S3E38 - For the Glory KC is back with the 103rd episode of the show. After a week off, the podcast returns. Sporting Kansas City also had a week off, and now we know the offseason schedule, so the urgency to do our fantasy Sporting Director episode has waned for a week. It'll make a great topic for next week. This week though, we briefly talk about the action on the field in the season finale. Sporting KC lost 2-1 to FC Dallas, but technically outscored them if you count that Joaquin Fernandez own goal. The more interesting topic of conversation was the lineup, but more so, who wasn't available and why. Suddenly added to the injury report were Jake Davis, Johnny Russell and Remi Walter. Also out were Andreu Fontas, Khiry Shelton and the known surgery to Dany Rosero. It could have been the absolute last chance to see a handful of those guys. Oh, and Tim Leibold played right back. That was something. After the game, Sheena and I reflect on the season. Technically it's the second worst record ever, but there are more games now, so the points may be inflated. Was it actually the worst season ever? We also gave our takes on the Sporting KC Pitch Black award winners, and we only took umbrage with one category: Newcomer of the Year. Memo Rodriguez was snubbed, and we have the stats to back it up. Things were happier on the Missouri side of soccer as the KC Current just keep winning. Two more wins for the ladies, but they still linger in fourth place as the Washington Spirit and Gotham refuse to drop a single point. In the last nine days, the Current have defeated expansion Bay FC and the San Diego Wave and Temwa Chawinga has just kept shattering records. We have some funny press conference stories, and of course, cover the retirement of Desiree Scott. Since Sporting KC are done, we also circled back to the MLS Cup Playoffs and our retired segment, the Messi Update. Inter Miami set the single season points record, and Messi led the league in goal contributions, despite missing significant time. Atlanta United snuck into the playoffs (shades of SKC in 2023) and Sheena will not be watching the 18-team playoff. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few topics, including: KC Current's international call-ups for Mace, Ballisager, Prince and Magaia A Bia Zaneratto injury update SKC U-15 call-ups and a Benny Feilhaber stat The KC Comets schedule is out! S3E37 - For the Glory KC is back with the 102nd episode of the show. Sporting Kansas City are one game away from the end of their 2024 season, but it's effectively over. This past Saturday served as the final home game of the season. According to my colleague, Mike Kuhn, a statistically terrible one. We keep our conversation about the 3-0 loss to LAFC to a minimum, though Tim Melia and the debut of Joaquin Fernandez got some time. Mostly, we focused on a few of the players who are out of contract after the 2024 season. First, Sheena's favorite, Remi Walter. He was a surprise addition to the starting lineup after Khiry Shelton was a late scratch with a calf injury. He pushed Jake Davis to right back and took his spot in the midfield before coming off in the 60th minute. Was it his final appearance? Then the attention turned to Johnny Russell. He wanted to score so bad, but it just wasn't coming off for him. He ended the night with just 0.1 xG (per FBref) of the teams meager 0.7 xG. In 31 minutes, Erik Thommy accounted for 0.4 of that total. But we're not talking about Thommy (this week). Russell stared off into the distance, taking it all in for a while, after the final whistle blew. It was the look of a man who knew it may be his final time in a Sporting KC uniform. For his part, he wants to come back, though apparently, it's not been discussed yet. Next week on the podcast, we'll look closer at the whole roster, and all 16 guys that could potentially be gone, and make our roster decisions. After the Sporting KC talk ended, things livened up with wins from the KC Current and SKC II. The Current pulled just one point out of second place in the NWSL standings with three games to go. Sporting KC II on the other hand were bounced from the playoffs despite their victorious efforts. Benny Feilhaber also confirmed he's out of contract after the season and he's "uncertain of his future." In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few topics, including: Women's College championship coming to CPKC Stadium Mary Long called up for US U-17 Women's World Cup Josh Wolff fired from Austin FC Gianluca Busio gets the call-up Inter Miami to the 2025 Club World Cup Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Sporting KC lose their final home game - 1:27 The Future of Remi and Johnny (and Fontas a little) - 11:06 Dany Rosero has surgery - 37:05 KC Current keep winning! - 48:26 SKC II and Benny Feilhaber Talk - 53:09 Digital Crawl - 1:00:10 Upcoming Schedule: USMNT vs. Panama - Saturday, October 12th @ 8:00PM CDT KC Current at Bay FC - Saturday, October 12th @ 9:00PM Sporting KC on the international break SKC II's season is over We recently turned on "Listener Support." Drew has returned from the Pacific Northwest and while he enjoyed much of his trip to Seattle, the soccer was not a reason why. Sporting KC came away with a pretty lackluster performance and a 2-0 defeat to the Sounders that honestly could have been even worse. The absence of Jake Davis was apparent pretty early in this match, as the Bassong/Walter double pivot struggled to contain the Sounders and often lost central control as has often been an issue with this team when Jake has not been in the midfield.Candidly it's been a bit difficult to find new and inviting topics to cover when it comes to this team as the negative results continue to pile up. I went crowd-sourcing on the Discord for ideas and it led me to dig into some historical data on this team and remember fondly of simpler times when Khiry Shelton playing CF was the only thing to really complain about. Finally, the Current look much better the 2nd time around vs Orlando, Joaquin Fernandez is finally in full training, and we preview 3 more matches coming up including a Cup Final.
S3E33 - For the Glory KC is back with the 98th episode of the show! (Our 100th episode is coming up, should we do something special?) Sporting Kansas City keep the momentum going with a huge semifinal win over Indy Eleven to book a place in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup finals against LAFC. They got there on goals by Johnny Russell and Dany Rosero. It wasn't always smooth sailing for Sporting KC though, as Indy Eleven gave them all they could handle in the second half, but Tim Melia repeatedly came up big to keep a clean sheet. The game also marked the return of Logan Ndenbe to the starting lineup and overall had a unique lineup that looked a lot more like 2023 than 2024 (with the exceptions of right back Khiry Shelton and midfielder Jake Davis). The game came to an end with an ultimately meaningless penalty kick that was missed by Alan Pulido. It made us wonder who should have taken the PK instead of Pulido based on who was on the field, as well as who would have gone if a game came to penalties. The KC Current continued to faulter as they lost their third straight NWSL game. This time it was the North Carolina Courage who got the better of them. It made us wonder if it's simply a slump, them running into tougher teams, or if they aren't as good as we thought they were. The team also made a series of transactions this week trading away Hanna Glas and Jordan Silkowitz while bringing in Kayla Sharples (formerly of Bay FC) and signing a few extensions. The NWSLPA also announced their list of free agents, which were loaded with KC players, including: Elizabeth Ball, Kristen Hamilton, Vanessa DiBernardo, AD Franch, Nichelle Prince, Almuth Schult, Desiree Scott and Mallory Weber. Who should Vlatko prioritize to keep? In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few topics, including: An update on Kayden Pierre's transfer Vermes hitting a milestone Stephen Afrifa getting a call-up from Canada SKC II finally winning and the USWNT U-20s start to the World Cup And there is no good way to talk about this, but a Sporting KC fan tragically lost her life as a result of injuries suffered in an auto accident outside the US Open Cup game on Tuesday night. S3E06 - For the Glory KC is back with the 71st episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City didn't have any huge news in the week, but there were a lot of little stories building towards the start of 2024. First, the roster seems set with the news that Kellyn Acosta would not be signing with Sporting KC and Peter Vermes confirming it's "highly unlikely" a Designated Player is signed before Week 1. Sheena and I share how we're feeling about the roster. Then we weigh in on Khiry Shelton's now serious injury and surgery, Daniel Salloi's injury situation and how preseason is going for Sporting KC and if it leaves us feeling optimistic or pessimistic. Plus, we have to talk about the possible advent of Blue Cards in soccer around the world. Blue cards -- they aren't just for indoor soccer anymore! IFAB is considering 10-minute "sin bin" penalties for dissent and cynical fouls that would leave a team down a man. Also, two blue cards equal a red, or a blue and a yellow equal a red (which is confusing because those are all primary colors). The KC Current don't get much love this week because I couldn't get to media day on super short notice. That said, Kristen Hamilton dropped some promising quotes in the KC Star, and we talk about the outlook for 2024. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on the following topics: Benny Feilhaber's near departure SKC II's schedule is out Still no firm US Open Cup plans for MLS The USYNT U-17 girls are going to the U-17 World Cup! Plus: Diego Rubio, new SKC announcers, former players on the move and the USL Super League Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times): The Super Bowl and Chad's "Super Bowl" - 1:38 No Acosta or any other DP - 9:19 Shelton injured - 22:25 SKC Preseason Win and Salloi Update - 25:04 Blue Cards? - 33:10 KC Current - 41:04 (NEW SEGMENT) Errors and Corrections - 44:24 Digital Crawl - 46:25 Spotify took away our ads, so we turned on "Listener Support." S03E05 - For the Glory KC is back with the 70th episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City had a relative active week, considering how slow the offseason has been. They played the final preseason game of leg one before coming to and from KC in the proceeding days. They'll be back in Miami by the time you read this. Outside of the preseason game itself, a 2-1 Nashville SC win, Peter Vermes gave updates on player performances, Khiry Shelton's injury and more. Then there were the transactions. Sporting KC made a trade that could open the door for a future move and added Memo Rodriguez as depth. I lay out my theory how the next few weeks and then summer transfer window may play out. My masterplan if you will (that's during segment two, timestamp below). Then we switched gears to talk about Sporting KC's youth development problem and its latest saga with Ramiz Hamouda leaving the SKC Academy without a contract and the team getting nothing for him. We also briefly talked Leagues Cup news too. The KC Current made a series of signings this week too (Mallory Weber, Regan Steigleder and Sophie Braun) as well as an extension for Lo LaBonta. Vlatko Andonovski also gave some training updates and let us know who is a full participant and who we'll still have to wait on. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on the following topics: KC gets six (!) World Cup games. Daniel Salloi is changing numbers again. Several former KC Current players are on the move. KU football at Children's Mercy Park. and Kelyn Rowe retires. S2E45 - For the Glory KC is back with the 52nd episode of the show! On this week's episode, Sporting Kansas City play twice and get two wildly different results. We spend way more time on the happier of the two results as Sporting KC stole all three points off the Houston Dynamo despite playing down a man. We give our thoughts and observations on the squad rotation, Johnny Russell's red card, Erik Thommy's hell of a night, Khiry Shelton's best game of the year and a bit of a stinker from my favorite, Nemanja Radoja. If you prefer your thoughts in video/Tweet form, I encourage you to check out this thread I did after the game if a podcast isn't your thing. It's got video and gifs of the red card, some questionable fouls and officiating and some downright scary plays. We can't avoid bringing the ugly Nashville SC game into it, although we keep that brief because to quote Sheena, she forgot about that game. The KC Current get the week off, so we instead do a mailbag of Sporting KC centered questions, including: How long is Pulido out and what does SKC do next weekend with Russell suspended? Sheena answers for her Tim Melia early season slander Is defense the problem or actually the offense? Is Vermes the man to lead (and build) this team into the future? The Digital Crawl does get some KC Current love as well as SKC II, the USWNT and USMNT and of course I annoy Sheena by updating her on Messi and briefly saying what's going on with him (he's hurt! -- probably). [Sorry for the delay getting the episode out. We recorded yesterday but my mic was all funky and it took a while to try to fix it.] Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Sporting KC battle Houston for all three points - 1:33 They also lost ugly to Nashville - 28:02 Mini-mailbag - 40:16 Digital Crawl - 54:38 Upcoming Games KC Current @ Washington Spirit - Sat. Sporting KC kept themselves in the MLS playoff race with a hard fought 2-1 win over the Houston Dynamo. Nobody was perfect, but everyone played a part in securing all three points while down a man. Jake Davis, Logan Ndenbe, & Tim Melia all came up big. Surprisingly, Khiry Shelton also put in a good shift in place of Daniel Salloi. Did Johnny Russell deserve a red card? Did Peter Vermes get a yellow card for showing emotion? SKC can beat anyone... but they can lose to anyone. This is an absolutely maddening team to follow and we never know which team will show up each game. However, this also means they could be a handful in the postseason. S2E37 - For the Glory KC is back with the 44th episode of the show. On this week's episode, Sporting Kansas City give us all a brief moment of hope before snatching it away from us. Sheena and I discuss the exciting Sporting KC versus FC Cincinnati game. If you were a neutral, perhaps a Liga MX/Chivas fan scouting these teams, would it have been obvious who was by far the best team in the league and who was on the outside of the playoffs looking in? Not for the first 15 minutes I'm sure, but then it got a little squirrely. We talk the Alan Pulido red card, the multitude of handballs and own goals, a little Khiry Shelton of course and what needs to happen next week. Then, a special guest joins me to talk about the KC Current after months of begging to be on the podcast. You tell me how it went as we break down the Houston Dash game before transitioning to talk about new Brazilian center back Lauren joining the team after the 2023 Women's World Cup. Speaking of the World Cup, we work in a little USWNT talk and of course Messi makes an appearance or two. This week Drew and Cody discuss the state of SKC structurally, whether the roster construction makes sense given the game model and tactical ideas, and air some grievances regarding all of these topics after the somewhat predictable reversion in results occurred over the past 3 games. Drew made the mistake of making an observation regarding the Khiry Shelton discourse on social media and somehow got drafted into being his greatest defender. We spend a little time talking about home vs. away tactical dynamics as well as setting up your progression shape to create rest defensive postures to eliminate your opponent's best players' capabilities. We briefly discuss the somewhat anticlimactic Gold Cup and also do a quick preview of the match against Vancouver that is most definitely in KC on Saturday, regardless of what Cody's brain convinced him of this week. We figure out what went wrong in Sporting KC's 1-0 loss to the Chicago Fire. KC has come back down to earth with a 1-2-2 record in the June. Dany Rosero's absence made a big impact in the physical battle on set pieces, as well as with our old friend Kei Kamara. Daniel Salloi has gone quiet the past couple games, and we need more from our star player. It's time to switch back to Pulskamp in goal. If he's the man for the future he needs the experience. There were some boo's heard on the broadcast when Khiry Shelton was subbed into the match. But are the fans angry at Khiry, or Peter Vermes? New reports out of Mexico (as always, remember that hefty grain of salt) that Alan Pulido will finish out his contract with SKC this MLS season. But time is running out before other clubs can sign a pre-contract. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

S2E32 - For the Glory KC is back with the 39th episode of the show! On this week's episode, Sporting Kansas City let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers to beat a depleted Los Angeles FC team at Children's Mercy Park. There is plenty of blame to go around, between the referees, Khiry Shelton, missed chances and ultimately Peter Vermes. Not sticking just to Kansas City soccer, we discuss the United States Men's National Team and their epic CONCACAF Nations League wins over the last week. First defeating Mexico 3-0 in a wild, at times horrifically handled, game. Then, with another shutout, but this time over Canada 2-0 to claim the trophy in a much more competitive game. Finally, the Kansas City Current gives us highs and lows from the week with a big 4-0 pounding of the Chicago Red Stars in the NWSL Challenge Cup before blowing a 2-0 lead against the USWNT filled Washington Spirit who come all the way back to win 2-3 in Debinha's World Cup sendoff game. I have to ask the question, is it time to blow it all up in the front office and coaching staff? Plus, a rumor came out (apparently via an agent, though the Tweets don't make that clear) that multiple KC Current players have asked for trades. Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Sporting KC collapse versus LAFC - 4:12 USMNT - Berhalter hired again - 34:39 And the US Stop Mexico - 40:14 The KC Current Win and Lose - 56:45 Digital Crawl - 1:04:56 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fortheglorykc/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fortheglorykc/support
Sporting KC fell 2-1 at the hands of the defending champs, LAFC, on Saturday night to end a four-game unbeaten run. We start off our conversation on the topic of diving and referees. Daniel Salloi was denied a penalty for staying on his feet. Are referees incentivizing players to dive? We look at the tactics, what went wrong, and Khiry Shelton at right back. Additionally, Erik Thommy was deployed on the wing for the first time in KC. The MLS standings are still looking much nicer for SKC, although they're back below the playoff line. We talk about the Los Angeles Galaxy game on Wednesday. And we also try to talk about the Current without talking about their most recent game. Learn more about your ad choices. Steeeve and Logan break down ANOTHER 0-0 draw for our KC Wiz in this week's episode. Steeeve mentions why he thinks its still a positive, despite not scoring, and Logan explains why Khiry Shelton is no longer eligible for NVP. We also break down the best of the rest from around the league, and, as always, give you our Good, Bad, and Ugly. *Side note* This was recorded Monday evening, and at the time Ben Sweat had not been released by the team. This happened on Tuesday. Which we literally said would happen in this episode. Dont forget to RATE us on Spotify, Apple, or Amazon!!!
The struggles continue as Sporting KC lost 2-1 against FC Dallas over the weekend. Daniel Salloi was able to get the first goal of the season for SKC, but even that silver lining needed a major deflection to find the back of the net. Erik Thommy and Willy Agada missed back-to-back penalties and the team as a whole failed to look dangerous all night. The players on the field are almost the same guys who were looking like one of the strongest teams in MLS to finish out last season. So what the heck happened? In the face of injuries, roster construction is a major question. But the players themselves have failed to step up. Daniel Salloi has yet to shine like the star player this club needs him to be. Agada is entirely snake bitten. Khiry Shelton is still playing because Tzionis has disappointed also. We do a lot of ranting and finger pointing, and now Brian Bliss has come into focus. We even try to blame Apple and MLS Season Pass for the terrible broadcast. With the current roster, Sporting KC fans shouldn't be expecting anything different. They simply need more firepower, which is still "coming soon". Will Alan Pulido and Gadi Kinda ever see the field again? Is Johnny Russell any closer to returning? This team has been 'close', and 'just misses', far too often. "We'd be great if not for X" has become the norm for Sporting KC. Always just on the verge. How long can this continue? Is the organization okay with mediocrity? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Reinforcements cannot come soon enough. Sporting KC got it's first point of the season with a draw in Colorado vs the Rapids, but they've yet to a score in the first two matches. Wasn't the offense supposed to be the part we didn't have to worry about? Marinos Tzionis got the start on the right wing over Khiry Shelton. It's not a great place to be right now in the absence of Johnny Russell. We have a tough conversation about who should be starting. After a stellar introduction to MLS last season, some of the shine has worn off striker Willy Agada in the first two matches. Is the team not giving him enough service... or is it self inflicted? We saw more shaky moments from Robert Voloder and Ben Sweat. John Pulskamp came up with some big saves, but we still aren't sure he's ready. But there are problems on all three lines. Without Kinda and Radoja, who is nowhere to be found, the midfield is in trouble. Felipe Hernandez & Cam Duke might have hit their ceilings. Learn more about your ad choices. Khiry's back. An aging lineup. Tons of questions about the backline. Sporting KC opens the MLS season with a shutout loss. It's time to panic, right? A quick glance at fan reactions across the internet seem to indicate a resounding yes. With injuries to the three best players on the team, Peter Vermes once again trotted out an aging lineup against the Portland Timbers in the 2023 season opener. Relying too much on Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza, and Ben Sweat is not something anybody wants to see this season. Khiry Shelton on the right wing was another one sure to have fans groaning. As new & returning players get to full fitness, what would you do with the Starting XI? We look at all options, including Marinos Tzionis, who turned in a solid shift off the bench. Many questions were answered... just not the way we wanted. Robert Voloder showed he still has kinks to work out. Ben Sweat is still Ben Sweat. A bright spot was Remi Walter. He was deployed in the holding midfield role and was probably the best player on the field for SKC. Erik Thommy, rocking the Captain's arm band, looked like he is ready to show us a new level to his game after an impressive first season. Is 1-0 away at Portland cause to panic? Reinforcements are coming and this lineup isn't exactly what we can expect all season. Next up is the Colorado Rapids, who will be missing the absolute pest of Diego Rubio. We're back! After a brief hiatus and 3 World Cup group stage games, we have returned to give our thoughts on the USMNT as they have advanced to the knockout rounds and have played perhaps their best soccer in the Berhalter era. The midfield trio of Adams, Musah and McKennie have been the talk of the tournament, and rightfully so. We discuss their performances and those of the team, as well as the structures Gregg Berhalter has employed and how they have worked, along with the execution of the team. There are some concerns relating to depth as well as Gregg's subsititution decisions(sound familiar?), and we get into it all. We also have a brief discussion on SKC's roster decisions that happened not long after the last pod and our thoughts(mainly how to get Khiry Shelton's agent to negotiate our personal employment). Reactions to Sporting KC's offseason roster moves. Khiry Shelton is signed for three years plus an option for a fourth. What would be the right price? Assessing what the team needs most after the announcements. There's a lot of eyes on the back line the next few months. Apple TV announced the rather high pricing format for the upcoming MLS season. How much effort & resources will Apple put into their new MLS property? Issues have already begun popping up in Qatar with journalists and restrictions on fans. And it's likely to only get worse. Sporting KC is still hot. Unfortunately, they're still eliminated from the post season. But playing spoiler for the Seattle Sounders instantly becomes a highlight of the season. SKC only suffered one loss since July 30th, a heartbreaker in Austin after conceding two very late goals. They would have a very real chance to sneak into the playoffs this weekend against FC Dallas had they held on to all three points that night. That loss clearly stands out as a defining moment this season. What other tough results hurt you the most this season? Peter Vermes seemingly confirmed the departure of Khiry Shelton with his recent comments about getting a third striker. He also mentioned the ability to get another Designated Player. Does this have anything to do with the report on the possibility of a 4th DP spot? The recently released Yates report painted a pretty ugly picture for the NWSL, including sexual misconduct among a slew of other troubling findings. Have teams acted quickly enough in response? The former club, FC Kansas City, is mentioned in the report. The differences between clubs then, and the KC Current now, is astounding. Learn more about your ad choices. This week on The Sporting Kansas City Show, presented by Michelob Ultra, Nate Bukaty, Jacob Peterson and Conall McCourt opened the show by discussing Sporting's recent form and previewing Sporting's upcoming game against the Seattle Sounders at Children's Mercy Park on Sunday, 10/2. The trio also discusses whether or not the 2022 MLS season would be considered a failure for the Sounders after winning the CCL earlier this year. Then, forward Khiry Shelton joined the show to talk about his Sporting Club Award for Humanitarian of the Year, the team finishing the season strong & more.
Even the most optimistic Sporting KC fans are having a hard time seeing a path to the MLS Cup Playoffs these days. But Lamar Hunt is giving Kansas City another chance at glory. Wednesday night's match against the Sacramento Republic FC is the biggest match of the season. The best attempts at ignoring the loss to LAFC went ignored. There was too much to talk about from Erik Thommy & William Agada making their debuts, to Khiry Shelton's worst performance ever. Everyone in the stadium can see he has zero confidence. What is your starting lineup for the US Open Cup Semifinal? Who starts at striker? Is it really possible Khiry starts up top again? The club's worst season in over a decade has brought out an ugly side to the fanbase. But is it different than other teams and other sports? Brian Bliss is technically the Sporting KC Technical Director. How does that differ from Peter Vermes' role and should more blame be directed towards Bliss for this season's failure? It's Shades of Blue AFTER DARK! We recorded in the wee hours of the morning, fresh off a thrilling 4-2 extra time win for Sporting KC over FC Dallas in the US Open Cup. And to think... you almost forgot how much fun it is to watch SKC! The Starting XI turned some heads and one player's name was literally hand-written on the official scoresheet. Several youngsters were given their shot to make an impact. Who did? Kayden Pierre had a big opportunity to slide into the regular first team lineup. Jake Davis wasted zero time in proving he's a young Roger Espinoza by immediately getting a yellow card. Peter Vermes admitted the miserable 2-0 deficit at the half was his fault. Even though Ben Sweat straight up forgot he was playing soccer at one point. But whatever he did at halftime - it worked. This game had everything. Including a Khiry Shelton brace (kind of). Power Rankings for the best calves on the team. The two newcomers scored their first goals for Sporting. Vujnovic redeemed an otherwise quiet performance with the first goal. While Tzionis was a bright spot all night before he took the roof off the house with a 98th minute equalizer, the latest regulation time goal in club history. We take you behind the scenes of a Sporting KC press conference. Does the team hate Chad? Cody gets grilled on his knowledge (or lack thereof ) of the Kansas City Current and Sporting KC II. Sporting KC earned a 2-2 draw against the always tough FC Dallas over the weekend after goals from Johnny Russell & Daniel Salloi. Are things starting to trend in the right direction for SKC? With the recent news of Gadi Kinda's season ending surgery and the closing of the transfer window, Peter Vermes will have to make due with his current roster. However, this last match gave us signs of hope. Cody & Thad recently spoke with Salloi about his expertise in getting fouled, compared to his teammate Khiry Shelton. This skill paid off with Daniel earning a questionable penalty kick which led to the opening goal vs Dallas. Pen or no pen.. what say you? Nikola Vujnovic hasn't featured in the last two matches, and he's only seen the pitch for a few minutes in his last several appearances. He's a different player than Shelton, and Peter Vermes doesn't like to disrupt the flow of a match. Or is he perhaps in the dog house? Kortne Ford turned in another solid performance. We analyze the entire backline, including Cam Duke who replaced Graham Zusi in the first half. Johnny Russell makes peace with the Fountain City Ultras. Learn more about your ad choices. Sporting KC has fallen to 12th place in the West, and 26th overall, after another disappointing result against the Columbus Crew. Which line are we upset with this week? Khiry Shelton got the start again and played the full 90 minutes, With Nikola Vujnovic waiting behind him, how long his Khiry's leash? Daniel Salloi has gone cold again. The show wants to see more Marinos Tzionis, but disagrees on where he can be used best. Peter Vermes made changes on the backline and he was rewarded with a shutout by centerbacks Kortne Ford & Robert Voloder. Will we see the same four against FC Dallas? The show takes turn picking a change to lineup to deploy this weekend. Notable friend of the pod Jacob Peterson is also an admirer of Logan Ndenbe. And his calves. Learn more about your ad choices. His dog might look like a super villain, but Daniel Salloi assures us he is in no immediate danger. Which is good, because right now Sporting KC needs all the firepower on the front line it can possibly get. DS20 loves Kansas City and the fans love him right back. But the homegrown Hungarian's contract is up at the end of this season. Will he re-sign with SKC? Will a European club pluck him away from us? Cody & Thad test his preparedness for a line of questioning he's sure to get all season. We talked about the current state of the team and what he believes are the problems holding them back. We ask him about Khiry Shelton's social media post calling out MLS referees and the quality of refereeing league wide. Daniel also helps us to understand the nuances in the art of getting fouled. After a big soccer weekend, especially for the US Men's National Team, we called in Nate Bukaty to help us cover all the action. As a staunch Kansas Citian and the Sporting KC TV Commentator, Nate has a passionate, unique point of view. He says we're in the midst of "the most important 5-year window in the history of American soccer". Not only does this team have a much higher level of talent than generations' past, but they've also regained the "attitude" which historically defined them. It's a dangerous combination. Nate goes Freudian on the toxicity within the US Soccer community online. Cody wants to fight them on Twitter (@thatcodytho). SKC got the win over Real Salt Lake after the Curious Case of Khiry Shelton made an appearance. How does this keep working with a striker who is indifferent about scoring? Now that Nate is on TBT airwaves, free of the shackles of his Sporting KC bosses, what goods can we get him to spill? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Was the match in Chicago terrible.. or just bad? The midfield is starting to become a real worry. Roger Espinoza wasn't supposed to be playing this much. Remi Walter is inconsistent. Will Cam Duke & Felipe Hernandez take that next step? Nikola Vujnovic hasn't had much of an impact on the attack in his first two games.. Do you miss Khiry Shelton yet? We give an update on the injury status for several players as Sporting KC prepares to face Real Salt Lake this weekend. Who, by the way, are somehow at the top of the Western Conference. Thanks for listening! Please subscribe, rate, & review. Or yell at us on Twitter. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
To clarify... both the team AND this show are a tad askew. The Sporting KC attack isn't exactly firing on all cylinders. Khiry Shelton disappeared at times, but we still don't hate him with the fiery passion that some of you do. Remember, there's still a striker on the way, and 20-year-old Marinos Tzionis has looked formidable in two brief appearances. With two starters sidelined at the moment, the midfield has been a bit scrambled as well. Is Felipe Hernandez ready to take the next step in his MLS career? Remi Walter scored after doing an interview on Shades of Blue. This week's stat from Mike Kuhn is quite depressing in regards to SKC and their recent trips to play the Colorado Rapids. David has words for Diego Rubio. If Thad were a tree, he would live in a forest. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Three straight losses to close out the season. Colorado Rapids took first place. What the heck happened? We speculate wildly! But a main topic of discussion is none other than a blatant missed handball, which may very well have propelled Sporting KC to a first-round bye. We were treated to an epic Peter Vermes rant after the match, and every ounce of his frustration is deserved. But it's not all self loathing! The gang talks about the final three matches, a lack of creativity (and Johnny Russell), and the impact of a drop in form out of Khiry Shelton. Cody forgot to plug in his mic. Sporting KC missed a huge opportunity over the weekend to gain ground on the Seattle Sounders ahead of another faceoff with the Western Conference leaders. There are a lot of questions about the defense, but is there something missing in the midfield as well? Khiry Shelton shares his journey into becoming a Professional Soccer player. Growing up as an "Army Brat" he and his family moved around all over the US. Although his scenery changed often, his love for the sport of soccer grew into an obsession no matter where he was living. Khiry explains how his mother and father instilled a competitive nature within him through virtually every aspect in his upbringing, how he manifested his dream to become a Professional Soccer Star and the dark times that brought on his appreciation for the positive experiences in overcoming his life's challenges.
Daniel Sperry joins Cody & Thad to be very mature and professional about Sporting Kansas City's last two incredibly frustrating matches. Now is not the time to focus on poor referring, bad luck, and Graham Zusi's season ending surgery. Nor how it felt like getting punched in the face. Nor where SKC could be in the Western Conference standings right now. We would never. In stead, we look ahead to the Colorado Rapids match at 7:30pm on Saturday night at Children's Mercy Park. Alan Pulido is back which means someone has to be the odd man out. Can you keep Gianluca Busio out of the lineup? Where does he play? Is Roger Espinoza best used off the bench.. or perhaps as an outside back? Gerso Fernandes has been creating chances like crazy. And don't forget about Khiry Shelton! Who do you sit? Ask and you shall receive! Aly Trost (now) from 810 Sports Radio joins us for an episode to reunite the original Shades of Blue crew! It strangely doesn't seem like much has changed as the conversations were quite similar to a couple years ago. Who should play winger? Why do they keep dominating games without getting the win? What is Khiry Shelton's best position? Sporting Kansas City has VERY rough stretch coming up with NINE games over a 30 day period. Squad rotation seems like a must, but Peter Vermes. The trio talks about Sporting Kansas City's first win of 2020 including great showings from Luis Martins, Gadi Kinda, & Alan Pulido. Peter Vermes deployed Khiry Shelton on the right wing, pushing Johnny Russell to the left. While Russell may have been hard to notice at times, it sounds like this was a tactical choice for the specific matchup with the Houston Dynamo. You may see Johnny on the right very soon. Hi everyone and welcome to the New York City Football Club Fan Podcast. Who am I? Well I'm your host, Andrés Emilio Soto, a real estate agent in NYC and a season ticket holder who sits in Section 205, so come say hi! This podcast is by fans and for fans. I want you to voice your opinion, give feedback, provide your thoughts about NYCFC and to have fun while doing this. To leave a message visit NYCFCPodcast.com/talk. Now on to today's show. Recap Corner Boy do I hate being right in this scenario. In front of a sold out crowd of 27,545 fans NYCFC came up a goal short in their one zero loss to Sporting Kansas City. New York City Football Club's first loss of the season now drops them down to 3rd place in the Eastern Conference, tied with Orlando City SC at 5 points. NYCFC was without forward David Villa, midfielder Sebastian Velasquez and defender Josh Williams due to injury. Furthermore forwards Khiry Shelton and Adam Nemec were unavailable due to international call ups. The lone goal came from a thrown in by Sporting KC's Captain, Matt Besler, which was targeted for the head of the rushing Ike Opara's head who struck the ball like lightning. This time around Josh Saunders was not able to make a save. From my point of view it seemed like Sporting Kansas City's strategy in the first half was to stuff NYCFC on their half of the field basically using the smaller Yankee Stadium field as a disadvantage. Every time NYCFC had the ball it appeared they could not get out of the half line mark. The Club either lobbed the ball too far, made erroneous passes or lost control of the ball. It wasn't until late in the first half that NYCFC started to find some open space and they played a much better and fluid game in the second half yet missed key shots on goal. Next up for NYCFC is an away Match against the Philadelphia Union on April 11th. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTteLtc3Njc Analysis Corner Matt Reed appears on the show and we discuss the following: Recap/ Analysis of the game against Sporting Kansas City How our team adapted to not have key starters such as David Villa. Now on to today's show Season 1 Episode 3. Recap Corner Well as you can hear the common denominator in those last files is Josh Saunders. If anything NYCFC's 1-0-2 record is thanks to Saunders' great goal keeping. Simply put, he saved us from losing this game against Colorado. NYCFC did not look good. There were only two shots on goal against Colorado and Saunders 7 saves were a season high for him. Yet our 5 points is what matters at the end of the day. Getting a tie on a road game is much better than a loss. NYCFC was down to 10 men after defender Shay Facey made his first start and got two yellows, the second coming on the 82nd minute for a tackle on Juan Ramirez just outside of the penalty box. Next up for NYCFC they face off against 2013 MLS Champions Sporting Kansas City. Fan Message Corner I am so excited to have Matt Reed join us on the podcast. Matt is the founder of MetroSoccerNation.com. I highly suggest you visit the website and read up on the recent articles. The latest post is about the competition at the forward position between Adam Nemec & Khiry Shelton. You can email Matt at mattreed415@yahoo.com follow MetroSoccerNation on Twitter @Metro_Nation_NY or simply subscribe to the website. I hope you enjoy the interview with Matt where we go through many questions, but here are just a few: Who are you and what do you do? What other leagues & teams do you follow? World cup is here. Who do you root for? What are you excited about with NYCFC? What are you worried about? If you had complete ownership of the team, what changes would you make? Analysis Corner Matt yet again provides great analysis about the game against Colorado Rapids gives his opinion about our next game against Sporting Kansas City and gives us a sneak peak on what MetroSoccerNation.com is working on.
