Sporting KC finally returned to the friendly confines of Children's Mercy Park on Saturday Night, but were unable to give the fans a victory as they fell to FC Dallas 4-2.  SKC was able to take the early lead again in this one off of a pretty curling shot from the top of the box by Shapi Suleymanov, but in a familiar refrain the team was unable to maintain their defensive posture in central midfield, and FC Dallas used it to pull them out of shape prior to a nice crossed ball from Shaq Moore onto the foot of Petar Musa equalized. Then things got a bit weird, as the referee made a couple tight calls against Sporting KC leading to a penalty for Lucho Acosta, and an early trip to the showers for Khiry Shelton as Sporting had to play down a man for the last half hour plus stoppage time while already down 2-1 on the score sheet.  I think it is fair to credit SKC with the fact that they did still try pretty aggressively to attack Dallas' goal even with the man disadvantage, but that led to two more fairly simple finishes for Bernard Kamungo and Lucho Acosta, meaning that outside of a late consolation goal from Santi Munoz, that SKC would be heading into this 10 day break having two straight losses after having seeming to have somewhat righted the ship prior to that..The USMNT drama continued last week with Christian Pulisic and Mauricio Pochettino trading public barbs, before they thoroughly dismantled a Trinidad and Tobago team that seemed mostly disinterested in even attempting to play in their Gold Cup opener.  That wasn't the only fun performance this weekend though, as the Kansas City Current continued their dominance at the top of the league while still missing several key players.  They did let Louisville back into this one late but then Temwa did what Temwa does and iced it after a nice ball from Claire Hutton sent her running down the flank and Temwa did the rest.

Annie & André review w frustrating 0-2 loss to Kansas City Current in the Spirit's home opener. It wasn't all bad, though. Washington showed off a new formation, and crisper buildup in possession. They also managed to contain Temwa Chawinga for 95'ish minutes. But an unfortunate handball call, and a couple Spirit opportunities to equalize allowed the Current to take and maintain a 1-0 lead. So, unfortunately, we have to talk about refereeing. After, we spotlight key performances, including being grateful for Rebeca Bernal, and a potential Gift for the Spirits.Thank you for listening, please subscribe, rate, and review. Morning Espresso, 3.14: Messi scores in Jamaica, NWSL season kicks off tonight

Soccer Down Here

Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.Lionel Messi came off the bench last night in Kingston to help Inter Miami advance in the Concacaf Champions Cup, defeating Cavalier FC 2-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate. He scored late to seal the match after Luis Suarez converted from the penalty spot in the first half. Miami will face LAFC in the quarterfinals of the competition. Club America will battle Cruz Azul 3 times in 12 days in April as they'll meet in an all-Liga MX quarterfinal. Vancouver will play Pumas and the LA Galaxy will play Tigres. New season for the NWSL kicks off tonight as they continue their growth that has been remarkable over the past 5 years. My questions going into the 2025 season are:  can Orlando win another trophy with Marta & Barbra Banda leading the attack, is Washington the most fun team in the league to watch when Croix Bethune & Trinity Rodman get healthy, can the reigning MVP Temwa Chawinga lead the Kansas City Current to a trophy this season, and can Ally Sentnor continue her scintillating form from the USWNT into the league season?UEFA released frame-by-frame photos of Julian Alvarez's penalty double touch that showed "minimal" (the air quotes are important here) contact with his plant foot. I disagree with the conversation about allowing an accidental double touch to stand, just allow the attempt to be retaken, the same as when goalkeepers come off their line early. US Men's Beach Soccer National team reached the semifinals of the Concacaf Championship, they'll face El Salvador with a spot at the World Cup on the line. 3 big games this weekend for you to keep an eye on:  Atleti hosts Barcelona with one point separating them in La Liga on Sunday, the Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Newcastle on Sunday, and Saturday's Women's League Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester City. Refresh your latest content from the SDH Network and our friends at 92.9 The Game on the Off The Woodwork podcast. Some great pieces of audio that you might have missed over the last few days.

Pro Soccer Player Carly Nelson On Saving Yourself Over Saving a Goal

The Mindset Experience

Like so many elite athletes, Carly Nelson grew up playing multiple different sports and was attracted to soccer because she could run around with her friends and kick a ball. She was both a field player and a goalie until a pivotal moment at age 15. During a typical game while playing goalie, she saved a great shot and experienced feelings of excitement, euphoria, validation, appreciation and ultimate confidence realizing, “I can do this!” Despite this life changing moment, she was talented enough in college that she didn't fully understand the work ethic required to be great. That was until she sustained a severe concussion and learned that her sport could be taken away from her at any moment. She also learned the critical values of self-talk, discipline, and effort through the unlikeliest of circumstances. After 4 years at the University of Utah,  achieved her goal of becoming a professional athlete where she has played for the last 5 years for the Seattle Reign, Kansas City Current, Orlando Pride, Utah Royals FC. Carly explains however that while many consider professional sports a dream, it's really a job and it began to take away the joy, excitement, and validation she once felt. As hard as it was to get into pro sports, she made an even harder choice to step away. By taking care of her own health and wellness and appreciating herself, she is highlighting that if we want people to show up for us, we need to show up for ourselves. Showing up for ourselves might include walking away from something we love. @carly_nelson
