In the performance art of professional wrestling, many of the top stars are assigned a gimmick. Some work, some don't. But there was one, that on it's face shouldn't have worked. Unless you're Brutus Beefcake (real name Ed Leslie), he made what seemed ridiculous into a wrestling sensation. It was 1988 when Beefcake had languished in the mid-card of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) with some success.

Imagine the pitch meeting - "It's Santa Claus, right, but this one has muscles!" PRINT THE MONEY! Now, the rest of us are left to pick up the pieces of Hulk Hogan's Santa With Muscles (1996). Previous Hulk Hogan movies had him playing different versions of himself, and here he attempts to act and play a different character. It goes about as well as you'd expect. Many questions will be answered - how did Mila Kunis bury this performance? How can a lawn ornament bench press 300 pounds? Why is Ed Leslie playing an Asian? The last ever Starrcade !! Was it any good ?

Welcome back to Reading Wrestling, your encyclopedia on the art of pro wrestling. Today's entry is a complicated topic related to identity. And identity theft is not a joke, listener. Much like actors play disparate and dissimilar roles, a wrestler's character or gimmick can change. Today, on Reading Wrestling, we'll talk about the many faces of a single performer.We start off talking about abrupt changes of character, the first time we saw a wrestler we knew adopt an altogether different gimmick. These character changes have a degree of amnesia, in that the performer does not acknowledge that they were once someone else.  Dave talks about the history of Scott Hall's character changes from Starship Coyote through the Diamond Stud, Razor Ramon, and finally his use of his real name. Noell talks about the evolution of Jonathan Huber from Luke Harper to Brodie Lee.  Chris raises the many faces of Fred Ottman, particularly his character change from gregariousTugboat to the pernicious Typhoon. This takes us down a rabbit hole discussing John Tenta, from Earthquake to...Golga?..and the Shark. We move on to talking about types of character changes, including changes of character (in the sense of changing outlooks and values). Noell takes us to Miss Elizabeth (a favorite of hers) and her change from a kind of demure power in the WWF to her heel manager persona in WCW. Chris takes us to the evolution from Surfer Sting to Crow Sting. Dave tells us about the history of Barry Windham. We talk about how, as the world and dominant aesthetics changed, characters were forced to update their gimmicks accordingly. Some wrestlers have had more character changes than others. We go around and talk about wrestlers we associate with extensive character changes. Dave gives us an extensive sketch of the career of Ed Leslie, best known for his time as Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake.  Noell brings us to Bray Wyatt's "characters within a character." Chris raises the classic example of Mick Foley's many faces, including Dude Love, Mankind, Cactus Jack, and finally the character Mick Foley, who is distinct from the man Mick Foley. To clearly summarize, we try to clear up the question of how that guy used to be this guy but he's no longer that guy and is instead this guy. Some major professional wrestling events are forever known as "the show with that match". Uncensored 1996 is one of those events. This issue left a little something to be desired, so our hosts had to make their own fun… with a little help from their buddy Whiskey. This week of rasslin goodness starts the way last week ended.  We review WCW Nitro from 02/19/96 where the show kicks off with a Hogan vs. Arn Anderson rematch.  This match involves some confusing run ins but who's trying to figure this stuff out anyways?  Loch ness then wrestles, if that's what you want to call it, Alex Wright.  We have the Nitro debut of Fit Finlay, then known as "The Belfast Bruiser.  He and his glorious mullet will take on Brad Armstrong and his equally glorious mullet!  The main event puts Savage against Flair.  This match involves all kinds of nonsensical interference and ends with Ed Leslie as "The Booty Man" channeling the gods and saving the day.  At least we get some more antics at the announcer booth at the end which has Hogan really trying to get over Leslie's Booty gimmick.
