Welcome to the Tearsheet Podcast. I’m Zack Miller. When the pandemic hit, lending models didn’t catch up quickly enough. Machine learning, like the kind Zest AI has developed, moved quicker, helping lenders to figure out how quickly things were deteriorating and where. ML models also have been instrumental in identifying and avoiding biases in lending practices. Zest AI CEO Mike de Vere joins us on the podcast to discuss his firms go to market strategy and business model and how the two kind of fit nicely. Mike shares his views on how to bring technology to lending and specifically, de-biasing models to approve more minority borrowers. Mike de Vere is my guest today on the Tearsheet Podcast. Before we jump into our show, I wanted to tell you about Tearsheet’s upcoming Challengers Conference. A first of its kind show, this 2-day online conference is everything about digital banking. We’ll have senior executives from top challenger banks like N26, Revolut, OakNorth, and Betterment as well as new entrants to the digital banking market, like Intuit and Credit Sesame. It’s all happening September 22 and 24th. Go to Tearsheet.co and click on Conferences at the top to learn more.

'Science Fair' is an exuberant new documentary hailed by critics as "inspirational and invigorating," "brilliant and quirky" and an "ode to the teenage science geeks on who our future depends." Winner of audience awards at Sundance, SXSW and the Flula Borg Sofa-O-Rama Film Fëstival, National Geographic Documentary Films' 'Science Fair' follows nine high school students from all over the earth as they navigate rivalries, fainting spells and, of course, teenage hormones, on their journey to compete at The International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). On this episode of BOOM TIME, the DuPont Award-winning filmmakers Cristina Costantini and Darren Foster tell Flula and Alex about how they made 'the best movie of 2018,' according to Flula Borg. It's the most science-y episöde yet and it starts right now!
Adam and Ben wade through a pretty slow and sluggish episode of Game Of Thrones which somehow manages to feature a literal bear and still not be exciting. What an incredible feat! There is a pretty fantastic scene with Charles Dance, though. We also answer some more listener questions in the Sealed Section and talk about Edinburgh. Adam is in Edinburgh, by the way! Go see him do stand up there and give him a TV show maybe. Ok bye.
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION “Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” —Martin Luther King, Jr. Life is neither equal of fair, so we must learn to find justice in the life and psyche of our world that tends to be terrible and impossible at times. Justice is rooted in the word just which means behaving according to what is morally right and fair. This makes it hard to believe that life is fair. So, if indeed you feel that life isn’t fair, then how can we access and execute justice? During May, All Souls will present weekly discussions, sermons and lectures around the subject of the human virtue and vice of justice, fairness and equality. *Musical performance by Sarah Maud (vocals) and Jordan Hehl (bass). The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In a childhood version of ethics and faith, good things happen to good people. Yet tragedy and misfortune are much less discriminating than that. A drunk driver hits a car and survives, while in the hit car a small child dies. Such events defy all concepts of fairness. Religions too often seem to become apologists for a God who would create such a cruel world. And many Atheists site such cruelty as proof that there can be no God. Often, in people’s explanations of how and why bad things happen to good people, they unwittingly present theories and theologies that not only insult our intelligence but that ought to insult even “the gods!” This Sunday, I want to have a courageous and honest conversation about why life is not fair and what we might do about it.
