properly, the drugs get into our water system. The Boroux removes 99.5% of pharmaceutical contaminants. Glyphosate removal (glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup and is a known carcinogen). A year ago, I was tested for glyphosate and was in the 95th percentile. I was shocked! Since I was already eating mainly organic, my doctor suggested getting a water filter. I had a challenging time finding one that would filter this chemical, and this was one of my main drivers for purchasing this filter. Boroux has a special offer for my community. Click the link below to research and purchase. https://boroux.sjv.io/7aM1a3 ____ Just Add Buoy Companies contact me every week, asking me to try their products. Honestly, I get food and supplement samples almost weekly! Last week, a San Diego company called Just Add Buoy emailed me to ask if I wanted to try their electrolyte formula. I said yes because I've been looking for an electrolyte formula (without tons of sugar, both fake and real and no dyes) for years. They sent me some samples, and I must tell you how much I love them. I'm trying the Hydration Drops, and they have 87 trace minerals, Ionic ocean electrolytes, and antioxidants. And, also important to me, NO SUGAR (FAKE OR REAL), NO ADDITIVES OR DYES. And it's non-GMO. I like that it's flavorless, and I can add it to a smoothie or even my morning coffee without noticing any flavor change. Use the link below to get 20% off of your order. https://www.justaddbuoy.com/DEBORAH10729 ____ About  Dr. Natalie Greenberg Dr. Natalie Greenberg, a licensed naturopathic doctor, is dedicated to empowering individuals to achieve optimal health. In this episode hosts Joe Ayoub and Raza Shaikh welcome Susan Leahy, the founder of Robert's Rules Made Simple. Susan has trained and advised thousands of board members, board chairs and others on how to master Robert's Rules of Order, to help lead and participate in productive meetings.    Key Takeaways 1. History of Robert's Rules of Order  Robert's Rules of Order is a decision making process developed in the 1800s by General Henry M. Robert, who was frustrated by disorganized meetings. Roberts created a guide, first published in 1876, which summarized and simplify parliamentary procedure to make understanding how to run an effective meeting accessible to everyone.  It has, over the years, evolved into a detailed 700-page reference guide.  2. Susan's journey to Robert's Rules  Leahy was first introduced to Robert's Rules when she and her mother enrolled into a local junior college course to learn about how to run   an effective meeting. At that time, Leahy's mother served on an all-male city council board and found that during the meetings, discussions and decisions weren't clear. Understanding Robert's Rules gave her mother confidence in the meetings  and she was able to find her voice and she was able to be of service “ and she was able to find her voice and she was able to be of service.” Susan began using Robert's Rules in high school and at college in connection with student government and became known for running effective meetings  3. The value of effective board meetings   Robert's Rules of Order increases the likelihood that meetings will be productive. At its core, the Rules are about promoting clarity and action. By following the Seven Fundamental Motions of Robert's Rules meetings become more productive Robert's Rules is only used to handle the business of meetings, not the entire meeting. Once board members learn the basics,  then the board's productivity increases exponentially. Robert's Rules are intended to provide everyone in the boardroom with a “common language” to help foster productive discussion and decision-making regarding the business of an organization. 4. The role of a parliamentarian in board meetings A parliamentarian is a resource for the chair, ensuring meetings stay on track. The chair ultimately makes the final decision but can consult with the parliamentarian whenever needed. Quotes  ”When you are on a board, you're either handling information items or business items, and when it comes to the business of a board, everyone on that board needs to understand the decision making process they're using in order to be productive and drive action.”  ”You do not need to be a parliamentarian to use Robert's Rules of Order. It is a reference guide there to support you in making business decisions.  That's important because if people do not have a common understanding about how you're making business decisions, it's can create tension, mistrust, frustration - and it's going to waste a lot of time”  ”What we do is put an emphasis on providing training that's going to make us more high functioning. How are we going to not just get it “right” how are we going to be healthy?  And that's why I focus on healthy board dynamics and using Robert's Rules of Order as a tool to leverage a healthier dynamic on your board.”   Links Robert's Rules Made Simple   Guest Bio Susan Leahy, MA CSP, is a dynamic and highly engaging speaker, trainer, and facilitator specializing in board development, leadership, and effective meetings. As the founder of Robert's Rules Made Simple, established in 2004, Susan has empowered thousands of board members, board chairs, and support staff to master Robert's Rules of Order, transforming meetings into productive, efficient, and empowering experiences. A sought-after expert in communication, leadership, and group decision-making, Susan has worked with organizations of all sizes—from nonprofits to Fortune 500 companies and government entities. She is the creator of the acclaimed "Chair a Meeting with Confidence" program, designed to help board chairs lead with clarity, authority, and ease. With a Master's degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences from Bastyr University, Susan combines deep expertise with a refreshingly engaging approach. Her unique background—being raised by a professional clown and a career Marine—shapes her signature style: energetic, impactful, and highly memorable. She has a rare talent for making even the most complex or dry topics both accessible and engaging, leaving her audiences empowered and inspired.

The pervasive presence of microplastics and environmental toxins in our daily lives poses a growing threat to human health, with impacts ranging from hormonal disruption and metabolic dysfunction to immune system compromise and chronic inflammation. These contaminants, found in food packaging, water supplies, personal care products, and even the air we breathe, accumulate in the body and contribute to the rise in chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune conditions. Understanding their far-reaching effects is essential, but the good news is that the body has powerful detoxification mechanisms that, when properly supported through dietary choices, lifestyle adjustments, and targeted supplementation, can help mitigate their damage.  In this episode, I discuss, along with toxin-expert Dr. Joseph Pizzorno, why we need to take action to reduce toxin exposures, reverse existing damage, and build a foundation for long-term well-being. Dr. Joseph Pizzorno is a transformational leader in medicine. Through half a century of work, he has helped establish and advance the academic, scientific, and clinical protocols for natural, functional, integrative, and environmental medicine. As founding president of Bastyr University in 1978, he coined the term “science-based natural medicine” and led Bastyr to become the first-ever accredited institution in the field. He has set worldwide standards of practice by authoring or co-authoring six textbooks for doctors, including the Textbook of Natural Medicine (over 100,000 copies in 4 languages across 5 editions) and Clinical Environmental Medicine. He is Editor-in-Chief of PubMed-indexed IMCJ—the most widely read, peer-reviewed journal in the field (25,000 copies each issue). He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Functional Medicine, where he served three terms as Chair. Menopausal Hormone Therapy   Sex and the older woman used to be considered an oxymoron, rarely mentioned in the same breath. Finally, menopause is having big media moments, including a just-published book, Dare I Say It – Everything I Wish I'd Known About Menopause, by Naomi Watts.   Nearly thirty years ago, I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. I was living in Honolulu and hosted a radio show “Fifty-Plus and Fabulous – A Show About Successful Aging.” One of my guests was a medical doctor specializing in longevity. As I was then just beginning menopause, he suggested bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), which included regular doses of estradiol (Bi-Est), progesterone, and testosterone. As a result, I've enjoyed “postmenopausal zest” for all these years! Going from fertile to menopausal, I was closed for business—but open for pleasure!   My guest, Dr. Rebecka Hoppins, is a board-certified naturopathic physician and a 2005 graduate of Bastyr University near Seattle. She has 20 years of clinical experience with a particular focus on hormone balancing. She is deeply passionate about educating her patients regarding the effects of hormone dynamics in our day-to-day activities and the impact they have on every aspect of our lives: relationships, work, mental health, home life, and bigger health issues. You can reach her at the Sage Integrative Medical Clinic – www.sagemedclinic.com .   Dr. Becky shared her personal perimenopausal management. She reports, “I come from a history of women with significant PMS and menopausal symptoms. Since I've been practicing hormone balancing in clinic for 20 years, I don't get symptoms as long as I follow my own rules!”   She and I had an informed conversation debunking these three common myths about menopause:   MYTH. Estrogen replacement therapy causes breast cancer. TRUTH. Estrogen replacement therapy does not increase your risk of breast cancer over your preexisting baseline risk. The WHI study (2002), the source of this myth, has been reevaluated.   MYTH.   The deterioration of vaginal tissues that can happen with menopause will resolve over time. TRUTH. The genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) includes dryness, itching, painful sex, urinary incontinence, and frequent UTIs, and will worsen over time if not treated. Systemic hormone therapy—especially topical local estrogen which can be used vaginally—typically prevents GSM.   MYTH. I can't take hormone therapy because of the dangers of blood clots. TRUTH. The risk is less than the risk that exists from taking oral birth control. Hormone therapy very likely safe when administered via transdermal patch.     And, of course, many menopausal women find that their sex drive diminishes or disappears. What can you do to enjoy sex more? Dr. Becky suggests topical estrogen, adrenal balancing, managing stress—and picking the right partner. Both of us agree that nothing is going to be helpful if you don't like your partner! We also discussed how estrogen helps with orgasm, and how a vibrator can become an important aid to enhancing a woman's capacity to achieve orgasm. The more a woman practices on her own and teaches her partner what she likes, the easier it is for her to reach climax.   Dr. Becky is a delight and so well informed.  Please listen!  You will learn a lot!

Today I'm excited to introduce you to my friend and colleague Dr. John Neustadt, a naturopathic doctor and graduate of Bastyr University. He's an expert in bone health and prevention of osteoporosis, as well as a researcher, speaker, and author of the book "Fracture Proof Your Bones: A Comprehensive Guide to Osteoporosis." While we often think of osteoporosis as primarily affecting women during perimenopause and post-menopause, it's important to note that about 80% of osteoporosis cases are in women and 20% in men. Like many chronic diseases, the condition progresses for many years before receiving a diagnosis. Research shows that approximately 70% of women 50 years and older have some bone loss, and this might be an underestimate considering the many commonly prescribed medications, such as antidepressants and acid-blocking medications, that can damage bone health even earlier in life. If you have osteoporosis and fracture a hip, there's up to a 65% chance of death within a year. However, it's important to understand that while serious, this isn't an emergency. There's time to educate yourself and create a holistic bone health plan. I'm so glad to be able to connect with John and be able to bring a natural and holistic solution to my patients and listeners who are wanting to prevent osteoporosis and fractures. On this podcast I talk about all things aging and healthspan, from supplements and nutrition to the latest discoveries in longevity research. My goal is to lift the veil on the geroscience and longevity world and help you apply what we know to your own personal health trajectory. I care about quality science and will always be honest about what I don't know. I hope you'll find these episodes helpful!

Take a Chill Pill. With over three decades of clinical experience, Dr. Anderson has played a significant role in advancing the field, including heading the interventional arm of a US NIH-funded research trial on IV and integrative therapies for cancer patients. He has held various esteemed positions, such as professor of pharmacology and clinical medicine at Bastyr University and chief of IV services at Bastyr Oncology Research Center. Dr. Anderson is also a prolific author, contributing to books that have become essential resources for both practitioners and patients alike. In this discussion on the future of integrative oncology, Dr. Anderson highlights the concept of therapeutic synergy, which has become increasingly important in treating cancer patients. He reflects on the early days of integrative oncology when the focus was on finding a single treatment that could universally combat cancer. However, through years of clinical experience and research, it has become evident that no one-size-fits-all treatment exists. Instead, integrative therapies must be tailored to each patient's unique immune system and overall health. This personalized approach, which combines various therapies to enhance their effectiveness, is where Dr. Anderson sees the field moving forward, leading to better outcomes for patients.Dr. Anderson emphasizes the importance of understanding the patient's individual condition, particularly their immune system's status, before deciding on a treatment plan. He explains that while some patients with robust immune systems may respond well to a wide range of therapies, others, especially those who have undergone extensive conventional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, may need more gentle, restorative approaches initially. The goal is to strike a balance between strengthening the patient and aggressively targeting the disease, a process that requires careful assessment and a deep understanding of both the science and the art of medicine. Dr. Anderson's insights underscore the importance of personalized, synergistic approaches in integrative oncology, offering hope for more effective cancer treatments in the future.Dr. Paul Anderson is a recognized leader in integrative and naturopathic medicine, specializing in complex infectious, chronic, and oncologic illnesses. He has over three decades of clinical experience and has held significant roles, including leading a US NIH-funded human research trial on integrative therapies in cancer patients.Dr. Anderson has co-authored several influential books on cancer therapies, which are recommended resources for patients and clinicians alike.----Learn more from Dr. Paul Anderson: https://www.consultdranderson.com/----Grab my book A Better Way to Treat Cancer: A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding, Preventing and Most Effectively Treating Our Biggest Health Threat - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CM1KKD9X?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860 ----Integrative Cancer Solutions was created to instill hope and empowerment. Noelle Cordeaux, CEO of Lumia, recently sat down with Lumia alumni Elizabeth J. O. to explore an emerging frontier in coaching: the integration of psychedelic experiences. Elizabeth J. O. co-founded Altered States Integration, a practice dedicated to guiding individuals through their psychedelic journeys, ethically and responsibly. Psychedelics have long been associated with profound personal transformations, and Elizabeth emphasizes that the true potential of these experiences lies not just in the moments of revelation but in the subsequent integration process.  Coaches can make a big impact on clients before, during, and after these experiences – but there are many elements and ethical questions to consider before diving into a psychedelic integration coaching practice. Elizabeth J. O. is a holistic Nutritionist and Change Coach with 12 years of clinical practice. Her journey to become a healer was fueled by the need to overcome childhood traumas. Elizabeth has used her training to quit many of the self-harming behaviors of Borderline Personality Disorder. During the last decade, she has studied human behavior, psychology, yoga, flow states, and mindfulness-based therapies. Elizabeth recently combined these tools with psychedelics in experiments to neurohack her emotional suffering from depression. She talks about this in her new book, “Breaking Emotional Addiction: Neurohacking Borderline Personality Disorder with Ibogaine.”  Elizabeth studied both herbal medicine and nutrition at Bastyr University, a college of natural medicine. She travels teaching workshops and has a virtual coaching practice. In her free time she does peer support in online forums and volunteers at festivals offering psychedelic harm reduction. Elizabeth is passionate about reducing the barriers to finding compassionate support for processing non-ordinary states of consciousness. You can connect with them here.
