A day after the Lakers added free agent center/PF Christian Wood, there are plenty more questions to ask. His talent, at least offensively, is undeniable, but what about attitude and fit? Well, to that end he said some stuff to Marc Spears at ESPN's Andscape that raised some eyebrows. There are other important questions to kick around. Like, does Wood start or come off the bench? On the one hand, given Anthony Davis's long expressed preferences to play power forward, many have assumed that this move allows him to do just that. Wood starts at C, right? Well, maybe not. There are many, many compelling reasons to bring Wood off the bench. So which side of the argument will win out? Moreover, plenty of people are talking about this as a "risk-free" move for the Lakers. Is that the right framing? Meanwhile, there is a lot of attention being paid to Wood the talent, but what about Wood the guy? Some believe he's seen himself as entitled. Well, on the way out the door from Dallas, he said the following to ESPN, expressing great enthusiasm for joining the Lakers... and taking a shot at his former employer: "I've always wanted to be a Laker. I know we can win a championship,” Wood told Spears. “Communication with a coach is a big key. Coach Ham and I go back to our Milwaukee days and we've had great conversations everyday about this opportunity. He believes in me and told me I'll be playing a big role and knows what I can do.” Okay! Good start! Now, the kicker: "I'm looking forward to this and fasure motivated after what Dallas did.” What did they do? And is it smart to even go in this direction? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What is Christian Wood's role for the Lakers? Does he start? Come off the bench? SEGMENT 2: Listeners/Viewers react to the Wood signing. SEGMENT 3: Wood takes a shot at the Mavs... and adds real options to Darvin Ham's rotation. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! In the weeks since Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest after a hit during a Monday Night Football game, the McKees Rocks native has recovered enough to go home and the NFL has kept on playing. [REBROADCAST FROM September 9, 2022] NFL stars Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, and Lamar Jackson are all-star quarterbacks dominating in a position once rarely held by Black men. As the NFL season kicks off, we hear from Jason Reid, senior NFL reporter for ESPN's Andscape, and author of the book, The Rise of the Black Quarterback: What it Means for America.
Marvel's Black Panther has always been more than a superhero franchise. Since the first film came out in 2018, the characters and their utopian home, the fictional African nation of Wakanda, have become ingrained in popular culture. “Wakanda forever” became more than a line from a movie — it transformed into shorthand for Black pride and excellence. Now, the long-awaited sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is once again redefining the genre. Filmed after the death of star Chadwick Boseman, who had played King T'Challa aka the Black Panther, director Ryan Coogler decided the movie would tackle the tragedy head on, and show a nation in mourning. This week on Into America, Trymaine Lee sits down with Kelley Carter, a reporter for ESPN's Andscape, to talk about why the franchise resonates so deeply, and how the sequel deals with grief and the legacy of the Black Panther. Trymaine also speaks to author Eve L. Ewing, who writes Marvel's Ironheart comic series, about the importance of Black superheroes. For a transcript, please visit msnbc.com/intoamerica. Today, Black Americans make up roughly 13% of the U.S. population but hold just 3% of the country's wealth. The median net worth of a White family in the United States in 2019 was $188,200, as compared with $24,100 for a Black family. The racial wealth gap is large, persists across income groups, and has not changed in over a century. We discussed issues such as reparations, the breadth and scope needed to really affect change as well as the history of financial barriers faced by Black people in securing vital loans. Wealth matters because it is a fundamental determinant of health. Health equity strategies that fail to address the racial wealth gap will be ineffective. In particular Black Maternal health crisis continues to persist. Tune in to listen to this episode of the Holistic Wealth podcast with Keisha Blair and special guest, Danté Stewart. Have you ever heard of the “Rooney Rule?” It's been an NFL hiring policy for decades, but it's not clear how well it's working. (At the end of last season, Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin was the only Black head coach left standing.) City Cast's Morgan Moody is with her friend Martenzie Johnson, a sports writer for ESPN's Andscape, talking about how it got passed, why it's named after Steelers ownership, and why it's still *very* relevant today.
