SHLTMM CAN NOW BE HEARD ON YOUTUBE:YOUTUBE CHANNEL LINK: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoUWxgQECqrMqI1ylVH9DpwAs I mention in the introduction of my show, Gramps Jeffrey, I believe is the first grandfather I've interviewed on SHLTMM, so that's pretty great. I was so happy to hear how engaged he is with his grandchildren.Gramps' mother's name was Faye  and she really left quite an impression on him and his brother.  Faye was the youngest of 3 children, with two older brothers. Growing up during the Depression and  WWII, known as The Greatest Generation, was a very challenging time, "and my mother lived up to every expectation", continues Gramps.  While raising her two boys, she  insisted they turn off the tv and read-no if, ands or buts. "We loved our mother," says Gramps, referring to him and his brother. They grew up in a small town in Ohio, about 50 miles outside Columbus,  where they were free to play outside and knew when to come home in time for dinner. He had relatives nearby as well, including  lots of love and support from his grandmother and uncle.Gramps brags, "mom always had a positive attitude.  Her glass was always half full  and she was always looking at the 'bright side of life."  That philosophy  and her passion of reading certainly influenced Gramps and his interest in writing.  It's clearly stayed with him even today because he continues to write and read to  his 6 grandchildren."Mom would remind us regularly that we were very fortunate and had a good life, but that we can't forget other people. This world is hard and she knew it," remarks Gramps.  Faye had learned many life lessons from her paternal grandmother who lost her husband suddenly when he was only 49. She was left  to raise her  children  on her own, including Fay's dad. She also raised her nephew who had also lost his parents. But her grandmother was always smiling regardless of her hardships.Gramps Jeffrey is very concerned about the different parenting styles  today. Most concerns him most and feels is most important for every child is 'one on one attention' from the parent. Gramps feels so blessed to have had such a devoted mother, and hopes that parents still take the time to put the phone down, turn the computer off and just sit and read or spend that precious time with your children. Gramps' mom gave him such a sense of security. "We could always go home and feel secure, you felt love, you felt protected," remarks Gramps about his mom. One of his mom's favorite quotes was "when you love, you will teach others how to love."Gramps Jeffrey is truly committed to sharing this message. He's got every little child on his mind in hopes that they get all the loving that they truly deserve.Gramps Jeffrey is his pen name. His real name is Marc Joseph. Gramps Jeffrey was in isolation with his wife, children and 6 children during Covid and he had an opportunity to observe the kids up close. From that experience he wrote a book called, "I Don't Want to Turn 3." It tells the story of a tough lesson learned and the resolution shared with the whole family. In our discussion we talked about how parenting today has changed from how we were parented and how we parented our own children. Gramps shared some cute family examples in the telling of his stories. As grandparents, he advised that we watch out for the tendency to give unsolicited advise use manipulation to try to get what we want undermine the parent's authority What we can do as grandparents, particularly with our younger grandchildren, is find time to read with them. Sharing books builds a closeness between grandparents and the grandchildren. We can ask questions and help them learn to think. We communicate with them while we read to them, and model listening skills. And if you are a long-distance grandparent, he shared a cute idea for an activity you can do to create connection with your grandchildren. Episode Takeaways: 1. As grandparents we can help to teach children how to think 2. He suggested one question you could ask every day, "what did you do today that was nice to someone?" 3. When you love, you will teach others to love. Thanks so much for listening. Our culture talks a lot about the importance of creativity, healthy eating, and exercise. We also need to emphasize the importance of thinking...you don't really learn from just receiving instant information. If you're a grandparent, one simple thing you can do is read to the kids and have conversations about the content. Marc Joseph (aka Gramps Jeffrey) created a children's book, I Don't Want to Turn Three, during the pandemic for his grandchildren. This connection he made with his grandchildren was an inspiration to work on a series now. I love that people are sharing their knowledge in different ways. There are many different things that go into making an entrepreneur successful. While having a great product or service to sell is certainly important, it's not the only thing you need. Elzie discusses with Gramps Jeffrey how you also need to be able to choose the right people to help you bring your vision to life and manage your finances responsibly. Find out the key characteristics that will help you achieve success and be an effective entrepreneur! Highlights: 04:48 You always have to have an extra strategy. You always gotta be thinking about, okay, where am I going to be taking this business? 05:38 You have to have the right products, or the right concept or the right service. You know, that's very important.   07:59 The key is you have to surround yourself with people that have strengths that you do not and don't let your ego get in the way. 09:01 One thing that is always in the back of my mind and kept me up is, “Am I gonna make payroll at the end of the week?” 10:24 An entrepreneur has to take responsibility. We learn by failing, unfortunately, but that's how we learn. That's why as we get older, we do get wiser because we fail. Turning 3 years old is a significant milestone for kids, and for parents too. At this age, kids begin to form a sense of curiosity and develop ideas and opinions about the world around them, especially money. How children see adults handle money will play a significant role in shaping their ideas about money. By setting a good example, parents and grandparents can help instill healthy habits in their children at an early age. Our next guest, Gramps Jeffrey, is a grandfather of six, who has written an award-winning children's book, "I Don't Want to turn 3." It explores what goes through a toddler's mind - which parents often desperately want to understand.  He is also the author of the acclaimed business book "The Secrets of Retailing… How to Beat Walmart" and is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post.  In this episode, Bob and Gramps Jeffrey discuss the need for conscious and intentional parenting. The simple act of actively listening can instill beneficial habits that can set your child up for success in the future. The Book Leads – Episode 28: Gramps Jeffrey & I Don' Want To Turn 3 For this episode, multi-title author Gramps Jeffrey walks me through what it was that prompted him to write his book. Simply put, it came out of spending more time with his grandkids, watching the way they think, negotiate, and navigate their way through life. Gramps is a veteran of business, spending decades in retail and sales – leading to his writing the book “The Secrets of Retailing…How to Beat Wal-Mart” -- and catching the wave and harnessing the power of the internet in its infancy to both launch and consult for online businesses. Between his career in business and his love of being a grandfather, he can see the intertwined relationship between those early, formative years of childhood and how we can shape – or at least try to guide – how our society's kids think. I loved having this conversation because I'm growing more fascinated about what the early years of our lives, even this young, mean for who we are later. Some highlights we touch upon in this episode: The behavior of children and how it translates to later in life, work, and business. How we lose ourselves (sometimes our best attributes) after adolescence. The power of learning from our mistakes, even if it takes a generation. The MAIN QUESTION for you, which underlies my conversation with Gramps is, How do you both proactively impact the lives of the youth around you while also learning from them? Bio: Gramps Jeffrey is the pen name for Marc Joseph whose first book “The Secrets of Retailing…How to Beat Wal-Mart” was written to help entrepreneurs and small businesses compete against the big guys. Arianna Huffington read his book and asked him to contribute to the Huffington Post, and so he has written over 100 articles about small businesses, education, the homeless and several other nonprofit topics dear to all of us. Gramps and his lovely wife Cathy live in Scottsdale, Arizona where 2 of his grandchildren live. 2 more live in Austin, Texas and 2 in Orlando, Florida. Age 3, as this toddler sees it, is the age when he'll have to take responsibility for his actions, which he is not looking forward to. This story also involves conflict resolution with children, and the roles that parents and grandparents can have in nourishing wisdom in children. It is based on the true experiences Gramps Jeffrey has had with his 6 grandchildren.

Gramps Jeffrey has 4 kids and 6 grandchildren and believes baby boomers have a unique role to play in raising their grand kids. To deliver on this, he wrote a children's book, “I Don't Want to Turn 3”,  to explore the interaction that is happening between families in just about every household in the world.  I found this conversation really intriguing as I tried to better understand Gramp's value. On some levels it made perfect sense: wanting to leverage the knowledge from prior generations, the importance of grandparents instilling knowledge in kids, the value of reading to kids, etc.. However, I wanted to understand what was really underneath this. Why was it that baby boomers as grand parents, in particular, were so important in this role?  I think even Gramps struggled a bit at times to articulate why this value was so important to him, but it was rooted in trying to help improve the world. As we dug more into the conversation we started to uncover some interesting insights though that I think explained it. It seemed like there was some regret that Gramps had, where some in his generation (and prior generations) didn't value family enough. It wasn't that they didn't love their family, but the focus was so rigid on working and providing for your family, that it often resulted in missing out on the little moments that can be so important (e.g., soccer games, dance recitals, etc.). Gramps went even further to explain there was some guilt as well from his generation. He realized there were some mistakes made in how they approached the world and might have contributed to some of the divisiveness we have today and he felt an obligation to try and fix that.  As Gramps said it, once he retired, he started to think more about his legacy and reflected on what he had done to make the world a better place. His belief is that the current generation of kids (through age 10) have a unique opportunity to be the greatest generation ever, given all the technology and knowledge at their finger tips. So Gramps wants to do his part to teach them about the mistakes his generation made, so kids can be better prepared to avoid them and live up to their potential--and maybe finally fix the deep social problems we have in the world. It is an ambitious goal and as we discussed there are some risks (e.g., are baby boomers really best suited to teach the younger generation, can these lessons even be taught or do they have to be experienced, etc.). But overall I admire that Gramps saw a problem and is doing his part to try and address it, while also making the most of the time he has with this family.

After a career as an executive in the successful "Everything's A Dollar" retail chain, Gramps Jeffrey was inspired to take a turn at writing a children's book due to his experiences with his own 6 grandchildren. Written during the quiet solitude of the pandemic, "I Don't Want to Turn 3" is based in a true story. Names have been changed to protect the precocious, but it is the story of Justin and a very bad habit he had developed during his terrible two's. We all come to verious moral and ethical crossroads in our lives, and the story explores one of those rites of passage most all of us are forced to confront very early in life. We will not disclose the ending, but you and your own kids and grandkids are sure to appreciate it's lesson. Note: Yeah Uh Huh does not endorse Grand Theft Auto, and any confession to crimes that may or may not have been committed approximately 45 years ago are covered by the Statute of Limitations of our state and are not admissable in court :). I spoke to Gramps Jeffrey recently about his recent book: I don't want to turn 3. I read it – and remember when I was 3. SOOOO - Grandpa Jeffrey explains why he wrote "I Don't Want to Turn 3" as follows: Living this past year in isolation due to the pandemic, I was with my family. This gave me special time to watch and interact with the grandkids. Cool !!! All 6 kids have completely different personalities. The one thing they have in common is the sense of curiosity and how excited they get when they accomplish something new. Watching them grow year to year and how they interact with each other is the basis for this book. What goes through a toddler's mind that parents are so desperate to understand? When does a toddler understand the difference between “me” and “us”? This book explores how a family finds out together. As a baby boomer trying to understand how the world has evolved since I was 3 years old, is also part of this story. My parents did not have cell phones, Internet or cable TV. My parents' definition of discipline is quite different than parents of today. Has today's world made for a better place for children to grow up? I will let you answer that question as you weigh how you were treated growing up compared to how we treat our kids today. So, I wrote this book to read to these grandkids. Their reaction has been invaluable. As you watch them understand Jordan's discovery of right versus wrong, you can see the older kids have gone through the same dilemma. And the younger kids don't quite yet understand the concept of sharing. This whole experience, for me, has been priceless. There is a surprise ending that will pull at your heartstrings. Gramps Jeffrey also wrote “The Secrets of Retailing or How to Beat Wal-Mart !!!! Can't wait to read that one and that will be our next podcast ! His books can be found on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and his website: grampsjeffrey.com. His website is awesome - and he is an amazing guy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/michelemarotta/support
