Today's episode of Something To Talk About is released on the eve of Mother's Day – an occasion that for some, is a day of celebration, yet for others is a reminder of grief and isolation. Media personality, author and youth worker Brooke Blurton is one who approaches Mother's Day with conflicted emotions, having lost her mother when she was just 11. Joining host Sarrah Le Marquand for this special episode, Brooke reflects on grief; celebrating the legacies of her mother and her grandmother; taking on the role of matriarch within her family - and how seeing her mum's life cut short at only 34 has instilled a sense of urgency in her to experience and achieve as much as she can. She also reveals the family tradition that will see Brooke honour her mother's memory in a very beautiful way if she has a daughter of her own one day… Brooke Blurton co-hosts First Things First alongside Matty Mills, which you can listen to here. You can also find more from her via @brooke.blurton on Instagram. You can listen to Brooke's previous episode of Something To Talk About here. After our podcast episode dropped this morning, we were invited onto Melbourne's number 1 breakfast radio show - Fifi Fev and Nick on Fox FM - to discuss the topic of homophobia in the AFL. As you may have heard in our last ep, Scott revealed he was in a relationship for 3-4 years with a player who still remains in the closet, so how did former AFL player Fev react to the idea that there are men in the sport who are too afraid to come out? And does he think the AFL are supportive enough to these individuals? While Something To Talk About takes a break, we are revisiting some of the most emotional and revealing moments from the almost 50 guests who have joined us in conversation on this podcast over the past year. The complex issue of becoming a parent, or the conscious decision not to, is at the heart of today's episode. We begin by revisiting our powerful conversation with influencer and cult brand co-founder Sarah Davidson, who shared her experience of pregnancy loss with Something To Talk About to break the taboo around speaking publicly about miscarriage - especially given Sarah found it impossible to find stories of other women who had experienced pregnancy loss but were yet to conceive again. After opening up about her heartache and grief after miscarrying last year when she and her husband Nick decided to start trying for a baby, Sarah and Nick have since shared a happy update with her followers - they are expecting a baby boy later this year. This issue was also at the centre of my interview with British author and podcaster Elizabeth Day, who spoke with such candour that she moved many listeners to tears when detailing the anger, the grief - and ultimately, the acceptance - that she experienced when coming to terms with this chapter of her life. Having famously coined the term ‘fertility privilege', Elizabeth had many thought-provoking observations as to what we should and shouldn't share on social media when navigating baby news. And how can we support the people in our lives who have had that choice taken away from them? With these conversations being brought to the fore more than ever before; as Michelle Andrews of the Shameless Media empire told Something To Talk About, the decisions regarding if and when to have children is her ‘Roman Empire'. At 29, Michelle explained how the dialogue around babies, pregnancy and pregnancy loss is not only the issue keeping her up at night, but occupying the minds of many of her generation. And what of those who have decided to be childfree, and yet are forced to contend with the judgement and unsolicited questions from others over that decision? Maria Thattil is one such woman, and as she told this podcast, the choice to raise a child shouldn't be made to fix something in your life or appease the people around you. But for those who are equally certain they do want to have children, radio presenter Fifi Box has demonstrated that there are many different ways to create a family. As a single mother to two beautiful daughters, the youngest of whom was conceived via IVF, Fifi was incredibly generous in talking Something To Talk About's listeners through the highs and lows of that process. A warning that today's episode touches on subject matter that could be triggering for some listeners. For support or information about pregnancy loss, visit miscarriageaustralia.com.au Hear the full conversation with each of the guests featured in this episode here: Listen to Sarah Davidson here. Welcome to the #SPAITGIRL Talk Show with Yvette Le Blowitz EP.80 - Balance & other B.S with Felicity Harley Felicity Harley has been a journalist for Australia's leading women's publications for two decades, including a nine-year stint as founding editor of Women's Health. Author of Balance & other B.S. She launched and is currently editor-at-large of whimn.com.au. She has appeared weekly on Sunrise for ten years, has hosted TV shows and events and is a speaker on her favourite topic: health and wellbeing. Felicity was named one of Australia's 100 Women of Influence for her brainchild the 'I Support Women In Sport' campaign. She lives in Sydney with her husband, Tom, and their greatest achievements, three children. In her, er, spare time, the health aficionado drinks coffee, does yoga, exercises (to stay sane) and cheers on the Sydney Swans. When Felicity Harley, founding editor of Women's Health magazine and whimn.com.au, felt really out of kilter, she started talking to other women about their overwhelm. The floodgates opened. Turns out her girlfriends, colleagues and other mums at the school gate had also been drowning in feminist guilt while trying to keep everything afloat, plagued by perfectionism, riddled with doubt, ruled by screens and hurtling towards burnout. As we juggle the roles of partner, boss, friend, mother and employee (plus a side hustle), balance has never been more crucial. We're obsessed with 'wellness', yet women's mental health and wellbeing are in decline. From the '15 Days of Fame' radio competition to Fifi & Jules to the forefront of influencer marketing, Jules Lund is a game changer. His television career began in 2004 on Getaway, and he appeared in almost 400 episodes during his time with Channel Nine. He moved to radio in 2007. Along with Ryan Shelton and Tamsyn Lewis, he presented Summer Fling, a breakfast show on the Austereo Today Network. From 2011, he co-hosted Fifi & Jules during Drive with Fifi Box on the Today Network (leaving Friday's show open for Hamish Blake and Andy Lee to get their start in radio). In 2014 her co-hosted (with Merrick Watts and Sophie Monk) Jules, Merrick & and Sophie during breakfast on 2Day FM, until the show was replaced by The Dan & Maz Show (with Maz Compton). Jules then joined Emma Freedman to host The Scoopla Show, an entertainment news segment on the HIT Network between 2015 and 2016. Jules left radio in September 2015 to launch TRIBE, a marketplace for social influencers and the brands that need them. Game Changers: Radio is a show dedicated to the radio industry. Paul Murray is the host of Paul Murray Live and Saturday Edition on Sky News Australia. Paul was ‘discovered' hosting a Little Athletics carnival when he was still a teenager, which led to him hosting a national show on Triple J at the ripe old age of 14. He then moved to the NOVA Newsroom where he won a Brian White Memorial Award despite never having studied journalism. Paul shifted to breakfast radio at Triple M Sydney as a part of The Shebang with Marty Sheargold and Fifi Box before moving to nights where he hosted The Paul Murray Show which eventually became the drive show we did together, Paul & Rach. Paul left FM radio to pursue a career in talkback, hosting his own show at 2UE and he's now at the helm of the highest rating show on Sky News, Paul Murray Live. In this episode Paul Murray talks about why he was drawn to talkback radio as a kid, why making the move to AM wasn't everything he'd dreamed it would be and why failing your HSC isn't the end of the world. Fifi Box got her first break on the national stage as co-host of MMM's Shebang with Marty Sheargold and Byron Cooke. The show reached #1 around Australia in 2004. Her on-air chemistry with Marty is still recognised as one of the most potent combinations on FM. Fifi moved to the Today Network in 2008, hosting a national weekend breakfast show before taking on national drive with Jules Lund in 2011. The show became one of the first truly social, multi-platform shows on radio. Fifi now hosts Fifi, Fev and Byron on Fox in Melbourne. 'I just realised I’ve got to give this everything... You've got nothing to lose… I will give you everything I’ve got, because I know what it’s like to fold people’s clothing and do their ironing, and I didn’t love that.' Marty Sheargold is the only FM broadcaster to have been #1 in drive on two different networks. He co-hosted the Shebang on MMM with Fifi Box, and his Nova drive show Kate, Tim and Marty is currently the most listened to metro drive show on FM. Marty's laconic style and dry as sandpaper sense of humour has made him one of the industry’s favourite presenters. He is at a point in his career where he is beginning to ask himself 'what comes next?'. 'I feel like this will be my last job... I'm at an age now where I'm not going to springboard in to another successful career. The TODAY Show is not going to suddenly ring me and say 'Karl Stefanovic's winding it up Bro'. I'm not that guy'.
