In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton explore a common challenge faced by first responders: feeling uncomfortable or unsure about how to accept praise when someone says, “Thank you for your service.” Inspired by a recent post in the Police, Fire, Military, and Families Facebook group, this conversation is for anyone who struggles to navigate these moments with grace and confidence. Why Accepting Praise Can Feel Uncomfortable: Understand why first responders often feel hesitant to accept gratitude, whether it's due to humility, guilt, or the nature of their work. Five Ways to Handle ""Thank You for Your Service"" with Grace: 1. Acknowledge and Accept with a Simple Response: Example: Respond with “Thank you, I appreciate that” or “It's an honor to serve.” Why It's Beneficial: Acknowledging the thanks shows appreciation without making the exchange feel awkward or dismissive. 2. Redirect the Praise Toward the Team: Example: Say, “It's a team effort, and I'm proud to work alongside incredible people.” Why It's Beneficial: Highlighting the collective work of your team shifts the focus and reinforces camaraderie. 3. Use It as an Opportunity to Educate: Example: Respond with, “Thank you—it's a challenging job, but it's worth it when we can make a difference.” Why It's Beneficial: Sharing a little about your role can help bridge understanding and foster a stronger connection with the community. 4. Internalize the Gratitude: Example: Take a moment to reflect on what their praise means, even if it feels uncomfortable in the moment. Why It's Beneficial: Recognizing that their gratitude is genuine can help you embrace your work's positive impact. 5. Be Humble Without Dismissing the Thanks: Example: Avoid minimizing their gratitude by saying things like, “I'm just doing my job.” Instead, say, “Thank you—it means a lot to hear that.” Why It's Beneficial: Validating their thanks makes the interaction meaningful for both parties. Why It's Okay to Feel Awkward: Learn why many first responders find praise uncomfortable and why it's normal to feel this way due to the nature of the profession. How Praise Reflects the Community's Gratitude: Understand how these expressions of thanks represent the community's appreciation for your sacrifices and contributions. Steps to Make These Interactions Easier Over Time: Gain insights into how small mindset shifts and practice can help you feel more confident and comfortable when receiving praise. Why This Matters: As a first responder, your work leaves a profound impact on the communities you serve. Learning how to accept gratitude gracefully not only honors the person offering thanks but also reminds you of the value and importance of your service. Why Is It Important To Not Internalize Everything?

Sometimes, we can get caught in the trap of overthinking and internalizing everything. It's easy to feel like if we just think hard enough about a situation, we can solve it, fix it, or control it. But the truth is, that mindset can actually do more harm than good. When we try to make sense of everything or figure out every little detail, we end up making ourselves anxious, stressed, and emotionally drained. It's like trying to fix something that isn't even broken, or wrestling with things we can't change. Overthinking can keep us stuck in a loop, replaying situations in our minds or imagining every possible outcome. This kind of mental chatter can prevent us from being present in the moment and enjoying life. And sometimes, by overanalyzing or internalizing, we start to take on burdens that don't even belong to us. Not everything needs to be figured out or solved right away, and not everything is within our control. It's really important to give yourself permission to let things be. Sometimes, the best way to handle a situation is to simply step back, breathe, and trust that things will unfold as they're meant to. Overthinking doesn't make things clearer, it just adds weight to your shoulders. Learning to let go, to not internalize every problem, can free up emotional space and help you focus on what really matters—your well-being and peace of mind. We love you all so, so much!

Speaker, author, Keith Ferrin heard someone tell or perform the entire book of Luke on stage for two hours straight. He made a lunch date with the presenter for that next day, a lunch date which lasted nine hours. For the last two decades, Keith's been presenting Scripture by the book as a storyteller. "The Bible is not only meant to be studied, understood and obeyed", Keith says, "it's meant to be enjoyed." We discuss the Thdifference as well as what it means to internalize the word vs memorizing the words. Keith is passionate about helping people know and love God's word and offers great series on YouTube as well as on his website. Keith is offering my Welcome Heart listeners a half-off coupon for two of his great resources: get both for the price of one. One course is called Relational Bible Study. www.keithferrin.com/rbs The other is called The Simplest Way to Internalize the Bible www.keithferrin.com/internalize Use this LINK to get them both for the price of one. His free resource is: The Simplest Way to Study the Bible. LINK HERE. Some gems: People are under the false belief that massive parts of Scripture is confusing so they don't even attempt to read it. The main difference between Christianity and all other religions is this: the Creator saw that His creation was in trouble and He set out to rescue and fix what they can't fix on their own. The Bible is not only true, it's also powerful and amazing and transforming and meant to be enjoyed. I realized that God's Word isn't just to be studied verse-by-verse like little sound bites; rather it's to engage my mind, emotions and soul and that's made all the difference. To internalize Scripture is the know the Word; to memorize Scripture is to know the words.  The more relational we are with Scripture, the more information we will retain. Our primary purpose in reading the Bible is to hang out with Jesus.   To learn more about Keith and how to learn to enjoy the Bible, follow Keith on all social platforms @keithferrin or his website: keithferrin.com.

The Secret Superpower of a Great Communicator A great communicator's secret superpower lies in building rapport and establishing trust, crucial not only during negotiations but also in everyday interactions. Ensuring open lines of communication, being genuine, and actively listening to others fosters an environment where business relationships can flourish and thrive. By making an effort to comprehend and appreciate the thoughts and concerns of those around them, communicators create spaces where synergy and innovation occur. In their conversation, Scott Harvey highlights how successful communication can translate to improved personal and professional relationships. In his experiences, he found that understanding and goodwill towards colleagues led to more harmonious work environments and less employee attrition. Harvey emphasizes the need for effective communication and rapport-building to create strong bonds within a company or team, paving the way for shared goals and collaborative success. Building Rapport Building rapport extends beyond simple pleasantries and becomes an essential ingredient for successful long-term relationships. It involves investing time and effort in getting to know others on a personal level, understanding their values and aspirations. As rapport is established, people begin to trust and feel comfortable in expressing their thoughts and seeking guidance from those around them. This foundation of trust is vital in both personal and professional settings, fostering more trusting, respectful, and harmonious relationships. Scott Harvey delves into the significance of building rapport with those he worked with throughout his career. During the conversation, he mentions examples of how he connected with colleagues, their families, and even sending thank you notes to their spouses. By building a solid sense of camaraderie and respect with his peers, he was able to engage in more effective and impactful work environments. Harvey posits that establishing rapport with others can serve as a catalyst for success in personal and professional circles. The Importance of Listening in Negotiations Being an attentive listener is a significant factor in any successful negotiation. Listening is an acquired skill that requires practice and patience, allowing others to have a platform to express themselves and challenge notions openly. Active listening entails providing direct responses to the speaker, ensuring they have the assurance that their thoughts have been comprehended and taken into account. This critical component of negotiation forges understanding, minimizing misunderstandings, and promoting productive dialogue. While discussing his experiences as a hostage negotiator, Scott Harvey talks about the importance of establishing rapport during high-pressure situations and allowing people to vent – letting emotions dissipate and logic to take control. Harvey shares that the primary aim is to listen intently to what the other person is saying without taking it personally, forming a connection instead. By handling delicate communication effectively, negotiators can establish a framework where both parties can express their concerns, build trust, and work toward a mutually agreeable outcome.
