Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened down 45-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 21,492 on turnover of $2.9-billion N-T. Taiwan-China interactions continue despite stalled talks: MAC head Mainland Affairs Council head Chiu Chui-cheng says Taiwan and China still maintain some level of interaction, even though official dialogue has stalled. In an interview,Chiu said interactions with China are being carried out in line with the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area. Chiu acknowledged that maintaining "normal dialogue" is currently difficult because Taiwan will never accept China's demand to treat the "1992 Consensus," based on the "One China principle," as a precondition (前提). Nevertheless, Chiu said some interaction continues between the MAC and China's Taiwan Affairs Office, as well as between the semi-official SEF and its Chinese counterpart, the Beijing-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits. Chiu also says individuals across the Strait, including Taiwanese businesspeople, scholars and journalists, frequently travel between the two sides and share information. World Masters Games' closing ceremony The closing ceremony of the 2025 World Masters Games will take place on the evening of May 30 at the New Taipei City Art Museum, featuring a star-studded lineup and spectacular visuals. And a 4.5-minute fireworks display will also light up the night sky, with popular band Energy headlining the event with a 20-minute finale performance. EU Trade Negotiator on US Talks A European Union official says he has had good trade talks with the Trump administration. AP correspondent Mike Hempen reports Amnesty Accuses M23 Rebels of War Crimes Human rights group Amnesty International accused the M23 rebels in eastern Congo of killing, torturing and forcibly disappearing civilian detainees in two rebel-controlled cities. Amnesty says “these acts violate (違反) international humanitarian law and may amount to war crimes.” The decades-long conflict in eastern Congo escalated in January. The Rwanda-backed M23 advanced and seized the strategic city of Goma in North Kivu province followed by Bukavu in February. Amnesty said that between February and April it interviewed 18 civilians who had been unlawfully detained by M23. They reported suffering brutal beatings and harsh detention conditions while their relatives were denied access to the detention sites. Canada King Charles Visit Britain's King Charles III has arrived in Ottawa on a visit that Canada's leader says will underscore (強調) his nation's sovereignty. Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/medchat74 Target Audience This activity is targeted toward primary care physicians and advanced providers. Statement of Need With the 2023 DEA regulation changes, physicians can now treat patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) without requiring an X waiver. As the demand for treatment providers rises, primary care providers are pivotal in addressing this gap by initiating OUD treatments. Given that primary care often serves as the first point of contact within the healthcare system, it's crucial for providers to identify patients who could benefit from OUD treatment. However, many providers fail to recognize these patients and may refer them elsewhere, missing opportunities for immediate care. Objectives Describe screening guidelines and key diagnostic criteria for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) Discuss effective medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder (MOUD). Review treatment strategies for MOUD treatment including guidelines for detox in the primary care setting. ModeratorJames T. AIT says Chinese Activity Not Response to Lai's US Stopovers The American Institute in Taiwan says it doesn't believe increased Chinese military activity near Taiwan this week was a response to President Lai Ching-te's recent stopovers in the United States. The institute believes the "elevated activity in the East China Sea and South China Sea follows a broader increase in China's military posture (姿態) and military exercises over the last several years .. .. and it does not see this wider activity as a response to Lai's transit (轉機)." An A-I-T spokesperson says the United States continues to call on Beijing to "avoid any destabilizing or escalatory actions (升級動作) that might undermine regional peace and stability… and will continue coordinating with allies and partners regarding our shared concerns." The statement was issued by A-I-T following China's designating of seven areas east of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces from Monday to Wednesday as "temporary reserved areas" of airspace (空域保留區). Government Seeking Private Investment in Public Infrastructure The National Development Council says it's seeking private investment in public infrastructure (基礎建設) projects. According to the N-D-C's Economic Development Department, the government is set to create a ministerial-level mechanism (機制) to encourage such investment in order to "boost cooperation between the government and the private sector in jointly building Taiwan." Department head Chiu Chiu-ying says the mechanism will bring together officials from the N-D-C, the Ministry of Finance and the Financial Supervisory Commission to work with private enterprises … .. who are interested in investing in "major public infrastructure projects" projected to "yield stable returns." Chiu also says it's hoped that bringing in private capital (私人資金) for public projects will help alleviate financial burdens on both central and local governments. Lows of 11°C Forecast for North and Center The Central Weather Administration says a continental cold air mass is forecast to bring temperatures in the north and center down to 11 degrees early Sunday morning. According to the administration's forecast center, cold air mass will affect Taiwan from tomorrow through Sunday. Local media reports say Han Dong-hoon now says removing Yoon is the only viable option left to restore politicial stability (恢復穩定政治). On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with David Chiu, communication manager at The Braid and producer of their new video series, “Tastes of Tradition.” “One thing that we at The Braid notice is that food and storytelling, especially for us Jews, are inseparable,” Chiu explains. “Food is as much about the people you're sharing it with as the recipes themselves.” In their snackable videos (they are about two-and-a-half minutes each), “Tastes of Tradition” invites the audience into the kitchens of five diverse Jewish families. Featured in the series are Instagram chef Sivan Kobi (Sivan's Kitchen) and her Iraqi Jewish mother, Yafa, who prepare kitchri, and Chinese-American celebrity chef and cookbook author Katie Chin and her teenage daughter Becca, an Asian American Jew, who make latkes with Asian-inspired dipping sauces. Also, graphic novelist Emily Bowen Cohen, a Muscogee (Creek) Nation member, joins her son Maccabee and mother-in-law Beth to make fry bread for Hanukkah; award-winning comic and educator Joshua Silverstein, who is black and Jewish, and his 16-year-old stepson, Ami, make allergy-friendly hamantaschen for Purim; and Kimberly Dueñas, co-founder of Jewtina y Co, and her father Solomon, a crypto-Jew from El Salvador who kept his Jewish identity hidden for years due to the legacy of the Spanish Inquisition, prepare challah. The series is on brand for The Braid, a vibrant cultural hub for connection, creativity, and stories that reflects the diversity of the Jewish experience. And food is frequently part of the mix. “To me, the most powerful thing about food is that it's passed down,” Chiu explains. “Even if you don't pass down Shabbat traditions or other religious things, there's something that you take from your family related to food.” Chiu, who is a Chinese American Jew, says he finds that also true on the Chinese side of his family. When he went off to college, Chiu wrote to his dad, asking him how to cook. “He sent me all these recipes, which was hard for him because he's an immigrant and he never wrote anything down,” Chiu explains. “But his recipes became my way of connecting with him and his culture.” David Chiu shares the origin story of “Tastes of Tradition,” the different ways The Braid integrates food into their offerings, and how he developed his love of cooking. He also shares Katie Chin's recipe for double happiness latkes with Asian dipping sauces, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. In Part 2, we pick up where we left off in Part 1. Aaron talks about volunteering at a nonprofit in The City called the Trust for Public Land, where he learned about land acquisition for parks and open spaces. Through that gig, he got a paid internship and eventually, a job. In fact, he met Nancy, the woman he would later marry, there. He eventually moved into Nancy's apartment in North Beach, his first apartment in SF. The move came shortly after the couple visited Nepal to climb in the Himalayas. It was October 1989, when the Loma Prieta earthquake happened. We fast-forward to 2000, the year I moved to San Francisco. I set the stage for my first brush with Aaron at this point in the recording. My first apartment was on California Street near Larkin. The cable car runs on that block. One day, still very new in The City, I spotted a politician on a cable car campaigning. Back then, I had no idea what the Board of Supervisors was. But lo and behold, it was Aaron Peskin, campaigning for his first term on the Board. Aaron then tells the story from his point of view, backing up just a few years. In his time at the Trust for Public Land, he worked with elected officials often. He learned his way around Sacramento and DC. But more pertinent to this story, Aaron also worked with a North Beach tree-planting organization—Friends of the Urban Forest, in fact—and the Telegraph Hill Dwellers to be specific. The work involved getting volunteers together, convincing folks who'd lived in the neighborhood for decades to plant trees on the sidewalks in front of their houses. It was the late-Nineties. The first dotcom boom was still happening. Willie Brown was at the height of his mayoral power. Chain stores were trying their hardest to move into North Beach. Aaron remembered that he knew the mayor from his work with the trust, and got a meeting with Brown. He brought several disparate groups together with the mayor. Brown told Peskin, "If you don't like the way I run this town, why don't you run for office?" From that dismissive comment, Aaron got involved in the upstart mayor campaign, in 1999, of Supervisor Tom Ammiano. Through this, he met many folks from many grassroots and neighborhood organizations. Ammiano, a write-in candidate, forced a December runoff, which he lost to Willie Brown. But the experience transformed Aaron Peskin. Ammiano urged Aaron to run for the DCCC shortly after the election. Looking over what he'd already accomplished, he ran and got a seat on the committee. It was March 2000. That fall would see the resumption of supervisor district elections, vs. at-large contests where the top-11 vote-getters won seats on the Board that had been in place since 1980. Again, Ammiano nudged Aaron to run for the newly created District 3 supervisor seat. He thought, Why not try once? He won the seat. Aaron credits campaign volunteers with earning that victory. He ended up serving two four-year terms as the D3 supervisor. We fast-forward a bit through those eight years. Highlights include Matt Gonzalez's run for mayor in 2003, Aaron's dive into areas of public policy he had been uneducated on prior to his time in office, and bringing people together to get stuff done. I ask Aaron if it's all ever overwhelming. He says yes, and rattles off the various ways—hiking, canoeing, yoga— he deals with that. We talk about his addiction to alcohol as well, something he's kicked for the last three years. Aaron was termed out in 2008, and says he saw it as the end of a chapter of his life. He ran for the DCCC again, where he won a seat and was the chair of that group from 2008–2012. He helped get out the vote for Barack Obama in 2008, working to send volunteers to Nevada. After 2012, he figured he was totally finished with politics. He went back to the Trust for Public Land. But then a funny thing happened. Aaron's chosen successor for D3 supervisor, David Chiu, won the seat and took over after Aaron was termed out in 2008. Then, in 2014, Chiu ran for an California Assembly seat and won. Then-Mayor Ed Lee appointed Julie Christensen. A special election in late-2015 saw Peskin run against Christensen, mostly at the urging of Rose Pak. He won that election, as well as the "normal" district election the following year. By the end of this year, he'll be termed out again. Highlights of Aaron's second stint on the Board of Supervisors, for him, include: He's become the senior member of the Board, having served with 42 different other members. He's also come to relish the role of mentor for new supervisors. He goes over a litany of other legislation he's either written or helped to get passed Moving forward to the issues of today and Aaron's run for mayor, he starts by praising the Board and the Mayor's Office for coming together to deal with COVID. Then he talks about ways that he and Mayor London Breed have worked together in their times in office. And then we get into Aaron's decision, which he announced this April, to run for mayor. It was a love for The City and the people who live here. It was a lack of what he deems "real choices" in the race. But it was also what Aaron and many others, including myself, see as a billionaire-funded, ultra-conservative attempt to take over politics in San Francisco. It all added up to something he felt he had to do. Aaron says that, unlike his first run for supervisor, when it comes to his candidacy for mayor, he's "in it to win it." Investigators for the Commissioner of Canadian Elections agreed that the Chinese government before and during the 2021 federal election was actively engaged in pushing Chinese Canadian voters to vote against British Columbia (Steveston-Richmond East) MP Kenny Chiu. These actions concluded the investigators .. "According to Chinse Canadian interview subjects, this invoked a widespread fear amongst electors, described as a fear of retributive measures from Chinese authorities should a CPC government be elected. This included the possibility that travel to and from China could be interfered with by Chinese authorities, as well as measures being taken against family members or business interests in Canada." Yet, concluded the Canadian Elections investigators, the actions by China did not break the (Canadian) law and urged the review of China's actions against CPC MP Kenny Chiu be halted. Chiu was elected in 2019 and defeated in 2021. Guest: Kenny Chiu. Former Conservative Party of Canada Member of Parliament. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the final episode of this season of the podcast, Alistair Chiu and an anonymous Christian leader give us an inside look at how faith and work movements are being developed in the places they live. When it comes to developing movements like the ones described in this podcast, we can be tempted to assume that a “one size fits all” model will work. However, we are reminded in this episode of the need for faithful contextualization to meet the needs and questions of the city we are seeking to reach. As workers across the city press into integrating faith and work, the light of Christ within us will begin shining in the darkest of places. But cultivating these kind of movements will take a high level of adaptability, working with people that are different from us, and a deep desire to have alignment with co-laborers not as a prerequisite to relationship but as a by-product. And through all of this effort and strategy, we entrust ourselves to the One who will one day reign as King in our cities as it is in heaven. This marks the end of our journey of hearing global expressions of faith in work and rest. If you haven't listened to all of the previous episodes and guests, please check them out. In this episode of The Metabolic Classroom, Professor Ben Bikman, an expert in metabolic research, discusses the debate surrounding saturated fat and its impact on insulin resistance.Dr. Bikman addresses misconceptions about saturated fat perpetuated by proponents of plant-based diets, who often blame meat-based saturated fats for insulin resistance. He refers to his own 2011 research, highlighting the role of toll-like receptor four (TLR4) activation in inducing inflammation and insulin resistance, particularly stimulated by saturated fats.Acknowledging limitations in his earlier work, Dr. Bikman transitions to discussing fat digestion and absorption, setting the stage for studies on the impact of dietary saturated fat on metabolic outcomes. He cites a study by Volk et al. (2014) contradicting the direct link between dietary saturated fat intake and plasma saturated fat levels. Further, he discusses research challenging the low-fat emphasis of diets like DASH, including a study by Chiu et al. (2016) showing comparable blood pressure reduction with a high-fat version. The lecture also covers a meta-analysis by Choi et al. (2020) supporting the benefits of ketogenic diets high in saturated fat for glycemic control and insulin resistance.Dr. Bikman emphasizes the importance of considering context, suggesting that saturated fat consumption without excessive carbohydrate intake may not necessarily lead to insulin resistance. However, he acknowledges studies indicating potential concerns with high saturated fat intake in hypercaloric, high-carb diets, advocating for balanced macronutrient consumption.00:01 - Introduction of the topic of saturated fat and insulin resistance, highlighting common misconceptions and his expertise in the field.02:33 - Role of TLR4: Research on toll-like receptor four (TLR4) activation and its connection to inflammation and ceramide synthesis, leading to insulin resistance.07:05 - Fat Digestion Primer: Explanation of fat digestion in the small intestine, emphasizing the formation of chylomicrons for fat transport into the bloodstream.11:55 - Study by Volk et al. (2014): Key study that challenges the idea of dietary saturated fat directly increasing plasma saturated fat levels, despite high consumption.16:41 - High-Fat DASH Diet Study: Research comparing a high-fat version of the DASH diet to the standard low-fat version, highlighting similar blood pressure reduction but improved lipid profiles with the high-fat diet.19:46 - Meta-analysis by Choi et al. (2020): Demonstrating the benefits of ketogenic diets, typically high in saturated fat, in improving glycemic control and insulin resistance.21:40 - Historical Trends: The paradox of decreasing saturated fat consumption over time while insulin resistance rates have increased, suggesting a more complex relationship.25:58 - Overfeeding Studies: Studies showing that overconsumption of carbohydrates, particularly refined sugars and starches, can increase liver fat and saturated fat production, contributing to insulin resistance.27:09 - Study by Luukkonen et al. (2018): Study indicating that in a hypercaloric, high-carb diet, high saturated fat intake may worsen insulin resistance compared to high unsaturated fat intake.28:06 - Conclusion: The need for nuanced understanding, context, and critical appraisal of research findings regarding the relationship between saturated fat, carbohydrate intake, and insulin resistance.https://www.insuliniq.com#InsulinResistance #SaturatedFat #MetabolicHealth #NutritionScience #HealthEducation #DietaryMyths #CellBiology #ResearchInsights #FatDigestion #KetogenicDiet #CardiometabolicHealth #DASHDiet #Inflammation #MedicalResearch #HealthDebunked Hosted on Acast. Join us as Dean's chat co-hosts Doctors Jeff Jensen and Johanna Richey interview Dr. Matthew Cobb and Dr. Haywan Chiu, founders of the Foot and Ankle Surgical Academy. Dr. Cobb received his doctorate of podiatric medicine from the California School of Podiatric Medicine with Samuel Merritt University in Oakland in 2005. He went on to complete his 3-year surgical residency training program with Kaiser Permanente's San Francisco, Bay Area Foot, and Ankle Residency program. Dr. Haywan Chiu received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and did his doctorate of Podiatric medicine at Temple University. He completed his 3-year surgical residency program with DVA Palo Alto Podiatry residency program and Stanford University. Dr. Matt Cobb and Dr. Haywan Chiu discuss their experiences in podiatry and the development of the academy, providing valuable resources for students, residents, and faculty. Dr. Cobb specializes in reconstructive surgery with a focus on pediatrics, bringing a unique perspective to the field. Tune in to learn more about their journey and the impact of the academy on the podiatric community. Dr. Cobb and Dr. Chiu (along with 2 of their colleagues) began recording their surgeries to share with their students and residents to facilitate distance learning. They hoped to keep their residents engaged in learning surgical procedures even if they were not able to be physically present in the operating room due to pandemic restrictions/limitations. Listen as they describe their experiences with adaptability, flexibility, and leaning into technology to help advance surgical education. We discuss how vulnerability can help broaden opportunities and break down barriers to quality education. The Foot and Ankle Surgery Academy, also known as FASA, was established during the COVID-19 pandemic in response to the challenges faced by students, residents, and faculty in podiatric medicine. Dr. Matt Cobb and Dr. Haywan Chiu, the founders, recognized the impact of the pandemic on surgical training, with elective surgeries being canceled and limited opportunities for residents to gain hands-on experience in the operating room. This led to the idea of creating a platform where surgical procedures could be filmed and shared with the podiatric community. The primary goal of FASA is to provide educational resources through video compilations of various surgeries, accompanied by voiceovers from the primary surgeons. The videos aim to offer a detailed insight into the decision-making process, techniques, and nuances of podiatric surgeries. The founders emphasize showcasing not only the technical aspects of surgery but also the thought process behind each step. The creation of FASA allowed for a unique learning experience for students, residents, and faculty. The videos provided a visual representation of surgeries, allowing viewers to observe the procedures in detail. The platform also offered a space for discussion and reflection on different approaches to surgery, highlighting the importance of decision-making and adaptability in the operating room. Dr. Cobb and Dr. Chiu also discuss how the ability to make sound decisions during surgery is crucial, as it can determine the overall success of the procedure. They shared examples of cases where high-risk decisions led to positive outcomes, showcasing the significance of thoughtful and strategic decision-making in surgical practice. Dr. Cobb shares a valuable insight from his mentor, Shannon Rush, who emphasized the importance of stepping in right before a mistake is made that cannot be fixed. This highlights the critical role of experienced surgeons in guiding residents and younger surgeons to make the right decisions during procedures. Dr. Cobb's experience with Dr. Rush exemplifies how mentorship and guidance from seasoned professionals can shape a surgeon's decision-making process and ultimately lead to better outcomes for patients. The discussion also touched on the challenge of maintaining focus and presence during surgeries, with Dr. Cobb and Dr. Chiu emphasizing the need for residents to stay engaged and attentive throughout the entire procedure. They highlighted the potential consequences of zoning out or losing focus, underscoring the importance of being mentally present and focused on the task at hand to ensure successful surgical outcomes. They also share a personal experience where he and his colleague would remind residents not to zone out during surgeries, especially during critical moments like organ closures. He stressed the impact of losing focus, mentioning the potential consequences such as infections and compromised outcomes due to laziness or distraction. Dr. Chiu mentioned the challenge of teaching this mental integration component, as it goes beyond technical skills and requires a deep level of concentration and mindfulness. The discussion touched on the concept of neuroplasticity and focus, highlighting the variability in individuals' abilities to maintain focus for extended periods. https://explorepodmed.org/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine? Contributor: Travis Barlock, MD Educational Pearls: Cancer-related emergencies can be sorted into a few buckets: Infection Cancer itself and the treatments (chemotherapy/radiation) can be immunosuppressive. Look out for conditions such as sepsis and neutropenic fever. Obstruction Cancer causes a hypercoagulable state. Look out for blood clots which can cause emergencies such as a pulmonary embolism, stroke, superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome, and cardiac tamponade. Metabolic Cancer can affect the metabolic system in a variety of ways. For example, certain cancers like bone cancers can stimulate the bones to release large amounts of calcium leading to hypercalcemia. Tumor lysis syndrome is another consideration in which either spontaneously or due to treatment, tumor cells will release large amounts of electrolytes into the bloodstream causing hyperuricemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, and hypocalcemia. Medication side effect Immunomodulators can have strange side effects. A common one to know is Keytruda (pembrolizumab), which can cause inflammation in any organ. So if you have a cancer patient on immunomodulators with any inflammatory changes (cystitis, colitis, pneumonitis, etc), talk to oncology about whether steroids are indicated. Chemotherapy can cause tumor lysis syndrome (see above), and multiple chemotherapeutics are known to cause heart failure (doxorubicin, trastuzumab), kidney failure (cisplatin), and pulmonary toxicity (bleomycin).
