Yes, we will start with a huge vocal note to make people turn around and listen. Yes, I will say in the studio, give me some hair-raising guitar windmills. Let's do that. You waste thirty seconds and you've lost it.”Equally, MEEK's visual aesthetic is once seen, never forgotten. She wants to reclaim dressing up for everyone, not just those that can afford to indulge in the monied whimsy of high fashion. “I have a clear visual thing for myself, which is basically prom outfits for poor people.” She's the Cinderella who flipped a finger at the Ugly Sisters, then invited them along to join in the fun, too. “It's about being absolute glam-trash and owning it. That pink tulle over a stained Adidas jacket? Throw it on. I just want it to feel like something anybody can put together themselves, a sustainable way to look fucking wild. Why not?” The best thing about MEEK? There is a point to her. She is as if the comedy queen, Daisy May Cooper stumbled into a charity shop, found a bunch of glittering second hand couture, dolled herself up shamelessly in it, injected the raw spirit of Freddie Mercury and emerged, Mr Ben style, as a fully-fledged MEGASTAR in the making out of the changing rooms, then lead a troubadour of misfits singing down the high street. There is not what you might call a shortage of self-confidence in MEEK. Am 21. April 2016 ist Ausnahmetalent Prince gestorben. Auf dem SWR Podcastfestival 2026 haben wir ihn und seinem legendären Album "Purple Rain" gefeiert – mit spannenden Gästen. "Purple Rain" von Prince gilt als sein großes Meisterwerk, auch wenn er mit anderen Alben wie zum Beispiel "Sign O' The Times" ebenfalls sehr erfolgreich gewesen ist. Für den Auftritt beim SWR Podcastfestival in Mannheim am 12. April 2026 hat sich das Team der Meilensteine dieses legendäre Album ausgesucht, weil sich im April der Todestag von Prince zum 10. Mal jährt. Am 21. April 2016 gegen 19 Uhr abends hat sich die Meldung vom plötzlichen Tod des Megastars wie ein Lauffeuer in der deutschen Medienlandschaft verbreitet. Mit "Purple Rain" verändert sich vieles für Prince. Zum einen kann er sein Management und das Label überzeugen, dass "Purple Rain" nicht nur ein Album wird, sondern auch ein Film. An der Idee eines Films hatte der Künstler schon länger gearbeitet, erzählt Stephan Fahrig im Podcast. Neben dem Album war auch der Film "Purple Rain" sehr erfolgreich. Er spielte an den Kinokassen das Zehnfache seiner Kosten ein und wurde zusätzlich noch mit einem Oscar ausgezeichnet – für den besten Filmsong! Aber noch eine wichtige Sache verändert sich: Ab dem Album "Purple Rain" hat Prince eine feste Band an seiner Seite, statt wie vorher verschiedene, einzelne Musiker. Der Name der Band: The Revolution. Und mit der festen Band ändert sich auch die Arbeitsweise von Prince, denn ab sofort sollte es feste Proben geben – teilweise zehn bis 12 Stunden pro Tag. Zu Gast in der Alten Feuerwache in Mannheim war auch Jens Ritter. Er ist Gitarrenbauer aus Deidesheim und hat gleich mehrere Gitarren für Prince gebaut. Im Interview auf der Bühne hat erzählte er, wie die Verbindung zu dem Megastar entstanden ist. Er berichtete auch, wie es für ihn war, Prince zu treffen. Für Jens Ritter hat Prince nämlich nicht nur den Stempel "Rock- und Poplegende" sondern auch "Lifecoach". "Diese Stunden und dieser Tag haben mein Leben tatsächlich extrem verändert", erzählt Ritter im Gespräch mit Reporter Patrick Schütz. Der Song "Purple Rain" ist nicht nur der letzte Song auf dem legendären und gleichnamigen Album von Musikikone Prince, sondern es war auch der letzte Song, den er jemals öffentlich performt hat, nur wenige Tage vor seinem Tod am 21. Mit seinem überdrehten, überzogenen und frechen Alter Ego "Slim Shady" schaffte Eminem es 1999 in den USA schon bis in die Top Ten der Charts. In Deutschland blieb der Künstler eher noch ein Underground-Name, den eingefleischte Hip-Hop- und Rapfans feierten. Mit "The Marshall Mathers LP", seinem dritten Album, landet Eminem auch bei uns in Europa auf Spitzenplätzen der Albumcharts. Der bürgerliche Name von Eminem ist Marshall Bruce Mathers III. Damit wird schon beim Blick auf den Albumtitel "The Marshall Mathers LP" klar: Hier wird es sehr persönlich. Nach "The Slim Shady LP" demaskiert Rapper Eminem sich hier an vielen Stellen – aber eben nicht an allen. Welche Person in den einzelnen Songs zu uns spricht, entdeckt man auf diesem Album oft erst auf den zweiten Blick: Ist es der Mensch Marshall Mathers, der Rapper Eminem oder doch wieder sein Alter Ego "Slim Shady"? Eminem erzählt auf seinem Album "The Marshall Mathers LP" viele Geschichten. Es geht viel um Gewalt und Drogen – Themen, die ihn schon sein ganzes Leben beschäftigen. Von seinem Vater verlassen landet Eminem mit seiner Mutter Deborah im Kindesalter in einem Trailerpark in Warren, einem Vorort von Detroit. Zu Schulzeiten bringt ihn sein nur wenige Jahre älterer Onkel und bester Freund Ronnie zum Hip-Hop. Die Jugendzeit ist für Eminem ist besonders hart. Seine Mutter ist von Tabletten abhängig und gewalttätig, sein Onkel Ronnie nimmt sich das Leben und Eminem bricht die Schule ab. Viele diese Themen verarbeitet Eminem in seinen Songs. Wer nur kurz in die Platte reinhört, bekommt den Eindruck, dass es hier nur um vulgäre Beleidigungen, Gewaltfantasien und Drogen geht. Dabei setzt Eminem sich an vielen Stellen von "The Marshall Mathers LP" mit den Schattenseiten des neuerworbenen Ruhms auseinander. Was erwartet das Plattenlabel von mir? Was erwarten die Fans? Und was macht dieser Druck mit mir und meinem Umfeld? Immer wieder wurde Eminem als homophob und frauenfeindlich kritisiert. Von hohen politischen Ämtern und von Aktivisten wurde gegen ihn mobil gemacht. Dabei wurde ihm auch vorgeworfen, Täter, wie zum Beispiel die des Amoklaufs an der Columbine High School durch seine Songtexte mit expliziten Gewaltfantasien angeheizt und motiviert zu haben. Eminem selbst weist in seiner Musik immer wieder darauf hin, dass man seine Songs nicht zu ernst nehmen sollte und er gerne übertreibt. Klar ist, Eminem will provozieren. "The Marshall Mathers LP" ist ein Album, das mit seinen sehr transparenten, eingängigen und markanten Beats (zum Großteil von Hip-Hop-Legende Dr. Dre) definitiv im Ohr bleibt und auch Spaß macht. Aber die Platte fordert den Hörer sehr, denn die Texte von Eminem, wenn sie auch vollgepackt sind mit – bewusst provozierenden – Ausdrücken und mehr als vulgären Beleidigungen, ist unglaublich tiefgründig und vielschichtig. Kent Monkman is one of the most vital and provocative voices in contemporary painting. Based between Toronto and New York, and a member of the Fisher River Cree Nation in Treaty 5 Territory, Monkman is known for his epic, genre-bending canvases that challenge dominant historical narratives and reframe them through Indigenous and queer perspectives. Monkman has developed a distinctive visual language that subverts classical European art traditions—particularly those of 19th-century and 20th-century history painting—to expose the distortions and omissions of colonial narratives. His work blends these European conventions with Indigenous histories, recontextualizing colonization while exploring themes of resilience, sexuality, joy, and identity. At the center of many of these works is Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, Monkman's time-traveling alter ego. Clad in high heels, Miss Chief operates as both a trickster figure and a witness to colonial encounters, embodying Indigenous worldviews and queering history in a way that destabilizes settler-colonial perspectives. Through Miss Chief, Monkman reimagines historical events, placing Indigenous presence and agency at the forefront. Monkman's large-scale commissions include mistikôsiwak (Wooden Boat People), a pair of monumental paintings created for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2019, which directly confronted the institution's colonial legacies. His work has been exhibited in major museums across North America and Europe, and is part of significant public and private collections. As his first major U.S. museum exhibition, "History is Painted by the Victors," opens at the Denver Art Museum, Monkman joined me to reflect on the road to this moment—a journey that spans decades of challenging entrenched narratives in Western art history. We spoke about how growing up in Winnipeg, amidst the complexities of Indigenous representation in Canadian institutions, shaped his relationship to museums; how painting serves as both a political tool and a personal method for processing historical trauma; and the collaborative energy that fuels his expansive studio practice.
