✅ The 5-movement Examen prayer that's transforming bedtimes (free PDF included!) ✅ Why this dad says NO social media until 18 (and the research backing him up) ✅ Simple breath prayers that turn everyday moments into encounters with God ✅ The daily catechism question that reminds his kids of their true identity FULL SHOW NOTES: In a world where screens compete for our attention every waking moment, how do we raise kids who know they belong to God instead of their devices? Jay Kim, a pastor living in Silicon Valley, shares his family's journey of moving at the "pace of peace" while navigating digital distractions. From practicing the ancient prayer of Examen with his 10 and 7-year-old to implementing radical boundaries around smartphones, Jay offers practical wisdom for dads who want to show up—really show up—for their children in an analog way. TAKEAWAYS Moving at the "pace of peace" means prioritizing relationships over plans and never compromising people for productivity The Examen prayer creates a powerful bedtime rhythm: presence, gratitude, reflection, confession, and hope for tomorrow Breath prayers can transform everyday moments—try "God, you control outcomes" (inhale) and "help me to be faithful" (exhale) Digital addiction requires intentional intervention: practice one hour tech-free daily, one day weekly, one week yearly Your kids need to see you detached from devices—dock phones away from family spaces to model analog presence Catechism in daily rhythms reinforces identity: "What is our only hope in life and death? We are not our own, we belong to God" Social media should have age restrictions like alcohol and tobacco—consider no social media until 18 The fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control) is the antidote to digital-age discontentment, fragility, and foolishness GUEST Jay Kim is a pastor in Northern California's Silicon Valley, author of multiple books including Analog Christian and Analog Church, and host of the Digital Examen podcast. He and his wife Jenny have two children and are committed to practicing intentional, incarnational family rhythms in one of the world's most digitally connected regions. Jay's work focuses on helping followers of Jesus navigate technology with wisdom while cultivating deeper spiritual practices. Seth and guest Jay discuss his book Analog Church and how digital technology can lead us away from what the Bible teaches us about what the church actually is. Check out Jay's books here
The promise of technological advancement seemed to be that work and life would be simplified. The promise of social media was limitless possibilities of connection and deep friendship. In reality, the technologies of our day seem determined to keep us scrolling and swiping at all costs, plugged into a feedback loop of impatience, comparison, outrage, contempt, and algorithm-built echo chambers. Blind to the dangers, we enjoy its temporary pleasures, unaware of the damage to our minds, bodies, and souls. In this episode, Matt talks with Jay Kim about the ways the digital age and its values affect the Christian life and church life. And as you can guess from the title, Jay advocates for analog faith in the midst of our digital world. ABOUT Jay Kim lives with his family in Silicon Valley, California and is Lead Pastor of WestGate Church. He's the host of IVP's Digital Examen Podcast and Barna's Making Space Podcast. He's the author of Analog Church; Analog Christian, and his most recent book, Listen, Listen, Speak — all of which we explore in this episode.

We talk about hearing God speak through diverse communities, listening and speaking across differences, and cultivating empathy through curiosity in conversations. Jay offers practical tips for incorporating rhythms that promote detachment from technology and create space to listen to God and others deeply. So join us as we learn to listen well in a noisy world. Jay Y. Kim is lead pastor of WestGate Church, a multisite church in Silicon Valley. He is the author of Analog Church: Why We Need Real People, Places, and Things in the Digital Age, winner of The Gospel Coalition's First-Time Author Award, and the follow-up Analog Christian: Cultivating Contentment, Resilience, and Wisdom in the Digital Age. In Philippians 3, Paul uses a phrase that at first blush seems quite inflammatory. He says that many people “live as enemies of the Cross of Christ” - a phrase which seems to create an “us” vs. “them” mentality. But this is reductionistic. The truth is, all of us have the choice to live like that. We do this when we lean on worldly wisdom over Godly wisdom, religious tradition over the way of Jesus, display hostility instead of kindness/generosity, work against peace, fail to live humbly, obediently, in surrender. So this can be something “religious” people or “non-religious” people do. But, as Paul points out, God's primary motivation is to save us from destruction— yes, the eternal destruction apart from God, but also the daily destruction we ourselves bear in our lives. This journey begins for all of us by reckoning with the fact that all is not well—in our world and in our lives, and admitting that WE. NEED. HELP. SPEAKERS: Jay Kim (Saratoga), Jay Kim (video) (South Hills) Bible Passage(s): Philippians 3:15-21
It's a pretty common rhetorical tactic these days - you can win an argument if you say that the other person is either 1. Just like Hitler or 2. Just like the anti-Christ. But in Philippians 3, Paul actually says that it's possible to live as an enemy of the Cross of Christ. This is a serious charge. But what does it mean? Does it mean you don't believe the right things? Or say the right things? Or is it deeper (and less simple) than that? Jay Kim stops by to chat about this vexing phrase - and in end we find out that the decision to live as an enemy of the Cross isn't just something that's a choice for some people, but ALL of us.

Joy isn't just the main character in Pixar's 2015 animated classic INSIDE OUT. It's also what we long for, and often, something we feel is deeply missing in our day-to-day life. Can our lives really be infused with joy no matter what our circumstances? How can we get joy? Does it require conditions to be perfect? And why is it so elusive? Jay Kim stops by to talk about Paul's letter to the Philippians where he uses the word “joy” or “rejoice” 17 times in this short letter. It's a main theme of the letter, and Paul's advice on how to “get” joy is shocking and counterintuitive. We also chat about some specific challenges of modern life that fight against joy - and how the 1999 film “Fight Club” diagnosed the modern sense of joyless malaise and hopelessness (and even sorta predicted 9/11). Go be small.HERE'S HOW:Today, be small. Go to some place where you see the immensity of creation. Take a deep breath, and remember the pressure is off. You can be small and allow the bigness of God to come over you right now. Become New is here to help you grow spiritually one day at a time.
In our modern world that elevates individualism, a truth that often goes entirely missing is just how much our lives can impact other people. We affect one another far more than we'd like to admit. And the modern mantra of “privatism” which says “mind your own business and don't interfere with other people and the way they choose to live their lives” sounds good, but it doesn't work in real life. And often it's cowardice, or worse, relational abdication. But how do we proceed to become people, like Jesus, who are full of both “grace” and “truth”? Jay Kim stops by to talk about that, and give some helpful advice for when situations arise when it's difficult to do both. Speakers: David Tieche + Jay Kim

There's no topic more confusing or contested in our culture than the topic of sexuality. This week, Jay Kim joins David Tieche to dive in. Sexuality is obviously a part of what it means to be human, but how big a part of our identity should it be? What are some ways that Christians talk about sex and sexuality that are reductionist, or incomplete or even harmful? Is a church merely having a non-affirming stance fundamentally unloving to folks who are gay? And what can we learn from the life of Jesus Himself about what it means to be sexual beings? Pastor Jay Kim shares important insights from Paul's letter to the Colossians and how this letter stresses the tremendous importance of understanding who Jesus Christ truly is. He is the author of a 40-day study on the book of Colossians that shares the message of unity among the followers of Christ; a message of thanksgiving and spiritual fullness in a broken world; a message that shows us how to live as the people who are made alive in the one true Christ. hopealongthejourney.org https://www.facebook.com/HopeAlongTheJourney --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-cravens7/support
Since Covid, most churches have whole-heartedly embraced digital. But what are the effects of the digital age on discipleship, community, and understanding the Bible? In this episode, Jay Kim talks about the intersection of digital culture and the church, emphasizing the importance of maintaining analog, embodied practices within the church to foster transformation, despite the informative nature of digital mediums. Kim describes the sermon as a relational exchange rather than mere content delivery, highlighting the role of the Holy Spirit in the act of preaching. The discussion also touches on the secular ideology of the "imminent frame" and the need to reclaim a sense of enchantment and curiosity in faith. Jay Kim also shares some practical analog ideas for engaging with scripture, such as reading it aloud, to counteract the individualistic approaches. Jay Y. Kim serves as the lead pastor at WestGate Church in the Silicon Valley and on the leadership team of the ReGeneration Project. He has experienced the digital church in all its splendor and writes about it in his two books, Analog Church and Analog Christian. Kim's writing has been featured in Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, Missio Alliance, and Relevant Magazine. He lives in Silicon Valley with his wife and two children. Elton Trueblood, a 20th-century author and theologian, once wrote, “A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit.” His point is that we find deep meaning in our lives by giving our lives away. And part of the goal of the Here to Stay Campaign is to invite all who call WestGate Church home to give away our lives and church for the benefit of future generations. SPEAKERS: Jay Kim (Saratoga), Jay Kim (video South Hills) Bible Passage(s): Psalm 145:4-6, SPEAKERS: Jay Kim + Steve Clifford(Saratoga), Jay Kim (video South Hills)
Every church has to answer the question “Why are we here?” For years, the short answer on that was that WestGate Church exists to be and to make disciples, learning and living the way of Jesus. Summarized in a word, the way of Jesus is LOVE—we exist to love God, one another, and our neighbors. But for the past few years, our leadership team and elders have been praying and asking God the question, “What does it mean to live this vision out faithfully, right here and right now?” And as we enter 2024, the particulars are becoming more clear. This message is the launch of the Here to Stay Campaign. Jay Kim and Steve Clifford explain the heart behind this campaign, and why it is WestGate's prayerful commitment to be a church that's truly here to stay…with God and for the good of all.” SPEAKERS: Jay Kim + Steve Clifford(Saratoga), Jay Kim (video South Hills)
At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, this past weekend was a big one for WestGate Church. We launched a massive campaign, called Here to Stay (the first in more than a decade) to raise $35 million. But even though this is the first weekend many people might have heard about it, it's been in the works for years. Literally years. Jay Kim stops by to offer some behind-the-scenes info about how the vision for this campaign came from, why it's not really about money at all, and why one of the driving forces behind the campaign are the values of “hospitality” and “kindness.” Speakers: David Tieche + Jay Kim

The Gospel was being mixed with other ideas and that's what Paul was addressing.Christian nationalism is an example of modern-day syncretism.Jay Kim describes the connection between what Paul says in Colossians and Plato's allegory of The Cave.Too often we think our programs are the main thing. Dave gets in his DeLorean and goes back in time to his sophomore year of high school when his best friend played him a song that contained a radical idea to him at 15 years old and that still seems incredible: that humans can talk conversationally (and safely) to God Himself. Jay Kim stops by to talk about this idea, and we go through John Calvin's famous “four rules for prayer” that practically help us orient our hearts as we pray. Also, we debrief Halloween, and discuss our family's costumes. Speakers: David Tieche + Jay Kim
There's a saying that “people who talk to God are religious, but people who hear from God are certifiably insane.” And yet, the idea that God is trying to communicate with human beings is actually a central assumption of the Christian story and the Christian Scriptures. Jay Kim and Steve Clifford stop by to share their wisdom and thoughts about what it means for us to be a people who earnestly desire to WANT to hear from God. We talk about the difference between God's voice and our own internal voice. And how we can cultivate wanting to “listen and obey” God in both desire and practice. Speakers: David Tieche + Jay Kim + Steve Clifford
Chris sits down with Pastor Jay Kim to discuss his new devotional book, "Colossians: One Jesus, One People," a 40-day study through the epistle. They have a lively conversation about the Book of Colossians, what it means to know the truth, and why unity is so crucial. They also talk about the importance of studying the context of the letter and understanding to whom it was written and why it was written, is so essential to understanding the deeper message of the Epistle of Colossians. This week, David Tieche debriefs Beautiful Day with Jay Kim. And they talk about the ancient spiritual practice of The Examen (which Dave is disappointed to learn has nothing to do with “The X-men.”) We then discuss a book that some scholars think might be the most widely read Christian book in the past 300 years that's not the Bible - a book by a French lay monk who spent all his life in obscurity. This book, titled The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence is an exact antidote for modern people, who live noisy, busy lives where God gets crowded out. And in this, the invitation is to live more attentive, less distracted lives. Speakers: David Tieche + Jay Kim

THE AFTERWORD | Matthew (Season 8) - Week 5 - What is Greatness Description: In every culture, the people who get celebrated and honored the most shape that society's view of what it means to be “great.” For example, the Bay Area's culture of ladder-climbing and going-public-striking-it-rich inevitably sinks into our souls, and malforms our ideas about greatness. Jay Kim stops by to talk about why Jesus' redefinition of greatness in Matthew 20 is not only radical but helpful and hopeful. We may or may not also talk for a bit too long about how the Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce situation plays into all of this. Speakers: David Tieche + Jay Kim
In his newest book, "Analog Christian: Cultivating Contentment, Resilience, and Wisdom in the Digital Age," author and pastor Jay Kim, writes, "One of the most effective ways of lulling us in is to situate us in a never-ending loop of comparison, which eventually breeds contempt, before finally devolving into unprecedented levels of self-centric despair. This often leads to a nagging and incessant impatience, as we desperately seek morsels of satisfaction that always leave us wanting." The main point here being, "always leaving us wanting." In Part 2, Jay and Janell continue their conversation about finding contentment, resilience, and wisdom in the Digital Age by choosing LOVE and by returning to the basic, yet very profound, teaching of the apostle Paul in Galatians 5:22:23.Order Jay's book, Analog Christian, here.Visit Jay's site: Jay Kim ThinksVisit Jay on Instagram: @jaykimthinksVisit Janell on Instagram: @janellrardonSubscribe to the podcast and to Janell's biweekly newsletter for MORE free resources and goodies: Subscribe here.Today's Heartlift with janell is currently fully supported by Heartlift International, a 501-3c committed to making home and family the safest, most secure place on earth. What is self-centric despair? Today's guest, Jay Kim, lead pastor of Westgate Church in Silicon Valley, is going to tell us all about it. In his newest book, "Analog Christian: Cultivating Contentment, Resilience, and Wisdom in the Digital Age," Jay writes, "Much of my loss of contentment was connected to the persistent sense of self-centric despair I felt as I continued spiraling down the vortex of comparison loops and contempt systems found within social media." In today's episode, Jay and Janell open a luminous conversation about how digital tools are forming us, or perhaps, deforming us. He helps us see that "the apps we use are actually using us. We are not so much the customers as the products. Each search and click provides valuable data to companies constantly searching for ways to effectively commodify our attention, and more slyly, our addiction." The pace of change in the digital age is staggering. Every year sees the emergence of new platforms, apps, and technologies that each bring possibilities, problems, and power to reshape culture. What should the church's posture be toward new technologies?Should churches be early adopters, seeking to leverage new technologies missionally and ecclesially, rather than being a few steps behind? Or should the church take a more cautious approach—not necessarily antitechnology but at least hesitant about adopting technologies before we've been able to properly consider their potential downsides? Whether we're talking about online church, internet evangelism, apologetics on TikTok, or some future hypothetical (virtual church gatherings in the metaverse?), should churches err on the side of front-footed entrepreneurial embrace or “wait and see” skepticism? These and other related questions are addressed in this debate between Patrick Miller and Jay Kim. Miller and Kim share their arguments and engage in a discussion moderated by Jim Davis, teaching pastor at Orlando Grace Church.– Watch the full-length video debate here.– Access discussion guides for your church or small group.
