Matthew 2:1-12
Matthew 4:1-11
Psalm 1 - If the Bible is all that we've learned that it is then it begs the question: What do we do with it? In this sermon we conclude our consideration of the broad category of "meditating on Scripture" and look at 2 more specific forms it can take: meditation and memorization. In all the ways we approach the Bible, we have to be ready to answer with a resounding “Here I am, speak!” We have to approach it with trembling humility—knowing that we aren't reading dead letters, but spirit-inspired and spirit-illuminated words of God. And we have to approach it with delight in full acknowledgement of the privileged, holy ground we're stepping onto when we take this book and eat it. All that we might see and savor Jesus Christ Himself and be transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. A sermon by Cameron Heger and Joel Christopher. [Part 6 of our series "The Very Words of God: Answering, trembling & delighting before the Holy Scriptures"] Questions for reflection: 1) Have you ever tried meditating on the Bible? How did you go about it? 2) Do you find an approach like "lectio divina" or, on the other hand, an approach like deep Bible study more appealing? Why? 3) What has your relationship been like with memorizing Scripture? 4) What is one verse you've never memorized that you think would be good to do? 5) What difference does the belief that the Bible is the very words of God make for how we approach it? 6) Talk about some of the ways we encounter Jesus in the Bible.
Psalm 1 - The first Psalm describes the kind of person who finds deep blessing and flourishing. At the heart of the description is a vital relationship to the Scriptures--a relationship of delight and meditation. To "meditate" in the Psalm 1 sense is to continually and repeatedly engage with the parts of the Bible in light of the whole and whole of the Bible in light of the parts in various ways until we are immersed in and formed by the gospel, story, wisdom, and commands of God that we find across its pages. In this sermon we introduce the broad category of "meditating on Scripture" and look specifically at 3 forms it can take: listening, wide reading, and deep study. A sermon by Cameron Heger and Reed Hooke. [Part 5 of our series "The Very Words of God: Answering, trembling & delighting before the Holy Scriptures"] Questions for reflection: 1) What do you think it means to "delight" in the Bible? Why is this important? 2) What is the relationship between being formed by the Bible and "blessedness" or "prosperity"? 3) How does this passage reinforce the idea that interaction with the Bible is a life-long endeavor? 4) In what ways did Jesus embody the life of the true Psalm-1-person? 5) How do listening, reading, and studying enable you to engage the Bible in different ways? 6) Share some ways of engaging with Scripture that you've personally found helpful over the years.

Ezekiel 3:1-3
The Bible isn't fast food. It's slow bread. In a world of scrolling and skimming, we've forgotten how to pause with a single verse, sit in silence, and let it speak to us. This week, we'll rediscover the ancient practice of meditating on Scripture, not as an escape from life but as a way of soaking in truth that transforms us. You don't need a seminary degree to hear from God. You just need time, attention, and a willingness to listen.

Pastor Dru Rodriguez highlights the powerful invitation to deeply internalize God's Word by urging believers to “eat” the Bible—allowing its truth to saturate and transform every part of their lives rather than merely reading it passively.

In 1535, William Tyndale was burned at the stake at the order of the King of England for the grievous crime of translating the Bible into English, and then printing it and disseminating it. King Henry 8th was so furious, he burned 6,000 copies of the Bible. But today, we don't burn the Bible. We just ignore it. In 2 Timothy 4, the Apostle Paul says what King Henry knew - that the Bible is dangerous because the Bible is no mere book. It's the Word of God and it has the power to utterly transform us, in the process forging us into the likeness of Jesus in a world that desperately need it. The Bible really can do that. That is, if we let it. SPEAKERS: David Tieche (Saratoga), video (South Hills) Bible Passage(s): 2 Timothy 5

Welcome to Episode #134 of Way of the Bible podcast. This is our sixth of eight episodes in our seventeenth mini-series, The Man Jesus Christ. On this episode we're going to look at what the scriptures reveal about Jesus calling disciples and choosing some to follow him. Jesus said in Matthew 22:14 – For many are called, but few are chosen.Last episode we looked at Jesus traveling with several of his disciples and demonstrating to them and to large crowds his Miracle Extravaganza. This week we're going to look at the earliest disciples called by Jesus and how they started following him.Over the past few episodes I've mentioned a method I've been using to develop intimacy with God our Father through Jesus Christ called Lectio Divina. This method was developed in the third century and used for almost two millennia to encounter the living word of God (scripture) and in so doing be in fellowship and union with God our Father through Jesus Christ our Lord. The best description of Lectio Divina I've encountered is in the late Eugene Peterson's 2009 publication, “Eat This Book.” I highly encourage the reading of this book front to back. Lectio Divina provides the guardrails that allow you to enter into the living word of God and find Jesus alive, well, and talkative. The guardrails include the assimilation, integration, and synthesis of text through reading, meditation, prayer, and contemplation. There is little rigidity regarding the order these four guardrails (reading, prayer, meditation, contemplation). They are engaged as one is led by the Spirit through the text. Go with the flow of the Spirit is the best counsel I could give. As I go through the passages on this episode there will be little to no running commentary as I do not want to unduly influence your time with Jesus. That's right, I pray you to take the opportunity of spending time and have back and forth conversations with Jesus. This was not something I thought was possible until about four months ago. Since discovering the Lectio Divina method with the aid of an Ignatian Spiritual Exercise book I can testify that my prayer life and intimacy with Jesus have been dramatically improved. What I'm encouraging and praying you do is not to know more information about Jesus (which is not bad), but in the here and now to know the living Jesus more intimately, to love the living Jesus more intensely, and to following the living Jesus more closely. I've found these three pursuits of grace recommended by St. Ignatius to be very fruitful.
For Christians, the Bible isn't nice to have, it's vital. Central. Christians believe that the Bible is not just a book, but the divinely inspired Word of God, spoken for us, to lead us in the way of truth and love, down the path toward God's glory and our good. But it isn't about intellectual ascent; it's about transformation. And we find, in the Bible, that the Word of God is referred to as a number of things: it's bread (life-giving, necessary to our selves for life), a lamp (guides our path in a world that's dark, a sword (protects us in a world where we're under assault from lies that assail us) and a scalpel (it does surgery on us to heal us).

We can trust the word of God, because Jesus did. And we don't just read the Bible—we “Eat This Book.”

"My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you…" - Galatians 4:19. Apologetics is the discipline of defending the Christian faith as objectively true, rational, and applicable to life (1 Peter 3:15; Jude 3). This ministry requires a life attuned to the Spirit of God. Apologetics is a spiritual discipline of study that requires the fruit of the Holy Spirit for its integrity and effectiveness. The apologist thus needs humility and studiousness in his or her efforts to explain, commend, and defend the Christian worldview. Reading Jacques Barzun, The House of the Intellect.
