S3E25 (100 overall!) - For the Glory KC is back with the 100th episode of the show! Wow... 100! Since it's the 100th episode, we did things a little different this week. The first segment takes a more historical look Sporting Kansas City and our relationship to the team. We tell stories about how we got into Sporting KC and our journey to this point. Then we do our all-time Sporting KC starting XI, except we really just did a team from the last decade (as is explained in the pod). I finally got a chance to ask Remi Walter about his contract and sprung that news on his biggest fan, my co-host Sheena, during the episode to get her live reaction. We briefly went into the last three Sporting KC games, but instead of breaking down each one, since it's been over a week since that Seattle Sounders game, we took themes from each game and worked them into the episode. The three big topics were: Who is playing in the double pivot and how it impacted the team The whole penalty kick debacle against Minnesota United that ultimately eliminated SKC from the playoffs this year And the news that Pulido has been hurt for much of 2024, like we speculated We also had to discuss the sad news of Felipe Hernandez being released. The KC Current played exclusively on Amazon Prime since we last did an episode so that limited the audience and their time on the episode, though they did clinch the playoffs! In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few topics, including: US U-20 Youth National Team winning Bronze in the World Cup Three SKC players are free agents per the MLSPA (and why Remi isn't) Sporting KC U Pass Season Ticket deal Gianluca Busio's contract extension USMNT hire Mauricio Pochetino  And the Chicago Fire may be hiring Gregg Berhalter in the "Vermes role" Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): 100th Episode - 3:14 Podcast Origin Story - 6:47 How we Became SKC fans - 11:51 Sporting KC Team of the Decade - 20:50 Remi Walter's Contract - 46:27 Three SKC Game Speed Round - 54:45 SKC Penalty Kick Debacle - 1:00:38 Pulido has been hurt? - 1:15:53 Felipe Hernandez's Contract is Terminated - 1:19:47 KC Current - 1:23:27 Digital Crawl - 1:29:39 Upcoming Schedule: Sporting KC @ LAFC (US Open Cup) - Wed. Things are rotten in the state of Missouri(or Kansas), and a predictably hard portion of the SKC schedule has produced two more frustrating losses making it 10 losses from the last 12 games.  But, look on the bright side, at least the San Jose Earthquakes exist.  While both of the games did end in losses to very good teams in the LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake, there was actually some semblance of positivity due to the significantly improved chance creation over those games.  They also tried some alternate tactics and players that have at least in moments appeared to breathe some life into the attack.  The team still struggles to defend in transition, but at least they aren't as depressing to watch in possession.  Either that, or things are so bad that fans will find anything that appears the least bit positive to latch onto. American Soccer Analysis released their annual league survey addressing the analytics departments of every team in MLS, and unsurprisingly, Sporting KC was 5th from last in the league in the survey.  It is hard not to correlate their poor run of form lately with the limitations(perceived or valid) of their analytics practice, and continue to think that this club is falling further and further behind its rivals in multiple areas.  We will dive into the information from this survey, what it really means, and how it's not as simple as saying “do analytics” and things all of a sudden get better. Finally, a number of topics in Potpourri, including a rumored acquisition from Norway that now appears to be incorrect, some sad news regarding Felipe Hernandez, our update on the fun soccer in KC being played by the Current, and a quick look at both continental competitions happening this summer before we do a quick preview of Aidan Morris' farewell match vs. SKC. For the Glory KC

S3E24 - For the Glory KC is back with the 89th episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City have returned to their losing ways, unfortunately. After a hopeful win at home against the Seattle Sounders, they dropped a result to the LA Galaxy 4-2 in California. There were some interesting lineup choices, lots of standing around on the first goal and lots of things to talk about that are pretty negative from the game. However, was there something to build on? The underlying numbers are actually not that bad. Sporting KC were creating chances, they just didn't finish them. That, sadly, feels like progress from all these games where it felt like they can't even get a decent shot off. The issue is, it's all too late as the season is in the back half and they just lost again. Unfortunately, we have to talk about the elephant in the room that is Felipe Hernandez. He was suspended for the second time for gambling related violations. It really feels like we'll never see Felipe in a Sporting KC uniform again. The question is, what sort of punishment is he in for? I'd assume he'll not be allowed to play in Major League Soccer, but how far or wide could a ban/suspension go? Then we talk about the Peter Vermes interview in the KC Star with Daniel Sperry about the upcoming transfer window. On the pod we try to look long-term since any move will come too late in the season if the team hasn't already gone on a great winning streak. Vermes mentions the need for an attacking midfielder, in somewhat of a contrast to what Mike Illig said last week about needing a winger and a central defender. The Kansas City Current unfortunately couldn't carry Kansas City soccer this weekend settling for a 2-2 draw to the Chicago Red Stars. It led to a discussion about rivalries in the NWSL. It sort of feels like the only rival the Current have right now, is the referees. In the Digital Crawl, we hit a few other topics, including: SKC II lose Camille Ashton found a new, very similar, NWSL job SKC injury updates for Salloi, Remi and Rosero A KC Current injury update for Vanessa DiBernardo Lots of US Soccer news and Pitchside Coffee by several KC Current players Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Sporting KC lose again - 4:41 Felipe Hernandez suspended - 27:41 Vermes gives a transfer update - 44:01 KC Current draw at home - 58:05 Digital Crawl - 1:07:22 Upcoming Schedule: Sporting KC vs. Real Salt Lake - Wednesday, June 19th @ 7:30 PM CT Sporting KC at Columbus Crew - Saturday, June 22nd @ 6:30 PM KC Current at Portland Thorns - Sunday, June 23rd @ 3:00 PM Sporting KC II at St. Louis City II - Sunday, June 23rd @ 6:00 PM We recently turned on "Listener Support." S3E13 - For the Glory KC is back with the 78th episode of the show! This week, we have a very special episode with not one, not two, but three hosts! I'm joined by some familiar names to those of you that read the KC Soccer Journal. Juan Cisneros and Xander Kennedy make their For the Glory KC debuts! Don't worry, Sheena will be back, but we just closed out an eight-day road trip with a seven-and-a-half-hour drive and only one of us was a soccer sicko enough to immediately make a podcast. We start the show with some Sporting Kansas City love as they picked up a huge three points on the road against Toronto FC. Sporting KC managed to pull off the win without the injured Alan Pulido (not to mention Johnny Russell and Andreu Fontas). It begs the question, is that a good or bad thing? Xander, Juan and I break down the lack of production from the forward line, but the goals still coming in elsewhere. We also get into the bangers scored by Remi Walter and Jake Davis, as well as the highly repeatable Alenis Vargas goal if Peter Vermes sticks with trusting his young and pacey backups. Plus, we can't avoid the goal at the death from Toronto, which was apparently over a half of a foot offside. In addition to all the goals scored, we dash around to various other topics including Memo Rodriguez stepping up his game, Sporting KC's propensity to shoot from distance, the return of Felipe Hernandez, Robert Voloder continuing to start and the return of the refs as PRO and the PSRA reached a new CBA. Before we fully move off of Sporting KC, we have to talk about Roger Espinoza returning for at least one game and it won't be too far from Kansas City. He will be joining the Des Moines Menace this Wednesday in the US Open Cup as they take on Union Omaha (in Nebraska). Which begs the question, who else should join Des Moines (or any other team) to try to make a cup run? The KC Current continued their strong form as well as they climbed to the top of the table off their third straight win. There were goals scored by Vanessa DiBernardo, Alexa Spaanstra, Temwa Chawinga and Bia, but it feels like they could have scored so many more. We also get into the level of their competition through the first three weeks and of course, the set piece defending. Plus, does the NWSL have a VAR problem? We've got some thoughts! In the Digital Crawl, we touch on the following topics: Kei Kamara to LAFC International call-ups for the KC Current International club soccer coming to CPKC Stadium USMNT over Mexico in the Nations League And the Messi/Arrowhead update Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Meet the Guest Hosts - 1:38 Sporting KC win on the road! - 4:47 Are these SKC goals sustainable? - 15:59 Repeatable goals, Sporting KC youth and Toronto's offside goal - 23:00 Roger Espinoza and the Des Moines Menace - 43:42 KC Current win at home (again)! - 55:27 Digital Crawl - 1:16:15 Upcoming Schedule: The KC Current have TWO weeks off Inter Miami vs. CF Monterrey (CCC) - Wednesday, April 3rd at 7:00 PM CST Des Moines Menace @ Union Omaha (US Open) - Wednesday, April 3rd at 7:30 PM USWNT vs Japan - Saturday, April 6th at 11:30 AM Sporting KC vs. Portland Timbers - Sunday, April 7th at 12:30 PM Spotify took away our ads, so we turned on "Listener Support." Lord have mercy, Sporting KC won an MLS match, and looked largely competent in doing so! It's been a minute since we've had the opportunity to analyze a victory so apologies if we are a bit out of practice. Drew and Cody break down a fairly comprehensive performance by SKC in Seattle, by far the most complete performance of the year by the club so far. Lots of love for the spacing and movement in the midfield, as well as a very positive performance by Jake Davis at right back. The team looks much more like the one we have become accustomed to watching, and we are hopeful this is the beginning of a string of performances of that ilk. A discussion around Felipe Hernandez, his fit with this club, and what his abilities are and whether this is the best place for them to be effectively used. We both think he has value, but perhaps that value is misread slightly. Do Coaches really matter? We spend some time on the topic after John Muller posted an extremely interesting article in The Athletic challenging that exact notion. A Zapruder-esque deep dive into the scuffle between the Preki and the SKC technical staff after the game. Drew goes hard on this one to clearly analyze every part of this interaction. Finally a quick convo of the upcoming matches this week and our hopes for continued success. Music by The Spin Wires

Reinforcements cannot come soon enough. Sporting KC got it's first point of the season with a draw in Colorado vs the Rapids, but they've yet to a score in the first two matches. Wasn't the offense supposed to be the part we didn't have to worry about? Marinos Tzionis got the start on the right wing over Khiry Shelton. It's not a great place to be right now in the absence of Johnny Russell. We have a tough conversation about who should be starting. After a stellar introduction to MLS last season, some of the shine has worn off striker Willy Agada in the first two matches. Is the team not giving him enough service... or is it self inflicted? We saw more shaky moments from Robert Voloder and Ben Sweat. John Pulskamp came up with some big saves, but we still aren't sure he's ready. But there are problems on all three lines. Without Kinda and Radoja, who is nowhere to be found, the midfield is in trouble. Felipe Hernandez & Cam Duke might have hit their ceilings. Learn more about your ad choices. We're back! And SKC have extended their positive run of form to 8 games with 2 more wins and a draw and only 1 loss across the last 2 months. We spend more time evaluating the underlying numbers of Willy Agada and Erik Thommy's performances since arriving in KC(spoiler alert: They good). Also, a discussion around off-season squad construction now that we know what pieces will be in place and where the areas of need will be. Robbie Voloder has a wonderful game against DC United and is a halftime sub against Minnesota, which was a bit of a surprising development. Felipe Hernandez and Kayden Pierre also continue to impress, while Cam Duke struggles. Signing Ben Sweat makes a lot more sense when the team has more possession and midfield control, and we discuss SKC's visually inept performance at set pieces, or more specifically, corner kicks. Drew is back from LA after bringing back one lowly point on the trip. We discuss what was a fairly mixed performance from Sporting KC. There were positives we have become familiar with over the past 6 weeks, and negatives we have seen a lot this season. In any other circumstance, a 2-2 draw at LA would be a decent result, so we need to take that in context. A discussion around the fairly disparate profiles of those in both fullback positions vs. their counterparts, and whether SKC had the appropriate time to alter the game plan to adjust for them. They did after about 20 minutes, but it felt like a bit of an emergency change. After we saw Erik Thommy easily look like the best player on the field against San Jose, this time Riqui Puig took that crown fairly substantially. Another very solid sub appearance from Felipe Hernandez, who definitely has had 2 of his more impactful performances of the year in the last 2 games. And some USMNT/European soccer discourse to close out the pod. Music by The Spin Wires

The Media Game was a success. In that Thad survived. Cody missed the email. But the worse things get for Sporting KC.. the more we have to talk about. We though the low point of the season had come months ago. The team seemed to be playing better than the beginning of the season. But here we are again. A new low point. We second guess Peter Vermes' lineup choice for the Open Cup Semifinal in Sacramento, as well as his choices for PK takers. How does Graham Zusi go 5th? Felipe Hernandez is developing a bit of a reputation. Did yelling at the keeper inspire him to make the winning save? Youthful mistakes were a trend the next game against Austin FC as Cam Duke was sent off with an embarrassing second yellow card and Jonathan Pulskamp let in an inexcusable goal between his legs. It turns out, all they had to do was listen to the show! Peter Vermes has deployed a different style and formation in the last two matches for Sporting KC, albeit out of necessity due to injuries & suspensions. But the change has yielded two straight results in league play. One worrying note is a potential trend developing in which the defense concedes an ugly goal early in the second half. Robert Voloder took some blame on this one, but he might have been the only one actually defending. A look at the current MLS Western Conference table is quite jarring when compared to last year's playoffs. Sporting KC is not the only team struggling. Seattle, Portland, Colorado, & Vancouver are all at the bottom of the table at the moment. All of a sudden the young guys on the roster are starting to impress. Homegrowns Cam Duke & Felipe Hernandez are looking solid, while all three international U-22's are key contributors as well. "God bless Ben Sweat." But it's really important how you say it. Sitting in 11th place in the Western Conference, Sporting KC have had a rough start to the season. Injuries, key international absences, and new players still getting acclimated to MLS have plagued this team so far. But this is Sports Talk. We're here to assign blame and point fingers. We try to decide the one glaring issue holding them back. Is it Peter Vermes' roster construction? Is it a lack of talent in the midfield compared to the rest of the league? What about the attacking core? The show is torn on Ben Sweat, but ready for Logan Ndenbe to return. Felipe Hernandez hasn't quite taken the next step this team was needing. But where is his ceiling? Gadi Kinda will return at some point, but will he solve all the issues? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Was the match in Chicago terrible.. or just bad? The midfield is starting to become a real worry. Roger Espinoza wasn't supposed to be playing this much. Remi Walter is inconsistent. Will Cam Duke & Felipe Hernandez take that next step? Nikola Vujnovic hasn't had much of an impact on the attack in his first two games.. Do you miss Khiry Shelton yet? We give an update on the injury status for several players as Sporting KC prepares to face Real Salt Lake this weekend. Who, by the way, are somehow at the top of the Western Conference. Sporting KC held Media Day on Wednesday and they gave us all whiskey and pretzels. We brag about all the inside knowledge picked up at the open-to-the-public session. Is Graham Zusi allowed an "old man day" from training? Felipe Hernandez has most of the show excited and ready for a breakout season. After finally decided on what to actually call Oriol "Uri" Rosell, we try to figure out what three players will start in the midfield for the home opener vs the Houston Dynamo. If Paulo Nagamura's first match at the helm is any indication, Houston won't exactly be trying to play "jogo bonito" this weekend. Learn more about your ad choices.
